I usually work until the late evening and on my way home, I pass by the large Jack Shadbolt painting (Hill Fire) in the 1st floor hallway. I am tired and often feel quite weary from all the new stories of suffering I have heard. On my way out of the hospital, I take a minute to sit on the bench facing the painting, just letting the colours wash over me. As I walk through these hallways going from ward to ward, I feel these works of art have become my companions, grounding me and reminding me of the sacredness of our work here, that what we are all doing is no less than caring for the life of the soul." Dr. Beverly Spring, Physician, Palliative Care Program, VGH I first noticed the paintings during a time when I was required to make frequent visits to the hospital. Taking the time to look at the art helped to keep my medical situation in perspective. Unlike the banal representation found on many institutional walls, the artworks at VGH are impressive. Most of the artists are established and, more important, each work is an exceptional example of the artists production. The impact on patients and those around them cannot be overstated. Our Hospitals
Together, VGH, UBC Hospital and GF Strong Rehab Centre deliver the most complex, specialized health care in all of B.C. and are the provincial centre for B.C.s most critically ill patients. Our hospitals are virtually unmatched in North America for the number and scope of areas of specialized health care they deliver. For patients and their families, that means being able to receive the latest life-saving treatment or innovative surgical procedure right here in our own province. Our hospitals also form B.C.s main academic teaching hospital and provide the ideal environment for groundbreaking research and medical education to learn and share leading-edge techniques and train the next generation of health care professionals.

Our hospitals are home to more than 500 vibrant works by renowned Canadian artists such as Jack Shadbolt, Martha Sturdy, Gordon Smith, Sylvia Tait and Jock Macdonald. This stunning collection is the work of the volunteer Art Committee at VGH and UBC Hospital, formed in 1999 to shatter the perception of hospitals as cold, frightening institutions and create an atmosphere of caring, warmth, healing and hope.

Patients exposed to art and images of beauty in hospitals recover more quickly from surgery, ask for less pain medication, have shorter hospital stays, and have less anxiety and depression. For doctors, nurses and other health professionals who provide patient care, exposure to art reduces stress and leads to overall satisfaction with their jobs and, in turn, improved care for patients.
The Art Committee hopes to place VGH, UBC Hospital and GF Strong Rehab Centre at the forefront of visual arts programming for health care in Canada. In recognition of VGHs national leadership in fostering a comprehensive art program, the Canada Councils Art Bank in 2007 provided more than 20 works of art by Canadian artists thereby enhancing the intersection of art and healing. Our hospitals are the first non-museum/gallery facility to receive works under the Art Banks loan program. However, the vast majority of the artwork comes from the generosity of artists or private donors, including the late Ian Davidson, a well known Vancouver collector. He strongly believed that art in a health care environment was good for the soul and would help the healing process. Before his death in 2007, Ian made provisions in his will to leave a portion of his sizeable art collection to benefit the art program. He liked the fact that his collection, which he cared for deeply, would be seen by hundreds of people daily and would provide comfort, distraction and beauty to those working in, admitted to, and visiting our hospitals.
