Breath of Life
Gifts come in many ways. Some come in spectacular ways, demanding our attention. Others are given more quietly and only gradually come to our notice. Pentecost is the celebration of the gift of the Holy Spirit. But what kind of giving do we celebrate? In the Book of Acts the Holy Spirit is given publicly with the sound of rushing wind, tongues of fire, and powerful speech. This was Joel's dream of the Day of the Lord come true. A day when God's power was poured out upon all flesh. A day that reversed the confused babble of many languages and promised a profound unity to the world. A day of signs and wonders, visions and portents. In John's Gospel the Spirit was given at night, in a locked room, to a fearful group of disciples. It was given quietly, in a breath. With it was given peace and a task and the power of forgiveness- seemingly ordinary things. God's Spirit can come in wind and fire and move people to repentance and conversion. But such miracles can have a limited effect. Breath must continue if there is to be life. It is not flash and dazzle that gave birth to God's people, but the Spirit- a gift from God as surely as life itself is God's gift. Jesus enters into our locked rooms. With His peace we are freed from whatever fear and silence immobilizes us. With Jesus' sending we are commissioned to continue to full life-giving ministry of Jesus. With Jesus' breath God's life enters into us. Receive the Holy Spirit.
