Course information 201011 04b Statistics 2 (half course)

This half course requires the student to develop the concepts introduced in 04a Statistics 1 of measurement and hypothesis testing.

Rule
04a Statistics 1 must be taken before or at the same time as 04b Statistics 2.

Learning outcomes
At the end of this half course and having completed the essential reading and activities students should: be competent users of standard statistical operators who are familiar with a variety of well-known distributions and their moments understand the fundamentals of statistical inference and be able to apply these principles to choose an appropriate model and test in a number of different settings recognise that statistical techniques are based on assumptions and in the analysis of real problems the plausibility of these assumptions must be thoroughly checked.

Aims and objectives

The aim of this half course is to develop the students knowledge of elementary statistical theory. The emphasis is on topics that are of importance in applications to econometrics, finance and the social sciences. Concepts and methods that provide the foundation for more specialised courses in statistics are introduced.

Essential reading
For full details please refer to the reading list. Lindley, D.V. and W.F. Scott. New Cambridge Statistical Tables. (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press) Newbold, P. Statistics for Business and Economics. (London: Prentice-Hall).

Assessment
This half course is assessed by a two hour unseen written examination.

Students should consult the Programme Regulations for degrees and diplomas in Economics, Management, Finance and the Social Sciences that are reviewed annually. The Prerequisites, Exclusions, and Syllabus are subject to confirmation in the Regulations. Notice is also given in the Regulations of any courses which are being phased out and students are advised to check course availability.

Syllabus
This is a description of the material to be examined, as published in the Regulations. On registration, students will receive a detailed subject guide which provides a framework for covering the topics in the syllabus and directions to the essential reading.

This half course takes the content of Statistics 1 as a prerequisite and requires the student to develop the ideas of measurement and hypothesis testing which have already been introduced. Some competence in Mathematics is assumed. Probability: Independence for several events, random variables, manipulation of E, V and Cov. Distribution Theory: Moments of distributions. Important distributions including binomial, uniform, exponential and Poisson, Students t, F. Joint probability distributions.

Inference: Bias, Mean square error. Efficiency. Hypothesis testing and confidence intervals for parameters such as mean, proportion, difference between means and proportions, a, b and r2. Goodness of fit tests: Chi-squared test of goodness-of-fit for simple contingency table models. Anova: One-way and two-way analysis of variance tables. The use of the F test. Regression: Least squares. Interval estimation. Diagnostics. Several explanatory variables.
