About Metroparks
Metroparks of the Toledo Area is a regional system of premier natural, historical and cultural parklands. A public agency serving Lucas County, Metroparks maintains parks and conservation areas totaling 11,000 acres. The park districts mission is to enhance our quality of life and inspire preservation efforts in this and future generations.

The Sand Duns (Red) Trail at Oak Openings Preserve, for example, leads to a spectacular view of the Girdham Road Sand Dunes. You may even see a red-headed woodpecker along the way as you pass through some of the best examples of restored oak savanna habitat in the preserve. On the Prairie (Orange) Trail at Secor you might see hawks searching for field mice in the tall grasses, or butterflies flitting between the colorful wildflowers. In late summer and early fall, Indian grass, blazing star, big bluestem and prairie dock color the horizon. Scenes like these are common throughout the Metroparks. The All Purpose (Brown) Trail at Swan Creek Preserve is a popular trail that has a scenic overlook, views of open meadows and a bridge over the creek. Bicycles are permitted on this newly-paved trail. Pearson has both a bicycle and an exercise trail. Oak Openings has the park systems only horse trail a popular 15-mile bridle path that leads riders through sand dunes, prairies, wet woods, pine forests and oak savannas. And the trails at Wildwood Preserve take in stunning views of the Ottawa River as well as the historical buildings of the former Stranahan estate. For a longer trail experience, theres the 8-mile Towpath along the Maumee River, connecting Farnsworth, Bend View and Providence Metroparks; the University/Parks Trail, which begins at the University of Toledo and continues to King Road in Sylvania, with a connector to Wildwood; and the Wabash Cannonball Trail, the regions longest, paved trail popular with bicyclists. Many of the programs in this catalog involve a walk on one of the Metroparks trails, but you dont have to wait for a special invitation to enjoy them. The trails are here, every day of the year, for you to explore. For a list of all trails, please visit MetroparksToledo.com. Have a great summer. Scott Carpenter Director of Public Relations

The Great Park Search Is On!
The Great Park Search, or GPS, is going on now in the Metroparks. The park system and its partners are sending you on a summer adventure to discover new parks, have fun and win prizes. The nine-week program started June 6, but there is still plenty of time left to participate. Heres how it works: Each week a new set of clues is posted on a website. Nine clues will lead you to secret locations in nine parks.
| 18 |

to the website where you got the clue and enter the codeword for that park. The next week, the contest starts over with new secret locations and another chance to win. Each time you enter a correct codeword, you will be entered in a drawing. One winner is being drawn each week. Thats nine chances to win each week for nine weeks. Plus, every entry will be automatically placed in a drawing for a grand prize at the end of the contest in August. Thats it! For a list of clues, prizes and all contest details, just go to MetroparksToledo.com. Good luck, and have fun discovering new Metroparks this summer.

Follow the clues (or use the GPS numbers provided if you prefer) to find as many secret locations as you can. When you reach each location, you will find a codeword. Look for the Great Park Search logo on a sign; the codeword will be displayed below. Then, simply go back

Maumee River at Bend View

Park Spotlight: A River Runs Through Them

It all started on the banks of the Maumee River when Side Cut became the first Metropark. Over 80 years later, the river remains an important part of the park system. Four Metroparks border the mighty Maumee, the largest river flowing into the Great Lakes. If youre looking for a scenic spot to enjoy a summer breeze, any one of them will do. Side Cut - The park is named for the former side cut extension of the Miami and Erie Canal that connected the main line of the canal with the city of Maumee. Three of the six original locks from the canal system are preserved. The picturesque flat rocks that extend into the river between Maumee and Waterville are known as the Maumee River Ledges, a rare form of a little-known habitat called an alvar, found in only a handful of places on the Great Lakes. Farnsworth - A narrow park along the Maumee River overlooking Missionary, Butler and Indian islands, which are owned by the Ohio Division of Wildlife. The park is at one end of the Towpath Trail and has a boat launch and fishing access. The trail connects this park with Bend View and Providence. The Interurban Bridge, which crosses the river at Farnsworth, is partially built atop Roche de Bout, a large, protruding rock in the river that served as an early landmark for native people, European explorers and armies. Bend View - The name describes this parks greatest attribute an unequaled view of a 90-degree bend in the Maumee River. The secluded park is 2.2 miles from Farnsworth or about six miles from Providence on the Towpath Trail. A new entrance on US 24 now allows easier access to Bend View, where a trail leads down to the Towpath and a stone shelter overlooking the State Scenic River. Providence - Canal boats once carried goods and people 249 miles between Toledo and Cincinnati, linking Lake Erie and the Ohio River. Visitors to Providence get a sense of what canal travel was like during a trip aboard an authentic, mule-drawn canal boat on an original section of the Miami and Erie Canal. The Providence Dam, just upriver from another attraction, the Isaac Ludwig Mill, was originally constructed to keep the canal filled with water. The canal boat and mill are open May through October.
