When Sharon High School opens its doors next August, the 200s hallway wont be the same. The Foreign Language Department is saying good-bye to two long time faculty members. Combined, they have over 60 years of classroom teaching experience and will be sorely missed by the SHS community.

A French Song
By : Jordan Greenberg, Tal Heller, Julie Fishman, Melissa Jay and Sruti Parvataneni
This is a song we came up with in French class using vocabulary from a Petit Nicolas story called King. Little Nicolas is around five years old and goes to the pond with his friends to catch tadpoles. Our song is based off the song Baby by Justin Bieber and can be sung to the same tune.
A Tadpole One day I went to the public garden There was a pond Where I saw a tadpole And I had never fished there before Chorus : And I thought my tadpole, oh My tadpole, tadpole, tadpole, My tadpole, tadpole, tadpole, You will always be mine, mine. I put you in a jar I kept you, I was proud You were my love, you were my heart And we will always, always, always be
Chorus Anyway, you grew up You became a frog I miss you, I have a lot of pain Now I have a jar and a heart that is not full.

Despite the fact that neither people who come from Rome nor world language students often speak Latin anymore, its spirit and influence still stays. Most words in the English dictionarysixty percent come from Latin. The word dictionary itself comes from the past participle dictus that means (note that the word dire in French (that means to say or to tell) and comes from the same root) to say or to tell. So, using minimal knowledge of Latin, you can determine the definition of English words. See some examples here: Find the English word that corresponds with a Latin word from which its root comes: A. Vestige: a trace 1. Nox, noctis : night B. Aquanaut: sailor 2. Iungo, iungere, iunxi, iunctus : to join C. Draco Malfoy: an evil Harry Potter character 3. Melior, melior, melius : better D. Nocturnal: something awake at night 4. Fugio, fugere, fugi, fugititurus : to flee E. Conjunction : a link to phrases and clauses 5. Aqua, aquae : water + nauta, nautae: sailor F. Ameliorate : to make better 6. Malus, mala, malum: bad G. Fugitive : a runaway 7. Vestigium, vestigii : footprint But there are also false friends, words that are similar, but have completely different meanings. The word puer in French is a verb that means to stink, but the same word in Latin is a noun meaning boy! If youre interested in science, all of the scientific names for plants and animals are Latin. For example, a canis familiaris literally means a dog of the family- a domesticated dog and an ursus maratimus is a bear that comes from the seashore- a polar bear. But the most important reason that Latin is pertinent is that its fun! It is a grammatical puzzle with rules more complicated than those of the French language because you need to determine the part of speech of each word and it can be placed in any order within a sentence. Languages like Spanish, Portuguese, and Romanian are the most like Latin (theyre romance languages, after all), but the grammar is completely universal. We use a grammar of thoughts regardless of whatever language we speak that always includes a subject and a verb. We eventually add complexities such as direct and indirect objects and form subordinate clauses. They take up different forms in any language and the usage is never exactly the same, but to understand Latin, you need to understand and be able to manipulate all types of words and parts of speech. In studying Latin, a new word of culture, history, and Roman literature reveals itself that lived in a society full of philosophy, technology, and bizarre traditions on which many aspects of our modern lives are based.
