Whipple City Parade

Youre invited to include a float or walking contingent in the Whipple City Festival Opening Parade Friday, June 17, 2011 This years parade will be a celebration of The Circus. Bands and colorful floats will highlight the parade. Local businesses, organizations, families, and individuals are invited to include a float with a Circus theme (or any creative enterprise) . Recognition will be given for the best float or group in three categories: The Greatest Float on Earth (the best circus theme), the Most Creative, and the Most Entertaining. The Parade will form in the K-Mart parking lot at 5:30 pm. It will step off at 6 pm, proceed along Main St. to the traffic light, where it will turn left onto Washington Square, and left again onto Church St. It will conclude upon reaching Main Street. Awards will be presented in the Mowry Park Gazebo during the opening ceremonies of the Festival on Friday evening. Remember to stay around after the parade for good food, a craft fair, carnival games, and great entertainment. SALES - SERVICE - PARTS Three active community members will judge the three best floats in this years Whipple City Festival Parade: Elaine Kelly, the Town Clerk, Tom Graves, the Postmaster, and Marilyn Rogers, the head of the local Food Pantry, will select the The Greatest Float on Earth (that is, the one with the best circus theme), the Most Creative, and the Most Entertaining. Town Clerk Kelly, a native of the area, said she enjoyed the jugglers at the circus when she took her kids to Barnum & Bailey. And for the past 19 years, shes been juggling the many hats of her job, including Registrar of Vital Statistics, Records Management Officer, and Notary, as well as being the issuer of licenses to dogs, hunters, and people who want to get married. Marilyn Rogers has spent her life in this area and when she thinks of the circus, the image that pops into her mind is the old Popcorn Wagon in Cambridge, always brimming with the delicious white popped kernals. In her 10 years with the Food Pantry, the shelves have also always been full, she said. Tom Graves has lived in town for 20 years and has been the Postmaster here for 3 years. Graves also serves as the Vice President of the Greenwich Board of Education. The great thing about the circus is that its basically the same since I was a kid, Graves said.
