Discuss the three styles of policing that this chapter describes? How do they di ffer?

Which one characterizes the community in which you live? The three styles of policing are: The Watchman style of policing. This style is not very popular, in fact, " some authors condemned this style of policing, suggesting it is unfairly found in low er-class or lower-middle-class communitied..." (Schmalleger, 2010 Pg. 127). This style of policing I interpret to be the bad cop in the typical 'good cop, bad c op' scenario. Bullyiing the bad guys, threatening them and pretty much just bein g the stereotypical big bad police officer. The Legalistic style of policing. This style to me seems to be the least effecti ve. Everyone hates those who follow every single rule and have no sort of bend o r play in their interpretation of them. The example the book gave was an officer issuing a ticket for 1 MPH over the limit. Officers follow every rule by the bo ok. The Service style of policing. This style seems to be the most popular and most effective solo style of policing. Of course there will always be those with blat ant disrespect and hatred towards any law enforcement and/or authority in genera l who will just take advantage of this system. Service style policing "strives t o meet the needs of a community and serve its members, the police see themselves more as helpers than as soldiers in a war on crime and they work with social se rvices and other agencies to provide counseling for minor offenders and to assis t community groups in preventing crimes and solving problems." (Schmalleger, 201 0 Pg. 127) The service style offers offenders a chance to join AA or drug rehab programs rather than sentence than to X amount of time where they will grow bitt er and not receive the type of help they need. I currently live on base at Hill Air Force Base in Utah so I feel I have a mix o f the Legalistic and Service style of policing. I say this because the Security Forces on base is exactly like the example given in the book where if you are sp eeding whether it be 3 or 15 MPH you will get a ticket. However the base itself offers many programs and no questions asked sort of help to assist those with al cohol and other problems. Lastly: Let's look at law enforcement officers and the ideologies/methodologies seen in law enforcement today. Compare and contrast the ideology and practice (s tyle) of community policing with the legalistic style of policing. In your compa rison argue which style policing and its ideology and/or methodology in your opi nion is more correct and why. Be prepared to defend your comments and opinions. Community style policing is all about involving the community and having the pol ice and the people work hand in hand in order to keep the streets safe. While Id ealistic policing is just the police enforcing every single rule/law and possibl y making people who would normally love law enforcement disgruntled and upset. " according to Skolnick, community policing involves one of four elements: (1) com munity-based crime prevention, (2) reorientation of patrol activities to emphasi ze the importance of nonemergency services, (3) increased police accountability to the public and (4) decentralization of command, including a greater use of ci vilians at all levels of police decision making." (Schmalleger, 2010 Pg. 130) I personally feel that community policing is the better choice between the two. As I have previously stated people get disgruntled towards the legalistic style of policing because they feel they are being picked on and that the officers are m icromanaging them. Community style involves the people and gives us more of a sa y on how things should be ran. And it also allows us to police ourselves and kee p the police officers out of a lot of situations where they are not really neede d.
