FOUR STROKE SINGLE CYLINDER VARIABLE COMPRESSION RATIO PETROL ENGINE TEST RIG COUPLED TO EDDY CURRENT DYNAMOMETER

ENGINE SPECIFICATION: Two stroke petrol engine ENGINE SPECIFICATION: Four stroke petrol engine BHP Speed No. of Cylinder Torque Compression Ratio Bore Stroke Displacement Orifice Diameter Type of Ignition Type of Cooling Type of Starting Fuel : 3.4 HP(2.5kw) : 3000 RPM : One : 14 newton at 1700 RPM : 2 to 10 : 70 mm : 66.7 mm : 256cc : 20 mm : Spark Ignition : Air Cooled : Rope Start : Petrol

AIR FLOW MEASUREMENT:

An air drum fitted on the panel frame connected with an air hose to the engine; facilitate an orifice manifold with orifice and pressure pick up point at the up and downstream of the orifice. The pressure pick up points are connected to a U tube manometer limbs. The difference in manometer reading is taken at different loads. Where Cd of orifice = 0.62 Dia of orifice = 20 mm COOLING SYSTEM

The engine cylinder jacket is air cooled and the auxiliary cylinder is cooled by water. EXHAUST SYSTEM The exhaust gas is passed through a calorimeter. The exhaust gas temperature at the inlet and outlet of calorimeter and cooling water temperature at the inlet and outlet of calorimeter are indicated by respective thermocouples and indicated in the digital temperature indicators. (The exhaust gas inlet temp. is displayed in a separate indicator). FUEL MEASUREMENT: The fuel supplied from the main fuel tank through a measuring burette with 3 way manifold system. To measure the fuel consumption of the engine fill the burette by opening the cock marked tank in the manifold block by starting a stop clock / stop clock measure the time taken to consume 25 cc of fuel. Then the weight of the fuel is calculated using the formula.

LOADING OF THE ENGINE AND MEASUREMENT OF BRAKE POWER The engine is loaded by an eddy current dynamometer at a rated speed of 2800 rpm. The eddy current dynamometer is coupled to the main crank shaft of the engine. The load to the engine can be varied manually by operating the set torque knob provided on the control panel. a) Compression ratio can be varied by moving the hand wheel above the auxiliary cylinder head from 10:1 to 2:1. b) The speed of the engine can be varied by operating accelerator knob provided on the panel frame. c) For each compression ratio the following can be calculated.

CONTROL PANEL The measurement of the control panel 700mm x 900mm mounted on the MS frame and it consists of Digital Temperature Indicator K type of range 1200 degree capacity , Channel Selector to displace the temperature of different points, Digital RPM Indicator to displace speed of the engine, Fuel Burette, Manometer Console Switch and the power indicator with MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker) for the safety purpose
