Background
The 1st Mekong Sub-Regional countries Public Health Conference on Primary Health Care in Globalization was held in Khon Kaen University, Thailand on 20-21 August2009. After this conference, the leaders from Faculties of Public Health in the MekongSub-Regional countries including Khon Kaen University of Thailand, University of Health Sciences of Laos, and Hue College of Medicine and Pharmacy of Vietnam agreed to organize the conference yearly and each University should take turn in holding the periodic conference. The 2nd international conference on Public Health among Greater Mekong SubRegional countries on Challenges and Opportunities for Collaboration of Public HealthTraining and Research in Globalization was hosted by Faculty of Public Health, University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Hue, Vietnam and on August 30-31, 2010. The 3rd international conference on Public Health among Greater Mekong SubRegional countries entitled Global Preventive Public Health Challenges among Greater Mekong-Sub Region will be hosted by the Faculty of Postgraduate Studies, University of Health Sciences, the Ministry of Health in Vientiane, Lao PDR which has planned to be held on 9-10th August, 2011. Approximately 300 participants from Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Yunnan and Lao PDR will attend this conference. The third conference will cover broad public health aspects of preventive and curative health issues in the Greater Mekong Sub-Regional countries. Original researches and reviewed articles as well as health policy guidelines /plans that have or will have public health implications within the region will be considered and accepted for oral and poster presentation. The conference will also invite research groups which are currently working in Lao PDR as well as the international organizations such as WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA, UNDP, FAO, JICA, FSP, University of Tokyo, IFMT, CARE International, Health Frontiers, Merieux Foundation, Pasteur Institute, IRD, US CDC, NAMRU, Wellcome Trust-Mahosot Hospital-Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Collaboration, NCA, LYAP etc. Some special symposiums on specific themes will also be arranged simultaneously upon the request of those who have intention to do so. Moreover, a special session on Join Hands to Collaborate on Public Health Research for Preventive and Curative Issues will be organized in order to provide all participants and research partners with opportunities to discuss and link their research works together. It is hoped that this conference will provide a significant opportunity for all partners who work on the health related fields to share and discuss on their ideas, experience, and lessons on health improvement and development within the region as well as in the Lao PDR.

This two-day event will incorporate a unique scientific program, focusing on a broad range of public health topics. The main theme of the Conference is Global Preventive Public Health Challenges among Greater Mekong Sub-Regional Countries. It is expected that the Conference will be a venue for exchanging ideas, which will lead to collaborative research and joint efforts to increase public awareness of health problems in the Greater Mekong Sub-Regional and Asia Pacific countries. Objectives To enhance the quality and relevance of educational and training programs as well as research in public health among Greater Mekong Sub-Regional countries. To raise awareness, of current, emerging, and re-emerging Preventive public health issues and develop programs of action for their resolution. To share knowledge and experience in Preventive Public Health among the diverse societies of the Greater Mekong Sub-Regional countries. To enhance the capacity and sustainability of public health collaboration among greater Mekong Sub-Regional countries.

Scientific Programs The principal theme of this Meeting is Global Challenges of Preventive Public Health Issues among Greater Mekong Sub-Regional Countries and a variety of other sessions will be presented, as follows: 1. Health systems strengthening which consisted of 6 'building blocks': leadership and governance (includes primary health care); human resources for health; health financing; health information systems; medical products and technology; service delivery 4

2. Adolescent Sexual and reproductive health 3. Maternal and child health (MDG 4 & 5) 4. HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria (MDG 6) 5. Nutrition and food safety 6. Global warming: environmental and health impact and (MDG 7) 7. Infectious and tropical diseases 8. Surveillance and control of communicable diseases (including emerging public health threats) 9. Non-communicable diseases and risk factors (tobacco, alcohol)

Correspondence: Presenting authors e-mail address Please begin your paper here by copying and pasting your text into this document or by typing it here directly. Do not change the font sizes or types! The title of the abstract should be written in Times New Roman, bold, 14pt, centered. Initial letter of each word should be capitalized. Authors name and affiliation should be written in Times New Roman, 11pt, centered. If there are several authors or affiliations, related numbers should be given using superscripts. Ensure that the entire abstract, including title and authors, is written within a space measuring 17.5 cm wide and 12.0 cm high. (abstract within approx. 250 words) The font size should be 10pt. No pictures, graphs, or tables are permitted in the abstract. Save your abstract in Microsoft Word format. After the abstract text, please list keywords (up to 3 words) that briefly describe the content of your abstract. Please use the same 6

The rectangular poster-board surface area for each presenter is 90 cm wide x 180 cm high. An appropriate poster size, therefore, is 85 cm wide x 150 cm high. The Poster should be prepared based on the following format: Introduction, Methodology, Results, Discussion and Conclusion. Most nationalities holding valid passports may spend up to 30 days in Laos on a tourist visa if they have a valid onward air ticket. Visitors from ASEAN countries do not need a visa to enter Laos. For more information about visas, please contact the Lao Embassy or Consulate in your country. Letters of invitation On request, the Secretariat will be pleased to issue an official invitation to attend the Meeting. This may be of assistance in getting the appropriate visa or leave to attend the Meeting. However, such invitation will not oblige the Secretariat to be responsible for travel or other expenses.

Currency Lao currency uses denominations of Lao Kip. Approximate exchange rates (as of 21st Jan 2011) 1 US$ = 8,084 LAK 1 = 12,494 LAK 1 Euro = 10,746 LAK 100 = 94.51 LAK Banks are open 08:30-15:30 hr Monday to Friday. Currency exchange is also available at the hotel. Electricity Electrical voltage/frequency in Laos is 220 volts/50 cycles AC. Most electrical outlets are two-pronged, with small prongs and no earth.

Liability and insurance The Organizing Committee cannot accept liability for any loss, damage or injury arising from accident or illness, whatever the cause, that may occur during the Meeting. The liability of persons and enterprises providing means of transportation or other services, however, remains unaffected. Appropriate travel, accident and health insurances are strongly recommended. Credit cards Internationally recognized travelers checks and all major credit cards, including American Express, Diners Club, Visa, and Master Card are accepted by hotels, some department stores, and some restaurants.
