Captain Kevin Roberson of the 35th Battalion Virginia Cavalry had two great- grandfathers who fought in the Civil War. So he honors them by reliving history of their time. Its a great way to teach younger generations what happened 150 years ago, he said. The Corbits Charge Commemorative Weekend began Saturday off Center Street in Westminster for the 148th anniversary of the event. More than 130 participants of all ages came out to the Civil War Living History Encampment. The event also featured more than 20 units and 13 sutlers, who offer merchandise, and displayers. Corbits Charge is named after Captain Charles Corbit of the Company C, 1st Delaware Cavalry, who led a charge to overcome what he believed to be a small unit of Confederates. His small group of Union soldiers instead met a large body of Confederate veteran cavalry under General J.E.B. Stuart at the junction of Main Street and Washington Road in Westminster June 29, 1863.

After a fierce skirmish, the Union troops were overpowered. Saturdays mild summer day brought out crowds to enjoy the encampment. Confederate soldiers started off the days events with a 1st Maryland artillery demonstration. Ned Landis, who served as commander, explained the duties of the five men charged with preparing a cannon to fire before visitors saw the team in action. Its very different from todays artillery, he said, of Civil War artillery. This was a lot more guesswork. Friendly fire was a bigger problem than it is today and aiming at the enemy was trickier without using computers to map out exact coordinates. But some Civil War soldiers had the know- how to aim properly and hit a number of their enemies by using their instincts and experience, said Landis, a member of the Pipe Creek Civil War Round Table. Many children watched the fake demo unfold, but covered their ears as the cannon fired. Many other activities were at Please see Charge, A7

Carroll schools are hoping a change in the dress code will help with enforcement when it comes to evaluating excessively short clothing and wearing pajamas to school. The definition of excessively short now says that clothing must reach the end of the students fingertips, with a students hands down to his or her side, said Steven Johnson, assistant superinten- INSIDE dent of instruction. Schools Previously the definition just stated that adjust clothing must reach grading system /A3 mid thigh. He said a rule has also been made prohibiting pajamas from being worn to school, barring permission for a spirit day or other schoolwide function. These changes are intended to help provide uniform enforcement of the dress code, especially concerning the definition of excessively short clothing, Johnson said. The definition was previously more subjective before being revised. Teachers found it was sometimes difficult to judge when clothing reached mid thigh. When updating the standard, school officials looked at policies around the state, talking with students and administrators, he said. Mount Airy Middle Principal Karl Streaker said the current definition would sometimes cause an argument Please see Code, A8
