10th Annual Kids Come First! Diamond Gala!

On June 4, Communities In Schools Dallas Region (CISDR)s 25th birthday year culminated at the Omni Mandalay Hotel at Las Colinas with the 10th Annual Kids Come First! Diamond Gala. Amy Turner served as Diamond Gala Chair along with Honorary Chair, Kathy Klingaman, and Honorary 25th Birthday Chair, Barbara Hunt Crow. Positioned as the year-end showcase, Turner, Klingaman and Hunt Crow were likeminded in their efforts to accomplish one primary goal with this gala raise funds for CISDRs one-on-one daily on-campus academic and social support services for at-risk students throughout the Dallas region. In honor of competent, yet underachieving students tirelessly served by professional CISDR staff and volunteers, more than 200 guests gathered for the black-tie event, which consisted of live and silent auctions, fine dining, dancing, and a special performance by students of Williams Preparatory School. For the Diamond Gala, we wanted to pull out all the stops on behalf of this fabulous organization, Turner said. It [was] time for some bling!

2011 CISDR Angel Tree Program Selected as Junior League of Dallas (JLD) Provisional Project
Each year, the Junior League of Dallas (JLD) guides first-year members, "Provisionals," on how to be effective volunteers and leaders in the community. Provisional members complete a comprehensive training course allowing them to receive a first-hand account at the needs within the Dallas community and how they can make a difference. During the course, each Provisional participates in one of 11, 20-hour community service projects, which they design, implement and fulfill. In order to ensure more than 1,500 of the Dallas regions neediest children are not left without basics such as food, warm clothing and presents during the holidays, this years JLD Provisional class will work with CISDR to organize, wrap and personalize gifts and essentials to be distributed to the students prior to 2011 winter break.

CISDR Student Profile

PAGE 4

James, a senior, was living in a bad situation without any parental support or positive influence before CIS began working with him. I began going to CIS when I was in high school, says James. CIS has helped me 100%, meeting with me in classrooms and during lunch. They even brought people in to talk to me. With help from CIS James began to improve his attitude, self-esteem and outlook. As he puts it, I've learned to stay on track more. I wasn't the best student and without CIS it wouldn't be good for me right now. According to James, CIS will get you on track. If they can provide it then they will. They help those who help themselves. What James especially appreciated about the help he received from CIS was talking to them about my problems and hearing the advice they gave me. The outlook for James appears bright. He says his education is the most important thing to him now. He says, if you don't have that then you dont anything. If he doesnt make it in the NBA then hes considering two other options. I want to be a biochemist because chemistry comes easy to me or maybe become a special education teacher. When I was teaching basketball for Special Olympics I found I liked working with the kids.
