1. Hukka (Tobacco)
In Gurmat, the use of tobacco is strictly forbidden and it should not be touched/used even by mistake.
Listen to the discipline of the Gursikh: he relinquishes the accompaniment of tobacco. He avoids bodily contact with it as he knows that he is better off dead than having to touch tobacco.
(Rehat Maryada)
Our Gurus knew about the ill-effects of tobacco centuries before the medical community did. See some of the things that smoking does to your body: diminished sense of smell and taste frequents colds Smokers cough gastric ulcers chronic bronchitis increase in heart rate and blood pressure premature and more abundant face wrinkles emphysema heart disease stroke cancer of the mouth, larynx, pharynx, esophagus, lungs, pancreas, cervix uterus and bladder Psycological symptoms, eg: irritability, anxiety, sleep disturbances, nervousness, headaches, fatigue, nausea, and lifelong cravings
Throughout the Sri Guru Granth Sahib there are verses that show that our Gurus did not want us to eat meat. Here are a few more: Do not call various religious texts false. False is one who gives no thought to their contents. If you consider God is in all, then why then do you slaughter the chicken (i.e., life?)
(Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, 1350)
He recites the scriptures very sweetly, but he does not hesitate to kill life.
(Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, 201)
You kill animals and call it religion (Rahit); then what indeed is irreligion (Kurahit)? Even then you consider yourself as a sage of sages; then whom to call a butcher?
(Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, 1103)
Men should look at the opposite sex as mothers, sisters and daughters, (women should look at the opposite sex as fathers, brothers and sons).
5. Alcohol / Intoxicants
All forms of intoxicants are forbidden, eg. alcohol, drugs, etc.
Drinking the wine (alcohol), his intelligence departs, and madness enters his mind; he cannot distinguish between his own and others, and he is struck down by his Lord and Master. Drinking it, he forgets his Lord and Master, and he is punished in the Court of the Lord.
(Sri Guru Grath Sahib, 544)
Kabir: those mortals who consume marijuana, meat, tobacco, fish and wine all pilgrimages, fasts and rituals they follow are of no use.
(Sri Guru Granth Sahib, 1377)
