THE DECADE IN PHOTOS PAGE 2
There wouldnt be a decade in photos
without all of the talented
photographers who contributed to
the Clipper, including our readers.
It's impossible to thank everyone, but
here's a shout out to our dedicated
staff and contributors:

W
e decided to do something a little dif-
ferent for this year's photo supplement.
Rather than look back on just one year,
this issue examines a decade in Duxbury's photo-
graphic history. From things that have changed, like
where we hold Town Meeting and who leads town
government and the school department, to things
that never change, like kids sledding at North Hill
on a snow day, it's all been captured on camera by
Clipper staff and our dedicated readers. We hope
you enjoy this visual tour of the last 10 years.
SPECIAL THANKS

T
he Fourth of July parade in Duxbury
is the highlight of
the summer, and
goes back over 100 years.
Here are some of our favor-
ite photos from the Fourth
of July weekend over the
past decade.
2010: Stu Ruggles, Rich Potash and Don Reed of the Fourth of July
Committee share a light moment on the bonfire they helped erect.
Putting an old wooden boat on top has been a tradition for 15 years.

countrys literary heritage. The side of the float reads: Todays banned book is tomorrows classic!
2008: Duxbury Idol finalist Rita Thompson and 2008 Duxbury Idol
winner Mariah MacFarlane sing The Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy on
the DHS Drama Clubs USO-themed float.

judges, taking top honors in the mini-float division.
2004: Supporters of the O'Neil Farm purchase march in the parade.
2008: The Duxbury-based band Son of Blues rocks the crowd at the beach and bonfire party.
2003: Members of the Auer fam-
ily of Duxbury were the first stilt-

We couldnt be more satisfied
with Renees professionalism and
efficency. She sold our house in

herself available to us. Her
expertise in negotiating allowed
us to sell our house for nearly
asking price as well as getting us
a significant reduction in the
purchase price of our new home.
We now consider Renee to be

Getting there is half the fun
A
unique tradition
for the Duxbury
prom is to come in
anything but a limo. Over the
years, DHS students have con-
tinually outdone themselves in
coming up with creative ways
to get to the dance.
These students hitched a ride
on a horse-drawn wagon.
In 2003, these students went the low-impact route and rode decorated shopping carts to prom.
Stephanie Gilbody and Matt Donahue arrive in an ATV.
Jon McKenzie and Julianna Hopkins came in a vintage MG.
Perhaps the most unusual arrival at the 2005 prom was by junior
Kristyn Lynch, who loaded up her date and some friends into Mass
Destruction, a monster truck.
Students emerge from a box truck after getting a lift to the prom.
Going with a nautical theme, these students rode a boat down St. George Street.

tizer? Certainly
not Emily Merlin!

Senior Prom as School Resource Officer Friend Weiler directs traffic during the

put our best color shot each week. The
photo can be something of importance
to a news story, it could mark an important event
like Town Meeting or it could be just a great photo.
Here are some of the best color photos to grace the
front page of the Clipper over the decade.

Wild & wacky weather
A Jeep slogs through a flooded street during a weekend in January
of 2010. The seemingly endless snowfall, mixed with a high tide,
created flooding problems and had DPW crews out on the roads from
Friday to Sunday.
In February 2006 the harbormasters
office said a 12-foot tide brought sea
waters rushing to shore, flooding
Washington Street, King Caesar Road
and Powder Point Avenue.
Seawater surges up the boat ramp near the Duxbury
Yacht Club during a NorEaster in April of 2007. The
flooding was so bad it closed roads and town officials
opened an emergency shelter in the Senior Center.
A sign warned boaters in Duxbury
Harbor of the impending Hurricane
Isabel in September of 2003.

It's Town Meeting time!
T
own Meeting is the
central government
institution in Dux-
bury, where the town's busi-
ness is done. Over the years,
the meeting has moved from
Duxbury Middle School to the
Performing Arts Center, and
many of the faces on the stage
have changed. One thing never
changes, however, and that is
the passion Duxbury residents
have for Town Meeting.
Town Moderator Allen Bornheimer (back row, fifth from left) is surrounded by
town officials sporting Bornheimers trademark bow-tie in tribute. Bornheimer

Meeting in
2001.
Finance Committee Chairman Kenneth McCarthy and Finance Director John Madden review
reports during Town Meeting in 2008. Voters were in a spending mood that year, as they
approved the operating and capital budgets and funds to design new public safety buildings
and buy open space.
Town Moderator Allen Bornheimer and Town Clerk Nancy Oates called Town
Meeting to order in 2004 to a small crowd in the PAC, just Mickey McGonagle
and Paul Arsenian. Because then Building Inspector Richard MacDonald did not
issue an occupancy permit for the PAC, Town Meeting was moved to the middle
school.
Town Manager Richard MacDonald presented a gloomy outlook at
the 2009 Town Meeting for the next fiscal year in his budget pre-
sentation.
Police Chief Mark DeLuca addresses annual Town Meeting in 2005. A citizens' petition to create an police
department oversight committee was overwhelmingly defeated.

Not always good news
P
art of the job that is reporting community news is cov-
ering the news that's not so good, like accidents, fres,
and crime. These photos should serve as a reminder
that living in Duxbury isn't without risks, and should also high-
light the stellar job the town's police and fre departments do
keeping us all safe and sound.
Duxbury firefighters look on as
an SUV is towed from the water
off Bay Road in 2009. Police say
the driver was sending a text
message when he ran off the
road and got his car stuck in an
inlet. The driver was charged
with negligent operation of a
motor vehicle.
Duxbury Police
Officer Mel Dyer,
who died as a
result of injuries
sustained when
he was struck
by a car while
working at the
Marshfield Fair
in 2008, was
laid to rest at St.
Christines Church
in Marshfield.
Hundreds of
police officers
from around the
state attended.
A grey Mitsubishi Gallant went through the front plate glass window
at the Rite Aid pharmacy in Halls Corner around noon in April of
2008. The elderly female driver of the car was shaken up but unin-
jured, according to Deputy Fire Chief Christopher West. No one inside
Rite Aid was injured in the crash, either, West said.
Flames shoot out of the ground on Cedar Street after a downed power
line caused a gas main to catch fire in June of 2004.
Duxbury Fire and Boston MedFlight personnel place a Franklin
Street man into the helicopter following a single-car accident in
March of 2004.
This unfortunate soul apparently
misjudged where the high water
mark is on the west end of the
Powder Point Bridge. It was a high
tide of 11.4 feet that day.
A driver from a Kingston company was killed in March of 2006 when
his truck struck an overpass on Route 3 South between exits 12 and
11 in Duxbury. In a further tragic twist, Duxbury Police Chief Mark
DeLuca said the co-owner of the company suffered a fatal heart
attack after learning about the death of one of his employees.
A terrible crash in September of 2007 took the life of DHS senior
Steven Laramee, and severely injured his brother and friend, when
his car went off the road and hit a tree on Union Bridge Road.
Duxbury firefighters responded to a fire at
the Bay Farm Montessori School on Loring
Street in November of 2007.

A lively election season
Duxbury residents supported President Obama in the 2008 Presidential Election. It was the first time
since 1964 that the town had voted for a Democratic president.
Erin Tonkon and Anita Vukovic hold a sign for Duxbury resident and
businessman Jack E. Robinson, a Republican candidate for U.S.
Senate, at the Duxbury Middle School during the special election
primary to fill Ted Kennedys vacant U.S. Senate Seat. Robinson lost
the primary to Scott Brown.
Town Clerk Nancy Oates chats with candidates in the middle school
gym after the polls closed in 2007.
Elane Siddall Mutkoskis husband and children hold up signs congrat-
ulating her on her win of the second seat as library trustee. Mutkoski
beat Rosamond Thompson by three votes for the position.
Glenn Listernicks daughter Caroline poses
with a Zac Efron poster and Flat Stanley, vis-
iting from Texas, outside the polls in 2009.
Unfortunately, the celebrity endorsement
didnt help Listernick, who lost the seat to
incumbent John Heinstadt.
Selectman Andre Martecchini, Moderator Allen Bornheimer, Assessor Linda
Collari, Library Trustee Elane Siddall Mutkoski, Housing Authority member
John Griffin and Planning Board member Brendan Halligan are sworn into
their newly elected positions by Town Clerk Nancy Oates during a selectmens
meeting after the 2006 election.
Steve Fitzgibbons and his son
Colin, 2, vote on Election Day
2010 at Duxbury Middle School.
Fifth graders at Duxbury Middle School did their own exit polls in 2004s national election, asking vot-
ers and campaign volunteers about their choices at the ballot. The mock elections held at the schools
perfectly mirrored the country-wide results.
Voters line up
at the Duxbury
Middle School to
cast their votes.
E
lections in Dux-
bury are often
hotly-contested
and produce some great de-
bate and of course, some
memorable photos of town
and national contests over
the years.

a proud tradition
D
uxbury is town with a strong mili-
tary tradition. The annual Memo-
rial Day parade is always a well-
attended and sincere tribute to those who
gave their lives for their country. The Ameri-
can Legion's Veterans' Day service is also an
annual remembrance of the men and women
who proudly serve in America's armed forc-
es. Here are a few of our favorite photos from
the military-themed events around Duxbury
over the years.
Members of Duxburys Legion Post 223 point out items at an empty table setting that represent soldiers
who are missing in action or prisoners of war. The ceremony is always a keystone of the posts Veterans
Day activities.
