T
he 2011 Nike US Open of Surfing has a
soundtrack and it will play live on the beach
before tens of thousands of fans. The event,
owned and produced by IMG, the global leader in
sports and entertainment, is taking a cue from its
action sports roots, and set to deliver the largest free
concert series of the summer.
It doesn't get much better than hearing your
favorite band perform live on the beach.
"It's fun bringing some of the best musicians in the
world to the US Open of Surfing," says Hurley's
Director of Music and Entertainment Marketing Greg
Teal. "It doesn't get much better than hearing your
favorite band perform live on the beach."
This years musical line-up is a representation of
todays youth culture featuring headlining sets by
pysch-pop rockers MGMT, platinum-selling rockers
Jimmy Eat World and Swedish electro/rock
sensations The Sounds. The series will also include
sets by the most buzzed about names emerging on the
music scene this year: Surfer Blood and Dead
Country. "We're pretty excited to come to Huntington
Beach for the US Open of Surfing. Our advice to
everyone: Drop out with MGMT, drop by for MGMT,
but just don't drop in on MGMT, said MGMT's
Andrew VanWyngarden.
Known as the worlds largest youth culture and action
sports festival, the Nike US Open of Surfing will
feature daily concerts Thursday through Saturday,
August 4-6, at the conclusion of the surfing competi-
tion. All concerts are free and open to the public.

US Open of Surfing Background
The 2011 Nike US Open of Surfing will run from
July 30 to August 7. With more than 500,000 people
in attendance along a 14-acre stretch of sand on the
south side of Huntington Beach Pier, the Nike US
Open of Surfing showcases the best in surf, skate,
BMX, music, fashion and art. All events at the
US Open of Surfing are FREE and OPEN TO
THE PUBLIC.
The action doesnt stop at the shoreline. On the
beach, Converse Coastal Carnage will once again
host the most talented and diverse crew of riders from
across the globe as they skate in a state-of-the-art
skate bowl. And, a stellar crew of BMX riders
will push the realm of possibility at the Nike 6.0 HB
BMX Pro. The runway will be busy on Thursday,
August 4 as five of the nations top high schools
will compete for $25,000 in the Hurley Walk the
Walk National Championship the ultimate youth
fashion competition.
Combined with one-of-a-kind retail and brand
experiences, more than 100 interactive exhibits,
autograph signings, DJs and giveaways, and you
have another summer to remember at the Nike US
Open of Surfing.

The woman who lead the successful
team effort to bring the migrating
Monarch Butterflies back to HB's Gibbs
Butterfly Park is asking for donations
for an educational tile project that
shows the process they go through from
caterpillars to winging it.
Leslie Gilson, Volunteer Restoration
Coordinator at the park, 16641 GrahamSt.
is spearheading the $17,000 project,
called,'Bucks for Butterflies.' We've
already had commitments for $11,000, so
all we need is $6,000 more to make the
exciting tile project a reality this Summer."
She said the renown Lubica Selecka
will be doing the artwork, which
includes eight, 3-foot-by-3-foot
sections that show all the stages for easy
understanding.

individuals and groups on tours at the
park, where she'll further explain the
tile project and the amazing story of
how the team of volunteers, the city and

She's also inviting everyone to the
park, named after former HB Mayor
Norma Brandel Gibbs, for Monarch
Magic, from 2-4pm, Aug. 7. There will
be a Parade, Puppet Show, Facepainting,
Popcorn, a Bugman, Snake Lady and
other fun stuff for the whole family.
At the park, you also can see an
incredible Butterfly Sculpture made of
photographs and images of HB by local
artist Robin Repp.
Repp's silk-screen process brought
out only the darkest and lightest
elements of each photo, creating a
variety of black images over a blanket
of golden paint on the 5-foot across
sculpture. The artist wanted it to appear
as an abstraction of a Monarch, then
when you get closer you realize its
images of HB.
The original creation was for a Public
TV Station butterfly initiative to raise
money and cover the county with
butterflies. The City of HB supported
the initiative.

Programs' Huntington
Beach Youth Shelter in
Central Park recently
where they saw a large
mound of coins that had
been collected by
businesses, schools, community groups and
families to assist the shelter that helps runaway
children and the homeless.
Organizers hoped more than $10,000 was
raised with the coinage, placed in shelter
containers the past two months. The welcome
coins will be counted by the Orange County
Credit Union. "The widespread coin contribu-
tioneffort allowedpeoplethroughout theareato
be part of our support activities," said Elsa
Greenfield, Shelter ProgramDirector.
She said over 24 groups helped this year
with the "Change for Change Drive." The
Shelter has aided more than 500 boys and
girls (11-17), reuniting 88% of them with
their families, since it opened.
Huntington Beach Mayor Joe Carchio
honored the following people for their good
work : HB Police Chief Ken Small (The
DistinguishedPartnerAward); Cheryl L. Phelps,
General Manager of The Hyatt Regency

I
ve been told that
honey is the only
food on the planet that will not spoil or rot.
It will do what some call turning to sugar. In
reality honey is always honey. However, when
left in a cool dark place for a long time (just like
us) it will do what I rather call "crystallizing"
When this happens loosen the lid, boil some
water, and sit the honey container in the hot
water, turn off the heat and let it liquefy. It is then
as good as it ever was. Never boil honey or put it
in a microwave. To do so will kill the enzymes
in the honey.
Cinnamon and Honey: Bet the drug companies
won't like this one getting around. Facts on
Honey and Cinnamon: It is found that a mixture
of honey and Cinnamon cures most diseases.
Honey is produced in most of the countries of the
world. Scientists of today also accept honey as a
'Ram Ban' (very effective) medicine for all kinds
of diseases.. Honey can be used without any side
effects for any kind of diseases.
Today's science says that even though honey
is sweet, if taken in the right dosage
as a medicine, it does
not harm
diabetic patients. Weekly World News, a
magazine in Canada , in its issue dated 17
January,1995 has given the following list of
diseases that can be cured by honey and
cinnamon as researched by western scientists:
HEART DISEASES: Make a paste of honey
and cinnamon powder, apply on bread, instead of
jelly and jam, and eat it regularly for breakfast.
It reduces the cholesterol in the arteries and saves
the patient from heart attack. Also, those who
have already had an attack, if they do this process
daily, they are kept miles away from the next
attack.. Regular use of the above process relieves
loss of breath and strengthens the heart beat. In
America and Canada , various nursing homes
have treated patients successfully and have found
that as you age, the arteries and veins lose their
flexibility and get clogged; honey and cinnamon
revitalize the arteries and veins..
ARTHRITIS: Arthritis patients may take
daily, morning and night, one cup of hot water
with two spoons of honey and one small teaspoon
of cinnamon powder. If taken regularly even
chronic arthritis can be cured. In a recent
research conducted at the Copenhagen
University, it was found that when the doctors
treated their patients with a mixture of one
tablespoon Honey and half teaspoon Cinna-
mon powder before breakfast, they found that
within a week, out of the 200 people so treated,
practically 73 patients were totally relieved of
pain, and within a month, mostly all the
patients who could not walk or
move around because of arthritis
started walking without pain.

powder, and three cups of water and boil to make like
tea. Drink 1/4 cup, three to four times a day. It keeps
the skin fresh and soft and arrests old age. Life spans
also increase and even a 100 year old, starts performing
the chores of a 20-year-old..

teaspoon of cinnamon powder paste. Apply this paste
on the pimples before sleeping and wash it next
morning with warm water.. If done daily for two weeks,
it removes pimples from the root.

mon powder in equal parts on the affected parts cures
eczema, ringworm and all types of skin infections.
Weight LOss: Daily in the morning one half hour
before breakfast on an empty stomach, and at night
before sleeping, drink honey and cinnamon powder
boiled in one cup of water. If taken regularly, it reduces
the weight of even the most obese person. Also,
drinking this mixture regularly does not allow the fat
to accumulate in the body even though the person may
eat a high calorie diet.

ake This Job and Shove It. Many of us have
wistfully thought about telling our boss what Coe
contemplates doing in his 1978 classic
popularized by Johnny Paycheck. But the
lack of gumption and reason prevents
most of us
f r o m
putting our
thoughts into action.
Not Jim Riggleman.
Riggleman was the manger of the
Washington Nationals until he abruptly
quit on June 23 after his team had won
ten of its last eleven games. Perhaps
those lofty accomplishments
emboldened Riggleman to
confront his boss, Nats General
Manager Mike Rizzo, and ask
him to pick up the 2012 option
on his contract. But Rizzo was
having none of it.
To say the move was both surprising and
bizarre is an understatement. Riggleman
has managed four Major League clubs and
has always been referred to as a model
organization man, certainly not the type who
is inclined to rock the boat. Most observers
would have picked him as the last MLB
manager, other than the White Sox Ozzie
Guillen perhaps - to take such drastic action.
On the other hand, Riggleman could see the
handwriting on the wall. Despite his teams
success this season, Rigglemans third with the
Nationals, it had become painfully obvious to him that
Rizzo had no intention of handing him the reins of the club
long term. Riggleman was merely keeping the seat
warm for the name manager Rizzo was intent on hiring
after this season.
So Riggleman up and quit one of the most prestigious
jobs in all of sports. There are only 30 MLB managers
and hundreds of men spend a lifetime sacrificing
family, health, pride and dignity in the often futile
pursuit of one of those positions.
While Riggleman obviously disagreed with Rizzos
management approach, resigning essentially quitting on
his team is hardly an appropriate way to demonstrate
that displeasure. If employees resigned every time they
disagreed with their bosses, the current unemployment
rate, already at unacceptably high levels, would
spike considerably.
While Rigglemans actions run counter to his heretofore
reputation as loyal and committed, they likewise speak
volumes about Rizzo and his management style.
Rigglemans resignation will leave a black mark on
Rizzos resume. Bosses should be able to handle employee
disagreements in a manner where they dont spill over into
the public domain. If there were disagreements between
the two men as there undoubtedly are in any GM-
manager relationship they should have either been
resolved privately or at least kept under wraps.
Like the hypothetical person in Coes song, Riggleman
worked long and hard without receiving what he perceived
to be his just reward. But unlike his musical counterpart,
Rigglemans actions were irrevocable.

installation at South Carolina's Parris Island.

says Brig. Gen. Loretta Reynolds will take charge

graduate is taking command from Brig. Gen.
Frederick Padilla, who will lead the 3rd Marine
Division in Okinawa, Japan.
Reynolds has been a Marine for 24 years. She's also
going to be in charge of Marines' Eastern
Recruiting Region, which covers the 23 states
east of the Mississippi River. She has been
a communications officer and commanded
Marines from platoon to battalion levels.

Time Warner Cable has partnered with Current TV for a premiere screening of the
Networks much anticipated original documentary series 4th and Forever, which
chronicles the 2010 football season of Long Beach Polytechnic High School, touted by
Sports Illustrated as the Sports School of the Century. The special event was recently
held at AMC Downtown Disney District 12 theatres in Anaheim, with kids from the Boys
& Girls Club of Huntington Valley attending, along with Long Beach Poly alum/NFL
free-agent Darnell Bing and Long Beach Poly Coach Raul Lara, who participated in a ques-
tion and answer session with the students.
4th and Forever airs on Current TV (Channel 142 on Time Warner Cable) on
Thursdays at 9:00 PM.
Each episode documents the trials and tribulations of the promising team helmed by Head
Football Coach Raul Lara, whose nearly 20 years of coaching experience at Long Beach
Poly includes 100 wins in nine seasons as Poly's Head Coach. Polys historic program also
boasts the largest roster of high school players who have gone on to the NFLand an alumni
list that reads like a who's who of sports and entertainment. Graduates include Philadelphia
Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson and offensive lineman Winston Justice; the Arizona
Cardinals linebacker Pago Togafau; San Diego Padres Hall of Fame baseball star Tony
Gwynn; the Philadelphia Phillies Chase Utley; former Seattle Mariners outfielder Milton
Bradley; actor John Wayne, actress Cameron Diaz and rapper Snoop Dogg; and former
professional tennis player Billie Jean King.
Shot on location in Long Beach, California and throughout Southern California, the series
explores how the team is a point of pride for a community that struggles with poverty, drugs,
and gangs and will document the personal relationships the players have with their
families on and off the field. For Coach Lara, whose full-time job is working the graveyard
shift as a Deputy Probation Officer, the football program provides its players a way out;
everyone is pushing ahead for that "golden ticket" - a college scholarship and a better life.

Philong Huynh convicted of rape
and murder of local resident.

S
an Diego County Superior Court convicted Philong
Huynh of the 2008 murder of Dane Williams, who
was in San Diego for a sports retailing convention.
It all started in a bar in downtown San Diego, according
to testimony.
Williams' body was found wrapped in a blanket in an
alley a few blocks from Huynh's apartment.
An autopsy was inconclusive on the cause of death, but
the medical examiner said Williams had a potentially
lethal amount of drugs and alcohol in his system.

suggested that Huynh, an
employee of a medical supply
store, had a pattern of meeting
straight men in bars, drugging
them and then sexually
assaulting them.

n Saturday, July 16, the Fountain Valley Community Foundation will be
hosting an electronic waste (e-waste) collection event for local citizens
to drop-off their unwanted electronic items.
The event will take place in the parking lot next to the Fountain Valley
Recreation Center at 16400 Brookhurst Street from 9am to 4pm. This is a free
service offered to residents to properly dispose of their e-waste and help divert
waste from landfills.
Hundreds of millions of retired computers, cell phones, and electronics sit idle
or are discarded by Americans every year, eventually
contributing to landfill waste. Toxic substances like
lead, cadmium, and mercury that are commonly used
in these products can contaminate the
land, water, and air. We
need to make good choices
about what to do with
our e-waste to help ensure a
clean environment for future
generations.
Acceptable household e-waste
items include televisions, PC
systems, laptops, monitors, home
entertainment systems, cell phones,
desktop copiers, printers, fax
machines, keyboards, DVD and
VCR players, audio devices, and
loose wires in working condition or
not. Items not accepted are fluorescent
lamps, microwaves, vacuums, and cooling
units such as refrigerators.

U.S. Winners To Compete In Quiksilver
'King of the Groms' Global Finals In France
This Fall
Surfersvillage Global Surf News,
Huntington Beach Quiksilver crowned
Cameron Richards 2011 'King of the Groms'
winner in Huntington Beach in a competition
that saw some massive wave destruction by
64 of the top groms in the country, ages 8-16.
In addition to winning the title and a $900
cash prize, 16-year-old Cameron will also be
going on an all-expense paid trip to the
Quiksilver Pro France to compete in
the Global King of the Groms World
Championships this October. "I'm super
psyched. I've never been to France before
and I've only heard good things about it,"
said Cameron Richards. "I cant wait, It's
gonna be sick!"
The competition was held in waist -to -chest
high all day glassy in the morning, with on
shores in the afternoon. Cameron's solid
forehand moves and making his
connections from the
outside to the inside
was what netted 9
skins to move into
first place. Jake
Marshall who was
recently touted in
Surfing Magazine as
the NSSA's #1 surfer,
was runner up.

Quiksilver Pro France.

harps Solar Energy Solutions
Group will
relocate from
Sharps western
regional office in
Huntington Beach,
Calif. to its campus
in Camas, a
company official
confirmed Friday.
The solar group
has 35 employ-
ees, said Eric Hafter, senior vice-president for the Sharp division
that oversees all of the companys solar operations in the Americas.
Hafter said its not yet clear how many of the employees will
transfer from California.
The relocation will begin in August and is likely to take a couple
of months, he said.
Obviously some people are concerned about leaving their lives
behind, Hafter said. I'm thrilled. Its going to be a great place
for our organization.
Sharp Solars arrival will make it the third subsidiary of Japan-based
Sharp. Corp. to share a Camas campus. Already located side-by-side
on Northwest Pacific Rim Boulevard are Sharp Laboratories of
the Americas, which specializes in digital displays, and Sharp Micro-
electronics of the Americas, which specializes in marketing the
companys high-tech products.
John Marck, president of Sharp Microelectronics of the
Americas, said having the companys three major technology
development units in Camas creates a tremendous amount of synergy
from a technology standpoint.
Having as many fast food restaurants as we have in Huntington Beach
along with the new rage in opening kick-boxing facilities might be our
new bright spot in the local economy.

Beach Police
Department
detectives actively
enforce internet
crimes to protect
children from sexual
predators. In the fall
of 2010, our detectives
developed information
on a subject distribut-
ing child pornography
using file sharing
software on the
internet.
On November
2, 2010, Huntington Beach Police Department
detectives served a search warrant at a residence in
Huntington Beach. Detectives obtained evidence of
child pornography inside the residence. Our
detectives arrested David Brian White, 52, pursuant
to search warrant served at his house. After he was
arrested, David White posted bail and had a future
scheduled court date. A press release was done pur-
suant to this arrest and covered by local news media.
The Huntington Beach Police Department
detectives submitted this case for review to the
Offices of United States Attorney. The case was
presented to a Federal Grand Jury and an arrest war-
rant was issued for David Brian White, now 53, for
federal charges of possession of child pornography
and distribution of child pornography. The case
is now being prosecuted as a federal crime instead
of a state crime.
On June 21, 2011, David White was arrested on this
federal warrant by Huntington Beach detectives at a
residence in Fountain Valley and booked at the
Huntington Beach Police Department city jail. David
White was transferred to federal custody today for
his criminal arraignment.

atalie Kotsch has been
honored with the title 2011
Huntington Beach 4th of
July Community Grand Marshal,
said Patricia Stier, Director of the
2011 Fourth of July Executive
Board. Natalie will ride in the famed
4th of July Parade. The theme
for this years celebration is
Celebrating Freedom.
When Natalie Kotsch arrived in
Huntington Beach in 1976, she
didnt just find a place to live, she
jumped into community service. She
chaired the committee to develop the
first ordinance for Mobile Home
Park Conversion and the Downtown
Merchants Guild.
And, in the early 1980s, the vision
that would become her lifes work
and passion began to take shape: a
museum celebrating the surfing
culture that had put
Huntington Beach
on the map. Its
purpose is to tell
the story of surfing
and its historic link
to Surf City. In 1987,
a small, city-owned building on
Walnut became its location, and
in 1987, the Huntington Beach
International Surfing Museum was
officially opened.
Small but dynamic, the museum
has become an international icon and
houses some of the most valuable ar-
tifacts of surfing culture in the world,
including fellow parade honoree,
Dick Dales, first electric guitar.
Along the way, Natalie earned the
distinctions of Citizen of the Year in
1991, Realtor of the Year in 1992,
and was inducted into the Surfing
Walk of Fame in 1998.
In Natalie Kotsch, a small town
Canadian girl turned surfing icon,
Celebrating Freedom meant the
freedom to celebrate her community,
dream big and leave a place better
for having lived there.

The term New World wine is used quite
literally to describe wines coming from New
World wine producing countries, such
as the United States, Australia, New
Zealand, Chile, South Africa or

World countries only started producing

seventeenth centuries, following

raised was the way to go
when buying fish, to avoid mercury contamination. But are
there other concerns about farmraised that make some fish a
poor choice for good health? What are the safest fish to buy
and which should be avoided? And what about those frozen
blocks of fish I get at Trader Joes? Are they safe to eat?

ercury is a neurotoxin that settles into the
ocean in large concentrations after we spew
it out of industrial smokestacks when
burning fossil fuels like coal and oil. It is
then taken up by smaller
sea life such as plankton
and then spread up
through the food chain
as larger fish eat smaller
ones. We humans then
eat the mercury-laced
seafoodwild salmon,
tuna, swordfish and
other fishand breathe it
in our air. Repeated
exposure to mercury
pollution can cause brain,
kidney and developmental
problems for people.
Farm-raised fish may
have somewhat less exposure to mercury than their
wild free-foraging cousins because they are usually
fed a controlled diet, often consisting of more grains
and soy, a cheaper and more abundant source of
calories, than fishmeal. But they can still absorb mer-
cury, since most fish farms are themselves located in
the ocean, just close to or abutting the shoreline.
Farmed fish can also absorb PCBs and dioxins, as
the near-shore waters they occupy are the first stop
for run-off from land-based sources of pollution. And
the fact that their primary feed source comes from
conventionally grown terrestrial crops means that
their diets can include trace amounts of pesticides and
herbicides as well. Also, most farmed fish are exposed
to dose after dose of antibiotics to keep diseases and
pests at bay in their crowded underwater pens, much
in the way factory farmed land animals are drugged
to help them cope with cramped, unsanitary
conditions. In fact, studies have shown that
farm-raised fish have more toxins overall than
their wild-caught cousins, though exceptions of
course do exist.

which fish are safe
and which are not is
to download a region-
specific seafood buying
g u i d e f r o m t h e

Aquariums Seafood
Watch program. These
guides aid the deci-
sion-making process
when shopping for
seafood in a store or
ordering it at a restau-
rant by dividing the
fish available in that part of the country into three
categories: Best Choices, GoodAlternatives andAvoid.
And bring your Seafood Watch guide to Trader
Joes as wellat least for now. In 2010, after months
of lobbying by Greenpeace and a growing number of
concerned shoppers, Trader Joes agreed to offer only
sustainable seafood in its stores by the end of 2012.
To its credit, they already removed endangered
Chilean Sea Bass from shelves in 2005, followed by
Orange Roughy in 2009 and Red Snapper in 2010.
In the spirit of its recent pledge, however, Trader
Joes is now working with third-party, science-based
organizations to establish definitions and parameters
for addressing customer concerns about overfishing,
destructive catch or production methods, and the
importance of marine reserves. Until 2013 at Trader
Joesand indefinitely at other stores that havent
made specific commitments regarding the
sustainability of their seafoodmake sure to check
that labels disclose the type of fish for sale and its
source in regard to wild or farm-raised, and then
check that info against the Seafood Watch list.

like Northern California's Infineon Raceway working
toward sustainability, announcing this week the installation

David Kiley of AOLAuto news says..."Certain
driving practices may put you at a higher risk for
skin cancer Summer is upon us, which means
more of the country is driving with the window
down, elbow resting on the door.
If that sounds like you, consider limiting your
open air driving to an open sunroof, and only if
you wear a hat. That's because a new study shows
a link between driving and the incidence of skin
cancer on the left sides of people who drive a lot
the side exposed to the sun.
Researchers at the University of Washington
in Seattle have found that Americans have a
tendency to develop the worst forms of skin
cancer notably melanomas and merkel cell
carcinomas on the left side of their bodies.
There is an especially high incidence of cancers
discovered on the upper arm, according to a study
published in The Journal of the American
Academy of Dermatology.
This report adds to a growing body of evidence
that driving can increase a motorist's exposure to
ultra-violet (UV) light, which is linked to skin
cancer. In countries like the U.S., where drivers
sit on the left side of their car, studies have found
more cancers form on the left side. Other
research, including a 1986 report from Australia,
found that in countries where the steering wheel
is situated on the other side of the vehicle, there
are more cancers and pre-cancerous growths on
the right side of a driver.
That's pretty compelling evidence that driving
has a big impact on incidence of skin cancer.
The incidence of cancer is most severe, suggest
the authors of the new University of Washington
study, for people who drive with a window open,
drive convertibles, or those who simply spend an
extensive amount of time behind the wheel; those,
for example, who make their living driving.
The solution is rather simple. Auto
glass today filters out most of the
bad UV that can cause skin
cancer, so driving with windows
up and the air conditioner on is a
better choice, even though your
fuel economy will be worse. Too, side glass
does not have quite as much UV blocking
material as windshields.
Alayer of glass tinting applied by an after-
market detailing shop is one answer,
especially for those who drive for a living
and are in a vehicle all day long. Long
sleeve shirts for those drivers is also
an obvious choice, though
warm summer days seem to
beg for short sleeves. On
those days, sunscreen on
your arm, neck, face and
head is advised.
Most people would not think
of applying sun screen if they intend
to be in the car all day. But a bit of
prevention could
be worth a lot of
cure.

tricting is the process
of changing the bound-
aries of politi-
cal districts

each Senator, Assem-

of Equalization member represents
approximately the same number of

What will the
Commission do?
The 14-member Commission according to the
Act will be made up of five Republicans, five
Democrats, and 4 not affiliated with either of
those two parties but belong to
another party or are decline-to-
state. According to the Act, the
Commission must draw the
district lines in conformity
with strict, nonpartisan
rules designed to create
districts of relatively
equal population that
will provide fair rep-
resentation for all
Californians. The
Commission must hold
public hearings and accept
public comment. After hear-
ing from the public and draw-
ing the maps for the 40 Senate
districts, 80 Assembly districts,
and four Board of Equalization dis-
tricts, the Commission must vote on the new
maps to be used for the next decade. To approve
the new maps, the maps must receive nine yes
votes from the Commissionthree yes votes
from members registered with the two largest
parties, and three from the other members.

Redistricting Commission:
We own and operate a 20 year old
community Newspaper service the
Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley
Westminster, Seal and Sunset Beach
communities. In every aspect of
community life -we share infrastructure,
culture, schools, churches and recreational
past-times as simple as overlapping school
districts, other more complicated but
emotional environmental concepts like
Bolsa Chica Wetlands and Talbert March,
the Sanitation District, Flood Plane
realities and more.
Our school systems cross borders among
all these cities.Our public safety apparatus
share joint power agreement based on both
legal obligations and fact of proximity and
matter of fact realities of supporting each
population base.
Community sports teams, High Schools,
club sports blend together as one closely
inter-related group of men, women and
children. There are no physical boundaries
but there does exist a series of common
socio economic political bonds resulting in
tri-city Chamber of commerce efforts, a net
work of safety nets built around the
Nation's most successful Boys and Girls
Clubs amalgamation, regional community
clinic faculty, hospitals that all paramedics
use to transport their clients to within the
blanket of trust.
I can't speak to the politics of any
decisions -but a Thesis can be created
showing that there is no, would be very
little connectivity between Irvine and
Huntington Beach; two independent award
winning communities but for different
reasons, different cultures and very
different business -economic and socio-
political demographic concepts.
We are not a planned community. We are
a neighborhood of men, women and
children who, when prosperity confront
them, they typically choose to move up and
stay within rather than move up and move
out of our community. That results in 2nd
and third generation residents retaining
legacy issues with all the elements of the
community discussed. Children of children
are attending the same schools.
Please do not change our representation
borders. Our political leadership team
of varying political philosophy and
consistently fought for our needs and any
attempt to dismantle that umbrella of
strategic mission consistency would result
in less effective, less intense and less
consistent voter representation. Talk about
No Taxation without Representation...
almost exclusively special districts, school
boards and assessment areas are exclusive
to North West Orange County and our
intimate, border sharing, sometimes
overlapping island real estate based
communities act as one more often than not.

robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, vehicle
theft and larceny.
Huntington Beach had 1,933 crimes for the
first five months this year down from 2,129 for the
same period in 2010.
Crime has decreased in the city
for this period, except for murder.
Huntington Beach has seen two
murders so far in 2011 compared
with none for the same period in 2010,
police reported.
Rape is down from 17 cases in
2010 to 14 in 2011. Robbery
dropped from 51 in 2010 to 44
in 2011. Burglary decreased
from 331 in 2010 to 296 in
2011. Vehicle theft is down
from 119 in 2010 to 102
in 2011 and larceny is down
from 1,487 to 1,369 this year,
police reported.
I
ts been a low interest rate environment for a
couple years now. As our economy struggles to
make even the slightest improvements, its likely
well remain in a low rate environment for quite a
while longer. While this is good news for those who
are looking to borrow money at record low rates of
interest, its less optimistic for those who are trying
to save. The interest yields on most savings accounts
now are down to a fraction of one percent. But there
is a creative way to get a fixed two percent yield on a
portion of your savings.
Ordinarily, a two percent
yield is not much to think
twice about. However, that is
multiple times more than the
rates being offered on todays
savings or money market
accounts. Even certificates of
deposit (CDs) arent offering
that high of a yield unless
youre willing to commit your
funds for five years or longer.
With the future of our economy
remaining uncertain, there is
another way to earn a two per-
cent yield without making a five
year commitment. Simply
establish an escrow account on your mortgage.
Escrow accounts, also known as impound accounts,
are established by a mortgage lender to ensure your
property taxes and homeowners insurance are paid
on time. Impound accounts are required on all
government loans, primarily FHA and VA loans. On
conventional loans, whether or not to establish an
impound account is usually the consumers choice.
The only exception comes when the loan amount
exceeds 80% of the propertys value. At this
higher debt threshold, most lenders will require
an impound account.
There are restrictions and limitations to how much
a lender can reserve in an escrow account. The federal
law governing this is the Real Estate Settlement and
Procedures Act, better known as RESPA. At the state
level, California is the most advantageous state for
consumers. California law requires that the lender pay
the consumer a rate of 2% on the entire balance of an
escrow account. Heres that 2% yield.
An average homeowner who pays $4,000 per year
in property taxes and another $1,000 per year
in homeowners
insurance has
roughly $5,000 they
can retain in such
an account. At a 2%
yield, thats an
easy $100 per year
in interest the
consumer can earn.
Considering the
taxes and insurance
need to be paid
anyways, this is
tantamount to $100
of free money.
Someone whos
debating whether
or not to establish an escrow account at the time they
obtain their loan should also know about another
piece of California legislation regarding escrow
accounts. In California, it is illegal for lenders to
charge a higher rate or closing costs when a consumer
wishes to NOT establish an impound account. This
law wasnt written very well though, because lenders
are easily able to work around this by offering a
discount on either rate or closing costs for consumers
who DO want to establish an escrow account.
Obviously, the letter of the law and the spirit of the
law are two different things. However, this is
something to keep in mind when considering a new
loan. Recognize that certain may offer a slightly better
deal if you establish this
escrow account.
For those who already
have a great loan and are
not looking to change
it, there is still the
option of obtaining
this 2% savings rate.
Simply call your
current lender
and inform them
that youd like to create an escrow account for your
current loan. They will need to know how much your
homeowners insurance is and when the policy
renews. Theyll also need to know how much you pay
in property taxes. With this information, theyll be
able to calculate exactly how much youll be able
to transfer from your current savings account into
a new escrow account.
The best part about this is that theres no penalty for
closing the account later. So, when you need that
money for something else, or your finally able to get
a higher yield on another investment vehicle, one
more phone call to your lender should inherit you a
full refund of your escrow balance. Just keep in mind
that some lenders require you to have the escrow
account for a minimum time frame, usually
six months.
