Group 4 Hermeneutics 101 Batch 3 2 Peter 1:5-9 Recipient: Christians everywhere, but specifically in Asia Minor where there

was a rise of false teachers in the church who influence Christians with false doctrines. Date: Between AD 64-70 Relationship and Authority: Peter writes to all Christians. Peter is one of the apostles/disciples of Christ. Apostle in Greek is apostolos, which means a delegate, a messenger, one sent forth with orders. Expected Response: The Christians would strive to possess the qualities in order to be effective and productive in the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Christians would be warned against false teachings and be encouraged to grow in the spirit and knowledge of God. 2 Peter 1:5-9 5For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. 8For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9But if anyone does not have them, he is nearsighted and blind, and has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins. Main Idea: Make every effort to add to your faith Make every - to bring in, to contribute Effort earnestness or sincerity in accomplishing, promoting, and striving after anything Add to supply, furnish, present, equip Faith is the conviction of truth of anything. In the New Testament it is the conviction or belief of mans relationship to God and divine things, generally with the included idea of trust and holy passion born of faith and joined with it. A conviction that God exists and is the Creator and Ruler of all things, the provider of eternal salvation through Christ. A strong and welcome conviction or belief that Jesus is the Messiah, through whom we obtain eternal salvation in the kingdom of God. (John 6:27, Hebrews 11:6, Luke 24:21, Romans 5:2)

In Simpler Terms: We must equip our conviction or belief in Jesus with all sincerity. Colossians 1:10-11 And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience... How shall we do this? Add goodness to faith (Philippians 4:8) Goodness virtue, moral excellence, modesty, purity Add knowledge to goodness (2Timothy 3:16-17) Knowledge understanding, moral wisdom, right living, knowing what is lawful and unlawful for Christians Add self control to knowledge (Galatians 5:22-23) Self-control mastering our desires and passion, especially our sensual appetites Add perseverance to self control (Romans 5:3-5) Perseverance endurance, in the New Testament it means the characteristic of a man who is not swerved from his deliberate purpose and loyalty to faith by even the greatest trials and sufferings Add godliness to perseverance (1 Timothy 4:7, Philippians 2:12-13) Godliness reverence, worship, admiration, amazement, respect towards God Add brotherly kindness to godliness (Hebrews 6:10-12, 12:15) Brotherly kindness love of brothers or sisters, brotherly love; in the New Testament, the love that Christians cherish for each other as brethren. Add Love to brotherly kindness (John 5:41-44, 1 Corinthians 13:4-8) Love charity, compassion, benevolence, generosity 2 Peter 1:8 We need to possess these qualities in increasing measure Possess to be in you, to acquire Increasing measure abound, exist in abundance So we may not be ineffective and unproductive of the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. Ineffective barren, yielding no return because of inactivity, lazy, useless, idle. Unproductive unfruitful, influenced by the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches; failing to supply faith with the qualities needed. Knowledge Precise and correct knowledge; in the New Testament it means knowledge of things ethical and divine. (Ephesians 1:5-17) 2 Peter 1:9 But if anyone does not have them, he is nearsighted and blind, and has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins. (Hebrews 4:2) Nearsighted cannot see afar off, to see dimly, to see just what is near.

Has been cleansed purged from, a cleansing, purification, ritual washing, a cleansing of the guilt of sins through the sacrifice of Christ, moral cleansing. Blind blind, mentally blind, darkened by smoke, vision blocked. Sins when one misses or wanders from the path of uprightness and honor, to do or go wrong; a violation of the divine law in thought or in act.

Application Meditation in Gods Word (Psalms 1:2, Joshua 1:8) Learn the right application of biblical truth (2 Timothy 3:15-17) Scriptures testify about Jesus Christ (John 5:39) Be knowledgeable about God and be able to teach it to others (Ezra 7:10) Fellowship with other Christians (Acts 2:42-47, Hebrews 10:25) Discover your spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 12:1, 1 Corinthians 14:12, Ephesians 1:17-21)
