New Handbridge play area opens

A 65,000 play area in Handbridge has been officially opened. The development in Allington Place was funded by a grant from WREN, a not for profit business that awards grants to community projects from funds donated by Waste Recycling Group (WRG) to the Landfill Communities Fund. The play area is a Government Play Capital initiative and received contributions from Handbridge Community Association and from local Councillors member budgets. Councillor Stuart Parker, Executive Member for Culture and Recreation, said: The play area is being enjoyed by children and young people living in the area. It has been designed as a natural play area and where possible uses natural materials. All types of play are catered for. There is a basket swing, embankment slide, a natural stone and timber trail and a ball area. Bark and sand have been used throughout and new footpaths have been created. Richard Smith, Grants Manger for WREN, said: Over 11 years ago, WRENs first play area in Cheshire was completed at Prenton Place, not that far from Allington Place and a scheme that made a real difference to Handbridge. Im delighted we have been able to provide funding for further play improvements, this time at Allington Place, and am sure that the community will use and enjoy the site for many years to come. Added Handbridge Park Councillor Razia Daniels: I am absolutely delighted to see this wonderful project completed. I was very impressed to see the enthusiasm and contribution of the children to the design of this project. I would like to thank everyone involved who worked very hard to make this such a success.

Beach Body BlaST!

Time is running out to get yourself in tip top shape for this summer, so we need to act fast but more importantly act fast and act in the correct way. There is no point in panic dieting and seeing results on the scales but not actually looking or feeling any better. Any weight loss as a result of crash dieting is likely to be as a result of dehydration (we get a lot of water from what we eat) and muscle wastage. When we crash diet, our bodies go into starvation mode, our bodies have not developed that significantly since our times as cavemen, so when we vastly reduce our quantity our bodies panic. Assuming that we are still living in caves and wearing little but a loin cloth, the body begins to worry where the next food is going to come from and hence actually holds on to our fat. It is that fat which is going to help us survive, so ironically we dont burn it and instead begin to break down muscle, but it is muscle which actually helps us burn fat so with less muscle we burn less fat. So put simply DONT CRASH DIET!!!! summer. We need to up our protein intake, reduce our processed food and sugar intake and do short, sharp, high intensity exercise.

The exercise:

Do 3x15 repetitions of body weight squats. Hold the arms out in front and squat so that the bum is lower than the knees, then stand upright. Keep the pace high, but make sure you keep good form. Do 3x30 sec holds of the plank. Do one set of squats followed by one set of the plank until you have done each exercise three times. If you are not familiar with the exercises, have a look on the internet where you will find plenty of examples.

The Nutrition:

Get breakfast right, ditch the cereal and instead try two hard boiled eggs and half a avocado served on two pieces of rye bread, all washed down with a cup of green tea. Remember nothing worth having comes easy, so be prepared to try new things and open your mind and you will get results. Good luck!!

So what to do?

We need a mixture of the correct exercise and good nutrition, combine the two and you are well on the way to looking better on the beach this

Large groups gathering within the Meadows drinking and causing a nuisance to members of the public. Youths are often abusive and intimidating and leave litter behind. Plans to address the issue: Regular high visibility patrols will continue to take place and youths have been spoken to and moved on from the area. ACNE IN THE SUMMER

I HAvE recently been enjoying the television programme The Human Body and was fascinated during the last programme when they showed in graphic detail how the body repairs itself after an injury to the skin.
Later in the programme competitors were shown taking part in a marathon in Death Valley in Colorado, United States, where daytime temperatures soar to 40 degrees centigrade and higher and how the greatest risk for competitors was chronic dehydration. Our amazing bodies have a way of combating this problem. When the body is exposed to heat the sebaceous glands in the skin produce large amounts of sebum or oil that coat the skin, thus helping to keep the moisture in! How clever. There is sadly a down side to this phenomenon. If you suffer from acne or acne rosacea, where you already have a surplus of oil, summer temperatures can increase your oil or sebum production by up to 80%! Many acne sufferers have said to me how much better their condition is while they are on holiday as the sun helps

to dry out the oil. However, they also say that about 2 weeks after their holiday the spots erupt dreadfully. This is explained by the overproduction of the oil in the heat, the overloading of the pores, blockage, a build up of bacteria and then the spots. If you suffer from any form of acne it does not mean you can never go on a sun holiday, but you need to take precautions. Keep your face out of the sun by wearing a hat, stay in the shade between midday and 3.00p.m., sunbathe with your face in the shade, drink plenty of water and cool drinks, cool yourself regularly in the sea, pool or under a cool shower. At night try sleeping on your back. When sleeping face down or on your side your skin is in contact with the pillow causing more heat to the skin. All skin preparations should be oil free. This includes your sun tan lotion. PRIORI(R) Daily Defense SPF 30 is oil free, light feeling and recommended and endorsed by the Skin Cancer Foundation of America. The Hough Green Clinic offer for July is 10% discount on all sun screens, helping you and your family to keep safe in the sun. Dont forget the PRIORI(R) Perfecting Minerals with an SPF 25 and UVA 10 that offer great coverage to spots, calm reddened skin and give the skin a healthy glow naturally. Have a wonderful summer! Go wild about art

One of the jewels in the crown of the Cheshire summer; the national exhibition of Wildlife Art (neWA) will be showcasing almost 400 paintings and sculptures of the highest quality in a dazzling variety of styles. each July, this delightful exhibition, now firmly established at the award-winning Gordale garden centre at Burton, on the Wirral, promises an experience the whole family can enjoy for free. And, during its first three days, the exhibition will be augmented by live art demonstrations by celebrated British wildlife artists. each day of neWAs Wildlife Weekend will feature at least three artists showing and sharing their skills on behalf of conservation charities. On the opening day of the show, Friday 15th July, Pollyanna Pickering will be demonstrating her immensely popular painting technique alongside the Born Free Foundations Chris Wright. Saturdays guests include Wirral-born artist Clare Shaughnessy and the local Wildlife Trusts, while Sunday 17th will see bird painters and woodcarvers joined by representatives of the RSPBs neighbouring Inner Marsh Farm reserve. The exhibition continues at Gordale until Sunday, 31st July. For more information visit our Facebook wall via www.newa-uk.com

New heart screening service could be a life saver

Chester based businessman, tim savidge, is at the helm of a new company providing a vascular screening service. Joining forces with Anna hughes, who lost her sister to a heart attack and had her own brush with serious cardiovascular illness, the business, Young@heart aims to help people take control of their health through early detection and prevention. Operating from local clinics, Young@heart offers a new and innovative service using a wrist sensor to pick up arterial pulse waves. this provides a measurement which is used to assess the age of the arteries. Pulse wave technology was recently featured on BBC Breakfast and radio 4 as a way to measure blood pressure as it leaves the heart (CAsP) rather than the traditional test on the arm (known as the brachial pressure). Gradual stiffening of arteries is a natural part of the ageing process. however, lifestyles, level of activity, diet and hereditary factors all have an effect on how quickly this happens. A higher than average reading is a good indicator for cardiovascular disease and reduced life expectancy. tim savidge says this test is great for people who may not show outward signs of cardiovascular disease but may later develop problems. those who have a family history of heart attack or stroke are at greatest risk. Identifying a health problem before it becomes serious is vital. We find that many clients have far higher readings than expected. this has been helpful in allowing people to consider their options. By offering a follow up scan were able to provide the added benefit of being able to measure the effect of our recommendation. Anna hughes concludes, I cannot know for certain this screening would have saved my sisters life but Im convinced it could save others. the consultation takes half an hour and results are explained during the appointment.

Inspectors give praise to a good and improving school

QUeeNS Park High School is celebrating tanother good report from a team led by one of Her Majestys Inspectors. In their report, Ofsted (Office for Standards in Education) say that Queens Park is a good and improving school with a good sixth form, and the contribution of the students to the wider community is outstanding. The inspection report highlights a number of areas of success for the school. All groups of students achieve well across the school and the rates of progress they make have accelerated since the previous inspection. Inspectors found that the school is well led and managed and comment that The perceptive headteacher, supported well by a dynamic senior leadership group and talented teams of faculty leaders and year learning managers, ensures there is an accurate awareness of school performance and a clear direction for development. The inspectors observed a number of lessons and commented Students behave well in lessons and around school, showing respect and courtesy to their peers, their teachers and teaching assistants and to visitors. Good personal outcomes, accelerating academic progress and rising attainment demonstrate that students are well prepared for life after formal education. The school is now working hard, and with Never fight an inanimate object - P. J. ORourke success, to share exemplary practice across all subjects. Students enjoy finding things out for themselves and taking increased responsibility for their own learning and progress. They also praised the schools curriculum which is under continuous review because the school is always concerned to ensure that it meets the ever-changing needs and interests of all groups of students. There is an increasing vocational element within the curriculum and the personal, social and health education programme has a strong impact on students emotional well-being and on their understanding of the feelings of others. Headteacher Stephen Casey said, We are delighted that Inspectors found that more than 75% of lessons are good and outstanding our focus on teaching and learning is making a real difference. I was pleased with their comment that Teaching is good and teachers demonstrate a secure knowledge of their subjects. Effective progressmonitoring systems enable clear and challenging targets to be set for students, who take increasing ownership of their own learning and progress. In her letter to parents accompanying the report, Jenny Turner, chair of governors, says I was very pleased to hear the comments made by students and parents to the Inspectors.

Flowers For July

GardeninG by Janet HeatH

Many of us buy plants in spring because it is the traditional time to start gardening but the plants we buy are mostly spring flowering and that can leave your borders feeling a bit let down in mid-summer so now is a good time to visit your local garden centre and buy some plants for summer colour.
Consider some of the following perennials which will flower year after year. Campanula lactiflora is a tall plant with stems of bell shaped flowers in pink, white or blue. Plant it at the back of a border in sun or light shade. The Shasta daisy, Leucanthemum x superbum Snowcap, has white daisy flowers and also likes a sunny position. I love the sword shaped leaves of Crocosmia so try taller varieties with their clusters of red, yellow or orange flowers. They like a sunny place and do best in moist soil that does not dry out. In dry years flowering can be disappointing but when happy, some tall varieties like Lucifer, will reach 1 metre in height.

Penstemons are also good for flowering from summer into autumn with tubular bell flowers in a wide range of colours. Last winter my 2 plants were killed by the prolonged cold spell but they had survived 5 years. Its easy to take cuttings from them. Cut off new green shoots (not woody stems) about 10 cm long and remove the lower leaves. Place in a glass of water and you may find that some will produce roots after a few weeks if you change the water regularly. Pot up into compost when there are lots of roots. In July cut back flowering shrubs such as lilac, weigela and philadelphus, just after they finish flowering, if you want to reduce them in size. Cut off dead flowers from roses, penstemons, delphiniums, centaurea, nepeta and lupins and you may well get a second flush of flowers in late summer always a bonus! Dead heading annuals in pots will keep them flowering and do remember to keep pots well watered in dry weather. Sow salad seeds of radishes, rocket, lambs lettuce and lettuce for autumn cropping.

Parrots make great pets. They have more personality than goldfish - Chevy Chase
