Author Guidelines

The Journal of Medical Imaging and Radiation Oncology (formerly Australasian Radiology)adheres to the guidelines laid out by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editorshttp://www.icmje.org/. The acceptance criteria for all papers are the quality and originality of the research and its signicance to our readership. Except where otherwise stated, manuscripts are peer reviewed by two anonymous reviewers and the Editor. The Editorial Board reserves the right to refuse any material for publication. Final acceptance or rejection rests with the Editor-in-Chief SUBMISSION OF MANUSCRIPTS Manuscripts should be submitted online at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jmiro Authors must supply an email address as all correspondence will be by email. Two files should be supplied: The covering letter and the manuscript (in word or Rich text Format (rtf.)). The covering letter should be included as a file not for review. Manuscripts should be written so that they are intelligible to the professional reader who is not a specialist in the particular eld. Where contributions are judged as acceptable for publication on the basis of scientic content, the Editor or the Publisher reserve the right to modify typescripts to eliminate ambiguity and repetition and improve communication between author and reader. If extensive alterations are required, the manuscript will be returned to the author for revision. Contributions may take the form of Original Articles, Review Articles, Pictorial Essays, Technical Articles and Case Reports in the following categories: Radiology and Radiation Oncology. Case Reports will, however, only be considered if they are of exceptional scientific or educational interest. Pictorial Essays should contain an introduction that serves as a background to the article, the bulk of which should consist of illustrations and their legends. The illustrations should convey the message and each should illustrate a particular point. A maximum of 30 illustrations will be allowed. Letters to the Editor are welcome and should be given a short and pertinent title. Surname(s) and initials of the author(s) should be given at the end of the letter. The entire article (including tables) should be supplied as a single le. Only electronic gures should be supplied as separate les. Where possible, draft heavily mathematical papers in software such as Scientic Word, TeX or LaTex and ensure that the PDF page proofs are checked thoroughly for accuracy. The following instructions should be adhered to.

Submissions should be double-spaced. All margins should be at least 30 mm. Do not use the Enter at the end of lines within a paragraph. Turn the hyphenation option off; include only those hyphens that are essential to the meaning. Specify any special characters used to represent non-keyboard characters. Take care not to use l (ell) for 1 (one), O (capital o) for 0 (zero) or (German esszett) for Use a tab, not spaces, to separate data points in tables. (Gr eek beta).

If you use a table editor function, ensure that each data point is contained within a unique cell; i.e. do not use carriage returns within cells. Will authors please note that Word 2007 is not yet compatible with journal production systems. Unfortunately, the journal cannot accept Microsoft Word 2007 documents until such time as a stable production version is released. Please use Words Save As option therefore to save your document as an older (.doc) file type.

SOLE PUBLICATION Papers are accepted for publication in the Journal on the understanding that the content has not been published or submitted for publication elsewhere. This must be stated in the covering letter. COVERING LETTER The covering letter must contain an explanation of why the authors think their manuscript will be of interest to Journal of Medical Imaging and Radiation Oncology and its readers, an acknowledgement that all authors have contributed signicantly, and that all authors are in agreement with the content of the manuscript. In keeping with the latest guidelines of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, each authors contribution to the paper is to be quantied. Authors must also state that the protocol for the research project has been approved by a suitably constituted Ethics Committee of the institution within which the work was undertaken and that it conforms to the provisions of the Declaration of Helsinki (as revised in Edinburgh 2000), available at http://www.wma.net/e/policy/b3.htm. All investigations on human subjects must include a statement that the subject gave informed consent and patient anonymity should be preserved. Any experiments involving animals must be demonstrated to be ethically acceptable. Authors must affirm in the covering letter their compliance with Australian National Guidelines for animal usage in research, which can be found athttp://www.nhmrc.gov.au/publications/synopses/ea16syn.htmAuthors should declare any nancial support or relationships that may pose conict of interest. COPYRIGHT Authors publishing in the Journal will be asked to sign an Exclusive License Form. In signing this form it is assumed that authors have obtained permission to use any copyrighted or previously published material. All authors must read and agree to the conditions outlined in the an Exclusive License Form, and must sign the Form or agree that the corresponding author can sign on their behalf. Articles cannot be published until a signed an Exclusive License Form has been received. Authors can download the form from http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/ara_elf.pdf STYLE OF THE MANUSCRIPT Manuscripts should follow the style of the Vancouver agreement detailed in the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors revised Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals: Writing and Editing for Biomedical Publication, as presented athttp://www.ICMJE.org/. The Journal uses UK spelling and authors should therefore follow the latest edition of theConcise Oxford Dictionary. All measurements must be given in SI units.

Abbreviations should be used sparingly and only where they ease the readers task by reducing repetition of long, technical terms. Initially use the word in full, followed by the abbreviation in parentheses. Thereafter use the abbreviation. At the rst mention of a chemical substance, give the generic name only. Trade names should not be used. Drugs should be referred to by their generic names, rather than brand names. We strongly recommend that authors for whom English is not their native language seek assistance from a colleague familiar with English medical terminology when editing their manuscripts. This will ensure accuracy and clarity, and ensure the review of the manuscript is not delayed. PREPARATION OF THE MANUSCRIPT Manuscripts should be presented in the following order: (i) title page, (ii) abstract and key words, (iii) text, (iv) acknowledgements, (v) references, (vi) appendices, (vii) gure legends, (viii) tables (each table complete with title and footnotes) and (ix) gures. Footnotes to the text are not allowed and any such material should be incorporated into the text as parenthetical matter. Title page The title page should contain (i) the title of the paper, (ii) the full names of the authors and (iii) the addresses of the institutions at which the work was carried out together with (iv) the full postal and email address, plus facsimile and telephone numbers, of the author to whom correspondence about the manuscript, proofs and requests for offprints should be sent. The present address of any author, if different from that where the work was carried out, should be supplied in a footnote. The title should be short, informative and contain the major key words. A short running title (less than 40 characters, including spaces) should also be provided. Abstract and key words* All articles should have an abstract not exceeding 250 words.In the case of original research articles the abstract must be structured using the following headings: Introduction (including purpose of the study): Methods; Results; and Conclusions. The abstract should not contain references. Journal of Medical Imaging and Radiation Oncology requires that clinical trials submitted for its consideration are registered in a publicly accessible database. Authors should include the name of the trial register and their clinical trial registration number at the end of their abstract. If you wish the Editor(s) to consider an unregistered trial please explain briefly why the trial has not been registered. Five key words (for the purposes of indexing) should be supplied below the abstract, in alphabetical order, and should be taken from those recommended by the US National Library of Medicines Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) browser list (www.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/meshhome.html).

*An abstract is not required in the main document for Editorials, Case Reports and Letters to the Editor. Text Authors should use subheadings to divide the sections of their manuscript: Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion, Acknowledgements, and References. Acknowledgements The source of nancial grants and other funding should be acknowledged, including a frank declaration of the authors industrial links and affiliations. The contribution of colleagues or institutions sh ould also be acknowledged. Thanks to anonymous reviewers are not allowed. References The Vancouver system of referencing should be used. In the text, references should be cited using superscript Arabic numerals in the order in which they appear. If cited only in tables or gure legends, number them according to the rst identication of the table or gure in the text. In the reference list, the references should be numbered and listed in order of appearance in the text. Cite the names of all authors when there are six or fewer; when seven or more list the rst three followed by et al. Names of journals should be abbreviated in the style used in Index Medicus. Reference to unpublished data and personal communications should not appear in the list but should be cited in the text only (e.g. Smith A, 2000, unpublished data). If written by a person other than the author of the main text, the writers name should be included below the title. Equations Equations should be numbered sequentially with Arabic numerals; these should be ranged right in parentheses. All variables should appear in italics. Use the simplest possible form for all mathematical symbols. Tables Tables should be self-contained and complement, but not duplicate, information contained in the text. Tables should be numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals. Each table should be presented on a separate sheet of A4 paper with a comprehensive but concise legend above the table. Tables should be double-spaced and vertical lines should not be used to separate columns. Column headings should be brief, with units of measurement in parentheses; all abbreviations should be dened in footnotes. Footnote symbols: , , , , should be used (in that order) and *, **, *** should be reserved for P-values. Statistical measures such as SD or SEM should be identied in the headings. The table and its legend/footnotes should be understandable without reference to the text.

Figures

Figures should be supplied as .jpeg files during the review process to facilitate uploading and review. Should the manuscript be accepted, high-resolution (at least 300 d.p.i.) files saved as .tif format should be provided on acceptance of the manuscript. Please note that image files are required to be uploaded separately in your Manuscript Central submission and cannot be supplied embedded in the main document. Digital images supplied as low-resolution files cannot be published.

Colour gures

Colour figures are encouraged, and will not attract a cost to authors. Author(s) should stipulate which figures they would prefer published in black and white and which they would prefer published in colour. However, the final decision as to whether a figure is more suited to being published in black and white or colour will remain with the Editor.

Colour photographs should be submitted as JPEG files during the review process. Should a manuscript be accepted, TIFF files of 300 d.p.i. will be required.

Figure legends Legends should be self-explanatory and included at the end of the manuscript. The legend should incorporate denitions of any symbols used and all abbreviations and units of measurement should be explained so that the gure and its legend is understandable without reference to the text. (Provide a letter stating copyright authorization if gures have been reproduced from another source.)

ONLINE GUIDELINES If possible, authors should visit the Wiley-Blackwell websites for authors and www.blackwellpublishing.com/authors/digill.asp which detail further information on the preparation and submission of articles and gures.

PROOFS Proofs will be sent via email as an Acrobat PDF (Portable Document Format) le and should be returned within 3 days of receipt. Alterations to the text and gures (other than the essential correction of errors) are unacceptable at proof stage and authors may be charged for excessive alterations. Acrobat Reader will be required in order to read the PDF. This soft-ware can be downloaded (free of charge) from the following website: www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html Acrobat Reader will enable the le to be opened, read on screen, and printed out in order for any corrections to be added. Further instructions will be sent with the proof.

Authors should supply an email address to which PDF page proofs can be emailed. Proofs will be faxed if no email address is available. If absent, authors should arrange for a colleague to access their email, retrieve the PDF page proof and check and return them to the publisher on their behalf.
