Total Valid Proxies and Ballots 1,246 Election of Three Directors: Cliff Altschull 836 votes, Joy Bauserman 658, Leighton Cumming -- 492, Burt Marks 376, Valerie Palamountain 672, Ida Swenson 529. Congratulations to Cliff Altschull, Valerie Palamountain and Joy Bauserman, who were elected to three-year terms, ending June 2014. Director Dillon Resigns: At the June 23 Board of Directors, Director Gary Dillon announced his resignation from the Board, effective at the end of that meeting. Gary and his family will be moving to Richmond mid-July. LMOA extends its sincere appreciation and best wishes to Gary for his service to the community and to LMOA. The resignation leaves a vacancy on the Board with two years remaining on the term. LMOA Bylaws Section 5.14, Vacancies, give the Board four options for handling the vacancy: (1) The Board may choose a candidate from the election of directors at the previous Annual Meeting of Members. Any duly nominated [sic] candidate having received the greatest number of votes from the previous election of directors, and not having been elected . . . may be deemed to be elected, to fill the vacancy for the unexpired balance of the term of the vacancy to be filled. (2) The Board may call for a Special Meeting of the Members to fill the vacancy. (3) The Board may allow the vacancy to remain until the next annual meeting of the membership. (4) The vacancy may be filled by a member who receives the affirmative vote of a majority of the remaining directors then in office, at any regular or special meeting of the Board of Directors. The term of a director elected by the Board of Directors to fill a vacancy expires at the next members' meeting at which directors are elected. The Board will consider the vacancy at its July 28 regular meeting. CELEBRATE 4TH OF JULY ALL WEEKEND LONG From pool party for 21+ on Fri. evening, July 1, all the way through the giant fireworks display on the evening of Mon., July 4, Lake Monticellos big 4th of July weekend celebration is full of activities for families, singles, adults, kids, and everyone in between. New this year are the movie on the lawn, dance, Little Miss Independence Day, Lake Monticellos Got Talent, mini-golf and more. Returning old favorites are the 10th annual 5K Lake Monticello Spirit Run, sand sculpture, lake swim, backyard and pool games, music by Acoustic Cookin, the fireworks and more! The updated schedule is available in the Clubhouse Lobby, online at www.LMOA.org (click on the link) and on Facebook, and will be available at the information table in the backyard of the Clubhouse on July 4. Fireworks will be shot from Beach 3 on July 4, beginning at approximately 9:15PM. Good viewing venues include the Clubhouse lawn, Main Beach, dam and lake. Please Remember: Parking will not be permitted on the dam. All wheels must be completely off the pavement when parking along any street, to avoid interference with emergency and other traffic. Do not block driveways. Personal fireworks are not permitted. Marina Point is private property and not open for general use.

LMOA Administration and ECC Offices Will Be Closed on Monday, July 4. Have a safe and fun holiday! Trash Collection for Week of July 4: There will be no trash collection on Mon., July 4. Collection will run one day later than normal for the remainder of the week, ending with Fridays normal collection on Saturday. LMOA Is No Longer Accepting Applications for on-call temp help for the front office. Our thanks to all who applied. 2012 Budget Process Begins: A budget kickoff meeting, the first work session of the 2012 budget preparation schedule, will be held on Thurs., July 7, in the Terrace Room. The Board of Directors, Finance and other committees, General Manager and Staff will discuss general budget expectations, guidelines, etc. Members are welcome to attend. Time will be allotted for member comments of 5 minutes per member on the budget only. Sign up before the call to order. Seeking Candidates for Ad Hoc Committee on Pavilion: The Board of Directors has formed an ad hoc committee to begin working on the details for the proposed Colmenares Pavilion. The structure will be built at the golf course but will be open for a variety of uses. Candidates may be golfers or non-golfers, male or female and any age. If interested, please fill out a Committee Resource form, available at LMOA Office or on the website at www.LMOA.org, and return it to LMOA. Advisory to Boaters: Police Chief Tom Boisvert reports that VA laws for operating a boat while intoxicated are the same as for an automobile. A boat operator can be arrested for boating under the influence if the blood alcohol level is 0.08 or above. The VA Dept. of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) will have an officer patrolling at Lake Monticello on July 4 to enforce boating laws. VDGIF routinely patrols at other times as well. Penalties for boating under the influence (BUI) can include stiff monetary penalties, mandatory attendance at alcohol awareness classes and revocation of the privilege to operate a boat for at least a year. All operators of boats at Lake Monticello shall have a Lake Monticello boat license. After dark, the lake goes to no wake operation for all boats. Additionally, the Lake Monticello Water Safety Patrol will have a boat staffed and patrolling the Lake. VA laws do not prohibit alcohol onboard a boat as they prohibit open containers of alcohol in other areas, but it has been proven that consumption of alcohol by anyone in a boat increases the likelihood of death/injury should an accident occur. No Unregistered Boats Allowed in the Lake: Marina personnel will be monitoring boats to make sure the 2011 registration sticker is clearly visible. Additional personnel will be on duty on July 4 to enforce the policy requiring that all boats must be registered and the current sticker in use. Registrations will be accepted on July 4 until the Marina office closes at 7PM. Diving for Dam Work Resumes: Over the next several weeks, Watershed Services will be removing the non-functioning low level drain valve and installing a new valve at the headwall of the main dam sluiceway. The work will be done underwater requiring extensive dive work, and the red dive barge will once again be anchored in the lake near the dam. It is of the upmost importance to protect the safety of the divers and prevent disruption of crucial repairs. Boaters, please observe a 200-foot no boats allowed perimeter around the barge. Kids, Learn Tennis: The Lake Monticello Quick Start Tennis program will run July 11 - 14, from 9 to 10AM at Ashlawn Courts for ages 6 - 12. New students: $20 including mini-racket and three practice balls; returning students: $15 if you already have a mini-racket. Register at the LMOA Office. Fire Danger Very Real at Lake Monticello: The wooded nature of our community makes it especially vulnerable to wildfires. Please be cautious to keep our community safe: Never use personal fireworks. Dispose of cigarettes properly, never into the grass, leaves, mulch, woods, out car windows, etc. Watch your barbecue grill to make sure no sparks escape. Take care with power equipment so it doesn't ignite dry leaves and mulch. Lake Monticello enforces a no-burn policy all year round.

July 22 Deadline for Help to Homeowners Facing Foreclosure: If the economy or a medical condition puts you at risk of defaulting on your mortgage, there may be help from the Piedmont Housing Alliance (PHA). PHA is working with the new federal Emergency Homeowners Loan Program to provide financial or other assistance. The deadline to apply is July 22.
