ZigBee Overview

ZigBee Alliance Overview

Alliances mission
Enable reliable, cost-effective, low-power, wirelessly networked, monitoring and control products based on an open global standard

Alliances activities
Defining the network, security and application software layers Providing interoperability and conformance testing specifications Promoting the ZigBee brand globally to build market awareness Managing the evolution of the technology

-3

IEEE802.15.4 and ZigBee

For robust low data-rate transmission. Is better for static networks,
thousands of nodes per network (65535 nodes, 65536 networks) small data packets, infrequent packet transfers

Optimises slave battery life

2 years from normal battery.

Integrated highly secure AES encryption Timing optimised for low data & power:
slave acquisition 30msec, sleep-active 15msec, active slave channel access 15msec.

Distance 30m typical Optimised for slaves (Note: 900MHZ BPSK at 40kbps also defined)

ZigBee Alliance Update

ZigBee Update
ZigBee Spec. release to public December 2005 ZigBee Membership now over 175 companies
Many potential customers in there

ZigBee Adopters Members class now available

For OEMs who want to use ZigBee without becoming full members $3,500 annual fee

ZigBee Compliance Testing available

Platform compliance (chip + stack / module) Product certification with logo (end product) (Q2CY2006)
-7

ZigBee Alliance

-8

ZigBee - Represents a Change in How we Will do Monitoring and Control

ZigBee Technology was created by major OEMs for their own use The ZigBee OEM members represent some of the worlds largest field bus technology users
Honeywell, Invensys, Philips, Danfoss, Eaton, Schneider Electric/Legrand, Samsung, Mitsubishi, LG, ABB, Danfoss, Omron, Itron

ZigBee represents a very powerful investment in technology

Hundreds of engineering years and hundreds of millions already invested > $50 billion in market capitalization companies pushing ZigBee
-9

ZigBee Compliance

Need for Compliance and Certification

Necessary to establish what is true ZigBee and what are singlesource, proprietary solutions
Proprietary solutions often using ZigBee standard to create interest and then market their proprietary solutions (Zensys, Ember)
Sometimes confusion is created among potential users Many efforts simply misleading by design

True ZigBee solutions have the benefits of a major worldwide standard

- 11

Regarding the Benefits of the Standard

Any OEM considering a proprietary wireless network solution is placing a bet that that solution will win the predominance of business in their sector or the OEMs product line becomes a non-interoperable island. Furthermore, the OEM is also betting that the proprietary solution will outsell the component volume the standard represents or the OEM will be left at a price disadvantage over standards-based products as well

- 12

Proprietary Low Power Wireless Systems

Appears in many current products Adequate for many applications Low complexity
Or expensive to develop Dont include high end features

Specific to local regulatory regime

902-928MHz USA 868MHz band Europe

Not interoperable

Will never achieve the economies of scale of a widely adopted standard

- 13

What Can be Tested?

ZigBee Compliant Platform
Hardware/software platform IEEE 802.15.4 PHY and MAC ZigBee network functions

End Product ZigBee Certification

e.g. light switch, remote control, thermostat, mobile phone, alarm system Receives ZigBee logo if based on a public profile

Test houses
National Technical Systems of Culver City, California TV Rheinland of N. America of Pleasanton, California
- 14

End Product
Only an end product can have the ZigBee logo
Based on a ZigBee Compliant Platform Uses a public profile

End products based on private profiles may use the ZigBee name
If they are tested and certified ZigBee Friendly and Based on a ZigBee Compliant Platform

Two kinds of profiles

Public
Approved by the ZigBee Alliance

Private

- 15

Stack Profiles
ZigBee currently supports Home Control (HC) Stack profile Commercial stack profile will be created to cover all commercial and industrial application profile Application profiles will be available in future e.g.
Commercial Building Automation Industrial Plant Monitoring HVAC Home Automation Automatic Meter Reading,

Any ZigBee Alliance member can create profiles

- 16

ZigBee Value Proposition Across Vertical Markets

ZigBee has a Variety of Value Propositions

Installation costs Reduced BOM New Green Field apps Alternative network communications Interoperable products Low power, long battery life Full mesh networking technology
