chief executive Truman Bradley said. "The mobile application is proof of a concept for bigger and better things now that F1 has become a recognised Apple iOS developer. The team is 100 per cent local, who are dedicated to developing this new and ever expanding market of Apple mobile phones and products, especially the iPad. "We hope the information we are supplying to overseas visitors is relevant and we shall continue to develop the app and enhance its capabilities. "I personally would like to thank the team at F1 Mobile for the long hours and ever increasing requirements that had to be fulfilled to complete this project. "I would also like to encourage all who have Apple devices to try out the app and give us any feedback on helpdesk@f1.com.fj "F1 Mobile shall also be contacting any interested businesses in the coming future for potential relationships to enhance the product and also advertise what we have to offer in Fiji." Chief operations officer Roneal Ravi Murti, whose timeless effort was given into driving the whole project and getting it to the finish line, was impressed with the team. "It was a difficult and demanding project, especially when it came to keeping the staff on track with deadlines, since they had other on-going projects to work on. "This was our first app and it was a stepping stone since it was difficult, but it was nice to see what our locals can achieve through determination and opportunity given by a company such as F1 Mobile Solutions. "The team did a great job and now we look forward to developing more sophisticated apps in the future." Programmer Joe Romanu and app graphics designer Damien Whippy were responsible for the hard work and extra hours to make this app a successful one. "This was our first app and we took it as a challenge because we are looking to create more intelligent and interactive phone apps, not only for iPhone but for other smart phones," said Mr Romanu. Mr Whippy said: "One of the major difficulties for us was making the app simple. There is so much information that we could have provided but it drastically reduces the attention time that we command from the user. So we decided to use the KISS principle, together with 'Agile' programming methodology. We asked ourselves basic questions that tourists would ask about Fiji. This is how we got the 'Where to Eat, Where to Stay, maps, and About Fiji' menu system. "This app is a good first attempt and we will improve and update in the coming months. I personally feel that if F1 Mobile Solutions didn't think outside the box and allow us to foray into the unknown; we wouldn't have gotten the results that we did. The end result, I feel, is well worth the effort, time and money put in by the company."

First iPhone aPPlication For Fiji

F1 Mobile Solutions has created its first iPhone application which is now on sale at the iTunes application store. The application is known as the "BulaFiji" app and it targets everyone, a statement from the company said. "F1 Mobile Solutions now have their very own iPhone app that tells the world of what we have to offer. BulaFiji was created to promote our beautiful locations for eateries, accommodations with other interesting facts about how and where you could spend your time during a visitor's stay within our beautiful shores. "The 'BulaFiji' iPhone app is a little program that runs on the iPhone supplying information on the whereabouts and details of Fiji. The word "Bula" literally means "life" and can be loosely translated as "Life to you". "This app was developed after some thought was placed into the need to present Fiji further outside the country. Information that would be accessible to everyone, the iPhone app is launched initially to offer the tourism market since tourism is Fiji's biggest money making industry. "The development process occurred over the past two years, as we had to familiarize ourselves with the new iOS development language," the statement said. "F1 Mobile solutions have been working on the development and subsequent deployment of the first-ever iOS mobile application into the Pacific Region," F1 Mobile Solutions

$12m For environment Projects

FIJI stands to benefit from environment projects worth US$7 million (F$12.2 million). This as green groups including the Department of Environment met to discuss Global Environmental Facility Fund (GEF) 5. Director Environment Jope Davetanivalu said out of the funds allocated US$2m was for climate change, $4.5m for bio-diversity and US$0.59m for land degradation. He said the meeting was to prioritize what was to be funded for Fiji. "We are looking at protected areas management and mainstreaming of biodiversity in development process," he said. "Fiji's proposal is to be submitted by the end of the year." Mr Davetanivalu said the funding would benefit Fiji greatly. "This funding means that there will be money to assist in project implementation on climate change mitigation, bio-diversity and land degradation," he said. Mr Davetanivalu said other Pacific island countries had their own allocation.

Fiji President sends conGratUlatory messaGe to oBama

PePPers Brand in Fiji

IT will be a first for Fiji and for the South Pacific as well. The Peppers brand will be in Fiji through the Peppers Naisoso Island Resort and will be the first Peppers property outside of Australia and New Zealand. Part of the Naisoso Island development, which is expected to inject some $400million into the local economy, the resort details were presented to the elite group of Suva last week. Owner and developer Bob Lowres said the resort would deliver personalised services and impressive facilities Peppers is renowned for. The online portal for the resort described it as "the ultimate destination for a romantic getaway, family holiday or special celebration." The 178 room resort will also consist of luxury one, two and three-bedroom apartments. Its recreation facilities include two lagoon swimming pools, tennis courts, day spa, water sports activities, gymnasium and a private beach. "Encapsulating the essence of a tropical paradise, Fiji is where white sandy beaches, swaying coconut trees, pristine oceans and waterways offer a multitude of leisure pursuits that will appeal to the most discerning traveller," the resort's website said. All this for a cool $579,600 for the onebedroom apartment and the rate goes higher for the two and three bedroom units. Tourism minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum was supportive of the project as it was a direct investment into the economy. When the Naisoso development is completed by 2017, it would have contributed about $65m in direct taxes to the Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority. At least 20 per cent of the sales in the Naisoso development have been to locals. If you are one with a deep pocket, this could be an investment venture for you, which in turn would reduce the excess liquidity currently hovering around $0.5billion.

Ninety-seven cleaning service staff of the CWM hospital has been made redundant. This has been confirmed by the Ministry of Health Spokesperson, Peni Namotu who said a new Health Housekeeping Services Co-operative has come on board to provide cleaning services at the CWM. Namotu said while some employers have joined the new housekeeping company, all 97 staff has been given redundancy packages as part of the outsourcing. Government will not be able to solve all of Fijis problems before the 2014 elections says Prime minister commodore voreqe Bainimarama. The Prime Minister says during his visits to the different provinces, there have been issues that have been brought up that have not been dealt with and have been in existence since the past 5 governments. He says if the past 5 governments did not solve these problems then maybe it cannot be solved or the concern is not a priority. Bainimarama says all concerns raised are taken into serious consideration but it will depend on how government has set out its plans. He says if the concerns raised by the people are at the tail of governments plans then it is only right that priorities are dealt with first. Bainimarama says if any concern is not a priority to his government and it is just a want and not a need then his government will not be able to solve it.

Fiji's President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau sent a message of congratulations to US President Barack Obama on their 235th Independence Day Celebration. Nailatikau while speaking at a swearing in ceremony of twenty five Peace Corps volunteers said that he is confident that the friendly relationship that Fiji shares with the United States would continue to prosper and strengthen in the coming years. Meanwhile, the United States Ambassador to Fiji, Steven McGann conducted his final official duty as Ambassador in the administration of oath to the new peace corp. volunteers.

loose oil to ProdUce PoWer

An electricity company from New Zealand plans to set up a branch in Fiji. This was confirmed by Laisa Raratabu the director Land Use Unit (LUU). She says the company plans to produce electricity from loose oil available in Fiji. A 50 acre land lease has been given to them for the electricity plant at Veisari, near to the site of the new cement factory, Ms Raratabu said. The company will make electricity out loose oil from around the country. She said the company would sell their electricity to the Fiji Electricity Authority (FEA). They had already signed an agreement with the Fiji Electricity Authority to sell electricity to them by March next year. Failing to do so, FEA will penalize them and this is part of their agreement already signed, she said. Ms Raratabu said the company would provide employment to locals. She said the request for land from foreign investors had increased dramatically and this was a positive sign to Government. Ms Raratabu said many i-taukei landowning units wanted their land looked after by the unit because of the commercial benefits. Once the land is designated to them and deposited into the Land Bank and leased out the benefits will be as follows: 1. Rentals will be higher on 10 per cent of the UCV compared to the current 6 per cent of the UCV. 2. Full rentals will be paid to the land owning units (LOUs) unlike the current NLTB distribution formula. 3. Rentals will be paid to LOUs on time. 4. Opportunity for native landowners to also access to more developed areas with roads, water, electricity, etc. 5. Lands are surveyed. For tenants and investors, the benefits are as follows: 1. More secure tenancies because: 2. State will be the landlord 3. Leases will be on longer terms 4. Speedy delivery of services (more customers oriented), including 5. Registration of leases 6. Zoning, etc 7. Leases will be tailor-made, readily available, etc.

Yaqona vendor Tom Valentine prepares for sales at Labasa Market

decrease in yaqona sUPPly

YAQONA vendors in Labasa are anticipating an increase in sales during the cane harvesting season. But they fear a decrease in supply because of an anticipated high demand during the cane harvesting season. Tom Valentine, a vendor, said the supply was sufficient but a shortage could be experienced in a few months. "The supply is enough but we aren't predicting high supply during the harvesting season even though the demand will be high," Mr Valentine said. He said rain had affected farms. "The price of yaqona per kilo has already increased by about 20 per cent. The price now stands about $40-$30," Mr Valentine said. "We are looking forward to high sales during the cane harvesting period because grog will be a popular drink for gatherings after a hard day's work," he said. Mr Valentine brings in about 15 kilograms of waka and 25 kilograms of lewena from his Qamea farm every fortnight. Another yaqona farmer and vendor Sefanaia Sau of Nakobo Village in Cakaudrove sells about 20 kilograms in a fortnight. "The demand for yaqona is increasing and very soon we might experience a shortage," Mr Sau said. "People haven't recovered completely from the last cyclone and the rainy weather has further affected farming. Price has already increased and consumers can expect another slight increase in the next few weeks," he said.

cancer society raises $251,661

THE Fiji Cancer Society has collected $251,661 since 2006. Society president Nirmala Nambiar said with the event running in its sixth year, they managed to raise approximately $50,000 each year. "Bushells Fiji's biggest morning tea is a wonderful way to not only raise funds, awareness and offer support to the overall cause of cancer but also a great chance for people to come together and chat about a topic that can be so difficult for people to discuss," she said. "To share stories and challenges that they have faced whether directly or indirectly due to cancer and to realise that they are not alone. Unfortunately, most people have been affected by some form of cancer directly or through people we love." Ms Nambiar said the biggest morning tea was launched with the hope to raise funds to build a cancer hospice in Fiji. A hospice, she said, was a specialised facility that demanded the provision of specialised professional services on 24/7 basis. She said the resource was not available within the society. "The society decided to withdraw from the hospice project in liaison with the Ministry of Health and withdraw from the provision of the MOU requiring the society to construct and operate a hospice at Ward 4 Tamavua Rehabilitation Hospital," Ms Nambiar said. "To enable the society to make a rational and informed decision the society sought the relevant professional advice."

halF oF christchUrch Wants to leave: Poll
a Poll of christchurch residents has revealed half plan to leave new Zealand's shaky city, or would if they could afford to. The findings of an online news poll have delivered more bad news on Christchurch's dwindling population in the wake of three major earthquakes. The South Island city was hit by a damaging 7.1-magnitude quake last September, followed by the devastating shallow 6.3-magnitude jolt on February 22, which killed 181 people and felled most of the picturesque CBD. A violent aftershock of the same magnitude last month killed one man and dredged up silt for a third time, leaving many strung-out residents in disbelief. Exit figures released last month showed a record 3000 Christchurch people emigrated to Australia and other overseas destinations between February and May to escape the instability. An unscientific poll of 40,000 residents by the local Press newspaper has found that 21 per cent of respondents are planning to leave, while another 26 per cent would if it wasn't for their properties or jobs. About 13 per cent said they didn't know what to do. Just 36 per cent were adamant they didn't want to go. The city's charismatic mayor Bob Parker has said he's not concerned about an exodus, arguing that "the vast majority of people in this city love it". "We know we will get through this stage. We will rebuild our communities. Some may not be in the same places though," he said after the latest major aftershock. Families that plan to leave are reportedly facing a backlash from fellow residents angry they have "given up" on the city. "Goodbye and don't bother coming back when things come right," one commented on the Press article. "We don't need the likes of you who run when things get tough."

mUslim Woman ordered oFF nZ BUs For WearinG veil

new Zealand's prime minister called for tolerance following a public outcry when a bus driver refused to allow a muslim woman to get on board because she was wearing a veil. The student from Saudi Arabia, Gawheer Saud Al Thaubity, was left standing on the street in tears after she was ordered off a crowded bus because the driver objected to her covered face, national television network TV3 reported. The incident, in May, came just two days after another driver from the same company, NZ Bus, ordered another woman to remove her veil. The incidents prompted the ConsulateGeneral of Saudi Arabia to write to the government to complain, as reported and led to Prime Minister John Key defending the women's right to cover their faces, saying it was "part of people's beliefs." "I think where practical, and on both sides, people should respect others' culture and cultural beliefs. There are practical reasons why sometimes a burqa won't be applicable; banks for example for security reasons from time to time they will enforce that," Mr Key said. ''But for the most part we are a multicultural society and we should respect others' cultural beliefs.'' NZ Bus said the drivers' objections to the veiled women were not religious in nature and that they suffered from "maskophobia." ''Both drivers ... claim it's not religious ... but they genuinely have a phobia of people wearing masks, hence why we have not dismissed them,'' general manager Jon Calder said. Mr Calder added that the drivers were being counseled and had received final warnings. According to the New Zealand newspaper, one driver had finished the counseling program, and had visited a mosque and apologised to one of the women. The community debate about veils in New Zealand comes in the wake of a new law announced in neighbouring Australia which will give New South Wales police the right to order women to remove their burqas. Police are to be given the power to force anyone to remove a face covering during routine traffic stops, if suspected of committing a crime or if they are considered a potential security risk. If a woman defies police and refuses to remove her veil she could be jailed for up to a year or fined $5,500. The penalties are some of the world's toughest burqa rules. In France, where burqas are completely banned in public, women face fines of $150.

$6 toll to cross aUcKland harBoUr BridGe

Transport Agency consultants believe tolls of $6 to $8 could pay for a new Auckland harbour crossing. The tolls would be charged on the new crossing and the existing harbour bridge. The figures are in a report which the Auckland Council has circulated to local boards on options for building and paying for a $5.1 billion pair of motorway tunnels, or a new bridge for up to $3.9 billion. Preliminary investigations suggest a new bridge could be fully paid for with a toll of $6 each way to use it and the existing bridge, and an $8 toll would be needed to pay for the tunnels. The agency believes a new crossing will be within 20 years as the existing bridge's clip-on lanes start wearing out. The consultants say the national land transport fund could not pay for it alone. But traffic forecasts showed harbour crossings were likely to halve by 2041 with a $6 toll and drop to 40 per cent with an $8 toll. An Automobile Association poll published last month showed 47.5 per cent of its Auckland members would be prepared to pay a $4 toll to use a new harbour crossing, but only 8.2 per cent would pay $6. The Government and the Transport Agency say they are a long way from making decisions about funding options. A spokesman for Transport Minister Steven Joyce said the new crossing would be an expensive project, demanding a combination of funding sources, "but it's too early to say what those will be". In its infrastructure investment plan, the Government says it is likely to look at user charges such as road tolls to help pay for projects. The Kaipatiki Local Board, covering a large area including Glenfield and Birkenhead, has passed a resolution opposing any tolls on the existing 52-year-old bridge. Board member Vivienne Keohane said that the toll suggestions were "absolutely outrageous". "A lot of people wouldn't be able to travel to work imagine paying $60 to $80 a week out of your wages." Mrs Keohane said North Shore residents such as herself, who had lived in Glenfield since 1968, had paid for the bridge during its first 25 years, and would not accept a new toll. A bridge toll of 25c was abolished in 1984, four years after a rise from 20c imposed by the Prime Minister Robert Muldoon's National government was blamed for party candidate Don Brash losing a by-election for East Coast Bays.

They were the people who first explored and settled the Pacific islands, sailing initially beyond the big islands of the Solomons out through Vanuatu, New Caledonia, to Fiji, Tonga and Samoa. The Samoan capital, Apia has just hosted a major Lapita Pacific Archaeological meeting, bringing together international and regional experts. The first people arrived and settled in the Pacific between 1200BC and 1000BC, moving from Melanesia to the Western Pacific including Polynesia, to countries like Tonga and Samoa. Janet Davidson, a New Zealand archaeologist who attended the conference , told the reporter that the most exciting thing for her was that the whole conference was run by the Institute or Samoan Studies. Independent Samoa also now has a course where undergraduate students can study archaeology two years, hopefully to be extended to three years. Mr Davidson said it was important for Pacific Islanders to know more about their past in terms of archaeology because "people have thought that their own

Former Tongan Prime Minister Fred Sevele has denied allegations of corruption in connection with the Nukualofa Redevelopment Fund. Melino Maka was one of the authors of a government commissioned report into the Nukualofa fund. Mr Maka says he and his business partner were sacked for not coming up with the answers the government wanted about the money missing from the fund. He claimed to have been told that the former Prime Minister, Fred Sevele, might have been involved. Dr Sevele rejects the charge, telling the reporter that the funds to rebuild Nukualofa in the wake of rioting and looting in 2006 have been handled professionally and transparently. "Archaeologists everywhere else in the world are interested in how people settled the Pacific and how they develop their distinctive modern cultures and this parallels the traditions and stories that the people themselves have always had."

THE Tonga Broadcasting Commission celebrated its 50 Years Golden Jubilee in Nuku'alofa from July 1-4, with a groundbreaking ceremony for the installment of a new national AM Medium Wave Transmission Mast at Popua to replace a 50 year old mast operating since the inception of the service in 1961. TBC Chief Engineer Solomone Finau said on July 1 that the new transmission mast is an important milestone since it would technically improve their AM radio service to all of the outer islands, including the two Niuas. The $1.4 million project funded by the Korean Broadcasting Cooperation would fix major problems TBC experiences with their AM service where some areas such as the Nius and other outer islands could not receive the service. This new mast is expected to be in service in November this year would enable the AM station to reach everyone in Tonga.

Tonga rugby coach Isitolo Maka says his team will not become over-confident after beating hosts Fiji in their game for the International Rugby Board Pacific Nations Cup. Tonga and Samoa emerged the winners of the first round of the four-nation event, in games held in Fiji and Japan. Maka says the 45-21 score did not reflect the closeness of the game, and says his team still has a lot of work to do. Meanwhile, reigning title-holders Samoa defeated Japan in Tokyo 34-15, and go on to face the Tongans next week in round two. Fiji takes on Japan. Both matches will be held in Suva.

mUmBai Police Fine 31 For 'dirty dancinG'
thirty-one young people have been fined for "indecent" dancing in india's entertainment capital, mumbai. Senior officer Mahesh Patil told the newspaper that the individuals were fined 1200 rupees ($24) each after a raid on a nightclub in the northern suburb of Malad last Saturday night. "Ten of the 31 offenders were girls. They were dancing vulgarly in the converted disco, which is considered to be a public place," he was quoted as saying, without elaborating. The raid, in which 77 people including diners were detained altogether, was initially for playing music without a licence, but police decided to act after finding the dancing "objectionable", the daily added. News of the raid quickly led to a protest group, Stop Moral Policing in Mumbai, being set up on the social networking site Facebook, calling for the police, certain political parties and individuals to "stop defining indecency". As well as the Malad incident, it cited the reported arrests of young people holding hands in a western Mumbai suburb in 2007. The incident comes after the state government of Maharashtra, of which Mumbai is the capital, raised the minimum age for buying and consuming beer from 18 to 21 and spirits from 21 to 25 to combat problem drinking. The move sparked outrage among young people, who are the mainstay of Mumbai's vibrant nightlife, which is already curtailed by early closing times. The state has previously tried to close dance bars where female performers dance to Bollywood tunes branding them dens of iniquity and fronts for prostitution and the criminal underworld. But the order was overturned, with a court stating that it violated sections of the Indian constitution guaranteeing "fundamental rights of livelihood".

UGandan school FoUnd UsinG BomB as Bell

A mine awareness team in Uganda was horrified to find an unexploded bomb being used as a bell when they visited a school to teach children how to spot bombs, a local newspaper reported. The Anti-Mine Network organisation saw teachers banging the bomb with stones to call children to lessons in a 700-pupil school in a rural area, the reporter said. "Its head was still active, which means that if it is hit by a stronger force, it would explode instantly and cause untold destruction in the area," Wilson Bwambale, coordinator of the organisation, told the newspaper. Mr Bwambale said they would explode it in a cordoned-off area. The Ugandan military has fought two rebel insurgencies over the last two decades and mines and bombs still litter former battlefields around the country. This is the second bomb that the Anti-Mine Network has found in a Ugandan school in the last six months. Another was found being used by children at lunchtime as a toy and put away in a storeroom during lessons. The Transportation Security Administration government has warned airlines that terrorists are considering surgically implanting explosives in people to circumvent screening procedures, U.S. officials told the media. While there is no indication of an immediate plot, the information could lead to additional screening procedures at U.S. airports. Existing scanners cannot detect certain explosive materials under the skin. Explosive trace detection swabs can detect bombs under the skin, but they're conducted on only a fraction of passengers, experts said. TSA spokesman Nicholas Kimball said that passengers flying into the United States are likely to face additional screening measures, such as interaction with passengers, pat-downs and the use of enhanced tools and technologies.

An elderly man in the United States has been arrested for murdering a young girl more than 50 years ago. In a case that gripped America, sevenyear-old Maria Ridulph disappeared while playing near her home in Illinois in 1957 and her remains were found a few months later. Her neighbour Jack McCullough was a suspect at the time, but he told police he had been on a train at the time of her disappearance. But 54 years later, his ex-girlfriend found the train ticket from the day of the murder, and it was unused and unstamped. McCullough, who is now 71, was tracked down by police to a retirement village in Seattle, where he was living under an assumed name. Kathy Chapman, who was the last person to see Maria Ridulph before she was kidnapped, says she is happy an arrest has finally been made. "It's a relief. It's a relief to know that you have this person that took her," she said. "I mean, he did wrong. He took away a friend of mine and I'm not unhappy to have it come to a closure."

105 -pound woman takes first female title at hot dog -eating contest
There were a lot of firsts but no bests at the 2011 Hot Dog Eating Contest on Coney Island in New York on Monday, where two dozen competitors stuffed themselves with a few hundred hotdogs in 10 minutes. This year for the first time, China sent three hungry men to the 94th annual Fourth of July pig-out, sponsored by Nathans Famous hot dogs and Major League Eating, the promoters. Sonya The Black Widow Thomas, weighing in at 105 pounds, jawed through 40 dogs and buns in 10 minutes, claiming the first womens division title and the first pink Pepto Bismol belt. She was a couple of meals ahead of second-place Juliet Lees 29.5.

Billions in treasure found in temples secret vaults

A fierce debate is brewing about what to do with billions of dollars worth of treasures in a popular 16th-century Hindu temple in southern India, even as the trove of newly revealed riches was growing. Inside the Shree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, investigators were counting the staggering hoard of gold coins and statues of gods and goddesses studded with diamonds and other precious stones. Outside, small groups of armed policemen patrolled the temple grounds in the heart of the Kerala state capital, Trivandrum. Metal detectors were hurriedly installed at temple entrances after six days of searches revealed a treasure trove of artifacts, statues and temple ornaments made of gold and embellished with jewels. The valuables were donated to the temple by devotees over hundreds of years, and Indias royal family has been the custodian of the treasures. The secret vaults were opened and the treasures inventoried after a lawyer went to court with doubts about temple security. Five vaults have been opened so far, and a sixth was to be inventoried. The unforeseen riches instantly turned the temple into one of Indias wealthiest religious institutions and have sparked a debate on what to do with the treasure. An initial estimate, when the inventory began, put the trove value at $22 billion. But given that the work is ongoing and so many items are centuries-old antiques, that estimate is likely very low. Politicians, religious leaders and historians have made a host of suggestions. Keralas top elected leader, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, said the wealth would remain with the temple and the state government would assure its safety. The treasures are the property of the temple. We will ensure the utmost security for the temple and its wealth, Chandy told reporters Tuesday. Many others in the state feel the enormous stash should be used to pay for poverty alleviation.

The wealth should be used in public interest, said V.R. Krishna Iyer, a retired Supreme Court judge. The treasure should be handed over to a national trust and spent for the welfare of the poor. Others oppose any move that will give the government control over the billions. There is an opinion that it should be handed over to the government for developmental purposes. I am aghast at this suggestion, said Prof. K.N. Panikkar, a renowned historian, who also hails from Kerala. Panikkar said the treasures were Keralas legacy and should be preserved in a museum. Many of the objects may have antique value while others may have religious importance, he told reporters. These should be preserved in a museum with modern security arrangements. Kerala is a relatively prosperous region, which gained international acclaim as the first state in India to obtain 100 percent literacy. But it lags in industrial growth, forcing hundreds of thousands of its educated youth to go abroad in search of employment. The Supreme Court ordered the inspection of the vaults at the temple, which is controlled by the royal family of the former kingdom of Travancore, after a lawyer petitioned for the state government to take over the temple, citing inadequate security. On Wednesday, Indias top court Wednesday ordered that a curator be appointed to protect and preserve the vast treasures, and directed that the entire trove

be photographed and filmed. The Supreme Court is expected give its orders on forcing open the remaining vault on Friday as its steel-framed doors will have to be cut open. The royal family had petitioned the court against the inspection but hasnt commented on the revelations since the vaults were opened.

arrest after suspected honour killing

police in india arrested a man suspected of killing his 20-year-old daughter in an apparent honour killing after she walked out on an arranged marriage with a man 25 years her senior. The young woman named Mukesh had apparently fled her husbands home in the north Indian state of Haryana and refused to return to him, said Nirpijit Singh, deputy superintendent of police in Kaithal district. A post-mortem on the victims body showed signs of strangulation, he said, adding that the father and an uncle were taken into police custody afterwards. Mukesh was married off two months ago as part of an exchange deal between her and her husbands family, he explained. Her uncle Inder was meant to marry a girl from her husbands family, but when she ran away from her husbands home, all that fell apart, so they killed her, he said. Marriage deals involving the exchange of women are commonplace among the conservative Jat community, a caste of farmers from north India to which Mukesh belonged, Singh added. So-called honour killings are common in India and normally involve young people who break strict social and caste conventions governing marriage and are then murdered by relatives to restore a familys pride. Indias Supreme Court said in May that the death penalty should be given to those found guilty of so-called honour killings, calling the crime a barbaric slur on the nation. There are no official figures on honour killings, though an independent study last year suggested that as many as 900 were being committed every year in the northern states of Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. Many go unreported, with police and local politicians turning a blind eye to what some see as an acceptable form of traditional justice.

two out of three americans say country no longer a superpower

two out of three americans taking part in a poll do not believe that the united states is the sole remaining superpower in the world. The poll, released by Time magazine and the Aspen Institute, also indicates that Americans want their leaders to focus more on domestic challenges and less on foreign issues, The Christian Science Monitor reports. Over two-thirds of Americans consider the last ten years to have been a decade of decline for America. Three quarter of American people say economic weakness poses a greater danger than national security threats, the report said. In May, a Pew Research Center poll found that majorities in every partisan group of the population including, for the first time in the decade of 9/11, conservative Republicans agreed with the statement that the US should pay less attention to problems overseas and concentrate on problems here at home. Last month, President Obama declared, in announcing his plans for a troop drawdown in Afghanistan said, America, it is time to focus on national-building here at home.

harrods sale girl quits joB after she was forced to wear make-up
a sale assistant in uk has claimed that she was hounded out of her job at harrods because she refused to wear make-up. Melanie Stark who worked for five years at the Knightsbridge department store resigned after she was twice sent home for refusing to comply with its strict dress code. She said that she was even offered a cosmetics workshop and was told: You can see what you look like with makeup. I was appalled. It was insulting. Basically, it was implying it would be an improvement. I dont understand how they think it is OK to say that, the reporter quoted her as saying. I know what I look like with make-up. I have used it, though never at work. But I just could not see how, in this day and age, Harrods could take away my right to choose to wear it or not, she added. A copy of a 13-page dress code was handed to Stark when she joined the HMV department in Harrods at the age of 19. She said that she complied with all other aspects of the dress code and Harrods did not seek to enforce the make-up regulations until last August when senior managers sent her home after a floor walk. On another occasion, she was made to work in a stockroom where customers could not see her. She also claimed that she was summoned to a meeting with her floor manager and was asked to wear make-up or you leave. Stark was briefly transferred to HMVs store in Bayswater, West London, while a resolution was sought, but she had already decided to resign.

sarah fergusons children book the little pear tree which is about 9/11, has been rejected in the usa as being too offensive to print. The Duchess of York, 51, sent out an outline of the 32-page of the children book, which is about a tree that survived the 2001 terror attacks, the media reported. sexsomniac cleared of teenage rape

a British jury has found a man not guilty of raping a teenage girl, accepting his defence that he suffers from sexsomnia the ability to have sex while asleep. Stephen Davies, 43, a painter and decorator from Wales, was charged with raping a 16-year-old who was staying at his home in 2009, but maintained he had no recollection of being intimate with the girl. Davies ex-wife was among a string of witnesses to give evidence in support of the accusers slumberous sexual impulses. I would wake up in the early hours because his hands were all over me and he wanted sex, Angela Heather Davies told a jury during her former partners trial. Sometimes I would push him away and sometimes we would have sex. In either case he would not remember in the morning. Founder of the British Sleep Society Chris Idzikowski told the jury that sexsomnia was an instinctive behaviour and often goes unreported. It affects mainly men who are deep sleepers, Dr Idzikowski said of sexsomnia. It can involve almost any sort of sexual activity and could go on for 20 or 30 minutes. It is extremely unlikely they will have any memory because amnesia is associated with the condition. Evidence presented in Davies trial included that the day after the alleged rape; he sent the girl a text message asking if they had been intimate. A jury returned a unanimous not guilty verdict.

snorer tom cruise snoozes in snoratorium so wife katie can sleep well
hollywood is witnessing a new trend of setting up snoratoriums in the homes to enable spouses of snorers to get a good night sleep. Following suit, 49-year-old snorer Tom Cruise has converted one of his guest bedrooms into a sound proof refuge, so that wife Katie Holmes can get a sound sleep. The snoratorium in Cruises 20 million pounds Hollywood home is towards the back of the property, close to the bedroom he normally shares with wife Holmes, 32 and their five-year-old daughter Suri. Whoever uses the snoring room cannot be heard outside the locked door. Its very small, comfortable and dark, maybe a former nursery, the Daily Mail quoted a visitor as saying. It was reported that shortly after their marriage; Holmes stopped sleeping in the same room as Cruise because of his snoring. Snoratoriums are proving popular among ageing action heroes who are now in or reaching their 40s. Henceforth, rather than be relegated to the sofa, celebrities are creating padded and atmospherically controlled rooms where they can snore away undisturbed.

British call centre to return home from costly mumBai

a British call centre operating from mumbai has decided to pack up and return home, after finding the indian business capital just too expensive to carry on its business there. New Call Telecom, which competes with BT and Sky to offer home telephone services, broadband and low-cost international calls, is opening a call centre in Lancashire after being attracted by low commercial rents and cheap labour costs. Last week, a market town in the Burnley borough of Lancashire County, hit the headlines as home to the cheapest house in Britain. A two-bedroom terrace property, described as being in need of comprehensive repair and renovation, was sold for 10,000 pounds ($16,126). It is rock-bottom property prices such as this and high unemployment that attracted New Calls chief executive Nigel Eastwood to the town. New Call will pay four pounds a square foot for a space in Burnley, which Eastwood says is similar to that in Mumbai and New Delhi. We did a cost and service analysis of returning home and there was an absolute parity between what we are paying for a third-party call centre in India and here in the UK, says Eastwood. In India in the past decade, as call centres have grown, real-estate prices have gone up massively, while salaries have also crept up. He says: Salaries in India arent that cheap any more. Add to that the costs of us flying out there, hotels and software, and the costs are at an absolute parity. In the UK, we will pay workers the minimum wage. Given the current economic environment, we will get good sticky employees who will also receive bonuses linked to performance. Also, the use of foreign call centres has proved unpopular with many customers, who say they prefer to deal with British staff.

ex-washington loBByist designs white shirt to cover womens cleavage

a washington lobbyist-turned-designer has created a white shirt that covers busty womens cleavages and save them from falling prey to mens ogling eyes. Rochelle Behrens, who describes herself as buxom, found that every white shirt she bought tended to gape open during meetings, making her the butt of all jokes. The one item in a womans wardrobe that is supposed to project professionalism ends up undermining your credibility, the media quoted her as saying. I wanted it to be youthful, to be fresh. I wanted it to look like myself. I wanted to wear things that were not form-fitting but that were tailored, she added. The 28-year-old got so frustrated with the ill-fitting corporate shirts that she set out making a shirt that would solve her problem and that of all women like her. Despite having no experience in fashion designing, Behrens began spending all her free time working on a design and aligning the buttons so they allowed just enough of her cleavage to show, but not too much. She found a pattern maker in New York who worked with Diane Von Furstenberg, tracked down a manufacturer in Spain and now her shirt is on sale. The Shirt can be purchased via theshirt.com along with Bloomingdales and boutiques and is available in four options, costing between $88$94. It also includes the classic model and one with tie in a bow around the neck to ensure no man can even get a peek.

A short Hindu wedding ceremony

Traditional Hindu wedding ceremonies can last for days and involve much ritual in Sanskrit which may be understood only by the priest conducting the service. This ceremony is considerably shorter and is intended to be understandable even to a non-Indian audience, making it suitable for intercultural or mixed Hindu/non-Hindu marriages. The priest in this ceremony need not be formally trained as a Hindu priest. He or she should be familiar with Hindu weddings and comfortable acting as a master of ceremonies, guiding the participants through their parts and explaining the meaning of the service to

the audience. It's okay if the priest keeps the script in hand during the ceremony. roles Bride

canadas nudity laws challenged in ontario

Should it be illegal to go through a drivethru stark naked? Brian Coldin doesnt think so. This week, his lawyers plan to argue that public nudity shouldnt be a criminal offence at all. Coldin is a longtime naturist who runs a clothing-optional resort near the town of Bracebridge, in Ontarios picturesque Muskoka region. Hes faced a number of charges over the years, and was the subject of a 2005 documentary from CTVs W5, called A Town Without Pity. He was charged with public nudity two years ago, after driving through an A&W naked with three others and placing an order. The trial has dragged on for months, but this week, Coldins lawyers plan to argue that the nudity laws under which he was charged are too broad and are therefore unconstitutional. Coldin is charged under Section 174 of the Criminal Code, which says it is illegal to be nude in a public place, or while exposed to the public while in a private place. His lawyers say the laws are so broad that one could be charged just by being seen naked while in ones own home. Nader Hasan, one of Coldins lawyers, says laws should exist to protect us from harm, not to protect the sensibilities of the most prudish among us, he remarked in an interview. These laws violate freedom of expression and they are overbroad such as to punish all kinds of conduct that is completely harmless and shouldnt be criminal. He notes that if the nudity provisions of the Criminal Code are struck down, there would still be public indecency laws on the books, so acts like flashing or public masturbation would still be illegal, since they are covered under separate provisions. Hasan says if the nudity laws are overturned, it would no longer be a crime to be nude while sunbathing or changing at the beach. The arguments about the constitutionality of Canadas nudity laws come at the end of Coldins trial for incidents that took place in May 2009. The judge will rule on whether Coldin is guilty of the charges hes facing and on the constitutionality of the nudity laws at the same time. Since witnesses were called during the actual trial who spoke about Canadas nudity laws, there will only be statements by lawyers.

uBc student Blinded in Bangladesh

A UBC student who lost her vision in a vicious attack during a trip home to Bangladesh is back home. Rumana Monzur was attacked last month, when her eyes were gouged and her face disfigured in an assault that may have left her permanently blind. University president Stephen Toope has said Indian doctors concluded Monzurs eye injuries were too severe to be treated, although specialists with the schools ophthalmology department will assess her again. The 33-year-old woman is a Fulbright scholar and graduate student in political science and UBC has launched a fundraising campaign to cover her medical costs and help her continue her studies. Monzurs husband, Hasan Sayeed Sumon, is in jail in Bangladesh facing charges of attempted murder. The case has prompted rallies and petitions in Bangladesh, where roughly half of all women are believed to be victims of domestic violence.

Manitobans drank their way to No. 1 again. Convenience store king 7-Eleven has crowned Manitoba the Slurpee Capital of the World, for the 12th year in a row. Corporate bosses at Slurpees 7-11 head office presented a Slurpee trophy cup to Winnipegs Mayor Sam Katz in 2009, to mark the 10th year the province took the title. Theres no fanfare this year, although a corporate spokeswoman praised Winnipeg and Manitoba for their love affair with the frosty, sugary beverage. On July 11, the convenience store chain will be giving away free small Slurpees for fans across Canada 1,000 small Slurpees per store. The giveaway marks the 42nd anniversary of the introduction of the Slurpee to Canada.

mother allegedly leaves BaBy in scorching car

With temperatures outside hovering around 30C, a St. Albert woman allegedly left her four-month-old daughter in the car while shopping in Kelowna, prompting police to smash the window. Cops were called to a Kelowna department store about 1 p.m. Monday after witnesses saw the child in the back seat of a Toyota sedan. The windows were open just a crack, said RCMP Const. Steve Holmes, making the temperature inside the car stifling. Locked doors prevented police from freeing the child so a window was smashed and when rescuers retrieved the baby, it was sweating. The infant girl was taken to hospital by ambulance while police found her 22-yearold-mother. The B.C. Ministry of Children and Family Development is now involved, said Holmes, and the mother could face charges of child abandonment. This is a good reminder for parents that they need to be diligent and under no circumstances, for any amount of time, should ever leave a child alone in a car, especially during hot weather its a mistake that could be regretted for life, said Minister Mary McNeil. Due to privacy laws, I cannot comment on specifics of this case however I can tell you that the ministry takes these situations very seriously and is currently gathering details and cooperating with police. Its not uncommon for parents to leave their kids in the car while running errands, said Holmes. Everyone says they were only going in for a minute, but they dont understand you dont go into a store for just a minute if youre going to buy something, it always turns out to be longer than you expect, he said. (The mother) understood, youve got an ambulance there, Ministry of Children and Families, the police are there ... she admitted obviously it was not the right decision to make. Im sure shes one person whos never going to make that mistake again. Holmes said the mother is in the process of moving from St. Albert to Kelowna and has family in the area.

Sometimes it just seems easier to go out, but our homes provide a relaxing and intimate atmosphere for hosting friends and family. However, that doesnt mean you have to settle for the same old entertaining ideas or spend more time on the preparation, cooking and clean-up than you do with your guests. Looking for something new? Here are some ideas to try for your next gathering: board games or some cards will work for groups of four to six, but youll need more seating and a plan for larger groups. For instance, how will players partner and rotate? How will you keep score and determine when games end? To prompt some competition, have prizes for the end of the night including a gag gift for the person who comes in last. The prep work doesnt have to be expensive or time consuming. Think veggies and dip, fruit platters, savoury appetizers and signature dessert to serve at the end of the evening. Soda pop, club soda and blended drinks help keep the alcohol quotient low too. movie night or tv marathon Few entertaining ideas let you do your comfortable clothes and put your feet up. So keep yourself hydrated by leaving a glass of ice water next to you all day, and continually sipping from it. eat hot peppers to rev your metabolism

Youve heard the statistics: Most people, who diet, regain the weight they lost, and then some, when they end their diets. Well, youre not a statistic and you can avoid becoming one if you spend 30 minutes, four days a week, cycling, walking, or water jogging during and after your diet. Thats because the low-intensity exercise can prevent the decrease in metabolism and fat burning that often occurs during and after a diet.

watermelon, apart from being rich in nutrients, has been found to lower prehypertension, a precursor to cardio diseases. Extracts of watermelon, given daily for six weeks, lowered blood pressure in a group of pre-hypertensive men and women aged between 51 and 57 years. Watermelon is the richest edible natural source of L-citrulline, which is closely related to L-arginine, the amino acid required for the formation of nitric oxide essential to regulate blood pressure. slave lake fires canadas 2nd costliest disaster
Insured damages from the Slave Lake, Alta., fires have hit $700 million so far, making it the second costliest disaster in Canadian history, the Insurance Bureau of Canada said Tuesday. Wildfires ripped through the community 280 kilometers north of Edmonton on May 15, destroying one-third of the town. Only the ice storm that hit Quebec and Ontario in 1998 caused more damage $1.8 billion. Several thousand claims have been filed so far for homes, cars and businesses that were damaged in Slave Lake. The scale of the destruction to homes and property is incredible, said Doug Noble, Insurance Bureau of Canada vice-president for Alberta and the North, in a news release. Its devastating for those who have been affected. Prince William and his wife Kate visited Slave Lake on Wednesday and met with firefighters and people who lost their homes in the fires.

Canada Post expects the remaining backlog of letter mail to be cleared by the end of next week and has offered up overtime options to most of its workforce to help get back to par. The Crown Corporation is behind by about 40 million pieces of letter mail, but has stepped up production at its facilities to clear the backlog as quickly as possible. Canada Post spokeswoman Anick Losier said this time of year; about 18 million pieces of letter mail are sorted and distributed each day. To clear the delays left by the recent labour dispute, however, about 27 million pieces are now circulated daily, she said. What we can say confidently is that the backlog in letters will be taken care of by the end of next week, Losier said, adding that once the letter mail surplus is taken care of, regular standards for delivery time can then be the focus. The Crown Corporation, which had been offering overtime for staff at its processing plants and depots, on Tuesday started making voluntary overtime available for its mail carriers. Losier said Wednesday that about 70 per cent of letter carriers have signed up to work an additional hour at the start of their shift to work toward clearing the backlog.

Child Abuse and Neglect

Recognizing and Preventing Child Abuse
CONTINUED FROM LAST WEEK

EFFECTS oF CHiLD ABUSE AND NEgLECT Abused children cannot express emotions safely. As a result, the emotions get stuffed down, coming out in unexpected ways. Adult survivors of child abuse can struggle with unexplained anxiety, depression or anger. They may turn to alcohol or drugs to numb out the painful feelings. TyPES oF CHiLD ABUSE There are several types of child abuse, but the core element that ties them together is the emotional effect on the child. Children need predictability, structure, clear boundaries and the knowledge that their parents are looking out for their safety. Abused children cannot predict how their parents will act. Their world is an unpredictable and a frightening place with no rules. Whether the abuse is a slap, a harsh comment, stony silence or not knowing if there will be dinner on the table tonight, the end result is a child that feel unsafe, uncared for and alone. Emotional child abuse

it be adequate food, clothing, hygiene, or supervision. Child neglect is not always easy to spot. Sometimes, a parent might become physically or mentally unable to care for a child, such as with a serious injury, untreated depression or anxiety. Other times, alcohol or drug abuse may seriously impair judgment and the ability to keep a child safe. Older children might not show outward signs of neglect, becoming used to presenting a competent face to the outside world and even taking on the role of the parent. But at the end of the day, neglected children are not getting their physical and emotional needs met. Physical child abuse

Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me? Contrary to this old saying, emotional abuse can severely damage a childs mental health or social development, leaving lifelong psychological scars. Examples of emotional child abuse include: humiliating a child comparisons to others worthless, bad, or a mistake. punishment, giving him or her the silent treatment. no hugs, kisses, or other signs of affection. abuse of others, whether it be the abuse of a parent, a sibling or even a pet. Child neglect Child neglect a very common type of child abuse is a pattern of failing to provide for a childs basic needs, whether

Physical abuse involves physical harm or injury to the child. It may be the result of a deliberate attempt to hurt the child but not always. It can also result from severe discipline, such as using a belt on a child or physical punishment that is inappropriate to the childs age or physical condition. Many physically abusive parents and caregivers insist that their actions are simply forms of disciplineways to make children learn to behave. But there is a big difference between using physical punishment to discipline and physical abuse. The point of disciplining children is to teach them right from wrong, not to make them live in fear. In physical abuse, unlike physical forms of discipline the following elements are present: The child never knows what is going to set the parent off. There are no clear boundaries or rules. The child is constantly walking on eggshells, never sure what behavior will trigger a physical assault.

Furthermore, it is illegal to sell, give away or distribute items that do not meet the requirements of the Hazardous Products Act. What does this mean if you want to sell an item? You need to make sure that what youre selling is in legal and in good condition or you could be held liable in a civil court of law. Unfortunately, not everyone is aware of the laws and regulations so there is no guarantee that items are safe simply because they are available. guru Puja Guru means elder or big and Puja stands for praying, please give respect. In India guru Puja is a big Festival for all institutions which are connected with culture. Mythological importance of guru Puja Guru or the teacher is the most important person in any ones life. On earth Guru is the real God whom we can see, that is why O Guru we pray to you. Guru is the eldest and the wisest on this earth as he light the path to meet God. As per Hindu mythology God expresses his creation through Brahma. He holds the creation as Vishnu and destroys the creation through Mahesh or Shiva. He further creates daemons that control all the bad characters and Devta who controls all the good characters for the mankind. All the daemons or Devta have their Guru who always guides them what to do right. Name of the Guru of the Devta is The Jupiter. The birthday of the Jupiter is celebrated as Guru Puja. On that day all the Devta come to him and get his blessings. They tied Kalava a special red thread, which is the symbol of energy, strength and bond between two people. Guru Jupiter preys to God to protect them and bless them with all the prosperity. This day the entire instrument, books, material used in the process of education is cleaned and put in regular manner. The Ashram is cleaned and decorated. committing a crime or if they are considered a potential security risk. If a woman defies police and refuses to remove her veil she could be jailed for up to a year or fined $5500. The penalties are in line with some of the worlds toughest burqa rules. In France, where burqas are completely banned in public, women face fines of $202. The unprecedented laws follow an outcry over Carnita Matthews refusal to remove her niqab a full-length covering when her car was pulled over by police. Ms Matthews conviction for making a false statement was overturned after a judge found he could not prove it was really her who made the statement, because her face was covered. Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione called for the government to close the legal loophole that was preventing officers from identifying suspected criminals. Premier Barry OFarrell said there should be no discrimination in favour of or against any race when it came to helping police identify people suspected of criminal breaches. I dont care whether a person is wearing a motorcycle helmet, a burqa, niqab, face veil or anything else the police should be allowed to require those people to make their identification clear, he said after a cabinet meeting. Attorney-General Greg Smith is in charge of drafting the laws, which are expected to be introduced when parliament resumes in August. Not every person who disobeys the police orders will be fined or sent to jail, with first offenders possibly given a warning. In a situation like Ms Matthews, a court will be able to apply a maximum sentence of 12 months and a $5500 fine. Muslims Australia president Ikebal Patel said he supported the new laws but only for law enforcement purposes. We are very supportive of any legislation required to ensure the law enforcements are not impaired, he said. We would expect that this be done in a sensitive way. Police previously had the power to ask women to remove veils during the investigation of serious offences but did not have such powers during routine car stops.

MoRE Australians are dying in hospital with little say about how they spend their final days, the nations peak palliative care body says. Palliative Care Australia (PCA) called on state and federal governments to do more to ensure those with terminal illnesses have a say in how they die. PCA said a survey had found that despite most people preferring to die at home, the number able to do so had dropped to just 16 per cent in the past 50 years. Twenty per cent died in hospices, 10 per cent in nursing homes and the remainder in hospitals. consensus statement, the PCAs president Dr Scott Blackwell said many terminally ill people were not aware of the services available to them at the end of their lives. We want people to have a say in how they die, and to understand the support available for them, he said. This statement outlines what we need to work towards to ensure a future where all Australians are well informed and able to make good end of life choices and have access to quality palliative care wherever and whenever they need it. The PCA statement lists eight priority areas, including for all Australians to have reasonable access and resources to support them to die in the location of their choice. It calls for a single common law on advance age care planning to be adopted across Australia and for all Australians to be given advice about dying and death. CREDiT card providers will be banned from charging fees if a customer exceeds their credit limit under new laws passed through federal parliament. And banks and mortgage lenders must provide borrowers with a fact sheet from September to enable them to easily compare home loans. The new laws are designed to help people reduce the level of fees and interest they are charged and lower the risk of being given unrealistic credit cards limits they may be unable to pay. From July 1, 2012 it will be tougher for borrowers to exceed the credit limit on their card and credit providers will be prohibited from charging fees if a customer does exceed their credit limit, unless the customer has opted to have a higher buffer where they can be charged fees. It will be mandatory for credit providers to include in credit card application forms information about the annual percentage rate. Credit providers are also prohibited from making unsolicited offers to increase credit card limits. Under the new laws, when a person makes a payment on their credit card the repayment must go to the part of the balance of their credit card on which they are charged the highest interest rate, unless a consumer specifically elected to have a different payment arrangement. From September 1, home loan lenders must display on their website, and make available on request, a key facts sheet about the products they offer so consumers can compare the cost of different home loans. The government says the changes mean credit card providers face reduced revenue from charging higher fees if customers exceed their credit limit. Before the bill passed the Senate independent senator Nick Xenophon made a last-ditch attempt to save small home loan lenders from scrapping mortgage exit fees. His failed amendment called for only the big banks to be banned from slapping mortgage exit fees, allowing small lenders to continue to impose mortgage exit fees. Senator Xenophon told the Senate the governments blanket ban on exit fees would have a detrimental impact on smaller lenders who he predicted would be pushed out of the market. Unlike the big four, who can offset costs ... the smaller lenders need to be able to charge basic fees to keep them in the market, wwhe said.

A MCDoNALDS store manager was viciously bashed with a hammer and a young female worker terrorized with a machete during an overnight robbery in Melbourne. The 19-year-old manager underwent surgery for a fractured skull while the distraught employee was being counseled. Police say three men and a woman, all covering their heads with hoodies and bandanas, entered the fast-food outlet on Melbourne west at 1.35am (AEST) and demanded cash. Detective Senior Constable Ash Barry says the attack on the manager was unprovoked and cowardly. The level of violence the offenders displayed is shocking, Det Sen Const Barry told reporters. It was particularly cowardly, vicious and unprovoked. He said the young manager was bashed with the hammer while another robber threatened the young assistant with the machete. She is very shaken up by the whole incident, he said. Det Sen Const Barry said the hold-up might be linked to a spate of robberies on McDonalds stores in January which were concentrated in Melbournes south-eastern suburbs. Its an avenue of inquiry but too early to say at this stage, he said. The robbers were seen driving away from the fast-food outlet in a white Holden VT
