INDUSTRY PROFILE a)World Scenario The use of Titanium Dioxide is very vast and it has been produced in various parts of the world at different levels, which includes Multinational companies as well as small scale companies. It is estimated that worlds total installed capacity for Titanium Dioxide production is of the order of 4.22 to 4.38 million tons per annum. The overall average capacity utilization of Titanium Dioxide industry is 90 to 91%. The higher demand in global market attracts various firms to enter into the Titanium Dioxide manufacturing. The credit for recognizing the existence of Titanium Dioxide goes to Rev. William George who found trace to black magnetic sand unfam iliar to him in Manacine Parish (UK) and he named it Manacine. Subsequently Kiwin recovered a new white metallic oxide and called it Manacine. But it was M.K.H Lapest who discovered titanium .he examined Rutile and identified it as an oxide of metal named it as Titanium after Titan of Greek Mythology in the year 1775. The first commercial product of titanium was an alloy additive to steel, when ferro alloys were developed in USA in the year 1906. A decade after Titanium Dioxide pigment was produced on a com mercial scale. The use of titanium minerals in welding electrode coating gained acceptance in the mid thirties while titanium metal has been of commercial importance since1948. Commercial production commenced in the year 1951. The capacity was raised to 10 tonnes per day in 1960. The company commissioned its first Sulphuric Acid plant along with the expansion, producing 10 tonnes of acid per day for captive consumption. In the very same year, the management of the company was taken over by the governmentof Kerala. In 1965, the capacity of Titanium Dioxide was further increased to 18 tonnes/ day and a second sulphuric acid plant of 50 tpd capacity was also commissioned. A major expansion programme undertaken exclusively with in house capabilities was completed in 1973. Taking the sealizable capacity to 45 tpd, of anatase pigment. To meet the increased equipment of sulphuric acid, a third acid plant of 300 tpd, production was also put on steam. Then spulphuric acid required for the captive consumptionis produced at site using elemental sulpher. A modern sulphuric acid plant, which utilizes the tail gas recycling

DCDA technology and alkali scrubbing system helps to keep sulpher dioxide emissions well within permissible limits and keep the atmosphere around, cleam and healthy Titanium Dioxide is more stable than any other pigment. Its perfect non toxicity & chemical inertness make it an ideal choice as a white pigment. The light scattering property of finely divided titanium dioxide is unmatched by another known material. The chemically is available in 2 crystalline forms viz, anatase and rutile, whcih are of much commercial significance. In TTP Ltd, anatase grade is produced by the conventional sulphate technology. Titanium dioxide is the whitest of the white pigments and as replaced other less effective pigments such as Zinc oxide, lithopone etc. it is produced in TTP in the ANATASE form and marketed as AJANTOX. Anatase grade possesses excellent water dispersion properties and gives a clear tone in all ranges of application. Travancore Titanium Products Limited has recently launched a Rutile Grade Titanium Dioxide pigment viz., TTP RD -01. This product was developed in the year 2002 indigenously through the Sulphate route pigments. TTP markets this product without surface treatment at very competitive price. The titanium dioxide market is unique in that, while it is a product approaching 100 years old, there is skill no functional alternatives that provide the same value in use of customers. The industry has gone through metamorphise in the past decade. It is estimated that the worlds total titanium goes to Rev.William George who traces the black magnetic sand, unfamiliar to him in Menacine Parish (UK) and he named it Menacine. But it was M.H.K. laplast who discovered titanium, he examined rutile and identified as an oxide of a metal, and named it as titanium The top five producers of the world control 78% of the global capacity. They are DuPont (USA), Millennium Inorganic chemicals (Australia), Kert Megee (Canada), Huntsman (Tioxide) & Kronos (Germany) and ISK (Japan).Kemera, sachtlaleen and crystal come in the second tie. Cinkara, Preecheza, Zachem, Prolice, Hankook (South Korea), Sakai and Tyka (Japan). Kerala Minerals and Metals Ltd (India) and two other Ukrainian producers come next. All others are very small producers. Titanium dioxide enjoys a large market by any measure; . historically the market, has grown in volume at 3.5 % annually to reach close to 8 billion in production value

today. In the last decade demand has allowed to 3% and it is expected in the next, growth will be in the range of 2.5 -3.5%. Looking at the next 20 years, at vast some new Titanium dioxide pigment will be made through most of the industries, additional capacity will come from expansion.Pigment consumption rose sharply in western Europe and Asia/Pacific (Excluding Japan) during the year 2000. In East Asia, notably china, Taiwan, and South Korea, continues the path of strong recovery in 2000. East Asia, is presently the most attractive region in the world of Titanium dioxide. Share of Titanium dioxide pigment by different industries Table No. 2.1 Category Paint Plastics and Fiber Papers and Ink Others Total Percentage of consumption 57% 22% 15% 6% 100% East Asia was the most attractive region in the world for Titanium dioxide. In 2004 06, china became the second largest country in he world in terms of Titanium dioxide Production. b) Nation Scenario The Indian Reserves of Ilminite and Rutile are expected to be around 6,00,000 tonnes per year and most important sources are South Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Beach reserves are also in Ratnagiri (Maharashtra), Ganjan (Orissa) and Sreekakulam (Andhra Pradesh). The reserves in Kerala and Tamil Nadu are about 20 million tones. This information throws light into the possibilities of new manufacturers and competition in Titanium dioxide. Pigment industry in the Indian market. Titanium Dioxide Consumption Growth in India

The Indian paint industry has recorded growth of around 8% during the previous years. The Indian paint industry is expected to expand to almost 1.6 and 1.75 million metric tones by the years 2005. The current per capita consumption of paint is around 5 kg as compared to 5 kg, and 20 kg in the developed countries, which levels considerable potential in the overall demand for paint in India. Currently there are 4 units in India engaged inthe manufacturing of Titanium dioxide pigment (ANATASE & RUTILE) with a total combines capacity of 44560 raetro tones per annum. These units are; y y y y Kerala Minerals and Metals Ltd. Chavara Kollam. Travancore Titanium Products Ltd. Thiruvananathapuram. Kilburn Chemicals Ltd. Chennai. Kolmark Chemicals Ltd, KMML is the only unit producing Rutile grade Titanium dioxide pigment in India with an installed capacity of 30,000 tonnes per annum. c) State Scenario The History of mineral separating industry in Kerala st rts with the discovery of a Monozite in the Black Beach sand in Manavalakurichi in the year 1909 by a German Scientist names Showburg. This black sand contains large stock of rare minerals, Kerala is enriched with a huge amount of minerals deposits stretch along the seashore between Neendakara and Kayamkulam. These minerals deposits are commonly called Black sand or Dark sand. At present, Kerala TTP and KMML are the only two manufacturers of which producers Titanium dioxide pigment. Future Outlook Future, it is expected that the consumption rate will increase as the numbers of manufacturing industries like paint industry, Rubber Industry, Plastic etc will increase. Also India will have very wide scope in the field of mineral and metal industry. The company has taken several steps to ensure better future. They are; (1) Mechanical Transportation of Ilmenite from MS plant to TP unit reducing the transportation cost from R.s. 600/MT to less than Rs. 40/MT. (2) Ensuring possession of maximum land in the mining area, since the land acquisition proceeding were found to be extremely slow, so it has been decided to resort to negotiate purchase of land. (3) Orders placed for new filter, dryer, product packing system etc will expose the quality of product. (4) Formation of Research and Development wing to help development of new products.

Loss of Monopoly Position of Travancore Titanium Product For many years Travancore Titanium Product enjoyed a monopoly position in the market, as it was the only producer of Titanium dioxide pigment in India. With the commencement of production of rutile grade pigment by KMML in 1985 and anatase grade pigment by few small-scale companies; Travancore Titanium Product cost its monopoly in the market, Further another serious problem that affected the company is, cheap pigments imported from China and other countries. Titanium dioxide industry in India The India rare Earth Ltd. A government of India undertaking has set up a plant in Chavara (Kerala), Chathrapur Tamilnadu f or the separation of beach sand into various minerals. The Travancore Titanium products limited, another Kerala of government undertaking has plant set up for 100000 tpa separation plants near Chavara. The company started its first expansion programme in 1957 for doubling the annual production capacity from 1800 to 3600 tones (5 to 10 tons per day 1800 tones Rutile and 1800 tones Anatase) A Research Development wing was set up ion the company 1961. Industrial license for 50 tons per day expansion was obtained in July 1961. It was proposed to produce Rutile grade and Anatase grade side by side. Next expansion from 10 to 18 tons per day completed in October 1963. However, the Rutile production was temporarily discontinued in 1963. Government approved the expansion programme for producing 50 tons per day in 1967. The sole selling agency agreement with M/s TTK & Co. which has been in existence since 1954, was terminated on 30.6.1970 from which date TTP took over the sales directly. The next expansion programme to 24,500 tones per annum, including plant and equipments for the production of coated Rutile grade, was completed in 1973. The installed capacity after the expansion was as follows: Old Plant New Plant Total : : : 6,500 tones 18,000 tones 24,500 tones

As the capacity utilization was very low, a Committee appointed subsequently by the Government viz., Dr. Vazir Committee, assessed the achieved capacity of the plant as 15,000 tons per annum of Anatase grade pigment. The Resource Mobilization Policy Committee set up in 1974 by the State Planning Board recommended for formation of a Sole Selling Agency for the sale of products of government companies. Accordingly, the Kerala State Industrial Products Trading Corporation (KSIPTC) was formed in the year 1976.
st KSIPTC was appointed as the sole selling agents with effect from 1 March 1979.

Marketing of Titanium Dioxide is now done by TTPL itself.
