MESSAGE

by Stephanie Felker
The rst priority of your elected Board is to the residents of Bridgeland-Riverside and our vision, with your support and engagement, is to provide opportunities that create community health and vitality. BRCA recognizes the opportunity to improve our communitys sport and recreation infrastructure, and is steadfastly committed to the enhancement of facilities and programs from which families, seniors and residents of all ages and abilities can directly benet. An engineering study from Manticore in early 2009 showed that we would no longer be able to use our grassed area at the hall for an outdoor ice rink due to engineering constraints (this area was designed as a drainage pond and it is ill-advised to ood and freeze the area for an outdoor rink), and the Board then began community engagement for a capital project in our LOC and produced an Ipsos Reid Study. The Ipsos Reid study showed an apparent need for a community based hockey/skating arena within Bridgeland, and that, overall, the three most important facilities for all Residents (Youth, Families and Seniors) include a community gym/tness centre, skating rink; and sport court for basketball and volleyball; number one for Seniors was an outdoor sitting area/patio. With this study in mind, we began the process of setting aside monies, applying for CFEP, and working with the City of Calgary to receive monies held on our behalf after the General Hospital Redevelopment. We received a Conceptual Drawing Grant from the City of Calgary to design a proposed year-round multi-use facility concept from CDC Recreation. The proposed facility will be an ice rink in the winter and double as a water spray park and shinny rink/sport court in the summer. Continued on page 5

BRCA COMMUNITY NEWS

Planning Committee Update
Aside from several single family detached and semi-detached applications coming through the Planning Committee over the last while, the biggest news has been conrmation that the old Riverside Bungalow School will be sold by the Calgary Board of Education. We understand that they will sell it through a tendering process. If anyone has any great ideas for the future use of this designated Heritage Building, please email planning@brcacalgary.org. The Planning Committee meets on the rst Tuesday of every month at 7:00 pm at the BRCA Hall. If you have an interest in development permit applications in the Bridgeland Riverside area, please participate and voice your thoughts for the future of our community! Mark Stout. Planning-Civic Aair BRCA planning@brcacalgary.org hosted the Calgary Marathon and the Giver for Liver Walk. Both activities provided us with very positive feedback on our hall and location. Even with a cloudy, cold and rainy day. The Family Fun Day was a success. We had wonderful activities Art with Andrea, Music with Paul, The Photo Hut, T.J. Sparks magic show and balloon art, Face Painting with Liz and mini-golf. It was a great day. For the month of August, the outside of the building will be painted. So the hall may not be as pretty and may be loud, but the results will be awesome. We are looking to borrow strong clippers for plants in the outdoor area above the hall. If anyone can lend us clippers for a few weeks, it would be greatly appreciated. Please call me 403-263-5755 or email hall@brcacalgary.org if you can help out. I am thoroughly enjoying my job and have been slowing working my way around the community, meeting residents and businesses. Please watch for some community networking events this fall. Feel free to contract me anytime Tracy Moland, Facility Manager BRCA hall@brcacalgary.org Continued on page 8

FONDLY REMEMBERED
Once in a lifetime you meet a good soul that has aected you in a larger than life way. Zoltan was one of these people and was well known and loved by both friends, and neighbours in the community. It is with great sadness we report the passing of this wonderful and caring individual whos familiar face and good nature was a true testament to the multi-cultural fabric of our community. Zoltan was a strong supporter and never shy to share his excitement of the redevelopment of the community welcoming new businesses and residents with his infectious positive attitude and relaxed style. He will be missed and remembered fondly by a great many people. A group is working on a memorial plaque to be placed in the small adopted park he so meticulously maintained next to his residence up on 10th St. For more information on the memorial project contact: robinwilliams@shaw.ca Presidents Message, continued from page 3 The Outdoor rink is planned to operate for 18 weeks October 30 to March 3 and the Splash Park to operate for 9 weeks July 2 to September 5, with the area being used as a Sport Court in the shoulder seasons. The Board has planned for future costs of the recreational multi-use facility in the following ways: Lifecycle Fund of $40,000 (approx 10%) to be set aside from our 2012 Casino monies (Alberta Gaming). This amount will be placed in a long term investment with interest to cover the cost of future capital expenditures of recreational facility. City of Calgary Capital Use (money from General Hospital Redevelopment) in the amount of approx. $115,000 to be placed in a long term interest bearing account and interest will be used to pay for energy costs associated with water park Future Proposed Rentals - We will be oering the recreational area for party rentals and events to increase booking revenues. The BRCA held a Special General Meeting on Saturday, June 11th to propose the above multi-use recreational facility and vote on the potential expenditure of monies. The vote was successful. This means that I will now begin the process of working with AGLC and the City of Calgary to obtain the approvals necessary to break-ground on this very exciting project. I recently received a letter from the City of Calgary with approval in principal of this capital project. The next step is to begin an environmental assessment and a nancial and technical review of the capital project. The nancial review will need to be approved by the City of Calgary as the landowner, and then I will work with CDC Recreation to submit the DP. If all goes well, you may see construction at the Hall in the fall. The Board would like to thank everyone who took the time to attend the Special General Meeting, and for your continued support and condence as we work towards completion of this project. Bridgeland Trac Report

1st Ave Trac Calming: 1st Ave N.E. has been identied as the #6 area of concern in Calgary communities for trac calming, and we should expect some action to take place either later this year or the start of next year. The City Transportation Department is now looking at individual areas of concern across the city as opposed to looking at trac calming from a community-to-community perspective. We are not sure of the process yet, and how these trac calming measures will be devised. However, community involvement will certainly be necessary at some point prior to a plan being developed by the Transportation Department and the Bridgeland-Riverside community. Stay tuned for more on that. Its worth noting also that, if pay parking on 1st Ave were to be eliminated, as is being discussed, more vehicles would be parked on 1st Ave, which would narrow the roadway and eectively change the look of the avenue. Typically, it would no longer be a wide open 4lane road, but a narrow 2-lane road. A narrower road tends to slow trac down. Local businesses should also benet from a switch away from the pay parking. Calgary Police Service: If you have specic trac violations to report, please ll out a Trac Service Request Form at http://www. calgarypolice.ca/sections-trac-service-form.html. The handling of these service requests at CPS has been improved so that these forms do not disappear in their system as was previously happening. Once you submit a request, you should now get some feedback from the Calgary Police Service. Drive Safely: With children getting out of school, and cyclers and rollerbladers of all ages out on the roads, please drive at a safe speed in our community. If our residents drive at reasonable speeds, other cars behind you will have to drive at a safer speed as well. Call 311: If you see crosswalk lines in your area that should be re-painted and made more visible, please contact the City to have this addressed. BRZ: Many parts of Calgary have Business Revitalization Zones (BRZ) to help improve the local businesses image, accessibility and visibility. The formation of a BRZ along 1st Ave. is being discussed and would greatly contribute to the Avenue becoming a more pedestrian-friendly corridor. John McKee, Trac BRCA

Bridgeland Soccer Review

It has been another successful year for Bridgeland Soccer, a program that brings children from Bridgeland, Renfrew, Inglewood and Winston Heights together for the fun of the game. What I love about this soccer league is that it provides families the opportunity to come together and build a community. I truly feel that if people spend the time to get to know their neighbours, great things can happen. For that, I feel very fortunate to have been involved in this program for the past 6 years. THE BRIDGES - PHASE 3

Construction of the Bridges Phase 3
As you will have noticed, infrastructure construction in Phase 3 of The Bridges started in April. It began with the installation of deep utilities (water, storm and sanitary lines). Work on surface improvements, which will include streets, curbs and gutters, sidewalks, shallow utilities, and street lighting, began in May, but was delayed due to the wet weather. However we still expect the landscaping to commence in August and be nished by the end of September 2011. Phase 3 is the last phase of The Bridges and is located between Centre Ave. NE and McDougall Road between 9 St. NE. Four fully serviced sites will be built along with a new small park called St. Matthew Square. Bridgeland residents should not expect too much inconvenience due to the smaller scale of this phase compared to previous phases. WARD 9 REPORT
My wife, Barb, and I got engaged in Italy back in the fall of 2005. At at the beginning of June this spring, we were able to steal away and return to Italy. Our mission was to see some parts of the country that we hadnt yet visited, as well as to spend some time with my family in the places we know and love. Following our 2005 trip I made a presentation that critically compared the situation of my fathers ancestral home of Piedmont in northwestern Italy to our home here in Calgary. My basic thesis was that Piedmont has successfully cradled a remarkably civilized and enviable quality of human life for thousands of years. While Calgary is an amazing place on so many levels, there are serious questions as to whether the City weve built here, during the last short century, will be anywhere near as enduring and nurturing over the very long term. I strongly believe that until we start building cities around people- such as those built thousands of years ago in Italy- instead of around cars, we will continue to create incomplete, unsustainable communities, and a City that we cant aord. My return to Italy this year was also about critically revisiting the thesis that is so central to what I believe, and, on account of my position on City Council, is now helping to shape change in Calgary. Strong, healthy, and vibrant cities are built for and around people. Real neighbourhoods which provide all the basic necessities and amenities within walking distance, have been at the heart of all of historys great cities. In the past 60 years have weve started building cities around cars. With this followed regulations and bylaws that facilitated a city for cars, while limiting the possibilities for neighbourhoods built around people. When I returned to Italy this past June, I was reminded that the best cities to travel to are often the ones that have a regulatory system that is built at the human-scale. The question always boils down to: what kind of City do we want to live in, and what processes Our clinic is recently under new ownership, and Dr. Tom Pecek and and regulations are necessary in order to get our team look forward to meeting residents of the Crescent Heights/ us there? Bridgeland community! We strive to provide personalized, quality care I am extremely excited to see the results of the Mission Road Main Street Innovation to all our clients, and to empower them to make informed decisions Project - a project that Team Ward 9 about their oral health. spearheaded in mid-June - that looked at Flexible Evening and Weekend Appointments Available doing planning dierently. The Charrette, which was used on Mission Road, is an Direct Billing to your Insurance Company (you pay only the difference) innovative design process that focuses on New Patients and Emergencies Welcome collaboration, eciency, and producing a Complimentary Consultations (implants, cosmetics, orthodontics, 2nd opinions) regulatory framework at the human-scale. It is regulatory innovations such as these Languages Spoken Including English, Cantonese, Mandarin, Vietnamese which will be needed to create the vibrant, Free Parking sustainable, and complete communities in which we all aspire to live. With the new Council, I am more condent than ever before that this is possible. At the end of the day, we dont need to go to Italy for inspiration. Here in Calgary we have the incredible people, the dedicated work ethic, and the spirit of innovation to Mondays to Fridays 9:00am - 7:00pm make tomorrows changes today. It is up to us to see what change needs to be done, Saturdays 9:00am - 5:00pm Sundays & Holidays - Closed and do it. Have a great summer BridgelandRiverside, you deserve it!

E xperience the Difference

Our practice now offers a unique, breakthrough approach to patient care called Koren Specic Technique (KST). There is no twisting, turning, cracking or popping of joints with KST; instead, you receive gentle, specic corrections to your spine and structural system. We correct a serious form of nerve stress caused by distortions in your spine and body structure. This stress is known as a subluxation. KST permits us to quickly, easily and gently check and correct (or adjust) your body for subluxations, wherever they may arise. This includes your cranial bones, TMJ, entire spinal column, sacrum, coccyx, discs, hips, sternum, ribs, upper thigh bones, shoulders, knees, feet, hands and anything else that needs correcting. Find out why people suffering from sciatica, migraine, colitis, chronic pain, thoracic hump, poor posture, disc problems, depression, dyslexia, sleeping difculties, autism and many other conditions rave about KST.

Bridgeland - back in the day

by Larry Simon
I was an artist for many years, but I was forced to stop when my youngest daughter was accidentally killed. As a form of therapy, and to fulll my creative side, I became a writer. For many years I have written in the Bridges, and my wife Terrys and my books have reached over the million copies mark. Through the years I have met many fabulous people who I enjoy writing about. One such person is known as The Man of the Music, and his name is Ken Shoults. I consider him to be the goodwill ambassador of music. Ken grew up in the area; his father owned Shoults Electronics, which was on 20th Ave and Centre Street. Ken has worked with many outstanding artists. In my opinion he has been the backbone of music in Calgary, and he has helped many artists to be successful in their own right. Recently, I got a copy of one of his CDs titled What a Wonderful World. I found it was easy listening and extremely enjoyable. I am looking forward to getting more CDs of his and checking them out as well. But Ken is not settling down on his early successes of helping young talented musicians and singers, so he started a recording studio where he actually helps with the recordings. Ken doesnt keep this as an exclusive clientele, as he is also keenly interested in helping anyone with an interest in music. He has been around the world performing, with a recent performance in Carnegie Hall in New York City. He is also known for his extraordinary and unusual ability to blow two horns at one time: a ugelhorn and a trumpet, and in harmony, no less! You can see Ken Shoults on YouTube, from when he was featured on a Television Breakfast Show in Edmonton at a past Klondike Days. You can also check out his website at www.KenShoults.com where you can read more about his career and listen to cuts of one of his CDs. To nd out about doing a recording, or to obtain one of his discs, you can call him at (403) 256-8404 or email Shoultsk@shaw. ca. Id bet hed love to chat about his younger years spent growing up right around here, too. Ken Shoults is one of those Bridgeland Boys who developed some of his many talents right here in the heart of the city, and then went out into the big ol world and showed everyone what a success story from Bridgeland looked like! - This regular column running in your Bridges community newsletter is edited by Lori Losowy. Larry spent his formative years in BridgelandRiverside and went on to become a multi-talented artist. He loves to share his stories and memories of the way things were, back in the day.
