com (312) 334-8360 Wilmette Almost-Empty-Nesters Find New Home at Mallinckrodt In The Park WILMETTE, ILL., May 24, 2011 When one thinks of the typical household in an age-restricted condominium community, one probably doesnt conjure an image of Adrianne and Bob Furniss, who are among the newest residents at Mallinckrodt in the Park in Wilmette. The Furnisses are a youthful 55, the minimum age for residency at Mallinckrodt. They have one daughter who is a freshman at New Trier High School and another daughter in college. In addition to his day job at the Illinois Department of Human Services, Bob is training to be a chef. And their home just happens to be located in the chapel of a former convent. But the Furnisses also have a lot in common with the average retirees who populate most agerestricted developments. They relish a maintenance-free lifestyle without the time and expense of yard work and snow shoveling. They attend community barbecues and parties and look forward to participating in summer concert and theater outings. And they count on their community concierge for everything from receiving deliveries to watering their plants while theyre out of town. After 18 years in a large home in Wilmette, the Furnisses were ready to return to a simpler, more turnkey lifestyle like the one they enjoyed as apartment dwellers in New York City. Yet they wanted to find a home that was architecturally significant, and they needed a building that would accept their Wire Fox Terrier, Ringo. For two months they looked at all of the available condominiums and townhomes in their price range from Evanston to Fort Sheridan. Ultimately, they discovered Mallinckrodt in the Park, the adaptive re-use and condominium conversion of the historic Mallinckrodt convent-turned-college in Wilmette. But there was one problem. The minimum entry age for the community was 62. A short time later, Adrianne was explaining her familys dilemma to her water aerobics instructor at the YMCA when all of the sudden the instructor got very excited. It turns out her brother had recently taken over as the projects developer and had just won approval from the village to lower the entry age to 55. It was an unbelievable coincidence. Today, Mallinckrodt in the Park is more than 80% sold with only 11 condominiums remaining. Floor plans include one to three bedrooms, one to three and a half baths, and 1,148 to 2,952 square feet. Prices range from $205,000 up to $699,000 for the two-level penthouse. One or two indoor heated parking spaces are included per plan. There is also one affordable unit with one bedroom, one bath and 745 square feet priced at $110,000.

While every floor plan at Mallinckrodt in the Park is unique, the Furnisses chose one of only two residences fashioned from the convents chapel. The 2,300-square-foot, two-bedroom, 2.5-bath home features the original vaulted ceilings, Corinthian columns with angels in relief, and large round windows. The architecture, while breathtaking, posed some decorating challenges, noted Adrianne. The main room has three spaces, each separated by a set of columns. We dedicated each space to a different use while maintaining a flow throughout the area and preserving the impact of the architectural features, she said. We wanted to respect the architecture yet not have it dictate our dcor or choice of finishes. Thus, the home has modern lighting and an eclectic mix of furniture, art and artifacts. The Furnisses enjoy entertaining, so they removed the wall between the kitchen and living areas, expanding counter space and creating a more seamless flow between rooms. One of the most creative uses of space occurs in the master suite, where the Furnisses converted an 8 by 24 space, billed as a large walk-in closet, into a sitting room complete with an upright piano, built-in bookshelves, a credenza with two computer stations, a sofa and a flatscreen TV. The team at Mallinckrodt was great to work with, said Adrianne. The workmanship is excellent, and we were able to do a lot of customization. Staying in the New Trier school district was a priority for the Furnisses, but they enjoy Mallinckrodts location for a variety of other reasons including its proximity to the Metra station, a Treasure Island grocery store within walking distance, and easy access to downtown Evanston, Winnetka and Wilmette. Mallinckrodt in the Park is also located adjacent to a 14-acre park with walking paths and gardens. After nearly two decades of single-family living, the transition to a condo could have been a little unsettling. But the Furnisses knew they had made the right decision when the Blizzard of 2011 dumped two feet of snow on Chicago the day after they moved in. We never had to pick up a shovel, said Adrianne. A sales center and decorated model for Mallinckrodt in the Park are open Sunday, noon to 4 p.m., and by appointment.
