RESPONSIBILITIES: Educate tenants and community organizations about home-based health hazards including but not limited to: asthma triggers, lead poisoning, pests and vermin, mold, etc. Creatively problem solving with tenants to address healthy homes problems by utilizing integrated pest management, applying information from the Chicago Residential Landlord Tenant Ordinance, and community organizing. Track services and prepare written reports. Identify and support diverse tenant leaders to lead a healthy homes campaign. Metropolitan Tenants Organization a grassroots membership organization exists to organize, educate and empower tenants to have a voice in decisions which affect the affordability and availability of decent, safe and accessible housing. PRIMARY DUTIES: 1. Educate parents of asthmatic children about their rights as tenants and help facilitate improvements to current housing conditions by problem solving, integrated pest management, community organizing, and utilization of existing resources. 2. Fulfill contractual obligations with community partners and funders. 3. Maintain organized and detailed case notes and prepare program reports as scheduled 4. Organize and facilitate tenants rights workshops for tenants and staff of community organizations 5. Coordinate social media strategies for the Healthy Homes program including developing media relationships, updating the website, Facebook, and Twitter with stories, bulletins, reports, testimony, etc. 6. Maintain and build organizational membership and increase collaboration and coordination among community organizations to further program objectives and MTO mission 7. Organize meetings with tenant leaders, tenant associations and community activists to address collective issues 8. Other duties as assigned which support the overall mission of MTO such as assisting in the planning of annual events, campaigns, open house events, etc. QUALIFICATIONS: At least one year of community organizer experience, preferably in housing or health issues At least two (2) years of college required Knowledge of Chicagos social, political and housing issues including lead poisoning, health and environmental justice disparities, and related issues. Proficient with Microsoft Professional Office including Access. Capable of responsibly utilizing social media including Facebook, Twitter, WordPress, YouTube. Experience with geocoding or other data mapping programs is a plus. Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work independently as well as in teams. Experience, ability, patience, and desire to work with racially and culturally diverse communities. Strong organizational skills and an ability to work days and some evenings and weekends. Excellent oral and written communications skills Have a valid drivers license, current insurance and a car. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
