Estamos ante la familia ms numerosa del reino mineral. La familia de la Slice, el Cuarzo, el diamante de los aos a.C. Si hay un elemento en nuestro planeta casi tan abundante como el oxgeno, es el Silicio. Cuando los dos se unen forman una estructura molecular llamada Slice que forma el 90% de la corteza terrestre.

This mineral is totally transparent and colourless in its pure state, what is called rock crystal. The different impurities, elements tracing, iron oxide, manganese, titanium, calcic carbonate, micas, asbestos, tourmalines confer it colour and life. It is found in igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. It fills cavities, geodes, or it covers smooth surfaces forming drusas. It has several polymorphous that are stable depending on temperature. When you talk about quartz in general, we are referring to alpha quartz of low temperature, 575C. Fine grains variety is the first thing the man used to make tools and weapons,the flint. Some years later and knowing the material, he made glasses, containers for liqueurs and medicines, statues, some cane and daggers handles and, gradually, he made classifications and a significant part of this family was used as gem.

Este mineral en estado puro es totalmente transparente e incoloro; es lo que se llama cristal de roca. Se encuentra en rocas gneas, sedimentarias y metamrficas. Rellena cavidades, Geodas, o bien tapiza superficies lisas formando Drusas. Tiene varios polimorfos que son estables dependiendo de la temperatura. Cuando se habla de cuarzo en general, nos referimos al cuarzo alfa de baja temperatura, 575 C. La variedad de grano fino es lo primero que utiliz el hombre para construir herramientas y armas, el pedernal. Con el paso de los aos y conociendo el material, se construyeron copas, recipientes para licores y medicinas, estatuas, parte de la empuadura de bastones y puales y, poco a poco, se fueron haciendo clasificaciones y una parte significativa de esta familia se emple como gema.

It crystallizes in the triagonal system. Its habit is usually the hexagonal prism once finished the bipyramid one. But as there is nothing perfect, we can find macled individuals, that is to say, right and left crystals together, what does not change at all the property mentioned before. Its hardness is 7 in Mohs scale. It has a vitreous shine when it could be transparent, translucent or opaque. The existence of small quantities of other elements, inclusions or crystalline faults confers it colour. Its thickness is about the 265 and its refractive index 154 155 is uniaxial positive, with a low dispersion 0013, so it does not present much fire. It is triboluminescent, when it is sawed or devastated it emits flashes of yellow-orange light. It begins to be synthesized in 1845, but until one hundred years later there are no crystals of a good size, used as radium oscillators during the Second World War. >

Cristaliza en el sistema trigonal. Su hbito suele ser el prisma hexagonal terminado el bipirmide. Carece de planos y centro de simetra; lo que confiere unas cualidades muy apreciadas en el mundo tcnico: piroelectricidad y piezoelectricidad, es decir, se carga elctricamente al aumentar la temperatura y ejerciendo presin sobre sus ejes binarios. Es un dipsido de silicio y sus unidades tetradricas se ordenan de forma helicoidal en el espacio, como si se tratara de una escalera de caracol; dando lugar a cristales derechos e izquierdos que hacen girar el plano de polarizacin de la luz dependiendo de su orientacin. Pero como no hay nada perfecto, podemos encontrar individuos maclados, es decir, cristales derechos o izquierdos juntos, lo cual no altera para nada la propiedad antes mencionada. Pero si la unin es de un individuo de una mano y otro de otra, la polarizacin rotatoria queda anulada. De esto se desprende la necesidad de los cientficos de sintetizar un material sin maclas. Su dureza es de 7 en la escala de Mohs. Posee un brillo vtreo pudiendo ser transparente translcido u opaco. La existencia de pequeas cantidades de otros elementos, inclusiones o defectos cristalinos le confiere color. Su densidad ronda el 2,65 y su ndice de refraccin 1,54 1,55 es uniaxial positivo, con una dispersin baja 0,013, por lo que presenta poco fuego. Es triboluminiscente, cuando se sierra o devasta emite flashes de luz amarillo naranja. Se comienza a sintetizar en 1845, pero hasta cien aos despus no se consiguen cristales de buen tamao, utilizados como osciladores de radio en la segunda guerra mundial. >

Deposits and Colour

Alpinas chain is very rich in this mineral, as well as Madagascar, Japan, Korea and the United States. The biggest and best pieces of citrin and smoked quartz are extracted from Brazil and Scotland. This last year really beautiful smoked pieces of a precious colour can be found in Catalonia (Spain). The natural citrin is pale yellow to orangey gold, owing its colour to iron tracings in ferric state. There are two more types of citrin in the market: the oldest one is the thermally treated amethyst, its shade is darker, and it differentiates from the natural one for its typical zonings. Furthermore it is not pleochroic. Finally a thermally treated smoked quartz or cairngorm to no more than 575C, producing a greenish yellow citrin, called lemon citrin. Smoked quartz or cairngorm is light dun to dark black morion. The colours cause is more complex, in the crystal there are vacancies linked to oxygen and part of the silicon has been replaced by aluminium. This material has been submitted to natural radiation on Earth itself. This last year some pieces of chestnut colour have been found in Montseny (Spain). The quartz with rutilo is one of the examples of how an inclusion, or rather, lots of them increases the value of a gem. Rutilo is an oxide of natural titanium that, depending on its oxidation state is light to dark gold yellow, as reddish dun old gold.

History and Tradition

Ancient cultures believed that each precious stone had crystallized around an entity that served the person who wore it as a protection. From that moment, amulets and talismans came up, and with the pass of time and in different cultures they gave rise to reliquaries, medals and jewellery pieces that passed from fathers to sons. Gems name has varied with time. This, as well as with commercial names, is really confusing. In the past with the name of chrysolite , or Golden Stone, named all yellow stones. In the XII century they are called Topazes. But there are different mineral species with a similar colour: yellow beryl, citrin, chrysoberyl, topaz from Bohemia and yellow sapphire. Until the XIX century we can find citrin as a topaz from Bohemia, or Scotland, topaz from Spain or Madeira or western. Smoked quartz is related to a beautiful legend. In wars between England and Scotland, the Scottish warriors wore it as an amulet by way of brooch or needle on the left shoulder, where they held the plaid, a heavy wool cloak that served them as a coat, layer and blanket. If despite this the warrior died, the person who found the body had to give it a decent burial. The reward for that would be the brooch, which would give its last service to its owner.

Yacimientos y Color
La cadena Alpina es muy rica en este mineral, as como Madagascar, Japn, Corea y Estados Unidos. Los ms grandes y mejores ejemplares de citrino y cuarzo ahumado se extraen de Brasil y Escocia. Este ltimo ao se encuentran ejemplares ahumados de un bellsimo color en Catalua (Espaa). El Citrino natural va del amarillo plido al dorado anaranjado, debiendo su color a trazas de hierro en estado frrico. Hay dos tipos ms de citrinos en el mercado: el ms antiguo es la Amatista tratada trmicamente, su tono es ms oscuro, y se diferencia del natural por las zonaciones de color tpicas de ella. Adems no es pleocrico. Por ltimo un cuarzo ahumado tratado trmicamente a no ms de 575 C, dando lugar a un citrino amarillo verdoso, el llamado citrino limn. El cuarzo ahumado o Cairngorm va del pardo claro al oscuro casi negro morin. La causa del color es ms compleja, en el cristal hay vacantes ligadas a oxgeno y parte del Silicio ha sido sustituido por Aluminio. Este material ha sido sometido a radiacin natural en la propia tierra. En este ltimo ao se han encontrado unos ejemplares de color castao en el Montseny (Espaa). El cuarzo con rutilo es uno de los ejemplos de cmo una inclusin o mejor dicho un montn de ellos aumenta el valor de una gema. El rutilo es un xido de Titanio natural que, dependiendo de su estado de oxidacin va desde un color amarillo dorado claro a uno ms oscuro, como oro viejo pardo rojizo.

Historia y Tradicin
Las culturas antiguas crean que cada piedra preciosa haba cristalizado en torno a una entidad que le serva de proteccin a la persona que la llevara. A partir de aqu nacieron amuletos, talismanes, que con el paso del tiempo y en diferentes culturas dieron lugar a relicarios, medallas y piezas de joyera que fueron pasando de padres a hijos. Los nombres de las gemas han ido variando con el paso del tiempo. Esto, unido a los nombres comerciales, realmente es un autntico galimatas. Antiguamente con el nombre de Crisolito, o Piedra de Orose, nombraban todas las piedras de color amarillo. En el siglo XII se pasan a llamar Topacios. Pero hay diferentes especies minerales con un color similar: Berilo amarillo, Citrino, Crisoerilo, Topacio y Zafiro amarillo. Hasta el siglo XIX el Citrino lo podemos encontrar como Topacio de Bohemia o de Escocia, Topacio de Espaa o Madeira u occidental. El cuarzo ahumado se encuentra vinculado a una bella leyenda. Los guerreros escoceses en las guerras entre Inglaterra y Escocia lo llevaban como amuleto en forma de broche o aguja en el hombro izquierdo, donde sujetaban el plaid, un pesado manto de lana que les serva de abrigo, capa y manta. Si a pesar de esto el guerrero mora, la persona que encontrara el cuerpo deba proporcionarle un entierro decente. El pago de ste sera el broche, que prestara un ltimo servicio a su dueo.

Al Citrino se lo ha relacionado desde la Edad Media con el color amarillo, el oro y el Sol, al igual que el cuarzo con rutilo. De esta familia, los monocristales, incluyendo el cuarzo ahumado, son extremadamente energticos. Se han de utilizar con precaucin, poco a poco, con la seguridad de que la persona a la que estamos tratando no tenga una enfermedad latente o que no nos haya comunicado. El primer paso ser aproximar las manos al cuerpo, recorriendo todo el permetro, para notar cambios de temperatura bruscos. Si esto ocurre debemos buscar la causa y no podemos aplicar cuarzo (ninguna de las tres variedades mencionadas). El cuarzo ahumado absorbe las energas excedentes que impiden la correcta circulacin y asimilacin de los nutrientes. Por decirlo de algn modo es una gema ms terrestre. Nos conecta con la Madre Tierra, su energa penetra en el cuerpo por las plantas de los pies y por el chacra basal. Se complementa perfectamente con el Citrino, entrando su energa por la corona, tercer ojo, garganta, plexo solar y las palmas de las manos. Cuando ambas energas se encuentran en la cavidad abdominal aqu comienza el trabajo en equipo. El citrino deja el campo libre para que el terrestre siga su ascenso. Nos aporta claridad mental, agudiza nuestra intuicin, nos ayuda a disipar las penas, a llenarnos de empuje, optimismo, vigor y energa. Pero esto que es tan saludable, hay personas que tienen dificultad en asimilarlo y lo transforman en inquietud, nerviosismo, impulsividad o impaciencia. Por eso es bueno el encuentro con su hermano de tonos ms oscuros que, al ser ms terrestre pondr freno al caballo desbocado de las emociones. Ahora podemos focalizar bien nuestra energa, todas esas palabras que haban quedado agolpadas en la garganta, debido a la aceleracin del pensamiento, salen sin problema una tras otra de nuestros labios, de forma ordenada, muestra de un pensamiento racional bien estructurado. El abdomen es la cocina de las emociones, el citrino ayuda al sistema digestivo y en particular al hgado y la vescula liberando bilis, descongestionando el rgano y restableciendo el circuito asimilacin-almacenaje-eliminacin. Nos sentimos mejor, ms tranquilos, con la mente ms clara, no tenemos ese enturbamiento producido por los empachos y las malas digestiones. El carcter parece que se vuelve ms afable, hasta somos capaces de reconocer el lado ms amable de la vida, quizs por eso se recomienda tambin en casos de depresin leve o moderada. Al cuarzo con rutilo se le ha llamado la gema de la creatividad. El cristal hospedador hace de amplificador del rutilo. Se suele utilizar como instrumento de investigacin de la personalidad, y como llave de acceso a la memoria ms profunda. Algunos terapeutas lo utilizan para la regresin a vidas pasadas. Mejora el sistema inmunolgico. En personas entrenadas y sin problemas de hipertensin, apoyado sobre los senos frontales -tercer ojo-, induce con relativa facilidad a la telepata. Por ltimo. si nos concentramos mirando un citrino sobre la palma de la mano, llegaremos a percibir levemente el calor de nuestro propio sol, nuestra propia fuerza interior, y eso sin lugar a dudas es nuestra mejor medicina.
