Founders Day Weekend July 23-24

OGDENSBURG - Celebrating the areas rich history and historic battles, Ogdensburg will kick off Founders Day with a mock battle, music and kids games. More than 250 years ago the roar of cannon fire echoed over the St. Lawrence River on the now peaceful stretch between Ogdensburg and Prescott, Ontario. The final battle of the French and Indian War - the battle that truly led to the French losing Canada - was fought here in August 1760. Founders Day Weekend, July 23-24, is the annual commemoration of Ogdensburgs French colonial history and the Battle of the Thousand Islands. Lighthouse Point radiates the color and pageantry of the military reenactment and colonial trade fair. As many as 500 participants from the U.S. and Canada, dressed in 18th-century clothes, establish a bustling encampment of white canvass tents. A vibrant French and English naval contingent moors their historically accurate small boats along the shore and bivouacs there. The crews race on Saturday morning, but Saturday and Sunday afternoon the boats with bow guns and muskets blazing battle on the river. The skirmishing on the water leads into the land battle. Across the width of Lighthouse Point, the opposing forces and their Native allies maneuver in the fog of war - the grey smoke from their muskets and artillery. Civilian life of the colonies springs to life, too. Women and children, pipers, dancers, artisans and traditional trades create a festive atmosphere. Sutlers, the merchants that followed the armies, set up their shops to furnish just about anything a reenactor, or 21st century tourist, could want. The reenactment of the Battle of the Thousand Islands and the colonial trade fair are adjacent to the archaeological remains of Fort de la Prsentation, built by the French in 1749. When the tide of war turned in favor of the English, the French vacated the fort in early 1759 and continued the

United Helpers Maple City Mile Event, Not Race

The United Helpers will be sponsoring the second Annual Maple City Mile. The Maple City Mile, is not a race but an event, and will be held on Saturday, July 30th at 10:15 a.m. beginning at Roethels, 1801 Ford Street and finishing at Key Bank, 333 Ford Street. "On the day of the parade, it's estimated that over 20,000 people line Ford Street. By participating in the Maple City Mile runners have the opportunity to have thousands of people cheering them on, while still allowing plenty of time for runners to return to your favorite spot to enjoy the parade," organizers say. Awards will be given to the first three male and female winners in each age group. Results will be posted and awards will be presented immediately following the race. In addition to the traditional prizes a prize will be awaded for the runner with the best masquerade/custume. The registration fee after July 6 is $15 and T-Shirts can't be guaranteed. For more information, call Ned Hirt at 393-3074 Ext 220.

construction of Fort Lvis downriver on Ile Royal, now Chimney Island. La Prsentation was a wooden stockade; Lvis was a substantial fortification. The 1760 Battle of the Thousand Islands began with the capture of the French corvette LOutauaise by a swarm of English row galleys off abandoned Fort de la Prsentation. The battle continued with the successful, weeklong siege of Fort Lvis. The English pressed on to accept the capitulation of Montreal. For more than a decade, the annual Founders Day Weekend has honored the shared history of Canada and the United States. Here, where the Oswegatchie River flows into the St. Lawrence, the Fort La Prsentation Association plans to rebuild the historic fort as a high quality tourist attraction. Seaway Festival Parade Draws Huge Crowds

By BRIAN KIDWELL I love a parade. That phrase pretty much says it all, enhancing visions of sunny skies, marching bands, floats, and costumed entertainers. And people. Thousands upon thousands of people, happily crammed along the parade route. That is the 51st Ogdensburg International Seaway Festival parade. On Saturday, July 30, at 11 a.m., the colorful and musical procession will head down the length of Ford Street to the Greenbelt. There will be people. Lots of them. Festival co-chairman Kenneth G. Cole is certain of it. Ill be anywhere from 10,000 to 20,000 people, he said. All of the parades participants are still being lined up, but many of them are repeaters and have been coming to the festival for years. They include floats, fraternal and veterans organizations and high school marching bands from Ogdensburg Free Academy and Heuvelton, Lisbon, Morristown and Edwards-Knox central schools Then there are the fire departments. According to Mr. Cole, the firefighters who will march and be accompanied by their vehicles will be from Ogdensburg, Edwards, DeKalb Junction, Lisbon, Canton, Heuvelton, Morristown, Rensselaer Falls and elsewhere. They come from all over the county, Mr. Cole said. Entertainment of a carnival flavor will be provided along the parade route by jugglers, stilt walkers and clowns. The marching bands will be joined in providing music by, among others, two other parade staples, the PennDixie Band from Pennsylvania and the Hitmen from Rochester. Both are brass groups. The Hitmen are notable for their prison garb. The group also knows that Ford Street can be a pretty unforgiving place to be on a sunny, hot day. But theyll be ready. Theyll adjust their outfits with the weather, Mr. Cole said. A notable absence from this years parade will be three bagpipe bands from Canada. According to Mr. Cole, they are committed that day to perform at a Scottish Highlands games event in Ontario.

Zonta Antique Show July 24

The Ogdensburg Area Zonta Clubs 37th Annual Antique & Artisan Show is scheduled for July 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Edgar A. Newell Golden Dome at Ogdensburg Free Academy. This is one of the many exciting events included as part of the week long Ogdensburg International Seaway Festival. Admission is $4 at the door. The featured exhibitor is Traditional Arts in Upstate New York, Canton, an organization dedicated to preserving the folk traditions of the north country. Organizers say having TAUNY featured at the show bridges the gap between antique dealers and highquality artisan goods destined to become antiques. Participating dealers will offer quality antiques, unique and collectible primitives, glassware, furniture, vintage clothing, antique jewelry and other collectibles. North country artisans will display a wealth of exquisite one-of-a-kind items for sale including but not limited to basketry, fine wearable art, leather goods, artfully blended herbs, oils & potpourris, pottery, textiles, terrariums, photography, woodwork, stained glass, and jewelry. Additional diversions include a pie sale to benefit a local food pantry; Steve Lalondes Ogdensburg memorabilia will be on display; retired jeweler Sherin Cunningham will appraise jewelry; Lee Jones will be showing his antique cars, and an exciting new addition to this years event is the silent auction. Concessions will be available throughout the day. The Ogdensburg Area Zonta Club is part of a global organization aimed at furthering womens education and youth development and proceeds from the show will benefit local scholarships. Contact Debbie Abel at 393-7156 or djabel@verizon.net or Sherin Cunningham at 393-3599 or sherincunningham@hotmail.com for additional information.

Seaway Festival Sporting Events Slated

Sporting events will once again provide an energized kickoff to the Ogdensburg International Seaway Festival on Saturday, July 23. The Remington Canoe Race will again start the activity flowing with canoeists in several recreation and competition classes gathering at the Heuvelton Boat Launch at 9 a.m. The competition and recreation classes will have separate starting times with paddlers travelling down the Oswegatchie River to finish at the boat launch at the Ogdensburg Greenbelt. While the canoeists finish their trek one of the most popular participation events of the festival will be taking place. From 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. a throng of young anglers will line the city docks at the greenbelt looking to land the winning lunker at the Kids Fishing Derby. Bait is provided for the youngsters who may weigh-in their catches throughout the morning. The top finishers receive a new bicycle and the great majority of the field go home with a prize from a random draw. The Greenbelt Horseshoe Pits will be alive with pitchers beginning at 10 a.m. for the Seaway Festival Horseshoe Tournament. The tournament offers honors in singles and doubles. The first of two road races of the Seaway Festival will be held on Sunday, July 24 with the Four-Mile Maple City Trail Run-Walk. Race day registration will begin at 8 a.m. with the trail run to begin at 9 a.m. A Youth Fun Run will be held at 8:30 a.m. Medals are awarded to age group leaders for both men and women and to the leading male and female walkers. Golfers will also have a chance to apply their skills in a seaway festival competition at the Oswegatchie Golf Challenge and the Oswegatchie Sand Bunker Challenge which run from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Both events are headquartered at Trafalgar Park. The Oswegatchie Golf Challenge sees golfers hitting tee shots across the Oswegatchie River to a green along the Maple City Trail in a closest to the pin competition. Prizes are awarded in the Mens, Women and Youth divisions and a special prize is awarded for a hole-in-one. Since the event was founded by Ronnie Driscoll two decades ago no one has ever aced the hole. In the Sandbunker Challenge golfers compete in a closest to the pin competition from a special constructed sandtrap. The final athletic event of the festival will be the second annual United Helpers Maple City Mile which will be run down Ford Street. The race begins at 10:30 a.m. and runners will compete before a huge crowd assembled along Ford Street for the Seaway Festival Parade which begins at 11 a.m.

Festival Features Diversity Of Music

By MATT MCALLISTER The 51st Annual Ogdensburg International Seaway Festival has an ambitious slate of musical performances scheduled this year, featuring bands ranging from youngsters like The Smugglers and The Acoustic Brothers to old favorites such as The Two Tones and the Seaway Valley Community Band. Last year, the turnout was great, said Kaila Perrault, festival volunteer. Were hoping for the same this year and feel we have something to offer for everyone. Kicking things off will be The Smugglers, a 6-member, Ogdensburg-based contingent that has been playing together for just over a year. Band members Lucas A. Powers, Jimmy Lawton, Zach OMalia, Trevor Dishaw, Danny Barkley and special guest Greg Bresett, a replacement for Jeff Kennedy, who is unavailable, will take to the stage July 23 in Morissette Park at 7 p.m. Mr. Powers, the lead guitarist, said listeners can expect our take on some classics, and that The Smugglers are a cover band with interests ranging from the Kinks and the Animals to Motown and Blues Brothers-style rock. Itll be our biggest show to date, he said, adding, Were excited to do it. All acts will be held in the Library Park gazebo unless otherwise noted. A full list of musical performances, dates and times is as follows: July 24 Julies Dance Studio, 1 to 3 p.m. Ogdensburg Dance Center, 4 to 5 p.m. The Northern Lights Orchestra, 7 to 9 p.m. The orchestra is an instrumental ensemble made up of musicians from Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties. It is composed of professional, semi-professional, and accomplished amateur musicians from throughout the tricounty region. July 25 Seaway Valley Community Band, 7 to 8 p.m. The Acoustic Brothers, 8 to 9 p.m. Waddingtons young and talented teen band offers a variety of older classic songs from the 50s, 60s, 70s, soft rock and some country. July 26 Kitchen Party, 6 to 9 p.m. This Celtic band from Mascouche, Quebec, Canada, has performed numerous times at Vinns Restaurant. They have had three successful tours of Scotland and regularly play in eastern Canada from Sarnia to Halifax. July 27 The Two Tones, 6:30 to 9 p.m. A husband and wife duet featuring music from the 50s and 60s, rock and roll, and old and new country. The Two Tones have been an opening act for Joey Dee & The Starlighters, The Crystals, Danny and The JRs, Bobby Lewis, and many more. July 28 NoizAftr9, 6:30 to 9 p.m. Hailing from Massena and Waddington and calling themselves the hardest working band in St. Lawrence County, they play classic rock, rock and metal from The Doors and Lynrd Skynrd to Tragically Hip and Blue Oyster Cult. July 29 Nik and The Nice Guys Totally 80s show, 8 to 9:45 p.m. This high-energy mainstream rock and roll band features 12 multi-talented musicians/performers which include female singer/dancers (Les Femmes de Nik) and a hot horn section (The Nicktones).

Tricycle races and lots of entertainment during the parade are among the fun-filled qualities of Ogdensburgs International Seaway Festival.

Firefighters Kids Games Popular Festival Event

By BENNY FAIRCHILD While the Seaway Festival may be best known for its parade, concerts and fireworks, younger members of the Ogdensburg community may very well tell you their favorite part of the festival is the annual firefighter kids games. Each year the games, sponsored by the Ogdensburg Firefighters Association, draw upwards of 100 children to compete in such classic games as the sack race, wheel barrel race, sprints and a hula hoop contest. Each race features prizes for first through third place, although in the end everyone ends up with a winner, Everybody usually ends up with something, said Assistant Chief Ronald D. Bouchard, who coordinates the games. Races are broken down into age divisions for children as young as 2 to 3 and even teenagers, ages 15 and up. Mr. Bouchard, who has been a member of the department for 22 years, said that the games predate his membership in the department. Im not sure how long theyve been going on, but Ive been in the department for 22 years and they were around before I was, he said. One of the newer additions to the event is a greased pole climb, where youngsters can take a stab at climbing a 20 foot long greased pole thats extended over the city docks out into the river. Should they successfully navigate the pole, theyre awarded with a $5 cash prize. Mr. Bouchard noted that the greased-pole climb is actually a combined effort, between the department and the Ogdensburg Volunteer Rescue Squad, who have divers on hand for the event, should someone need assistance getting back to dry land. The rescue squad has always been good about helping us with the greased pole and we appreciate that, he said. The department is also grateful to area businesses who donate food and drinks for the event, including Big Cheese Pizza, The Corner Deli, Jrecks Subs, Pepsi-Cola Ogdensburg Bottlers, Price Chopper, and Coca-Cola. While the games are a lot of hard work, Mr. Bouchard said that once they get started it doesnt take long for them to remember why they put the games on each year, Once we get going and the kids start screaming and laughing, we can see everyones having a great time and we know its worth it. In addition to food and prizes, Mr. Bouchard said that free helium balloons will also be available for anyone whos interested. The games will be held July 23 from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Greenbelt and as always, Mr. Bouchard said that everything is totally free. Thats the best part, he said.

Paul Austin of Ogdensburg, successfully made it to the end of the greased pole at last summers firefighter kids games held in the Greenbelt.

Area High School Bands Perform At Battle Of Bands

By BENNY FAIRCHILD Most parades include marching bands, but unless youre lucky enough to be seated near the judges stand theres a chance that you might not get to see your favorite band perform, but at the Seaway Festivals Battle of the Bands, everyone is guaranteed to see their favorite bands entire performance. The Battle of the Bands will be held on the football field at Ogdensburg Free Academy on July 24 at 7 p.m. Admission to the battle is just $2. When the Blue Devils from Ogdensburg Free Academy take the field they'll be performing a Lady Gaga-themed show including excerpts from "Bad Romance," "Poker Face" and "Just Dance." They will be led by drum major Tori Peabody. This summer the band is directed by Richard Patton, a student at the Crane School of Music in Potsdam, who will be earning his master's degree in performance and education later this summer. The Heuvelton Central School Marching Bulldogs are setting sail with a medley of songs from "The Pirates of the Caribbean" film series. Director Megan Wattie said the show will include a drumline special feature showcasing Jenna Lashua, Will Tennant, Courtney Young, Shelby Mack, Kedan Mack, Zed Crayford and Ethan Tyo. The band will again be led by drum majorette Abbey Basford. The Golden Knights Marching Band from Lisbon Central School will be taking paradegoers back in time with their tribute to the Beatles. Director Glenn Roberts said the show will include excerpts from "Hold Your Hand," "She Loves You," "Penny Lane," and "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." This year the band will be led by drum major Gabby Walker. Mr. Roberts said their show also includes solos from Kristopher Newtown on the trombone and Matthew Snyder on the baritone saxophone. The Green Rockets from Morristown Central School will be blasting off to a "galaxy far, far away" with a "Star Wars"-themed show complete with characters from the inconic film series. Morristown will be led by drum major Samantha Hall. The show will include an alto saxophone solo by Amanda Bertrand and a woodwinds ensemble made up of Karissa Bertrand on piccolo, Mackenzie Barse on flute, Kurstyn Macaulay on clarinet, Miss Bertrand on alto saxophone and Bailey Holmes on baritone saxophone. Edwards-Knox will be performing a medley of classic TV theme songs, including "Hawaii 5-0" and "The Magnificent Seven." They will be led by drum major Brianna Kroniser. Director Jillian Fenton said that this year's show does not include any soloists or special features. The Battle of the Bands is also unique in that it honors drum majorettes, color guards, flag lines, solosits, ensembles and individual sections, even offering a spirit award that goes to the evenings most enthusiastic band.

The Lisbon Golden Knights color guard is shown performing at last years Battle of the Bands competition at Ogdensburg Free Academy during the Seaway Festival.

Alexa Trimm, Ogdensburg, is shown performing at last years Seaway Festival Karaoke Contest held in the auditorium at Ogdensburg Free Academy. This years contest will be held July 26 at 6 p.m. at OFA.
