Freedom One: We Would Walk 160 miles and We Would Walk 100 More
From Article: Norwich Bulletin Author: Emily Grove History lovers re-create march through region
Trek follows route taken by Revolutionary War soldiers

Dressed as a Revolutionary War soldier, Laura Mack led the contingent of seven Tuesday along Route 14 in Plainfield. Do you think if we walked fast enough we could make that speedometer go off? Mack, of Vermont, asked her fellow marchers as they neared the Plainfield Police Departments speed trailer. The answer was no. To celebrate and draw attention to the Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route, the nonprofit historian organization The Marchers will travel the 680-mile route during the next four months. Designated as a National Historic Trail in 2009, the route is a series of encampments and roads used by U.S. Continental Army troops under George Washington and French troops under Jean-Baptiste de Rochambeau during their march from Newport, R.I., to Yorktown, Va., in 1781. Dave Fagerberg, an operations manager for the march, said The Marchers first traveled the route in 2006 to mark the 225th anniversary. This year they are hitting the road again to raise awareness about the trail with a special focus on young people. That they can be the next stewards of the trail, Fagerberg, of Kansas, said. 4-month trek Throughout the journey, which started Saturday in Providence and will finish Oct. 19, members of The Marchers will be joined by three, six-member teams of the Americorps National Civilian Community Corps. The six members traveling through the region Tuesday came from Vermont, Minnesota, Oregon and several places in between, and ranged in age from 20 to 24.

The group started at Plainfield Central School and marched through Canterbury and into Scotland, where they lunched and set up camp. They then continued their march to Windham before returning to Scotland to camp Tuesday night, marching a total of 14 miles during the day. Fagerberg said troop members try to follow the French army diaries as closely as they can to determine how far they travel each day and where they camp. The group camps in period tents, but eats modern-day foods and uses some modern-day conveniences, such as cellphones, Global Positioning System (GPS) devices and maps. For David Pergamit, of Oregon, and Daniel Clesowich, a Lebanon native now living in Willimantic, reading the diaries has shown how much they dont match up to the real soldiers. Pergamit said the group is soft by comparison, as the diaries detail the treks as not being difficult and, as Clesowich points out, the real soldiers did it while carrying 60-pound packs, a burden the modern-day group doesnt have.

Alumni Spotlight: Tara Johnston

Tara Johnston, served as a Corps Member in Class XVI at the Atlantic Region. Johnston served as a Corps Member on Raven 4 and recently marching into the Revolutionary camp of Freedom One, where they were able to hear about Life After AmeriCorps. How did you find out about AmeriCorps NCCC? When I first heard about AmeriCorps NCCC I was in Thailand volunteering with an organization Cross Cultural Solutions. One of the other volunteers I was living with was starting his year in NCCC when he went back home. When I got home I did some research on AmeriCorps and knew NCCC was an experience that I had to be a part of. What was the best part of your year? I have to say the best part of my year in AmeriCorps NCCC was being a part of the Summer of Service Program. I had the opportunity to be a Crew Leader working with the youth from the Perryville Police Outreach Program, leading them in service projects, being a mentor, tutor, and friend. As well as becoming a part of the community where the NCCC Atlantic Region campus is located for the summer. Going camping with them was definitely a highlight of the year. Also, though challenging at the time, working with the youth from the Choice Program in Baltimore is something I will never forget. I learned a lot about myself and definitely developed on my leadership style. Working with those youth was probably the most challenging part of my year in NCCC and by far the best experience I had. I think about my crew members all the time and hope the very best for all of them.

Johnston with her Summer of Service Crew

What are your current plans? Currently I am trying to save up as much money as possible for my next adventure by working a couple of part time jobs. Delivering parts for a Jeep dealership in the morning and working for the DDS in the afternoon/evening providing in home care for a boy with autism. Come August I will be moving to Philadelphia to start another year of service with City Year Greater Philadelphia. City Year is an AmeriCorps affiliated program that works in school systems in cities throughout the country focusing on keeping students in school and on track by mentoring, tutoring, and being a positive role model. They also lead programs which engage teams of youth in service projects throughout the community. So if you had a great year in NCCC but keep saying to yourself you wish you got the chance to work with youth more than I suggest you look into City Year. To AmeriCorps NCCC Class XVII: Take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way. Dont let anybody else influence your decisions or opinions. If you have an idea, run with it! moment to the fullest! Even if you are super tired and feel like you couldnt possibly go on; you will survive. Have the most fun you possibly can and make lasting friendships because once it is over you will miss it. AND STAY ON TOP OF YOUR LAA PLANS. Apply to everything and anything you may be interested in doing after NCCC. HAVE A PLAN whether it is school, a job, a road trip, or another volunteer adventure. Getting home from AmeriCorps and not knowing what you are doing next is stressful! SHOUT OUT to all of you TLs and CMs from class XVI wish I could be there with you. Shout out to Denard... I miss our talks. Special shout out to Class XVI Raven Fource Chris Quirk (you jerk), Jules, Laura, and even you Rod. KJ stay awesome.
