Unit Title: Pythagorean Theorem

Essential Question(s): How are right triangles a part of daily life? How can we find the length of something without directly measuring it? Lesson Title/Number Lesson Question (s) Pythagorean Theorem Lesson 1 (Direct Instruction) How do you label the parts of a right triangle? How do you use the Pythagorean Theorem to determine the length of the unknown side? 7.G.5 Identify the right angle, hypotenuse, and legs of a right triangle 7.G.8 Use the Pythagorean Theorem to determine the unknown length of a side of a right triangle

State Standards and Performance Indicators

Lesson Objectives
(Blooms Taxonomy)

1. Students will be able to identify the right angle, hypotenuse, and legs of a right triangle. 2. Students will be able to use the Pythagorean Theorem to determine the unknown length of a side of a right triangle. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------1. Evidence that students have achieved objective # 1 will come from a worksheet that the students will complete involving the labeling of right angles, hypotenuses, and legs of right triangles. 2. Evidence that students have achieved objective # 2 will come from in class practice problems and homework problems.

---------------------Acceptable Evidence

Bell Ringer and Prior Knowledge Tap

The students will be shown a real world application problem involving the Pythagorean Theorem on a PowerPoint. The teacher will explain that they will be learning about the Pythagorean Theorem which will help them solve the problem. The students will come back to the problem at the end of the lesson. (Direct Instruction-Introduction) (RBIS-setting objectives) ________________________________________________________ 1. The teacher will hand out the guided notes/practice worksheet. The teacher will show a right triangle and explain how to determine which sides are the legs versus the hypotenuse and how to locate the right angle. The students will follow along while filling in the blanks on their guided note sheet. (Auditory) (RBISNote taking) 2. The students will then work on the practice problems of multiple right triangles varying in size and direction. The students will complete the worksheet independently while the teacher moves around the classroom to check for understanding and answer any questions. (RBIS-homework and practice) 3. The teacher will show a right triangle with the sides labeled a, b, and c (c being the hypotenuse). The teacher will introduce the Pythagorean Theorem and show how each side of the triangle matches up with the corresponding letter in the formula. The students will follow along with their guided notes and fill in the blanks. (Auditory) (Direct Instruction-Development) 4. The teacher will do 2-4 example problems of solving for the unknown side of the right triangle. At least one problem will have a leg as the unknown side and at least one problem will have the hypotenuse as the unknown side. 5. The teacher will display a practice problem on the board and students will have a few minutes to solve the problem on their individual white boards. The students will then hold their boards up and the teacher will check answers for understanding. This will be repeated for 3-5 practice problems. (Kinesthetic) (Direct Instruction-Guided Practice)

_______________ Procedure
Teacher input, development, instructional method(s), modeling, guided practice, independent practice, and/or activities

*Accommodations for learning modalities are required. Labelvisual, auditory, and kinesthetic

Checks for Understanding

1. The teacher will check for understanding while the students are working on their Triangle worksheet. The teacher will move around the room to observe the students work. These will not be collected and the students will keep them in their binder/notebook as their notes for the day. (Content) 2. After explaining the directions for the white board activity, the teacher will check for understanding by asking two different students to repeat the directions. (Directions) 3. The teacher will check for understanding by observing the work and answers that the students show on the practice problems during the white board activity. (Content) 4. The teacher will check for understanding by looking over the exit slips that the teacher collected at the end of class. (Content) 5. The teacher will check for understanding by looking at the homework that the students complete. (Content) 1. The students will complete a worksheet on labeling the parts of a right triangle. (Formative) 2. The students will reveal their work and answers on the white boards. (Formative) 3. The students will complete a problem as an exit slip. (Formative) 4. The students will have practice problems for homework. The teacher will evaluate the homework the next day and answer any questions. (Formative) (Direct Instruction-Independent Practice and Evaluation and Review)

Assessment

Closure

The teacher will give a brief review of how the Pythagorean Theorem helps solve for the lengths of right triangles. As an exit slip, the students will complete the real life application problem that was given at the beginning of class. (Direct Instruction-Closure)

Right Triangles and the Pythagorean Theorem

The _________________ of a right triangle is the side opposite of the right angle. The other two sides are the ______________. Label the legs, hypotenuses, and right angles of the following triangles.

The Pythagorean Theorem is used to find the length of one of the sides of a right triangle when you are given the other two sides. The Pythagorean Theorem is as follows; where a and b are the lengths of the _______ and c is the length of the ____________________.

a2 + b2 = c2
Example: We can use the Pythagorean Theorem to find c.

a2 + b2 = c2
a=3 c=?

b=4

32 + ___2 = c2 ___+ 16 = c2 25 = c2 ____ = c 5=c

Use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the length of the missing leg of a right triangle that has a hypotenuse of 18 and a leg of 11. Draw the triangle and label the right angle, and lengths of the sides.

Exit Slip Suppose we want to buy an entertainment center, but it only holds

enough room in the cubicle for a 27-inch TV set. We know that the length of out TV is 16 inches and the height of our TV is 12 inches. Will our TV be able to fit into the cubicle? (Note: TVs are measured by the length of their diagonal.)
