What is the IEEE 43-2000? In March 2000, the IEEE-SA Standards Board approved a revision of IEEE Std 43-1974 by the Electric Machinery Committee of the IEEE Power Engineering Society. This revision is IEEE Std 43-2000, the IEEE Recommended Practice for Testing Insulation Resistance of Rotating Machinery. Following is a brief summary of the highlights of IEEE Standard 43-2000:
I
Test voltages up to 10 kV are recommended for windings rated greater than 12 kV. Both the insulation resistance and the polarization index test are recommended. Test results should be compared to historical values to identify changes. In lieu of historical records, minimum acceptable values (based on the type of equipment) for both tests are indicated. Depending on the machine rating, the readings for one or both tests should exceed the minimum acceptable values. If the readings are below the minimum acceptable values, the winding is not recommended for an over-voltage test or for operation.

Ground testing using the ART method is more convenient and reduces testing time.
The new Model DET3TC employs a special current clamp and built-in microprocessor to measure and calculate the ground resistance (strictly in accordance with Fall of Potential and supported by IEEE Standard 81), without disconnected the utility connection. A nagging problem with traditional ground testing has been the requirement to disconnect the utility ground. Using the ART (Attached Rod Technique) method you can reliably measure a grounding electrode while still connected. This method enables local grounds to be tested without lifting the utility connection yet with the ease, reliability and confidence of a separate commissioning test. How Does It Work? The ART method solves the problem by utilizing the following technique. A current clamp is connected below the point of separation of the parallel test currents. It then measures only the current flowing through the test ground, not that going back through the utility. This current value is then used by the built-in microprocessor in the instrument to calculate ground resistance, strictly in accordance with Fall of Potential and supported by IEEE Standard 81. Thats why using the new ART ground testing method is much more convenient and significantly reduces your testing time by as much as 40%! For complete details view our ART Testing Application Guide at www.megger.com/det.

Simply clamp around the conductor or stake/rod and measure the resistance to ground quickly and accurately. The DET10C and 20C can be used to measure earth/ground resistance in multiple loop installations without disconnecting the earth or ground, allowing quick and easy testing in total safety. These clamp-on testers feature improved ground resistance ranges from 0.025 m to 1550 m and ground leakage current from 0.2 mA to 35 A. The units are rugged, compact and have configurable audible alarms. They feature auto shutdown (which is also configurable), data storage and self calibration on power-up, and are supplied with a calibration loop all contained in a rugged carry case. The DET20C also comes with a RS232 interface cable and is compatible with Megger Download Manager Software (included) allowing further analysis and storage of data.
