LS-10 crib sheet!

Olympus LS10 The LS-10 is a digital audio recorder that stores its data on 2 GB of internal ash memory (the same as an iPod shufe). Thats about three hours of recording time. Since there arent moving parts its small and pretty rugged. It uses two AA batteries for power; these should already be in it when you get your recording kit from the equipment room. Lets take a look at this device: Like most digital recorders, theres a pair of built-in microphones for stereo recording in the eld. Careful, though theyre very susceptible to wind noise, even with the foam windscreens attached! Most of the time youll want to use your hand-held mic, especially for interviews.

Under the PCM category there are a variety of choices. Truthfully, any of these will result in a swell recording. Consider what software youll be using to edit your audio. Final Cut Pro works better with audio recorded at a sampling rate of 48kHz because that's the typical rate for video. Pro Tools will accommodate any sampling rate and bit43 depth just make sure your Pro Tools session is set up to match what you recorded. FYI 44.1kHz/ 16bit will give you the most recording time, and its the standard for audio CDs. Make your selection with the the nav. wheel and press OK to conrm. Now were ready to record. The microphone cord goes into the tiny MIC jack on the right side. Leave the LOW CUT switch on OFF and the MIC SENSE set to HIGH (not LOW as it is here.) If you nd your record levels are too high even with the REC LEVEL control turned almost down to 0, then (and only then) should you switch to the LOW setting. This will only happen in the 44 very loudest of situations, however. For normal interviews always set the MIC SENSE to HIGH. Plug your headphones into the EAR jack on the left side of the recorder. The volume control there is for the headphone volume only not the record level. Always wear your headphones. To begin recording press the REC button twice. The rst press will cause the REC button to ash and youll hear audio in the headphones. This is standby mode, and you can use it to set recording levels. But YOURE NOT RECORDING UNTIL YOU PRESS A SECOND TIME. When you do, the REC button will stop ashing and the time display will begin counting up from 00:00. Thats how you know youre recording.

As youre recording, keep an eye on your levels. Remember: the volume in your headphones has nothing to do with the level of the audio youre recording. Adjust recording level with the REC LEVEL thumbwheel on the right side of the recorder. Make sure the MIC SENSE is set to HIGH. Try to keep your levels peaking around -6 on the display and youll be ne. If your level gets too high, the PEAK light above the display will ash. Lower the recording level with the REC LEVEL thumbwheel. Try to glance at the display frequently as youre recording to check levels. When youre done recording, press STOP. Your recording will be saved to Folder A on the LS-10. The next step is to get it off the recorder and onto the workstation.
