Happy Birthday is in F and Hortense has been out shopping

It is almost gratifying to hear people ask after Hortense, she who hovers in the nether recesses of the room, acquiver with excitement at the thought of yet another jam session; or not, as the case may be. She would not, as it turns out, have been disappointed with Sunday's shenanigans at all, leavened as it was with the 76th celebration of Alan's birth. (pictured right) There was an afternoon of fine music making, aural delights, wild jazz and blues, artistic creativity of the highest order etc etc. or she could have gone to the Leinster Jam Session instead, and heard the usual suspects mangling the usual tunes in the usual way, whilst the rest of us gossiped maliciously, spread doubtful rumours and sipped the occasional lunatic soup by way of diversion. The Captain, as ever, in the chair and blowing up a storm on sax, Frank on bass, Brian on guitar, Keef giving Peter some curry on 66 Gold Street, saxaphone, the Luxmoore Collingwood getting into his stride on For dinner bookings piano with the smoothest phone combo of the session 9417 5720 (piano, bass, drums, sax), www.leinsterarms.com.au Angie singing as (contd p2)

sweet as ever, and Brad playing a neat set on drums, before we turfed him off in favour of the Birthday Boy.

Al "Papa" Jazz is, as we are slowly realising, a natural on drums - you can tell he has never had a lesson in his life. In fact he could play drums just as well in his sleep. . It seems like only yesterday that he discovered that drumsticks come in pairs. It is indeed a rare talent that takes seventy six years to reach this level of See ya at the jam. competence.

your name, it is because you are young, good looking and talented, and the rest of us are jealous. If you weren't there, then we were probably talking about you anyway. But I digress. Hortense spent Sunday furniture shopping. (ah yes, that was the point I was getting to), so she may not have been at the Leinster after all. Intrigued by an ad that said all furniture was 50% off, and "Hurry!!! at this price the stock won't last long!" she rushed out and bought a sofa. Truth in advertising: the legs fell off on Monday morning.

All in all, this was The Leinster Arms at You can read more of this rubbish at its finest: packed to the gills and rocking. www.jazzidiot.blogspot.com If you were there, and I haven't mentioned Ted

. . . what a fabulous session on Sunday! The place was packed . . . Marg and Al would like to thank all those who showed up last Sunday to help celebrate Alan's birthday the lad had a fabulous time, was thoroughly spoilt by everyone and loved every minute of it!!

Friday Night
Big turn out of Jammers on Friday night at the Leinster Arms in Collingwood. It did not seem all that busy at first but behind the scenes there was plenty of activity as repairs were being made to get the keyboard to play. Alls well that ends well as Glen completed the repairs to get the show on the road. We kicked off with Frank soloing on guitar while others waited for the keyboard repairs. Pretty soon Col was saxophoning, Alan on drums, Buddy singing, Frank on bass and I was on keys. Combinations varied enormously but included Tim on alto (Lisa was listening), Ray on guitar, Kay singing, Annie more drumming than singing, Dario, Ted on piano, Ivan on bass, Mark on piano, Taariq on everything and a bit later Shigeo, on accoustic amplified guitar. Other regulars included Marg, Denise, Mark and Maurizio (listening rather than playing guitar) and Maria (note the shoes!). 2

One of the nights special moments included a bass solo from Ivan accompanied by Glen on hi-hat. We also welcomed a return visit by Mark from Wollongong who brought some friends and played piano for us. He was even brave enough to take some of the guys through So What from the Miles Davis album, Kind of Blue. Mark is actually a classical music composer who now plays jazz for fun. A previous teacher of his is the well known Judy Bailey. Rob

The Jam Sessions

The jams feature a blend of accomplished musicians and those beginning their jamming careers. A great opportunity to drop in, meet other musicians, blow your heart out on your favourite tune or kick back and listen in. The music may be good, bad or bebop, swing, blues, latin or lousy anything can happen and often does! All are welcome. Bring charts, instruments, voices.

From the editor

Last week I wrote You could tell whenever the band was playing, because the audience would be outside on the sidewalk, and then when the intermission came, theyd go into the club for a drink. Questions: Who was playing? Where? When? this was Ornette Colemans debut at the Hillcrest Club in Los Angeles in 1958 Feedback or comments can be emailed to melbournejazzjammers@gmail.com Rob McCue 7 July 2011
