Time: 3hours Max. Marks:60

Answer any FIVE questions

All questions carry equal marks
---

1. Develop a model to represent the flow behavior in catalytic

fluidized bed reactor using the tracer information data resulted as
(1 − Fθ ) = eb ( a−θ ) . Discuss on volume contributions of mixed flow and
plug flows for b=1.5.

2. Find the expression for macro fluid conversion of second order

reaction conducted in two equal sized ideal mixed flow reactors in
series. If the conversion is 99% for the micro fluid behavior, what
is it for the present macro fluid flow?

3. A two stage fluidized bed reactor used to treat solids, with one
stage is twice the size of the other and the gas environment will be
the same in both stages. To obtain a higher conversion which
stage should come first?

4. Immiscible A and B are introduced into a 10 liter batch reactor,

after 1 hour conversion of A is 98%. Find rate constant for the
1 dN A
reaction A+B → R; − = kC ACB ; C A0 = 1 mole/lit; VA = 6 liters;
V dt
CB0 = 2 mole/liter; VB = 4 liters.

5.a) The solid catalyzed decomposition of gaseous A proceeds as A → R,

-rA = k3CA2. 65% conversion is obtained a tubular reactor packed
with 2 liters of catalyst and is fed with 2m3/hr of pure A at 3000 C
and 20 atm. To treat 100m3/hr of feed gases at 40 atm, and 3000
C, containing 60% of A with diluents to obtain 85% conversion of
A. Find the size of the reactor required.
b) Write on the experimental methods to find the deactivation kinetics
in a batch catalytic reactor with a batch of fluid used.

6. Derive the expression for non-iosthermal internal effectiveness

factor and discuss the effect of Arrhenius number and the heat of
reaction parameters.

7. Diffusion rates obtained on isobutene in isobutene-helium system,

through a pelleted cylinder (1/8 '' × 1/8 '' ) of alumina at 750 mm Hg
total pressure and 250C with the diffusion direction parallel to
central axis of pellet. The experimental results gave
{( N A )e RT ∆r}/{DAB Pt ( y2 − y1 )} = -0.023, surface area of pellet = 76
m2/g macro-porosity = 0.18, macro-pore radius=4800A0, micro-
porosity = 0.34, micro-pore radius = 84 A0, pure isobutene is used
for the studies. Calculate the experimental effective diffusivity and
what macro pore tortuosity factor is indicated by the data: also
calculate the macropore tortuosity factor from random pore model.

8. The first order reversible reaction with pure A takes place at 300K
as A ⇔ R in a 90 liter mixed flow reactor for 60% conversion of A.
What should be the volume of reactor for the same feed rate and
conversion but with operation at 400K? Also make a plot to
determine the adiabatic equilibrium temperature and conversion in
the reactor at 300K.
k = 103 exp(-4800/RT); K = 10 at 300K; ∆CP = (CPR − CPA ) = 5
cal/(mol K); ∆H r = -3000 cal/mole at 3000C.
