PART I: GENERAL INFORMATION

DESCRIPTION OF TOWN
- SHORT HISTORY AND LOCATION Porto is located in Northern Portugal, on the north bank of the Douro River. It is the second largest city in the country, in an urban area with more than 1.3 million inhabitants. Four main bridges (Arrbida, Freixo, Luiz I and Infante) and two railway bridges (S. Joo and D. Maria the latter, considered an historical monument, is no longer operational) connect Porto to Vila Nova de Gaia on the other bank. It is known as the Granite City for its architecture, with churches and buildings in the historic centre made of granite and iron. Portos settlement dates back to pre-historical times, having since been inhabited by Romans, Iberians, Celts, Swabians, Visigoths and Moors (although the Moorish influence is greater in the South). In national history, Porto has always fought for its independence and love for freedom. Liberalism, liberty and patriotism are some of the values that have always been dear to the inhabitants of Porto. The name tripeiros, for which the inhabitants of Porto are known, arises from one such moment of patriotism: in the 15th Century, all the higher-quality cuts of meat were supplied to the fleets setting sail from Porto, while the local population were left with only by-products, such as tripe. This is the origin of one of the most traditional dishes of the local cuisine, tripas moda do Porto. With a strong, dynamic bourgeoisie since the 18th century, to which the city owes the epitaph of City of Work, Porto has always been a city of trade. Its main export product is Port wine, which enabled the citys gradual renovation: new roads and buildings were built, accounting for the prosperity of the bourgeoisie of the time. The citys historical wealth can be found in the labyrinth of narrow, winding streets of medieval times and in its monuments (the Cathedral, the "Palcio da Bolsa", as well as several churches, museums and private houses). In 1996 UNESCO classified Porto as a World Heritage Site. This decision was largely influenced by the citys undeniable historical and architectural wealth, its beauty and regular investments in urban and social renovation, especially in the oldest areas. Several universities, art academies, conservatories, museums and art galleries bear witness to the citys cultural and social vitality. In 2001, Porto shared the European Capital of Culture with Rotterdam. As a result, major projects have been implemented aimed at boosting cultural dynamics and continuing Portos urban renovation.

- MAIN LOCAL/CULTURAL EVENTS There are several and diverse attractions to appreciate in Porto: monuments, museums, churches, bridges, cellars, markets, fairs, green spaces, festivities and popular celebrations. Besides the University museums, there are others (regional or national) throughout the city. Some are free, others offer discounts for students or are free on certain days of a week. Particularly noteworthy among Portos museums is the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, inaugurated in 1999. Designed by the renowned Portuguese architect Siza Vieira (who was also responsible for designing the U.Portos Faculty of Architecture), it is dedicated to Portuguese and international Contemporary Art, having broadened significantly the artistic programmes of the Fundao de Serralves. Soares dos Reis National Museum, located in Palcio das Carrancas, a neoclassical building, is also a reference, dedicated particularly to works of art from the 19th and 20th centuries. Over the last few years the number of art galleries has also increased, featuring both national and international works of art. Concentrated in Rua de Miguel Bombarda, the area has become a cosmopolitan,

bohemian, creative and stimulating feature in the citys cultural life. Porto has several parks and gardens, among which the following are worth visiting: the city park (parque da cidade), the gardens of Casa de Serralves and the gardens of Palcio de Cristal. The Porto airport is called Aeroporto Internacional Francisco S Carneiro - OPO (+351 22 943 24 00). It is located about 11 km north of the city centre. The Portuguese main air carrier is TAP Portugal (707 205 700), with offices in the main cities it flies to. PGA - Portuglia Airlines (+351 218 938 070 or 707 789 090) also grants connections by air to many other cities. Besides, there are an increasing number of other international air carriers flying to Portugal including low-cost airlines. You can go from the airport to the city centre by light-rail (Metro), bus, taxi or rent a car.

Metro The Metro is a good option to get to the city centre. The Violet Line connects the airport to the city centre and interfaces with Railway Stations. Bus There are three regular STCP bus lines from the airport to the city centre: 601, 602 and 604. In this case the ticket costs 1,50 EUR and can only be used for that trip.

Taxis Taxi services are available at the airport. All taxis are equipped with a taximeter, and the fare charged is limited to the amount displayed on the meter. A surcharge of 20% is applied on the following periods: weekends and public holidays; working days between 09.00 p.m. and 06.00 a.m. (surcharge automatically calculated by the taximeter). Motorway toll charges are to be paid by the passenger. The request of this service via taxi central dispatch or by telephone can have an additional charge of 0,80. A fee of 1,60 will be charged for luggage exceeding 55cm x 35cm x 20cm. Transporting cribs, prams and wheelchairs is free of charge. Any tipping is left to the passenger's discretion. The price of a taxi journey is based on four passengers. Passenger must be given a receipt: it is compulsory.

Rent-a-car There are several rent-a-car services at the airport. To rent one of these cars, you just have to go to the respective rent-a-car counter or contact your travel agency in advance.

BY LAND You can also get to Porto by bus, train or car. New roads are constantly being built which allow for easier access to the main cities in the country. There are 3 motorways leaving from Porto: to Lisbon (A1); to Minho (A3); and to Trs-os-Montes (A4). There is also a motorway connecting Porto to Valena (IC1/A28). A vast network of buses connects Porto to several other European cities. The main bus companies are Rede Nacional de Expressos, and InterNorte, in Praa da Galiza (+351 22 605 24 20) - this company has bus connections to most European capitals, through connections to Paris. There are also several other bus companies connecting Porto to the North (Rua Alfredo Magalhes), to the South (Rua Alexandre Herculano) and to many other destinations (Campo 24 de Agosto, in Central Shopping). You can also get to Porto by train from about anywhere in Europe, with CP, which has connections mainly through Paris. Porto has 2 main railway stations: Estao de Campanh (which provides international connections and connections to Lisbon, Douro and Minho); Estao de S. Bento (which provides connections to Galicia, Douro and Minho, as well as to Aveiro and Coimbra). CP has a Call Centre for reservations: telephone number is 808 208 208 (or +351 223 394 040).

- TRANSPORT IN TOWN (BRIEF INFORMATION ON THE MAIN MEANS OF TRANSPORT AVAILABLE) The main means of transport in the city are the bus (STCP) and the Metro (Metro do Porto). The best way to get around the city is with an Andante travelcard, which permits travel throughout the Porto Metropolitan Area, using the Metro, the STCP buses or the CP suburban trains. As EILC students are bound to stay in Porto for about 4 weeks, a monthly ANDANTE travel card or pass is highly recommended. When requesting the pass, you have to decide on the area where you are going to travel. For example, a trip from Avenida dos Aliados, in the city centre, to Plo Universitrio, in Asprela, requires only a Z2 ticket. However, a trip from Cmara de Gaia to Plo Universitrio requires a Z3 ticket. The monthly pass requires the purchase of the Andante Gold card, which costs 5,00 EUR. The cost of the monthly pass for Z2 is 12,25 EUR and for Z3, 15,90 EUR. There are presently five metro lines: Line A (Estdio do Drago Senhor de Matosinhos), Line B (Estdio do Drago Pvoa do Varzim) and Line C (Estdio do Drago ISMAI), Line D (Hospital de S. Joo D. Joo II (Gaia)) and Line E (Estdio do Drago Airport). BUS A bus ticket to travel within the city costs 1,85 EUR (if bought in advance, valid for two trips) or 1,50 EUR (if bought on the bus, in this case, valid for only one trip). There is also a daily ticket (which is valid until midnight on the day it is used for the first time), which costs 5,00 EUR, and a 3-day ticket, which costs 11,00 EUR. Both tickets are valid for an unlimited number of trips in the partner companies, including STCP, Metro do Porto and CP (within the city area).

SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE ORGANISING INSTITUTION

The Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto, with over 3000 students, offers 13 undergraduate courses (licenciatura), 30 Masters courses (mestrado) and 18 doctoral courses (doutoramento) in the following areas: Archaeology, Information Science, Communication Sciences, Language Sciences, Teaching Methodology, Cultural Studies, Philosophy, Geography, History, History of Art, Classical and Modern Languages, Literature, Museology, Portuguese as a Foreign Language, International Relations, Sociology, Translation Studies and Tourism. Some of these courses are taught jointly with other Faculties of the University of Porto and/or other universities. Apart from the degrees offered, the Faculty also provides a wide variety of vocational training courses as well as open courses (including a range of language programmes, from Arabic, Chinese and Japanese to Hungarian, Polish and Persian). Most of the vocational training courses are certified by the Portuguese Pedagogical and Scientific Council for In-Service Training and award credits for career development. Based on an exchange of knowledge and expertise, the courses are designed to encourage the production of scientific knowledge and provide students with the professional skills they will require to enter the labour market and to pursue endeavours in entrepreneurship. A number of the masters courses have a professional training component that includes internships in companies or schools, an excellent opportunity for students to gain experience in a work environment and consequently fulfil their goals of educational excellence. The Facultys teaching staff is highly qualified with almost all its members hold a doctoral degree. They are vastly prolific in scientific production and have significant international experience in their areas of research and teaching. Both teaching staff and PhD and masters students are involved in a number of on-going national and international research projects as part of the activities of R&D Units accredited and financed by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology. The Faculty is also involved in student and teaching staff exchange programmes, namely through cooperation agreements with renowned foreign institutions, particularly with European and Brazilian universities. The Facultys Central Library holds close to 300.000 volumes, which are available in its digital catalogue, and is extensively used by the its students, as well as students from other faculties and universities. It also provides specialized international databases, and readers can consult a wide range of electronic publications and journals. Additionally, the Digital Library provides users with full text access to the Facultys publications.

ACCOMMODATION

- SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE ACCOMMODATION OFFERED (HOTEL, APARTMENTS, STUDENT HALLS, OTHERS; IF THERE ARE COOKING FACILITIES) AND ON THE RENT TO BE PAID PER WEEK In practical terms, students can opt to stay in University halls of residence, in a flat (sharing it with other students) or in a room in a family home. The SASUP Servios de Aco Social da Universidade do Porto (Social Service of the University of Porto www.sas.up.pt) provide accommodation in Halls of Residence to some mobility students in 5 Halls of Residence. We can help you with this, but they are very scarce considering the needs arising from the increase of incoming flows and we cannot guarantee that you will get this type of accommodation. Accommodation of mobility students in halls of residence is co-financed. Therefore, in the academic year 2010/2011 the rent per month is about 150,00 EUR and includes housekeeping and linen (which students do not need to bring with them). All students requesting accommodation in Halls of Residence are sent information regarding the status of their request. Requests are processed on a "first-come, first-served" basis, after their acceptance at the EILC course. Therefore, the sooner we receive the application, the more chances you stand of getting accommodation in a Hall of Residence. Students provided with accommodation in Halls of Residence should keep us informed on the date and time of their arrival. Further to students requests we can also seek to provide students with information on private accommodation throughout the city. To that purpose, the international office manages an up-to-date database with contact details offering flats, houses and rooms for rent. This database is provided to all students who may be interested, as well as to students who asked (but were not awarded) accommodation in the Halls of Residence. Therefore, by means of this database, students may establish direct contact with several accommodation offers and therefore select the opportunities that suit them best. It is nowadays more common to rent a flat and share it with other students. This is usually more comfortable, since it allows the students more freedom and flexibility, especially in terms of timetables. A possible alternative is that you stay for a few days at a youth hostel or at a hotel and find suitable accommodation after your arrival. It's quite common to find flats for rent, and the prices vary according to the location or the conditions being offered. In Porto the Youth Hostel is located in Rua Paulo da Gama, 551 4169-006. Reservations can be made by phone (+351 22 617 72 57) or e-mail (porto@movijovem.pt). When booking accommodation in family homes and flats, students are sometimes asked to pay two months rent in advance. Sometimes landlords only rent a flat or a room after they speak to the students this being one of the reasons why we only provide students with the contact details of the landlords, so that they can make a pre-booking. Students who booked accommodation in a flat or in a family home should contact the landlord prior to their arrival so as to confirm the booking

MEALS

- SHORT DESCRIPTION ON THE SERVICES OFFERED (UNIVERSITY CANTEENS, RESTAURANTS, BARS, OTHERS) The University canteens offer inexpensive meals from Mondays to Sundays from 12.00 noon - 02.00 p.m. and from 06.30 08.30 p.m. The cost per meal is around 2,15 (U.Porto students) / 3,30 (others). There are also university snack-bars for light meals. Porto is known for its cuisine and students will easily find snack-bars/restaurants where they can enjoy a pleasant inexpensive meal. There are many restaurants (from cheap to expensive) both in the city and on its outskirts. Besides many restaurants (for all prices), there are also coffee shops and snack-bars that prepare light meals and snacks at a lower price (5,00 to 10,00 ). For all these reasons, going out for a meal is very common in

Portugal. Restaurants are usually open as follows: 12.00 02.30 p.m.; 19.00 12.00 p.m.. However, there are restaurants and bars open until 02.00 or even 04.00 a.m. The most typical dishes are: Tripas Moda do Porto, Cabrito Assado, Bacalhau Z do Pipo (codfish), Bacalhau com Natas (codfish), Sarrabulho Portuense, Peixe com Todos, Tripas Enfarinhadas, Arroz de Frango, Aletria, Arroz Doce, among many others. Another speciality is the traditional Francesinha. It is not then a surprise that some of the restaurants in Porto are experts in this dish.

EXTRA MURAL ACTIVITIES

- SITE VISITS EXTRA-MURAL ACTIVITIES The U.Porto is not limited to academic life. The students custom of gathering in cafs, especially downtown and near the oldest Faculties, and the organization of cultural and social events are quite old traditions. Academic traditions are also very old, especially as far as the reception of first-year students and student parades are concerned. In the meantime other activities have been introduced, some more traditional than others, which were integrated in Queima das Fitas. Over the last few years several student groups have been created in all schools of the University, carrying out

several original activities. Student unions in Porto are driving forces of student life. Most Faculties have student groups, which carry out activities such as modelling, diving, photography, folklore, mountaineering, martial arts, etc. There are also groups that promote computer training courses. There are several sport activities available for the students with special prices for University of Porto students, such as: aerobics, capoeira, hip-hop, kung-fU, swimming, gymnasium, taekwondo, yoga, handball, rugby, squash, and tennis. - ENTERTAINMENT (CINEMA, THEATRE, ETC.; BRIEF INFORMATION ON PLACES AND STUDENT FACILITIES) Exhibitions, Concerts and Shows In Porto it is quite easy to have access to exhibitions, concerts and shows. Entry to many of these is free; others offer some possible discounts. A student card and/or youth card often provide discounts. Porto has also hosted an increasing number of rock and alternative rock shows and festivals. Besides open areas (such as the gardens of Palcio de Cristal), and smaller clubs, 'Coliseu do Porto', the 'S da Bandeira' cinema, 'Passos Manuel', and Hard Club are few places of reference. The Casa da Msica (House of Music) was inaugurated in 2005. This is a venue entirely dedicated to music, from classical to electronic music, including contemporary music, world music and pop-rock. People below 25 are entitled to a discount of 20%. Craft fairs and folk dance and music, as well as popular festivities (especially between June and August), are also very common. Theatre, music and cinema festivals are organised regularly. In May book fairs take place in Porto and Lisbon where you can buy books with significant discounts.

Cinema & Theatre Porto has a vast cinema programme: some theatres show more commercial films (usually in shopping centres); other theatres, though, show more alternative and independent films. Most theatres show films from 02.00 p.m., and the biggest theatres have midnight sessions. Cineclube do Porto and Cineclube do Norte have special sessions, often at 'Rivoli' or 'Casa das Artes', which also show some of the sessions of Fantasporto. As far as theatres and other show rooms are concerned, Porto has 'Teatro Rivoli', 'Teatro So Joo' and 'Coliseu do Porto', the biggest show room in the North of Portugal. There are also smaller show rooms where different companies such as 'Seiva Trupe' or 'Tear' perform, besides plenty of other musical and recreational groups. The University of Porto inaugurated the 'Teatro Universitrio' (University Theatre) in 1998 in Campo Alegre. 'Ateneu Comercial do Porto' and 'Palcio da Bolsa' are often used for performances, mainly musical event. The city of Porto offers a wide variety of cultural activities. Some theatres and cultural centres are

International Festivals Several cultural festivals are held yearly in Porto, among which two stand out for their international renown: FITEI and Fantasporto. The International Iberian Theatre Festival (FITEI) is held in March and brings together theatrical groups from Portugal, Spain and Latin-America countries, like Brazil and Argentina. The Fantasporto, a renowned festival of fantastic cinema, usually begins in the second week of February, and shows around two hundred films of several genres and countries in two weeks. Entertainment Venues It would not be fair to list restaurants, bars, discos or other places of entertainment in a city where there is always a coffee shop just around the corner, a city that has hundreds of bars, especially in the oldest part of the city and in the typical quarters. Besides, new places open regularly and old ones are always being redesigned. Therefore, those studying or working in Porto in a given year will get to know different places from those who come to Porto the following years. However, over the last few years, the downtown area has become the heart of Portos nightlife. The Festivities of the City The festivities of Porto are in June and reach the highest point on the night of 23rd (Saint Johns night 'So Joo' in Portuguese). The festivities of So Joo are one of the most important cultural expressions of the people of Porto. On the 23rd of June the city 'descends upon the Baixa (downtown) and its river' until dawn. Everyone is out in the streets taking part in lively 'rusgas', striking each other with small and big plastic hammers or making other people smell the famous 'alho porro' (leek). The hot-air balloons and the fireworks at midnight are the highest point of the festivities of So Joo.

LANGUAGE COMPONENT
- SHORT DESCRIPTION OF LANGUAGE COMPONENT: OBJECTIVES AND TEACHING METHODS The Beginner course aims at providing students with no previous knowledge of Portuguese with basic linguistic and cultural skills equivalent to level A1 (according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), with a special emphasis on academic needs of communication. Prepare students to communicate socially on straightforward everyday matters in Portuguese language and to get around and lead a reasonably normal social life in Portugal (e.g. exchange information and opinions, talk about experiences, likes and dislikes etc.) Give the students mainly a practical command of simple spoken Portuguese, so that they can say what they need to say in Portuguese and communicate at basic level in a Portuguese speaking environment. The courses include different thematic areas and resort to dynamic strategies and methods of constant interaction that are developed in sessions dedicated to the in-depth study of the structure of the language, to writing practice, to conversational practice and laboratory practice. The classes will essentially be practical, with effective use of all competencies. The capacity of understanding oral speech, read, write, speak, and also structural competencies. Communicational strategies will be valued. Students will participate in various classroom activities such as listening to and watching audio and video documents, role-playing, basic oral presentations, computer-assisted grammar and lexical work, and production of simple written texts, allowing students to put acquired linguistic competence into practice. Conversation classes will emphasize relevant aspects of Portuguese recent history, society, teaching system, political, social and economical contemporary aspects, and significant personalities. In what concerns the oral component, the general ability to interact in a number of predictable communication situations in everyday life will be developed. They will also analyse different texts, written and oral. These practical exercises are intended to prepare the students in a way that they will be able to develop the proficiency needed to the common use of the language in different communication environments. Additionally, all students will be part of the University of Portos virtual community, by having access to our elearning platform (moodle) with course contents especially created for Foreign students. Students complete

interactive exercises but also be part of discussion groups, participate in chats and have access to extra resources (grammar notes, online newspapers, etc.). The course includes: 1) 2 weeks prior online training in the e-learning platform of the University of Porto (Moodle), before the in-class sessions, for a total of 20 hours; 2) 3 weeks of in-class training sessions, with online support, for a total of 76 hours; 3) 3 afternoons for the cultural component of the program, for a total of 12 hours; The two weeks of the online training will be organized as follows: 1) First Session Presentation (video): Teachers will welcome the students, present the program and explain how the course will run. They will also motivate the group to participate in the discussion forum and post each personal presentation there. This video presentation could be made also using the Second Life. This will allow experiencing the advantages of this platform compared to real life teaching and learning and learning contexts, as its uses a synchronous and simultaneous use of voice and text. 2) Diagnostic test on the e-learning platform will allow teachers to assess the level of knowledge of Portuguese and then distribute them by classes; 3) Synchronous training activities (chats) in different moments: 3.1) on the first day of the week in which the course begins, to explain to the students how the course is organized, available materials and practical exercises that they will have to solve; 3.2) Another one during the week, to answer questions; The practical exercises will be presented in English and Portuguese and include activities such as listening, multiple choice, fill in blanks, matching, etc. The 3 weeks of classroom training are organized as follows: 1) Language sessions: Every day of the week, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 02:00 to 05:00 p.m. (6 hours per day).

CULTURAL COMPONENT
- SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE CULTURAL ELEMENTS INCLUDED IN THE COURSE: OBJECTIVES AND TEACHING METHODS Considering that language cannot be dissociated from the people who speak it, their traditions and habits, learning a language implies necessarily learning a culture. Thus, the Portuguese course will also include guided visits to Porto and surrounding cities, and explanation of the origins, traditions and habits of the Portuguese people. Students will have the opportunity to visit Portos historic center (Igreja dos Clrigos, Livraria Lello, Estao de S. Bento, Avenida dos Aliados; Igreja de So Francisco, Palcio da Bolsa and Caves), Braga city (Centro histrico, S de Braga, Bom Jesus and Sameiro) and Guimares city (Castelo, Largo do Pao, Torre de Menagem and Centro Histrico). This component aims to make students aware of the similarities and contrasts between their own cultures and the Portuguese one, broaden their horizons and stimulate their understanding and tolerance towards different cultures. This is an aspect of great importance as we live in a multi-cultural society. Culture sessions: 1 day per week, on Friday afternoons, except for the first week in which, in addition to the cultural visit, the students will have a guided visit on the first day of the course. Field trips scheduled: 1) Guided tour: Igreja dos Clrigos, Livraria Lello, Estao de S. Bento, Avenida dos Aliados; 2) Guided visit to Porto: Centro histrico, Igreja de So Francisco, Palcio da Bolsa and Caves; 3) Guided visit to Braga: Centro histrico, S de Braga, Bom Jesus and Sameiro; 4) Guided visit to Guimares: Castelo, Largo do Pao, Torre de Menagem and Centro Histrico. To develop all four language skills listening, speaking, reading and writing in parallel, without giving undue emphasis to one particular skill, as well as to develop and expand systematically the students ability to communicate appropriately and accurately in spoken and written Portuguese and to provide a solid foundation of Portuguese grammar. Considering students prior knowledge of the Portuguese language, the aim of the course is also to build up and expand systematically the students active vocabulary in Portuguese and to encourage them to discover and learn Portuguese by and for themselves. The intended goal of the course is that students acquire or improve language skills, as well as their knowledge of aspects of Portuguese culture and society, so that they can take full advantage of their program of studies in Portugal. Culture sessions: 1 day per week, on Friday afternoons, except for the first week in which, in addition to the cultural visit, the students will have a guided visit on the first day of the course. Field trips scheduled: 1) Guided tour: Igreja dos Clrigos, Livraria Lello, Estao de S. Bento, Avenida dos Aliados; 2) Guided visit to Porto: Centro histrico, Igreja de So Francisco, Palcio da Bolsa and Caves; 3) Guided visit to Braga: Centro histrico, S de Braga, Bom Jesus and Sameiro; 4) Guided visit to Guimares: Castelo, Largo do Pao, Torre de Menagem and Centro Histrico. It should be noted that the guide on these visits has training in history, thus providing the students with the historical background of the places. - DURATION TOTAL HOURS OF ACTIVITIES 180 hours
