CELIAC DISEASE AND THE EUCHARIST At least 3 million Americans suffer from Celiac Disease (1 in 133 people), an allergy to wheat gluten. This allergy creates difficulties for those who must avoid any food or product that contains wheat or gluten, a thickening agent in many foodsincluding those that contain no wheat at all. Some people are highly allergic and can have significant health problems from even a small amount; others may experience only mild symptoms or none at all. A growing number of people, especially children, are being diagnosed with this intestinal condition. As Catholics, the bread that is consecrated to be the Body of Christ poses a particular health issue for people with Celiac disease. Some choose not to receive the Consecrated Host and only drink from the Cup; others may not be able to receive even from the Cup if any gluten has transferred to it by someone who has received from the Cup previously. People who are highly allergic have to be concerned about cross-contamination. The Catholic Church has granted the use of a low-gluten host for those who cannot tolerate wheat gluten. The host has to have a minimal amount of gluten in order to be bread, which is required for consecration (we cannot use rice, for example). There are several people in our parish who are currently using this alternate host. Perhaps there are others among us who suffer from this condition? If so, we have been developing a set of procedures for the distribution of Holy Communion using the low-gluten hosts, and to receive from the Cup without concern for crosscontamination. If you have Celiac Disease or any allergy to wheat gluten, please contact Fr. Chris so he can inform you of how we can help keep you close to Christ in the Eucharist while responding to your health needs. We plan to begin our new procedures the first weekend of September (9/3-4). Fr. Chris Heath: cheath@stedward.com, or 949-542-4312

PROJECTION AT MASS On the first Sunday of Lent our parish began to use a digital projection system for music lyrics and for various sung parts of the Mass. If you attended any of our bilingual celebrations, we also projected the texts of the readings in Spanish when it was read in English and vice-versa. The parish Liturgy Committee, in consultation with Fr. Steve, asked that we begin the regular use of projection in preparation for the Mass changes which will begin the first Sunday of Advent, November 27, 2011. There is always confusion when change happens in the Mass, and we believe that projecting the new texts will allow for a smoother transition, plus aid in a quicker familiarity with the words. Although a Church document from the 1950s decreed that the use of projectors at Mass was not allowed, documents since Vatican II changed much about what can and cannot be done during the Mass, and has given a wider permission for the use of technology if it aids in full, conscious, and active participation in the Liturgy. We even have the capacity to project live images during Mass (like baptisms at the font in the back of the church which few can see or participate in, and Confirmation), to record events in the church, and broadcast the Mass live on the Internet! The Catholic Church realizes that the modern means of communication can be used to evangelize and allows those who could never physically come to church to still participate in the prayers of the community. Radio and television broadcasting is very expensive and limiting, but with the constantly-changing world of digital and virtual technology, our parish can spread its influence as far as the worldwide web can take us! Some parishioners are concerned about projection being too Protestant, comparing our projection practices to those found in Christian churches throughout the southland. It is important to remember: technology is a tool, it is not part of any faith tradition. Protestant churches may have been using projection and other technologies before Catholics, but that does not make projection Protestant. At any large event with the Pope you will see large projection screens employed. We realize that any change brings confusion and questions. We wanted to get used to using projection prior to the Mass changes in Advent so that it will be as smooth a transition as possible. There will be bugs in the system, and this new media ministry needs to grow significantly so we can take advantage of the full range of its capabilities at our many liturgiesnot just Sunday Mass, but baptisms, weddings, funerals, school Masses, and any other time when projection or recording will assist us all to pray and sing better. ROSARY FOR LIFE The 4th Joyful Mystery THE PRESENTATION The Child is presented in the Temple Because the Child belongs to God. Children are not the property of the parents, Nor of the Government They and we belong to God Himself The Respect Ministry invites you to join us in peacefully praying the Rosary for the end of abortion in front of Plan Parenthood in Mission Viejo at the corner of La Paz and Chrisanta.

IMPORTANT PLEASE READ FOR YOUR INFORMATION Periodically, and more so of late, we have had gypsies, usually a mother with a small child, seeking money from our parishioners after the weekend Masses. While we have given them food from our Christian Service Outreach (to which they are indifferent), what they want are monetary donations. It is a racket and they prey on parishioners good will. They have been circulating among parishes and other establishments seeking money. We ask that you do not respond to their solicitation for money so as not to encourage their return. It is important to say that we are not turning our backs to the poor; rather we do not wish to condone or encourage their manipulative and sometimes aggressive behavior which is a racket for collecting money. TWO HEARTS PRAYER GROUP FRIDAY AUGUST 5TH 9:15 A.M. TO 10:15 A.M. We invite you to join us as we sing and pray before the Blessed Sacrament, the Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet asking Jesus and Mary to fill us with their LOVE. MARRIED COUPLES PLEASE JOIN US THURSDAY AUGUST 4TH All married couples are invited to join us Thursday August 4th for an evening of Living Catholic Marriage a series of topics to help husbands and wives communicate better and grow stronger in their faith. Prior to our meeting we will enjoy a potluck dinner. Come join us! For time and location, call Bob and Mary Dausch at 481-1102. OUR LADYS BLUE ARMY Please join us after the 5:30 p.m. Mass every Tuesday to pray for peace. Our Lady of Fatima in 1917 asked for prayers and rosaries to obtain peace for the world. Now, more then ever we must respond to Our Blessed Mothers urgent call. For some 20 years, a group of Christian volunteers, including members of St. Edward the Confessor and San Felipe de Jesus, have been serving meals to the homeless and working poor in the Capistrano Beach area. In 2006 the group incorporated under the name of Welcome INN (Interfaith Needs Network), a non-profit entity under Section 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code. If interested in serving or you want more information, you can call Madeline Wineberg, 212-3755 or go to www.welcomeinnoc.com.
