***The purpose of proctoring is to safeguard the integrity of the exam. Students may not use references or personal
notes for closed book exams unless stated otherwise. At the conclusion of the exam, the proctor must collect the
exam, answer sheets, and any penciled worksheets and return by these steps:
1. Scan all the return sheets into a single .pdf file and post it back using the Exam folder in the BlackBoard site.
Look for the View/Complete Assignment link and follow the instructions there to attach the .pdf file.
If a .pdf file cannot be created, the proctor may fax the completed paper exam to 1-866-542-5618 (tollfree).
2. Mailing the Exam: The proctor will then mail the exam in the envelope provided by the student.
Questions? Call 701-777-4333. Distance Engineering Degree Program, Harrington Hall, 241 Centennial Dr. Stop
8215/UND, Grand Forks, ND 58202.
Proctoring, unless otherwise noted, involves the following.
The proctor must be present during the entire exam.
No communication is allowed among students.
No unauthorized material is to be used during the exam.
If questions should arise concerning the exam that the proctor is unable to answer, the proctor should: instruct
the student to make a reasonable assumption and continue the exam, make a note of the question and include the
note with the exam when it is returned.

I fully understand that I am on my honor to do my own work on this examination. Further, I certify that I
have neither given, nor received, any aid on this examination. If I violate this confidence, I will receive a
letter grade of F for the course and be expelled from the Program.

1. Water flows as two free jets (at B and C) from a special steel nozzle attached to a pipe at
A as shown in Figure 1. The exit velocities are shown. The total mass of the steel nozzle
with water inside is 3500kg. If the viscous effects are negligible, determine the x and y
components of the forces that the pipe exerts on the support. Draw the force diagram
and the momentum diagram to assist your problem solving. (25 points)

2. A flat, rectangular steel plate divides a stream flow into two streams as shown in Figure 2.
The plates dimensions are L=3.5m and W= 1.5m.
(a) Calculate the viscous drag force on this plate assuming boundary-layer flow with free
stream velocity of 5 m/s.
(b) What is the shear stress experienced by an electronic device mounted on the plate at 1.5m
from the leading edge.

3. A pump draws water through a 15-cm pipe and discharges it through a 10-cm pipe into a
tank of which the water surface is H above the water surface at A. Determine the electrical
power that has to be delivered to the pump such that the flow rate is 0.1m

the pump operates at 70% efficiency and that the head loss in the pipe between A and B

4. (a) The viscosity, u , of a liquid can be measured by
determining the time, t , it takes for a sphere of diameter, d,
to settle slowly through a distance, h , in a vertical cylinder
of diameter, D, containing the liquid (see Figure 4).
Assume that

) , , , , ( u A = D d h f t

where A is the difference in specific weights between the
sphere and the liquid.

(i) Find the exact number of dimensionless terms. (4 points)

(ii) Perform dimensional analysis and show how t is related
to u. (14 points)

velocity of water have to be for the water to be dynamically similar to oil with kinematic
viscosity of 10
