Key-note speaker from the worlds of Philosophy and/or Political Theory. 8 sessions, six (with two each concurrently based on Discussion Circle/PiPs/caf philosophique/Sci-bar principles). Programme will include: Aung San Suu Kyi and Non-Violent Resistance; Direct democracy: 38 Degrees and Avaaz. Why Marx was right; Feminism an up-date; Hobbes and JS Mill; Scientists struggling with Ethics; The role of Aesthetics, from garden gnomes to wind turbines; The Arab Spring; Cooperatives in 2020. Some of the sessions in both courses will be based on reading, listening, viewing; Reith Lecture/s; www.opendemocracy.net; Radio 4, In our Time and Thinking Allowed; New Left Review and other essays, and books. Everything in association with Philosophy in Pubs (PiPs) and the WEA.
