Introduction

1.1 Background information

Internet is a worldwide communication tool allowing millions of users access different resources. Although the history of the Internet arguably begins in the 19th century with the invention of the telegraph system, the modern history of the Internet starts in the 1950s and 1960s with the development of computers. Throughout the world, Internet has become the changing face of education. Internet has indeed found its place in our living in all phases. Its ability to share information across organizations and to interact with people at low cost has gradually enticed other sectors to explore its use. Today, the Internet has an impact on every facet of our life including business operation, education, communication, entertainment, social activity, shopping, and so on. Internet revolution has been in full swing and India is no exception to this. Internet spins the web of interconnectivity around the globe and has been growing literally by the hour. . The word Internet is derived from two words: international and network. The Internet therefore can be defined as an international computer network of information available to the public through modem links so internet is a worldwide system of linked computers networks. The Internet is the worlds largest and most widely used network. The internet has resulted in making the world a global village. In our study, we have attempted to understand the Internet surfing behavior among students. Internet has carved a niche for itself, especially among the student community. Students access the internet for a variety of purposes ranging from academics to entertainment. Although the Internet can be a powerful tool for both academic study and personal communication, for some people Internet access can prove to be a temptation that is hard to resist. Pathological or problematic use of the Internet is a behavior pattern that appears to be affecting more and more people, including students. The Internet provides us with so many positive things and is definitely going to be part of our lives for future generations. However, along with all the positive things the Internet does, we must also pay attention to the negatives impact that it might bring in our life, such as it affects the sleep pattern, the financial status and the personal relationships with others.

1.2 Problem Statement

The aim of this study is to map the internet surfing behavior of students falling under different segments.

We are presently in the information age, and powered by internet. Internet has become a very popular tool among everyone. It has almost taken up the place among basic necessities following food, water, shelter. Internet was earlier used as a search tool and only for certain vital reasons. But, the scenario today has tremendously changed from what it was ten years ago. People seem to be addicted to the internet and this seems to be growing by the years. It has resulted in people attracted to the internet for couple of hours even without realizing it. People browse a variety of subjects ranging from academics to gaming to entertainment. Students, who, as a whole, proportionally spend a greater amount of time online as an investigative tool, might be susceptible to Internet addiction. They surf the World Wide Web, playing online games, downloading files or chatting with people all over the world and so forth.

This study will also point out the internet surfing behavior among students and its impact.

2.

Approach to the Problem

2.1 Research Objective

In our study, we have collected a sample size ranging 100 from school and college students to map their internet surfing behavior. We aim at understanding the following specific objectives 1. The impact of internet usage among students 2. The relationship between the duration spent and their behavior 3. The various purposes for which internet is used

2.2 Research Question

1. What is the internet surfing pattern among students and its impact?

2.3 Hypothesis
The research is designed to test the following hypothesis H0 : Internet surfing does not have an impact on the students behavior H1 : Internet surfing does have an impact on the students behavior

3.Research Design
3.1 Type and Nature of study
This survey was carried out as a descriptive research to determine the perceptions of the consumers regarding internet surfing behavior among students. The survey was conducted in the form of a structured questionnaire. The questions were administered to a large number of respondents who use internet regularly. The questionnaire contained variety of issues as per the specification of information finalized. The method of questionnaires has been used because it was simple to administer and the data obtained is reliable because the responses are as per the pre-specified options provided in the questionnaire. The response rate for the questionnaires has been tremendous to about 100 respondents as on 24th May, 2011.

3.2 Identification of information needed:

Once the objective was fixed, an extensive reading on the topic was conducted from various sources. Journals and other research results helped us to understand the internet surfing behavior and its impact on students.

Extent of researcher with the study: Minimal interference Study setting: Non contrived

3.3 Data collection source:

The data is collected through primary sources viz., structures questionnaires aimed at receiving direct responses.

3.4 Scaling Techniques:

The scaling techniques used were Likerts Scale and Interval Scale. The interval scale was used to map the duration the respondent spends on the internet. The Likerts scale was used to identify the changes in behavior brought about by internet surfing. Interval scale was also used to ascertain certain demographic data.

3.5 Questionnaire development and pretesting:

This phase involved the design of the questionnaire on the basis of the potential factors identified as influencing the customer behavior. Research problems were listed and then the information needed was identified. The questions were then prepared in order to fulfill the information requirements as identified earlier.

3.6 Sampling design:

3.6.1 Target population: The target population for this study project was defined as follows; Element: Male and female students from different phases of education viz., School, Undergraduate, Postgraduate who have access to the internet. . The study does not cover a larger population due to time and money constraints Sampling unit: School, Undergraduate and Postgraduate students Extent: Chennai Time: April 2011 to May 2011 The target population of this study comprises of school and college students. A sample of100 students was taken from this population and being researched

3.6.2 Sampling frame: Contacts of School students of Asan Memorial Higher Secondary Hr. Sec School, SSN College of Engineering, SSN School of Management and Computer Applications .

3.6.3 Sampling Technique: Convenience Sampling

3.6.4Sample size:

The questionnaire was distributed to selected 100 students from whom the responses were collected.

4. DATA ANALYSIS:
4.1 Data analysis plan:
This section shows how the information needed to answer the three key research questions have been extracted via the questionnaire. Questions1 & 2 are questions meant to ascertain demographic information which has proved useful in the course of our research. This was important as we could see a pattern between the age and the internet surfing pattern among students. Question 3: This is one of the key questions of our research as our sample size was spread across these three different samples that formed the participants of our research. Questions 4 & 5: These questions are aimed at extracting information about the hours of usage and the frequency of usage. Hours of usage referred to the number of hours respondents spend on the internet. Frequency of usage refers to the time range within which they use the internet. Questions 6 & 7: These questions focused on information related to the purpose for using the internet which in turn determines the frequently visited websites. Question 8: This question was required to analyze the frequent places of access that the students choose. Question 9: Internet is now available at all times of the day. This question was created to understand the time most preferred by students and its impact. Questions 10 & 11 : These questions are meant to understand the problems faced by the users and their reasons for preferring the internet despite these inherent problems. Questions 12 to 16 : The questions were framed keeping in mind the behavioral changes caused by use of internet.

10

4.2 Methodology:
4.2.1 Questionnaire checking/editing: The questionnaire is checked for completion and interviewing quality. Editing is the review of the questionnaire with the objective of increasing accuracy and precision. 4.2.2 Collation of Data:

The data is collated in the excel sheet and prepared for statistical analysis. An SPSS view of the data was also taken for further analysis. 4.2.3 Choice of statistical analysis test: 4.2.3.1. Chi Square Test:

Chi square test for independence was conducted on the results of the survey in order to analyze the relationship between two categorical variables. The relationship between the age and the number of hours spent on the internet is found. Chi square test was also conducted to compute the relationship between age and the frequently visited websites of various groups of students. 4.2.3.2. Regression:

We conducted a regression analysis in order to study how the independent variables are correlated with the dependent variable. Independent variables can be either continuous or categorical. Here the dependent variable chosen is the age of the respondent and the independent variable is the number of hours spent on the internet and the frequently visited website.

11

5. RESULTS
5.1 Analysis and interpretation:
5.1.1 Chi Square Test:

To interpret the chi-square output we need to look at the Pearson statistic, which is short for Pearsons chi-square. In this case, Pearson has a value of 17.722 with significance of .124. This significance value is above the alpha level of significance and hence it is not significant. Therefore it can be concluded that there is no relationship between age and frequently visited websites. The relationship between Age and Number of hours of surfing the internet has a Pearson value of 5.864 with a significance of 0.662 which is above the alpha level of significance. Therefore we are given to understand that there is relationship between the age and the number of hours spent on the internet. Similarly the relationship between the age and the time of usage is calculated to understand that the Pearson value is 3.071 and a level of significance at .546 which is more than the alpha level of significance which indicates a relationship between these two variables. 5.1.2 Regression:

The dependent variable is age and the other factors such as number of hours spent on the internet, frequency of usage, problems, and reasons for preferring the internet are predictors. The R value is 1 %. 5.1.3 Correlation:

Correlation analysis is conducted to understand the relationship between age and the internet surfing pattern which is positively correlated.

12

5.1.4 Respondents profile: The majority of the respondents belonged to the age bracket of 21-25 years. The majority of respondents have PG level qualification The next majority of the respondents consisted of UG students. The respondents have high awareness quotient regarding internet, their usage and its behavioral changes. 5.1.5 Conclusion:

The majority of the respondents have responded as being impacted by their internet surfing habits. This may be due to various reasons. But it is most important to prevent it from becoming an addiction as it is likely to affect the psychological profile of students thereby impairing their academic performance.

6. LIMITATIONS

Since this Project was intended to initiate us to the methodologies and techniques of Business Research Methods, therefore there are a number of constraints in terms of Manpower and Resources to conduct a large-scale survey. The scope of the project was limited to learning. There have been a number of limitations because of which the survey may not be indicative of the views of the target population. A few of these have been mentioned below. The sample size used for the research is less. Cost and Time restrictions Lack of consultation with subject matter experts like psychologists to understand the actual implications of such behavioral changes The questionnaire was not extensive to map the entire behavior pattern. The responses obtained might be inaccurate or biased, inadvertently or deliberately. Analysis of the proposed aspects might differ depending on the tools and techniques used.
13

7. RECOMMENDATIONS
Based on our research our recommendations to students are as follows: Internet Surfing Addiction can be described as a compulsive disorder which is the obvious outcome of increased Internet Surfing. Internet Surfing Addiction is a term used to describe the mental status of the people who are simply obsessed with the idea of surfing the Internet. Internet is a storehouse of knowledge and entertainment. Some stayed glued to it in order to be enriched with help of the huge amount of information stored in it. Then there are others who find the concept of interacting with others via Internet to be very fascinating and cannot get over it. It is observed from the research that most students surf the internet during the night .Young people who rob themselves of sleep by spending all night surfing the internet and playing computer games are tripling their chances of developing a mental illness. Such practices will also lead to psychological distress which will in turn impair their academic performance. Therefore night surfing is advisable to be avoided. Also, we observe a sudden spurt in the concept of social networking during the recent years which has both positive and negative side effects.
