Solar Panels FAQs.

Q. What is the feed-in tariff?
A. The feed-in tariff is a fixed rate per unit of electricity produced by your Solar PV system. The Government backed scheme introduced on the 1st April 2010 will pay you a tax free sum of 41.3p for each unit (kWh) of electricity generated and is guaranteed for 25 years. Its applicable to all systems under 4kW installed before 31st March 2012. Any surplus energy that is not used is automatically exported to the national grid for a minimum rate of 3p per kWh, although this can vary significantly depending on your electricity supplier.

Q. What is the payback time on the system?

A. Based on current average electricity costs, and assuming modest inflation of energy prices, the payback period should be between 8 and 10 years. This figure could significantly reduce if electricity prices undoubtedly continue to soar. Another plus is the added value the system brings to the price of your property.

Q. What guarantees do I have?

A. For complete piece of mind Solar Electricity Systems has an insurance backed 5 YEAR Guarantee.

Q. How can I see how much electricity I am saving?

A. The system incorporates a smart meter which records and stores data collected from your Solar PV array, so you can easily see what power is being generated and how much energy you are saving.

Q. Do I need planning permission to install a roof mounted system?

A. No planning is not required unless your property is a listed building or you are in a conservation area. Our fully qualified surveyors will be able to guide you through the planning process.

Q. How long does a PV system take to install?

A. Our skilled installers will only take 8 hours to install a typical 2.16 kWp system.

Q. Can I claim the feed in tariff if a non-certified installer performs the installation?
A. No, the installation must use MCS approved Solar PV Panels and be carried out by a MCS certified installer in order to be eligible for the feed in tariff.

Q. Does my Solar PV system need to be south facing?

A. The system should ideally be south facing. South east or south west facing will still benefit but there will be a 5- 10 % reduction in power generated over the course of the year. Your Solar PV system should be sited so there is no shading during the day from nearby buildings, walls, trees etc.

Q. Is any maintenance required?

A. One of the key advantages of Solar PV systems over other renewable energy systems is the small amount of maintenance required. There are no moving parts to wear out and any bird droppings or dust that settles on the modules will be washed off by rainfall. As with any electrical system in the home, periodic inspection and testing is required.

Q. Do Solar PV systems make any noise?

A. No, one of the great advantages of a Solar PV system is that it is silent in operation.

Q. Can I store the electricity generated by my PV system?

A. No, the electricity generated is either used during the day in the house, or it is automatically exported back to your electricity provider who will pay you for this.

Q. Is my roof strong enough to support a roof mounted system?

A. Your roof needs to be able to withstand the weight of the solar array. When our qualified surveyor visits you they will make a detailed report and advise you on every aspect of your viability from the information they obtain.

Q. Do I need to insure my PV system?

A. Yes, you do need to check with your insurance provider that your policy covers this.

Q. Is Solar Electricity Systems an accredited installer?

A. Solar Electricity Systems installers are fully accredited under the Energy Saving Trust's Micro-generation Scheme (MCS) for Solar PV installations and are members of REAL (The Renewable Energy Assurance Scheme). From initial consultation through to project completion you will be in the hands of our skilled and qualified team.
