SUPPORT FORMS RECOMMENDETIONS FROM DISTRICT OFFICIALS

Do not wait for formal activity in order to identify learners with learning difficulties. Educators must always ensure that learners are supported in all the terms of the year and in all the subjects that the learner got level one there must be support forms in that regard.

If it happens that a learner is removed from the retention schedule, there must be evidence which justifies why the learner has progressed.

If the learner performs badly because of other contributing factors outside education e.g. social problems, separate supporting evidence is needed in order to help authorities to take a relevant decision in terms of the learners progression.

Evidence of the learners progress from all the terms is very crucial that it is included in order to track the progress the learner through out the year.

A separate support form must be used for each and every learning area. The support form must be completed in such a way that it clearly indicates the learning area, learning outcome and assessment standard.

In the area of need teachers should write exactly what the assessment standard requires the learner to be able to do or achieve then further indicate the type of interventions applied to assist the learner to achieve.

In a situation whereby a parent has never signed the support form, there must be evidence of what the teacher has done to ensure that the parent e.g. a letter. comes to school

Teachers are advised to refrain from photocopying support forms because learners problems are not the same and in addition to that this could have legal implications in the case a parent protests the retention of his or her child.

In case there are no learners to be retained a blank retention schedule must be submitted to serve as a proof.

HODs were advised to have a management plan which clearly indicates dates on which support forms will be completed during the course of the year.

It was indicated that it is important that teachers who are teaching learners who are being retained accompany those who submit support forms in order to assist in explaining some of the issues regarding the child.

In conclusion it was indicated that at the of the year progression schedules will be compared with retention schedules to see if there will be any changes and support forms will be rechecked to ensure that changes which were recommended have been applied.
