We're pleased to be a part of your first journey into the world of psychology. For many of you, this is also your first venture into a social science core curriculum course. We hope that you will find that the way you will be learning in this course is a satisfying alternative to traditional methods of instruction. PSY 101 at the University of Nevada is different from any other course you have ever taken (or probably ever will). Rather than weekly lectures, smaller discussion groups are offered. You will take your quizzes online in the Learning Lab where you will receive immediate online grading and feedback. Proctoring is offered following these quizzes for feedback or additional help. In addition to the proctored quizzes, there is one traditional unit exam and one cumulative final. We hope you enjoy the nontraditional structure of the course and provide us with feedback so that we may constantly improve our system. Course Objective and Acquired Competencies: The purpose of this course is to provide an introduction to the field of psychology by presenting a thorough review of different psychological perspectives. In addition, students will acquire knowledge of research methodologies and theories that are common to different scientific fields. Upon successfully completing this course, you will be able to: Understand and apply the knowledge, perspectives, principles, and types of reasoning employed in psychology as a social science. Understand how the knowledge, perspectives, principles, and types of reasoning utilized in psychology as a social science may contribute to learning and human development. Develop learning skills that foster integrative thinking and the ability to transfer knowledge and skills from one setting to another.

Required Course Materials 1) Gray (2007). Psychology (5th ed.). New York, NY: Worth Publishers. ALSO NOTE THAT THE LAST CLASS MEETINGS IN THE LECTURE HALLS WILL BE MONDAY (JAN 24TH). ACCORDINGLY, WE WILL MEET IN EJCH 253 FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE SEMESTER. Learning Lab (EJCH 253) Lab Hours: Monday & Wed: 9:00am.-7:00p.m. Tuesday, Thursday & Friday: 8:00a.m.-5:00p.m. The Learning Lab is where you will meet with instructors and proctors, and where you will take ALL quizzes and exams (see Course Schedule for quiz and exam dates/times). The lab is located in room 253 on the second floor of Edmund J. Cain Hall (EJCH). You must schedule a discussion or quiz appointment on the scheduler to come to the lab to take or attend either of these. You may ONLY call the lab when there are scheduler complications. You must present a photo ID to the lab staff in order to take a quiz (i.e., student identification, drivers license, passport, etc.) and participate in discussion sessions.

Psy. 101 - 2

PSY 101 AT A GLANCE On any regular week you have two requirements for this course: (a) attend one discussion session (90-minute class in EJCH 253) and take the discussion quiz at the end of the session, and (b) take one chapter quiz on our computers in EJCH 253 (8 retake opportunities per week!). You can schedule discussion and chapter quiz times on our online scheduler (see scheduler section). Your section has 12 discussion times available for your convenience per week (see your section-specific schedule at the end of this document). In addition, chapter quiz times are available at 20 min. increments throughout the day. COURSE ASSIGNMENTS Orientation (in EJCH #253) 50 pts. In order to acquire a full understanding of our nontraditional system of instruction, you are required to attend one hour of orientation during the second or third week of the semester (1/25-2/4). This orientation will include: Attendance (25 pts.) Completion of a survey and a brief set of questions regarding the subject matter for this course (25 pts.) You will need to sign up for the orientation sessions during your scheduled class meetings at the beginning of the semester. The sign up sheet will be handed out during your scheduled class session (the first week of the semester). For the remainder of the semester, all appointments for quizzes, exams and group discussion sessions will be made by using a webbased scheduler program (quiz scheduler) that can be accessed from home or any computer with Internet access from the PSY 101 homepage. Accessing the Psychology 101 Website: https://webct.unr.edu You must set up your NetID before you will be able to access WebCT. You will need your R# (on your student ID or ePAWS) and your birth year and month to set up your Net ID. Username: Your Net ID- you will need to activate this online (http://www.net.unr.edu/activatenetid/activatewithhints.aspx) or at the campus computing center in the library. You will need to establish your Net ID username and password prior to orientation (the second and third weeks of the semester). Password: You will need to make up a password consisting of at least three of four of the following: UPPER and lower case characters, numbers, and/ or symbols (e.g., Psy#101). You may access the website from home or school. The PSY 101 website contains a wealth of information designed to help you succeed in the course. It includes study guides for the quizzes, online tutorials and demonstrations, a glossary, the course calendar, your current scores and grades, and much more. You are encouraged to explore the website thoroughly. Address: https://webct.unr.edu

Psy. 101 - 3

Scheduler: Address: https://webct.unr.edu Click on Scheduler Icon (not available until orientation) Username & Password: your NetID After you set up this account during orientation, you may access the scheduler from any computer that has Internet access by logging in to WebCT and clicking on the Scheduler icon on your WebCT homepage to schedule for quizzes, discussion groups, the unit exam, and the final. DO NOT attempt to set up this account prior to orientation in EJCH 253. Group Discussions 6 points each X 10 = 60 points total You will be required to attend one discussion session per week (one for each chapter) throughout the semester for a maximum of 60 points. Schedule these sessions on the webbased scheduler and come prepared (read the chapter). Each discussion will involve a PowerPoint presentation with 6 questions at the end of the session which will constitute your discussion quiz for the material covered that week. It is very important that you read the assigned material before coming to a discussion so you are prepared for the discussion quiz.

No discussion groups will be offered for the Midterm or the Final Exam. However, review sessions will be offered in place of discussion sessions for these major exams. Each discussion will last 90 minutes. The course instructors will conduct these discussion sessions. Discussion group evaluations will be handed out throughout the semester. Evaluations have no impact on your grade. If you wish to work ahead or want additional help, you may schedule one-on-one proctoring/tutoring sessions that will give you the same credit as attending a regular discussion group. You must schedule these through our online scheduler at least 2 days prior to the appointment. Proctoring sessions will become available as of the first day of instruction (as of Feb 7th). In addition, you will notice on the course calendar in the back of the syllabus that specific times are marked GP (Group Proctoring). These times are optional group proctoring times made available on a walk-in basis (i.e., you do not need to schedule a time for this). GP times do not count for credit and are optional. However, during these times a TA will be available to respond to your questions and provide further clarification of the content associated with the assigned chapter. In short, GP sessions are designed to provide students with additional help with the material in a group format. GP sessions will be run based on questions that students bring to the session. CHAPTER QUIZZES Chapter Quizzes 15 pts. each Deadlines: Fridays of each week by 5:00p.m. *Note: The deadlines for each quiz can be found on the Course Schedule in this syllabus. Quizzes will contain 15 multiple-choice questions. There will be 10 chapter quizzes. Each quiz is available for one week, during which you may take the quiz 9 times. You may take a chapter quiz twice a day Monday through Thursday and once on Friday (for a total of 9 quizzes per chapter). There is no penalty for 8 retakes and your highest score will be kept for
Psy. 101 - 4

your grade. You will notice an A and B version for each chapter quiz. Both versions are similar but necessary to allow for 8 retakes in the WebCT system. Note: One question on each quiz will come directly from information in your syllabus (i.e., upcoming assignments, lab hours, etc.). To take a quiz: - Get online (https://webct.unr.edu) to schedule a time and date to take the quiz through the scheduler icon. - Present a school I.D. at the learning lab at your scheduled appointment (you must have your I.D.). - Leave book bags on shelves located in the testing room - Plan for 20 minutes to take your quiz. No quizzes will be given within 20 minutes of the lab closing. Plan on 60 minutes for the midterm and final exam. After the quiz: - You can discuss the quiz with a proctor when you are done. Do not exit the quiz as to allow the proctor to look at any questions you may have. You may then exit the quiz and speak with them outside of the testing area. Note that they will discuss the quiz with you but will not give you the correct answer. - You have the option of retaking the quiz, until the deadline for that specific quiz. - If you wish to take a quiz ahead of the scheduled week for that quiz, you must obtain a 13 on a given chapter before being allowed to take the quiz for the next chapter. - After the quiz deadline has passed, you will be able to take the quiz on the next chapter regardless of your score on the previous chapters quiz. On rare occasions, you might have to take the quiz on paper. Make sure to ask the lab manager for a receipt upon completing the quiz. Also, make sure to hold onto your receipt until the end of the semester in case a discrepancy occurs with your grade. The Course Schedule contains dates for completing the course requirements (this establishes a minimum pace). You may work ahead if you wish. If you fail to meet the deadlines, you will receive a zero for the missed quiz, exam, etc. Exceptions will be made on an individual basis (medical and family emergencies, etc.). It may appear harsh, but based on previous experience; the minimum pace is adequate for any student who seriously wishes to engage with the course material. Again, all quizzes, exams, and group discussion sessions can be scheduled through the Web Scheduler. Do not procrastinate! Spots are limited close to deadlines. Make sure to keep your appointment. If you can not make your appointment, cancel your appointment through the quiz scheduler. If you do not cancel, or if you are more than 10 minutes late for your appointment, you will lose 2-points off your highest quiz score for a given chapter. This contingency may seem harsh, but when you do not cancel or when you arrive late, your classmates suffer the consequences. Syllabus Quiz 15 pts. Deadline: Feb. 11th When you come to the lab to take Chapter Quiz 1, you will also be required to take the 15-question Syllabus Quiz. The purpose of this quiz is to prompt you to read this syllabus very carefully, ensuring your success in getting organized for this course. You may only take the Syllabus Quiz once, so make sure that you are prepared for it! EXAMS (No discussion groups will be offered and there are no retakes)
Psy. 101 - 5

Midterm Exam 60 pts. Deadline: Mar. 21-25 The midterm exam is similar to traditional midterms and contains 60 multiple-choice items. Unfortunately, due to time and space restrictions, you may not retake a midterm exam. You take the midterm exam in the Learning Lab once you have completed the first five quizzes. As mentioned earlier, all appointments for exams will be made by using the web based scheduler program that can be accessed from home or any computer with Internet access. Final Exam 120 pts. Deadline: May 2-9 (we will not be open on Prep Day- May 4th) The final exam will be comprehensive (over all assigned chapters) and will consist of 120 multiple-choice items. It can be taken in the PSY 101 Learning Lab at any time throughout the semester, provided that you have: (1) taken all 10 quizzes and the unit exam, (2) completed your writing assignment, and (3) completed a course evaluation form (located in the PSY 101 Learning Lab.) You may not retake the final exam. You sign up for the final exam just as you would for quizzes. If you have followed all of this, you will realize that you can pace yourself to finish this course well before the end of the semester! Web Report Assignment 30 pts. Deadline: Apr. 1st by 5:00pm You will be required to locate a website devoted to the topics that we are covering in this course. You do not use the computers in the PSY 101 Learning Lab to complete this assignment you can use any computer connected to the World Wide Web (at home, the library, etc.). Once your research of the material from the website is complete, you will prepare a 4-page (double-spaced, typed) report related to the topic from that site. On page 10 of the syllabus, please find a set of instructions on how to write your report. You are required to submit an electronic copy of your Web Report to our WebCT page via a homepage icon which will automatically check your paper for plagiarism. Plagiarism: Remember to use direct quotations and citations when paraphrasing or directly quoting anothers work. Any students caught plagiarizing anothers work will receive an automatic F in the course and are subject to expulsion. The PEC Assignment 40 pts. Deadline: May 6th by 5:00 pm Psychology is an empirical and heavily experimental science. Students taking the introductory course should have some experience with the procedures by which the knowledge of the field is generated and published, just as is expected of students in biology, chemistry, and the like. You may participate in research and/or complete alternative writing assignment(s) for required Psychology Experience. The points for this assignment can be earned by completing each or a combination of: (a) research participation, and/or (b) alternative writing assignments (see below). For further information regarding this assignment, please refer to the Psychology Experience Credit (PEC) document handed out during orientation. The PEC document and a link to Research Participation can also be found on the WebCT homepage. You may click on the Research Participation icon to sign up to participate in research. Note: PECs will not be uploaded to your gradebook until after final exams are complete. Research Participation (1 PEC credit per hour/8pts. per research hour)
Psy. 101 - 6

You may make an appointment to participate in a psychology experiment at any time by signing up online from the WebCT homepage or directly at http://unr.sona-systems.com (see handout for further details). If you sign up early in the semester, you will find plenty of interesting studies that offer convenient dates and times for your participation. As you complete each experiment, make certain that the experimenter has written down your name and section number and has given you the proper credit. You do not need to give us a copy of your receipt the experimenters will tell us of your participation at the end of the semester. Hold onto your receipt in case a discrepancy occurs. Common courtesy dictates that you arrive on time for your appointment, or that you cancel your appointment in a timely fashion by calling or otherwise contacting the experimenter. If you have problems signing up for an experiment or would like to confirm that you received research credit for participation, please contact the Subject Pool Coordinator, Jessica Heaton, at: research@unr.edu. Article Summaries: (1 PECs /8 points each) This option consists of reading empirical research articles published in psychological journals found in the library and then writing brief 400-500 word summaries of those articles. An acceptable summary must include the reference to the summarized article, along with a description (IN YOUR OWN WORDS) of: (a) the purpose of the research, (b) the basic procedure used, (c) what was actually found, and (d) what the findings mean (theoretically, practically, or both). Along with each summary you write, you must submit a PHOTOCOPY OF THE ABSTRACT from the published article. EXTRA CREDIT Self-Tests: For each chapter quiz, Midterm and Final Exam, you may take up to three self-tests in a week. The self-tests are similar to the chapter quizzes Midterm and Final Exam except that you cannot be penalized for answering incorrectly or for not taking them. Completing one self-test per week (non midterm/final) will give you 2pts. of extra credit. Completing one self-test for the midterm and/or final exam will give you 5 pts. of extra credit. Important: you need to respond to every question on the self-test to receive extra credit. Thus, you may earn a total of 30 extra credit points by completing one self-test for each chapter, one self-test for the midterm, and one self-test for the final exam. You may not earn additional extra credit for retaking a self-test for a chapter, midterm, or final exam. Please note that the weekly quiz deadlines and the ones for midterm and final exam apply to this activity (see course schedule on page 9) . ADDITIONAL POLICIES Walk-ins All quizzes, exams, and discussion groups will be scheduled online. Quiz walk-ins will only be permitted on the first, four days of each quiz period. Students who have scheduled will have first priority and walk-ins will only be allowed if there is space available. If you choose to try and walk-in on the last day of a quiz or exam period, you will be allowed if there is a space, but your name will be recorded and 2 points will be deducted from your final grade in the class (for each occurrence). This contingency will be implemented for the Unit Exam and Final Exam as well. Make-Ups Call Dr. Houmanfar if you need to make-up a quiz or exam do not bring the request to the Learning Lab. Dr. Houmanfar will decide, on an individual basis (with proper
Psy. 101 - 7

documentation) how and when a make-up quiz will be scheduled. Please call Dr. Houmanfar to schedule an appointment in an attempt to resolve any quiz/discussion make-up issues. Cheating All cheating incidences will be reported directly to Dr. Houmanfar. Be aware that cheating on any test (e.g., chapter quiz, midterm or final) or writing assignment will result in an automatic F in the course and possible dismissal from the University. Web Assignment Guidelines - 30 pts. Deadline: Apr 1st at 5:00pm This assignment is a written project about a particular topic from a related website that has direct relevance to topics discussed in class this semester. You are expected to search the Internet in order to find your site. If you are unfamiliar with how to complete this task, there are student assistants available at the main library's computer lab. In order to receive a satisfactory score, your paper should include the following seven points. A sample of a good web report is available on the PSY 101 home page. If you have any questions or concerns please see any of the TAs in the Learning Lab (253, EJCH).
1.

All papers must be 4 pages of content, double-spaced, with 12-point font and 1-inch margins. Points will be deducted for papers shorter in length, larger fonts, and excessively wide margins. All papers must include your name, date, section number and Net ID. Papers must include an accessible web address. We should be able to directly access your site from the address given in your paper. For example, the address www.unr.edu would allow for direct access to the UNR home page. The subject of your paper must be related to a topic covered in Psychology 101 this semester. You must include a rationale as to why the specific topic was chosen. Your rationale statement should indicate why the topic is of interest to you. If the issue you address is a clinical psychology topic, it is not necessary to divulge personal information. You may indicate why you feel the topic could be relevant to undergraduates or on what basis you determine it to be an issue of social importance. All papers must include and describe what type of audience is intended for the site chosen. For example, the UNR home page is intended for current students, professors, prospective students and professors, and anyone interested in the University of Nevada, Reno. The main portion of your paper should discuss and summarize the information (i.e., what the topic is about) from the website. Please note that we are looking for your discussion of the material. So, please avoid using too many quoted statements from referenced literature. Use quotations sparingly, if at all. If you use someone elses wording, you must place the borrowed text in quotation marks. Avoid quotations in excess of a single phrase. As an example, this sentence would be appropriate: The site referred to a plethora of empirical investigations but identified only two studies, and neither was published in a peer reviewed journal. Be aware that excessive quoting of other authors works will result in substantial point deduction.
