B. First Flush Filter Roof Washer Bottom of Form

When it rains, water slowly builds up in the roof gutter system before it exits through the downpipe. The first flush of water from the roof can contain amounts of bacteria from decomposed insects, skinks, bird and animal droppings and concentrated tannic acid. It may also contain sediments, water borne heavy metals and chemical residues, all of which are undesirable elements to have in a water storage system. Instead of flowing to the water tank, these pollutants are diverted with the initial flow of water into the chamber of the water diverter. The water diverters from Rain Harvesting utilize a dependable ball and seat system - a simple automatic system that does not rely on mechanical parts or manual intervention. As the water level in the diverter chamber rises the ball floats, and once the chamber is full, the ball rests on a seat inside the diverter chamber preventing any further water entering the diverter. The subsequent flow of water is then automatically directed along the pipe system to the tank.

For a Water Diverter to work effectively, the contaminated water in the chamber must be sealed off. This prevents the contaminated water from passing to the storage tank and ensures the water does not "syphon" off the contaminated water in the chamber. The simplest and surest way to do this is with a floating ball and seat. A slow release valve ensures the chamber empties itself after rain and resets automatically. The diverted water need not be wasted water because the drain pipe from the diverter chamber can be fitted to a standard drip irrigation system. Simple and effective first flush devices, these are installed at the downpipe and used when there are a small number of downpipes supplying water to the tank. It is preferable to fit the longest length chamber possible to ensure better quality water. Install the chamber below the gutter filter (or rain head), to within 6" above the ground to allow easy access to the end cap. Downpipe Diverters should be installed at each downpipe that supplies water to the tank. For systems with multiple downpipes or high volumes of water, a Post/Wall Mounted Diverter or InGround Diverter may be more effective. The diverters are supplied in kit form and come with everything needed to complete installation just add the length of PVC pipe required to form the diverter chamber. Water Diverters work best when a gutter downspout filter (sometimes called a rain head) is installed upstream of the diverter. Fitted at the downpipe either directly on the underside of the roof gutter or to a wall, the Leaf Eater or Leaf Beater rain heads, also from Rain Harvesting, are self cleaning devices that deflect leaves and debris away from the flow of rainwater. Rain heads ensure the diverter chamber and Slow Release Control Valve do not block up as easily. They not only help Water Diverters operate more efficiently in preventing fine sediments and pollutants from entering the rainwater tank, they also ensure Water Diverters drain and reset automatically after rainfall, significantly reducing system maintenance.

An optional stainless steel primary screen is available. The stainless steel screen provides extra confidence with additional filtration of fine sediments and pollutants to ensure the slow release control valve does not block.

Diversion Recommendations for the Roof Minimal Pollution: divert 0.0125 gallons per square foot of roof area Open field, no trees, no bird droppings, clean environment Substantial Pollution: divert 0.05 gallons per square foot of roof area Leaves and debris, bird droppings, various animal matter, e.g. dead insects, lizards, etc. Example for a minimal polluted roof of 1,000 square feet: 1000 square feet X 0.0125 = 12.5 gallons to be diverted Example for a heavily polluted roof of 1000 square feet: 1000 square feet X 0.05 = 50 gallons to be diverted

Using the above table, determine the differential (distance between the On and Off positions), the tether length required to achieve the differential, and the location of the tether point. 3. Ensure that there are no obstructions in the upward and downward movement of the float

4. If the on and off points are incorrect, disconnect power from the equipment. For a larger
differential, increase the cord tether length. If the differential is correct, but the level is incorrect, the tether point may need to be changed. Apply power to the equipment, and repeat steps 1 through 4. 5. After all adjustments have been completed, tighten the tie wrap to ensure the cord is held securely. Caution: some suppliers sell lower priced mercury switches. Float balls can leak eventually and mercury is toxic, therefore, we don't want to sell mercury floats.

10 years? 5 years? 3 months? Sooner or later the float switch on your sump pump is going to fail. There is no way to predict when it will happen, and there isn't any way to tell when it is starting to fail. The only thing you will know for certain is that it has failed and that is because you will have water all over your basement - and the expensive repairs from water damage! What is a float switch? The float switch is what turns your sump pump on and off in response to the water level in the sump pit. It's like a beach ball that "floats" on top of the water. When the water rises, the float rises with it. When it gets high enough, a switch inside the float closes and turns on the pump, draining the pit. When the water drops low enough, the switch inside the float opens and turns the pump off. And the cycle is repeated hundreds, thousands, and even hundreds of thousands of times during the life of the switch. Why will it fail? The float switch can fail for any number of reasons. Many times the float simply gets stuck between the pump and the wall of the sump pit. That's because the pump vibrates slightly whenever it runs, and can "walk" across the bottom of the pit, eventually trapping the float between it and the side of the pit. Other times, after so many up and down cycles, it just gives out and stops responding to the rise and fall of the water in the pit. Often it stops working while the pump is running. When this happens, the pump is left switched on so that it runs continuously until it burns itself out. You can't do regular maintenance on a float switch, you can only replace it once it fails.

What is UltraViolet Water Filtration? Ultraviolet light is a spectrum of light just below the range visible to the human eye. Ultraviolet light, at the germicidal wavelength of 253.7 nanometers, alters the genetic (DNA) material in cells so that bacteria, viruses, molds, algae and other microorganisms can no longer reproduce. The microorganisms are considered dead, and the risk of disease from them is eliminated. Ultraviolet (UV) filtration is used as a pretreatment and/or post treatment step to kill or inhibit growth of microorganisms, remove ozone, chlorine and trace organics and reduce total organic carbon (TOC). During UV sterilization, the water is exposed at a controlled rate to ultraviolet light waves. The bacteria absorb the UV radiation energy, which destroys or inactivates their DNA, thus preventing the bacteria from reproducing. UV systems may reduce 99% of bacteria in the water. How does UltraViolet Water Filtration work? Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection uses a UV light source, which is enclosed in a transparent protective sleeve. It is mounted so that water can pass through a flow chamber, and UV rays are admitted and absorbed into the stream. The UV-C spectrum (200 to 280 nanometers) is the most lethal range of wavelengths for microorganisms. When ultraviolet energy is absorbed by the reproductive mechanisms of bacteria and viruses, the genetic material (DNA/RNA) is rearranged and they can no longer reproduce. They are therefore considered dead and the risk of disease has been eliminated. What are the benefits of UltraViolet Water Filters? It is proven scientifically that 85% of child sickness and 65% of adult diseases are produced by water-borne viruses, bacteria and intestinal protozoa such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia. Inappropriate water treatment can lead to heath problems - hepatitis B, tuberculosis, meningitis, typhoid fever, tricomoniasis, and cholera, glaucoma, gastrointestinal pain, salmonella, poliovirus, and diarrhea. In North America, E.coli O157:H7, an extremely dangerous strain of E.coli bacteria, infects more than 80,000 people annually. Fortunately, E.coli O157:H7 is easily inactivated by UV light.

Disinfecting your drinking water with ultraviolet light (UV) makes good sense. It's environmentally safe, it's well proven, and it's the way of the future for water disinfection requirements around the globe. UV water filtration can be applied to almost any water system, it adds no chemicals to the water, it wastes no water, UV is particularly effective with viruses, and is inexpensive to maintain. UV disinfects water without adding chemicals, and therefore possesses some of the same benefits as distillation. It does not create new chemical complexes, nor does it change the taste or odor of the water, and does not remove any beneficial minerals in the water. Ultraviolet light is a natural, cost effective, environmentally friendly disinfection process for use in homes where healthy water is a concern.
