Course Description The combination of the computer and the Internet has created an incredible marketplace. In this course, we will examine the foundation, operation and implications of the Internet economy. Topics include Internet technologies, online market mechanisms, interactive customers, knowledgebased products, smart physical products and services, pricing in the internet economy, online auctions and e-marketplaces, digital governance, policies for the internet economy and an outlook for the new economy. Rationale Firms are spending billions of dollars on information technology to create the infrastructure needed to compete in a digital economy. As the process of "getting wired" continues the need to understand how this new environment is and will affect enterprises and individuals increases. We are rapidly discovering that business practices that have evolved over hundreds of years no longer work. Every aspect of a business is in the process of being transformed; firms are being forced to adapt or fail. The Internet, in general, and the World Wide Web, in particular, has had a dramatic impact on how individuals and organizations exchange goods and services. The Internet has given rise to new organizational forms (e.g., virtual organizations) and markets which feature electronic transaction models in new categories of goods and services i.e E-Commerce. These developments have profound implications for society and raise several legal and policy issues that are yet largely unresolved (e.g., copyright, taxation, etc.). The convergence of computing and communications technologies is having a dramatic impact on such organizational processes as new product development, resource acquisition, order fulfillment and customer service. Objectives Upon completion of this course you will: have a general understanding of the Internet and related technologies be able to identify a firm's E-Business model, scope and revenue streams and be able to evaluate its strategy based upon its position in a competitive space and the macro environment factors that influence it understand the concepts behind E-Business strategy, as well as their real-world application recognize upcoming competitive threats and environmental issues and develop alternatives with which to counter them gain an appreciation of the current and future obstacles to electronic commerce. Reading: Before and After Classes We encourage students to read ahead, before lectures for the materials to be discussed.
