Living Large in Small Spaces

Although many are living large here in North Ranch, not
everyone lives in large square footage. Your space may be limit-
ing, but youre only limited by your imagination when it comes
to creating those amenities large homes have to ofer.
Try these practical ideas for functional use of your small space.
Tiny closet turned mini-workstation. Tis small nook can hold
all the essentials for completing small tasks like mail sorting,
paying bills, and sending emails. A compact, wireless printer can
be neatly stored on a wooden shelf up top. A battery-operated
desk lamp, laptop, and ofce supply organizer can occupy the
middle area on a cut-to-size, matching wooden board that sits
on top of two small fle cabinets. Just open the door, pull up a
foldable chair, and youre in business.
Laundry space turned serving bar. A front-loading, side-by-
side washer and dryer can serve up more than clean clothes.
Tuck them behind sliding curtains and create the illusion of
dressed up cabinetry. Add a custom-ft countertop, some bar
accessories, and this laundry niche can double as a cozy bar area
for mixing drinks and matching socks too.
Stairs turned extra storage area. Tat space under the stairs
is often wasted but valuable space. Integrating built-in draw-
ers under the stairway is a practical way to store miscellaneous
items like magazines, newspapers, umbrellas, gloves, scarves, etc.
How about a pseudo wine cellar?
Or, simply leave it open and it makes for a nice play area or
reading nook for the kids. For a seamless look, paint or stain the
drawers or inside the hollow nook a complimentary color to the
molding or banister.

Scott and Ann Nelson
For the Nelson Family, home is where the heart is.
Gorgeous mountain views. Magnifcent,
scenic parks. Safe, family-oriented neigh-
borhoods. Tese are just some of the
things that drew Scott and Ann Nelson
from their previous north Virginia dwell-
ing to their current home in beautiful
North Ranch. After retiring from the
FBI, with the promise of a job for Scott
as Chief of Security for Warner Bros.,
the Nelsons brought their clan out to
sunny California ten years ago. With
three children, two girls and boy, all in
their mid-thirties, the Nelsons are able to
take the time to do the things they love.
Te Nelsons delight in enjoying a great
meal at their favorite Westlake Village
restaurant, Rustico, where family is frst.
As far as exciting hobbies go, the Nelsons
have perfected the art: utilizing the great
mountain bike trails of the area, sports,
ftness training, reading their favorite
books, swimming in their pool, and play-
ing with their three grandkids (ages eight,
three, and one). With this exhilarating
lifestyle, it is no wonder the Nelsons have
become quite acclimated to California
living and are proud to call North Ranch
their home. In addition to an amazingly
close-knit family life, Scott Nelson also
enjoys teaching as an adjunct professor
for the George Herbert Walker School
of Business and Technology at Webster
University, he is on the board of directors

What grade are you in and what school do you go to?
I am in 2nd grade at Oak Hills Elementary.

Why did you choose to do this?

I chose to do Locks of Love because I wanted to support and
help kids with cancer. It made me really sad to think someone
could maybe get teased because of their disease or the way they
look. It makes me happy to think that if I donate my hair that
at least one kid might have the chance to be helped.

How did you become aware of this cause?

When I was about four or fve years old, I saw a commercial
for St. Judes Hospital. It made me really sad to think that kids
with cancer have to deal with being really sick and possibly
dying, but also with looking diferent because of the medicine
they take. I wanted to see what I could do to help kids with
cancer feel better about themselves.

What are your interests?

Im interested in helping people however I can, plus ballet, read-
ing, sports, drawing, music, and playing with my friends. My
favorite subjects at school are science, math, and history.

Were you nervous about cutting your hair?

I wasnt nervous at all to cut my hair. I was actually really excit-
ed to do it because Ive been growing out my hair for Locks of
Love since I was in kindergarten and it was fnally long enough
for me to donate it!

How do you feel afterwards having a new look?

I feel great about my new look and shorter hair. Its especially
good for the season because its almost summer.

security consulting group called Security
and Risk Management Group, LLC.
When you include the Nelsons' furry
friends Mac and Minnie, the golden
retrievers, and Rudy, their senior cat, it's
a full house! When asked about their
favorite vacation spot, the Nelsons agreed,
there's no place like home.

as a Marine Corp Captain. His Marine
buddies say she looks better with them
than he did, and he absolutely agrees!

Hey Doc, Can You Freeze My Fat Away?

Youve probably heard some of the
hype about new technology that can
freeze fat away. You may have seen
CoolSculpting featured on Te Dr.
Oz Show, Good Morning Ameri-
ca, or Nightline.
Te media describes it as a simple, safe,
noninvasive, FDA-approved treatment
to reduce unsightly fat bulges without
downtime, needles, chemicals, or anesthe-
sia. Te press makes it sound great, but is
it too good to be true?
For the right patient, CoolSculpting
can probably replace a more costly and
uncomfortable liposuction procedure or,
at the very least, help your dress drape
more smoothly or your jeans ft more
comfortably.
Cryolipolysis, the technical term for what
the popular press call freezing fat, is
branded as CoolSculpting by Zeltiq. Te
process involves cooling fat cells to the
point that the water inside them crystal-
lizes, rendering them inactive. Because
these crystallized, inactive fat cells look
foreign to our body, they are metabo-
lized and excreted by the bodys natural
defenses.
Now that you know how it works, lets
look at the bottom line. Is it easy? Is it
painful? Is it costly? Whats the catch?
In short, cryolipolysis does not replace
diet and exercise as the best practice for
weight reduction. In fact, its not meant
to cause large amounts of
weight loss. But it is ideal for
treating trouble areas (think
bra bulge, tummy pooch,
love handles) that just seem
to stick around despite your
being at or near your ideal
body weight. Essentially, if
you can grab a handful (or
two) of fat, cryolipolysis may
be perfect for you.
For the right candidate, stud-
ies have shown that patients
typically experience a 20% to
25% reduction in the fat layer
(measured on ultrasound),
resulting in visible changes
to the bodys contours after
one treatment. Some patients
experience much greater
reductions. Results are seen
as early as three weeks and
continue to improve over the
course of four to six months
post-treatment as the patients body
continues to fush the damaged fat cells.
Treatments can be repeated for additional
slimming efects.
Most patients do not describe the pro-
cedure as painful, though they do feel
pressure and intense cold. Te sensation
is very tolerable without anesthesia or
numbing, and most patients read, work
on a laptop, listen to music, or just relax
during the procedure. In terms of cost,
providers with the latest technology gen-
erally charge $750 to $1,500 per treat-
ment, often discounting additional treat-
ments to the same area.
So, is cryolipolysis too good to be true?
Not for the right candidate with the right
expectations!

Sipping in SpringtimeWine and Food Festival

Te Westlake Village Junior Women's Club2nd Annual Sipping
in SpringtimeWine and Food Festivalwas held at the Gardens
of the World in Tousand Oaks from 3:00-6:00pm. Te annual
fundraising event included tastings from over 30 wine and food
vendors, local entertainment by reggae band Rising Son, and a
huge silent auction flled with trips, memorabilia, and one-of-a-
kind experiences. Te events highlighted charity was the New
West Symphonys Music Van. Te Music Van provides enrich-
ment for thousands of Conejo Valley school children through
ofering them a hands-on experience with orchestral instru-
ments. Proceeds also went to the many charities the Westlake
Juniors support including Hospice of the Conejo, Support for
the Kids, and Senior Concerns.Te Westlake Village Junior
Women's Club is running its new member drive this summer.

Katso Morrow, President, gave a warm welcome to supporters
in her opening letter, encouraging all to fnd answers to their
dream kitchens, to enjoy the boutique shopping and the bites.
Te tour included fve newly designed and renovated kitchens,
each with its owners personality imprinted. Tere were plenty of
practical solutions and design secrets to share.
Te Luithly residence was flled with character and Old World
charm, taking an original 1931 cabin on Lake Malibou and
transforming it into a magnifcent estate. Te kitchen and home
were flled with hand carved bas-relief ornamentation; the
breakfast rooms gazebo ceiling had custom skylights and hand
painted tromp loeil grape vines. It had all of the modern ameni-
ties of a chef s kitchen with the charm of a European mountain
chalet. With the lakeside views and adjoining outdoor rooms,
one felt transported to a vacation hideaway. European crafts-
manship was evident throughout, and carved panels of Tuscany
and Sienna were infuenced by memories of family travels and
photographs. Layers of history, craftsmanship, and love are what
make this a very special kitchen.
Te remodeled home on the lake in Westlake was transformed
by the Mandrys to create a magnifcent entertaining space with
the kitchen and dining area becoming the hub and heart of the
home. Te kitchen included unobstructed views of the water,
and the sleek maple cabinets which were punctuated by an over-
sized Al Dente Brothers vintage poster called Pasta in bright
red. Everything was anchored with calm, slate colored granite
countertops, bar and island. Te multiple prep and entertain-
ing areas make it easy to keep guests entertained while the chef
creates. Te high ceilings gave a spacious and dramatic feeling,
while the Farmhouse wood table, antiques, and stone freplace
maintained a warmth and coziness so often lost in big spaces.
Te most unique item was the curvy Mystic sink in the island,
which one could envision flled with chilled shrimp or bottles of
wine on ice. Now thats a party!
Te Freedmans approached the homeowners of a house that
they just knew was meant to be theirs and created a charismatic
and warm family home in a peaceful Westlake Village neigh-
borhood. As the homeowner told me, she knew in her heart that
it was just the right house to create the charismatic and stun-
ning kitchen of her dreams. She created a Parisian style chef s
kitchen with classic black and white. Te rich charcoal black
cabinets were contrasted by the cool clean Calcutta marble and
white subway tile backsplash and then surrounding the beautiful
soapstone island. Te focal point of the room is the hand paint-
ed tile backsplash behind the big Wolf stove with various herbs
named in black script. Highlighting the room is a gorgeous view
of the gardens as viewed through the custom window boxes
flled with the owners crystal collection. Chic, functional, and
classic all the way!

Te professionally designed kitchen in Agoura Hills was
designed to be the everywomans kitchen, flled with utilitarian
features, neutral materials, and practical solutions in a moder-
ate size space. Designer Eileen Gould took the 1980s country
kitchen to a clean contemporary kitchen flled with modern
amenities. Te Friedmans wanted a family friendly kitchen, and
they love the warm cherry cabinets that were stained on-site to
maintain a rich quality fnish. Tey blend beautifully with the
granite counter tops and travertine tile backsplash and custom
tiled hood over the stove. Wood foors tie the new kitchen
together with the family room and bar to create an open and
warm entertaining space.
And last but not least, our visit to the Arteaga home high on
a hill in Westlake proved to be a great fnale with an outdoor
kitchen and living area. With panoramic sunset views over
the salt water pool, one could envision outdoor barbeques and
dinner parties enjoying the outdoor ambiance. Te authentic
Spanish tile roof and archways enclosed the outdoor dining area
with a raised open beam ceiling and an oversized stone freplace
accentuated by lovely iron chandeliers and sconces. Te bar was
elegant yet serviceable with rich Tuscan red granite, ready to
serve hors doeuvres, drinks, or full course bufet. Te terra cotta
tile patio and multiple seating areas proved to be the perfect set-
ting to enjoy the views of the surrounding North Ranch valley
and hillsides.
We cant go without giving mention to all of the featured res-
taurants that served wonderful food samplings at the North
Ranch Community Centre. Boutiques featured shopping from
a bevy of wonderful vendors and the Bites were served by the
following generous hosts: Boccaccios, Grissini, Sweet Arleens,
Tifa Chocolate, Bellini Osteria, Fins, Rustico, Te Grill, and
VomFass. Even Antonio Saba'to Jr showed up with his mother
Yvonne Saba'to in support of the charity event.
Highlighting the tour, we were impressed by the professional
designs and endless ideas in all fve homes. Tere was defnitely
something for everyones taste and dreams. Tis was an event to
make sure is on your calendar next year, a not to be missed feast
for the senses.

10 principles of economics and a summary description of each:
1. People Face Tradeofs - Individuals and households choose
among alternatives i.e. time vs. income vs. expense vs. savings vs.
education vs. enjoyment. Societies face similar tradeofs: various
rates of taxes and interest vs. spending and investment choices;
work incentives vs. redistribution and welfare programs; ef-
ciency and regulation vs. costs.
2. Te Cost of Something Is What You Give Up to Get It -
Costs comparison and benefts derived of alternative courses of
action is described as opportunity cost.
3. Rational People Tink at the Margin - Decisions involving
small incremental adjustments to obtain incremental benefts
provides major resulting aggregate benefts.
4. People Respond to Incentives - Policy makers design incen-
tives to modify societal behaviors, i.e. taxes and interest rates are
adjusted to tempt, alter, or mandate changes.
5. Trade Can Make Everyone Better Of - Trade among coun-
tries can make countries better of. Trading promotes greater
specializations, which provides greater varieties of goods and
services at lower costs.
6. Markets are Usually a Good Way to Organize Economic
Activity - Te free marketplace, not government controlled
central planning, is where supply and demand and decentralized
decision making produce an efcient and efective system.
7. Governments Can Sometimes Improve Market Outcomes
- Whether referring to government intervention in environmen-
tal or monopoly issues or in an inefcient allocation of resources
causing distortions in the market place, i.e. mortgages and real
estate, or whether discussing the public policy subjects of taxes
and welfare, the objective is to promote fairness, efciency, and
equitable benefts within a debate of more or less government
control, redistribution and regulation.

10. Society Faces a Short-Run Tradeof between Infation
and Unemployment - Te Phillips Curve explains the trade-of
between infation and unemployment. Generally, a lower mon-
ey supply will result in lower prices due to a reduction in the
amount available to spend. However, the tools to efect change
in monetary and fscal policy are so powerful that they are the
subject of ongoing political debate.
