Foreword

Gary Craig the originator of EFT, is fond of referring to his methods as the ground floor of the new Healing High Rise. With Full Circle, Dancing the Meridians, Alister Brede extends those buildings skyward. Alisters new methodology is certainly based on EFT but it builds upon it by drawing in aspects of the chakras and by investigating fully the effects of operating on the various meridians. This is one of those rare teaching texts that is also a good read. I thoroughly recommend this as valuable reading for all Energy Therapists.

CHAPTER ONE
All About Me!
How did this all start? Yes, I remember, it began with a Sunday Newspaper. At the time I was living and working in Bahrain, which is a little island scrunched up against Saudi Arabia in the Arabian Gulf. I saw an advertisement announcing a Hypnotherapy Training Course by distance learning. Thats just an up - market way of saying it was a correspondence course. So, I wrote away to Bournemouth for details. Back came an audio cassette giving some details of what the training offered and how the world required Analytical Hypnotherapists to set it back on its feet. It sounded quite fascinating and I was hooked. In October 1984 I qualified as an Analytical Hypnotherapist. The study part was fun, and I felt quite bereft on receiving that piece of paper that indicated I was free to practice. Each week I would receive the lessons in the post and along with them came taped lectures from the instructor, Neil French. Fortunately I was able to travel easily and cheaply and I had gone to see him in Bournemouth and he had taken me through something called a training analysis, during which many long forgotten scenes from my childhood came flooding back to surface awareness. Each time we had a session, I came away feeling drained and exhausted. Gradually, behaviour patterns that had been there began to shift away. I was only aware that they had gone when I looked back and noticed that I had done such and such and now I did it no longer. Certainly I was feeling calmer and more grounded. Looking back it is difficult to remember why I had started that course. All my friends were hugely derisory. They laughed and scoffed, without having a clue about what they were ridiculing. I have found that people take positions and can completely dismiss something they know nothing about, simply because it sounds a little odd. Perhaps they felt threatened by my embracing a concept that they did not understand, and which set me apart from them. I dont know. All I know is this hypnotherapy course was passionately interesting. I eagerly awaited the new lessons and felt a tad flat when I had completed them and returned them to Neil French in faraway Bournemouth. Then another lesson would come and I could carefully examine the previous one suitably daubed with the instructors comments and observations. Then it was all over! The exam was completed, I had passed and now had an impressive blue certificate, which I hastily framed and plonked up on the wall. But what was I to do now? I had passed the exam, and to all intents and purposes I was qualified, and you know what Oscar Wilde said; Practice makes perfect, and I practised and practised and practised. First I put an advert in the Gulf Mirror announcing to the world that I was now open to see clients. And clients began to make appointments. Unfortunately my boss saw my advert and cautioned me that hypnotherapy was just a little too radical for the Bahrain of 1984. He

was certain it would cause a run in with The Ministry of Health and suggested that I desist. Now this was the last thing that I wanted to do. I wanted to practice until I was perfect, or at least as near perfect as possible. Im still not there and its now 17 years later! In 1983 I had bought a small flat in Pembridge Villas, which is situated in Londons Notting Hill. I was very proud of my little flat and would tinker whenever I got a chance. I also lent it to friends who needed a pad in London, as I was away for most of the time. Deep down, however, I really wanted to live in my flat, and so I did! In September 1985 a DC 10 touched down at Gatwick Airport from New York. I had left Bahrain in the July and gone to London via the circuitous route. The Company had very kindly given me a first class round the world ticket. This had taken me to Singapore, Djakarta, and Bali and then to Sydney and around Australia. Onwards I went to New Caledonia and New Zealand. My family there had welcomed me like the prodigal son. We rented a camper and drove all about the North Island. Its sad to think that all but one of them has gone now. From New Zealand I flew across the Pacific to Tahiti. A famous New Zealand snooker player and myself managed to capsize an outrigger canoe off the coast of Morea and I had to dive deep into the crystal clear water to retrieve my belongings which were gently sinking to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. Later, I slipped and fell on the beach. The fall rekindled an old ligament injury that meant my knee swelled up like a balloon and walking became excruciatingly painful. That was not all. When the wonderful day to leave dawned, and I arrived at the airport with the throngs of other passengers wishing to fly to Los Angeles, I couldnt! Why? I had lost my ticket. Lost is the wrong word, as I had actually mislaid it. It had hidden itself in the lining of my flight bag, and when the big jet had flown away and I had found a place to stay, I found it again. So I did get to Los Angeles and beyond. In fact all the way to Gatwick, where a limo awaited to take me to 14C, Pembridge Villas, London W11. 1985 went by and then 1986 and then 1987 and I was growing more than a little disgruntled. You see all those theoretical results we had been told about in training were just not happening as frequently as I had been led to believe. I reckoned I was getting results in approximately 30% of cases and this was just not good enough. Thats about as good as placebo effect, which in isnt really good enough. So, I started to search for better ways of doing the job. First it was toxins and allergies, which could be identified by kinesiology and then treated with homeopathic desensitising remedies. Not a whole lot of success in this department and so on to Primary Cause Analysis by Hypnosis. New Zealander, Jim Bennett believed, quite rightly all nonfunctional behaviour was the result of childhood trauma. However, his trauma was always due to abuse. He may or may not be right but this was a heavy way to go at a time when Dr, Marietta Higgs was making more and more startling allegations about sexual abuse in the home and the social services were marching in like storm-troopers and removing children from their parents. I learned a lot from this, but found it emotionally very challenging. By now I had moved to Londons Harley Street and had a thoroughly booming practice. Moreover, I was also on the Council of Management of the Institute

of Analytical Hypnotherapists, and everything should have been rosy. True money was flowing in, but results were still not satisfactory. I went off and studied Touch For Health and basic Kinesiology, and came to the conclusion the answer lay in the body. The next step was a three year Holistic Health Diploma Course which covered a gamut of subjects, including Clinical Kinesiology and acupuncture all because I went along to a lecture on Electro-Magnetic Fields (EMFs), by someone called Harry Howell. Harry was the founder and principal of the Whole Health Clinic in Sherborne, Dorset and founded Howell College. He had become famous in 1980 as a result of Jana Bokovas film of his work, which had won the Best Documentary Award at the Cannes Film Festival. The talk on EMFs was sufficiently awe-inspiring for the next step. This was a brief training in Sherborne on Colonic Irrigation. For those who dont know colonic irrigation is a way of washing out the bowel or large intestine. Unlike enemas which are uncomfortable, colonics allow water to gently enter the colon and when pressure is felt the water is released taking with it the detritus that resposed in the area. A recent Guardian newspaper article tells of someone who released a marble which had been swallowed 22 years earlier during a colonic. High colonics have over the years been the butt of jokes from derisory comedians who have shared a lavatorial sense of humour with their audience. However, there is a lot of evidence to show that washing of the colon is an excellent way of ridding the body of toxins. The skin begins to glow with health and energy levels increase. Although a trained colon therapist, I have never practiced. Why? I suppose it is just very inconvenient to have such a set-up. However, Mary Anderson did, but more about her later on. The other Irish man trained by Harry in the same discipline is Dr. Vincent Power from Limerick. I first met Vincent in 1986 when he wandered into my consulting room in Kensington High Street and asked me to teach him all I knew about hypnosis. I dont believe I taught him anything, but I did point him in the direction of somebody who did. He told me about the wonders of Limerick and showered me with invitations to visit. I didnt but little either did I grasp, that only 4 years later I would be living and working in Dublin. True thats not Limerick, but it is after all the capital of Ireland. As is so often the case, It seemed that Harry was a significant marker on this wonderful journey of self-awareness. When Howell College launched its first three year diploma course in Holistic Medicine, who should be there as a student but one, Alister Brede. Looking back I reaffirm I acquired a huge body of knowledge in this my quest for The Holy Grail. Harrys Course embraced acupuncture and Chinese Medicine, which involved a residency working in a hospital in Sri Lanka. However, it came to dawn that there were others who were better acupuncturists and it might be better advised to stick to the area I knew best, namely the mental/emotional sphere. As this course progressed, I happened to go over to Dublin to a Conference on some completely unrelated matter. Whilst in Dublin I happened to meet somebody and as is the case in these matters this led to a huge change in

course of my life plan. The October of 1990 saw me living at 6, Palmers ton Road, Rathmines, Dublin 6. Oh, yes I continued with the Course. I would commute over to London to attend on a very regular basis. Unfortunately, this caused quite a lot of tension in my new found relationship. It was thought I was spending all the money! I didnt really listen to the complaints but thats another story, and might account for the fact the partnership died an untimely death and explains the irony of why I am still alone in Ireland with Jasper and my ex-partner now lives with someone else in London! The Next step on that path was Neuro-Linguistic Programming, which did make a huge difference. Many of the therapeutic techniques, were elegant and impressive to do, but they did not seem to hold over the long term. However, NLP gives all who take the time to look carefully at it powerful language skills which are perfect for expanding everybodys view of the world. It takes us all from a place where we believe we have few if any choices to a bigger map where we grasp there are many more choices than any of us allowed for. Another benefit of NLP is it teaches us to ask questions, which cut through the fluff of confusion that surrounds so many of us, inhabitants of planet earth. That means I am of the opinion anybody in the coaching or therapy business, needs to be conversant with NLP. Language skills train us to ask questions which cut through surface structure and connect to the deeper issues. Like so many things, the best way to learn is to do. You cant learn NLP from a book. Thus the reason that I urge everyone in the therapy and coaching business to go off and study NLP at least to Practitioner level. You cant not be a better person that way, can you? WHY? Well, the language component will help get the swiftly to the heart of the matter and that saves a lot of time, which in turn makes you more efficient! Asked properly these NLP based questions can re-frame peoples lives and not simply remove their symptoms. Tad James asks: What is the question I can ask by the very nature of the presuppositions in the question will cause the client to make the greatest amount of change by having to accept the presuppositions inherent in the question itself? Now, that sentence will send you into trance, wont it? Thats supposed to happen, isnt it? But then, where is there a better place to find the answer? What on earth is he talking about? Its simply this. The world of the conscious mind is indeed limited. It seems most of the human race can process 5 plus or minus 2 pieces of information at any one time. Some people cant even manage that. We all know someone who cant chew gum and walk down the street at the same time. We have all had a similar experience where we were all over the place and prone to fall over our own feet, especially when our energies are all askew. However, the unconscious mind can process somewhere in the region of two million pieces of data at any one time. Trance gives access to the unconscious, so where better place to go if choice is the name of the game. One of the NLP beliefs is: He who has the most choices triumphs in every outcome.
8

Many people get stuck because they believe they have far fewer, if any, choices than is accurately the case. Get them to see the bigger picture and a way out usually reveals itself. I need to take a little detour and talk briefly about beliefs. I think Tony Robbins described beliefs as: opinions with legs. They are not cast in stone and they can change. Up until the 16th century it was largely believed that the world was flat. This was a very inconvenient theory when it came to explorers going off to discover the new world. There was this inherent danger that they would fall off the end, and then what would happen to them? Some very brave souls like Copernicus and Galileo were dubious about the assumption, and so they challenged it. This thinking went against the established beliefs of the day. Thinking that was laid down by the Church, that was there to intercede between Man and God. Ideas that ran contrary to the accepted wisdom of the Church were considered heretical. Dissent like this was considered a crime, and poor Galileo and Copernicus had a very hard time of it. Heterodoxy challenged orthodoxy and won. Nobody today believes the earth is flat. Beliefs are changeable and are determined by the age in which we live. In other words viewpoints are time dependent. I find it very curious when so-called experts appear on television or elsewhere in the media and pronounce that such and such is impossible. What they really mean to say is that the problem has not been solved at this time. Its not impossible, because more than likely time will change that. Dont you think its a good idea to take a good hard look at all your beliefs on an ongoing basis? Once we start challenging our own thinking, it begins to loosen up. That, my friends is what flexibility is, and its the opposite to rigidity. The more flexible you are, the more choices you have and the more choices you have means you are more likely to achieve an outcome you want rather than one you dont! This is so powerful, and this form of questioning needs to take place face to face whilst the Case History is being taken. By the way I believe a Case History is just as important as any intervention carried out by the therapist during therapy. Anyway, I digress, but the mention of Tad James takes me to the next landmark in my search. And that was Time Line Therapy and now were in the year 1994. Lots of important events took place in that year. A client who came to see me, was so impressed with NLP that he decided to go off and find out more. Ironically, he studied with an American named Tad James. As it happened this client, had a wonderful shop crammed with fascinating books, wondrous tapes and other such goodies. At about this time he came panting along with details of a book he had just discovered. It was called The Celestine Prophecy. He had a synopsis of the story, as sadly at that point the book was not available in either the UK or Ireland. I knew I had to have a copy, and so I called my friend Olga in California, and she tracked down a hard covered edition in her local bookstore. Kindly, she sent it to me as a birthday present. This bestseller by James Redfield was not especially well written but it explored the various insights in a new way. It pretended to be an adventure novel, and yet taught some serious lessons. One of these concepts was that of energy. It seemed we could see energy. I

spent many a happy hour gazing at the smoky shimmer that came off my fingers and other objects particularly plants and trees. Redfield taught us how to charge these energies by soaking in the beauty of nature. He pointed out how certain positive situations could be highly energizing and how others such as fear related experiences could have the opposite effect and drain energy. At the time I did not fully realize the full significance of the information, but it certainly paved a path. So much so, that I wanted to share this information with as many people as possible. As a result The Celestine Sundays came into being. These one-day workshops explored in an experiential fashion the riches found within the covers of that Time-Warner publication. We walked a time line, looking down on the events that brought our civilisation from the dawning of Christianity to the present time. We sat around in a circle looking at energy, gazing at one another in a sufficiently defocused manner so that most people present had an opportunity to discern that shimmer not dissimilar to the miasma that hovers over a macadam road on a hot summers day. Family coping mechanisms were exposed and the poor-mes, intimidators, interrogators and aloofs outed. It was all a lot of fun, and for some people it started a path of exploration that was to become increasingly more important as the future began to unfold. My ex-client, John, talked about a component of his NLP training which was new to me, and that was Time Line. He had learned this from his studies with Tad James. Here was a relatively simple therapeutic approach that took the client back to root cause and flattened it on a permanent basis without the need for huge abreactions and similar histrionics which were always extremely painful. Like The Celestine Prophecy I desperately wanted to know more. I realized that this was the missing component of NLP. Time Line would get results that held on a permanent basis, unlike many of the temporary quick fixes, which seemed to be the downside of NLP. So, I stuck with it and worked with Time Line right up to the recent present. Generally speaking I was pleased with the results and we did some good work. Time Line has a strong metaphysical component and this took me on to Reiki and Hawaiian Huna. Tad James does a lot of his training in Kona, Hawaii and I decided I would like to spend some time there, too! But Im racing ahead once more. The other landmark event of 1994 was Natural Solutions. Natural Solutions is still a name I use today, but back in 1994 it was the handle given to a small healing Centre located at 6, Clifton Terrace in Monkstown, Co. Dublin. Prior to this time I had been working out of the Mary Anderson Centre. Mary had done some of her training with Harry Howell, and so an area of commonality existed between us. Yes, she was a colonics person amongst other things. However, she had also established a thriving healing Centre in her very large house situated in Grosvenor Terrace. Mary had certain problems that she had never resolved and these interfered with her gifts as a therapist. They also made working with her extremely difficult. In the summer of 1994 events came to a head, and a bevy of people working out of the Mary Anderson Centre decided to go their own way. The result was that three others plus myself went to see a large flat in Clifton Terrace with a view to turning it into another Centre. After the initial viewing that number shrank to three. The three were Brid Walls,

10

Majella Conway and myself. Without a bean between us, we rented the premises and Natural Solutions came on stream on September 1st 1994. The project was great leap of faith, which paid off. I have to say it was certainly touch and go over the first few months. I think the third rent cheque bounced. Bouncing cheques from new tenants rarely impress landlords, but Francis and Anne-Marie Lynch held the faith and became firm friends right up to the end of the Natural Solutions Healing Centre venture in December 1998. Thanks to my friend Phillipa Samuelson I came across the book Other Lives, Other Selves by Roger Woolger, shortly after the setting-up of Natural Solutions. I was urged to be in London for Phillipas Birthday in the October of 1995, and once there she cajoled me into attending what she promised to be her birthday Celebration. I had on pain of death to be at St. Jamess Church in Piccadilly at 7pm on the day in question. Thinking this to be an unlikely venue for a birthday party, I showed up nonetheless. Phillipa was an adept at surprises and none of them was to be missed! The evening turned out to be a lecture and slide presentation by the author of Other Lives, Other Selves, Dr. Roger Woolger. I was also introduced to his assistant, Rob Jayne, and we became close friends. Roger has developed an interesting technique, which he says is designed to take us back to experience our past lives. Whether or not this is possible is certainly open to conjecture, but the result is almost always interesting. Dr. Woolger himself wrestles with the possibility of past lives. He is however stern in his view that visiting these previously hidden area of the souls existence is not for the purpose of an excursion, a magical mystery tour for the curious. The result is generally pertinent to what is happening in this life, right now. Thus past life therapy is a learning experience which gives valuable insights for this life. The re-experiencing of the lives can be an emotional experience with dramatic abreactions and frequent healing catharsis. It is not a journey for the faint hearted. Perhaps, one day I will sit down and write about the most significant of my supposed past lives. I know it will be a very stirring and gripping account. In the winter of 1996 I was lucky enough to go over to Woodstock in upstate New York where Roger was living and spend a week with him and Rob Jayne. The house was a gate lodge to a large estate on the outskirts of the town. Heavy snow lay round about and the temperatures plunged to 20 degrees Fahrenheit at night. It was an old house which lay at the end of a steep drive, meaning that only those with four-wheel drive vehicles could make it up the rough incline. It was breathtaking winter setting redolent of the film White Christmas with its creaking floorboards and blazing log fires. Roger lived amongst a sea of books and was a mine of fascinating information. There were two results to that trip to frozen New York State. One was that Roger would allow Rob to come over to Ireland and introduce his work to the Irish via Natural Solutions. The first of those workshops was in March 1996. This enabled Roger to gather sufficient interest to hold a 5-Day Intensive Training at Castle Matrix later that year.

11

Sadly Rob was unable to continue with his two-day introductions because of his own problems back home in the USA, so he was replaced at the last minute by another of Rogers Trainers, Mary Haskins from bonnie Scotland. The second result came as a consequence of meeting Lester on my last morning at the house in Boggs Hill. Lester was a mechanic who fixed Mercedes, but he had bought the plans of a nifty little machine. These plans were the result of the work of Bob Becker. The machine worked as a frequency generator, pitched or so I was told, at such a frequency to kill a host of microbes and viruses. More than that it also worked with an electrode to produce colloidal silver. This was all quite fascinating. I had to have one and so I placed my order, with promise of payment when I got back to Ireland. To this day I have certain reservations about the machine. I attached the two electrodes to my wrists and fell asleep for the hour-long treatment periods and only seemed to get what looked like a prickly heat rash on the spots where the electrodes had been. However it made smashing colloidal silver, and so Natural Solutions Silver Colloid came into being. A colloid, for those who dont know is a mixture in which fine particles, in this case silver (Ag), is dispersed without being dissolved in another substance, in this case pure filtered water. Fog, paints and butter are all examples of colloids. During tests, colloidal silver has been shown to destroy over 650 different pathogens, viruses, fungi and parasites. History shows that the Romans knew about the bactericidal properties of silver over a thousand years ago. This is when legionnaires carried their water supply in silver containers to keep it safe and pure. Accounts from the past show us it was used by Alexander the Great, Julius Ceasar and survivors of the great plagues that swept through Europe throughout the Middle Ages. The American pioneers used it as they made their great trek across the continent in order to reach the Pacific Ocean. The trick was to put a silver dollar in your water flask. In the nineteenth century, physicians began dropping silver into the eyes of newborn infants, to prevent blindness. The UCLA Medical center reported that Colloidal Silver killed every virus that was tested in the lab. Dr. Henry Crooks in: Use of Colloids in Health and Disease, said, I know of no microbe that is not killed in laboratory experiments in six minutes. Dr. Harry Magraf of St. Louis stated: Colloidal Silver is the best all round germ fighter we have. The Home Water Filtration, which saw a huge growth during the 1990s, has been using silver in their filters in order to eliminate bacteria for a considerable time. With all this evidence to back up its effectiveness a machine to make this astonishing colloid was, indeed, a find worth having. The Natural Solutions Health Centre scenario had also changed. Brid Walls elected to go her own way in 1995 and Majella took a similar decision in 1996. This left me on my own and opened the way for Brenda Blair to enter the scene. She became a partner in 1996. Brenda attended Robs Past Life Introduction. She quickly developed an interest in that area of therapy, and

12

she was to become a stalwart, attending all of Dr.Woolgers Trainings in Ireland. When they ceased, she ventured across the Irish Sea to England to continue her training. Brenda was also the Irish Co-ordinator of Marshall Rosenbergs Non-Violent Communication. The clock tells me we are now in 1997. I saw that Tad James and David Shephard were presenting and Introduction to Hawaiian Huna in London that June. It was a few days training that included a component fascinatingly named; Creating Your Future. I was already on the Reiki trail and had started my Reiki Initiations having completed Reki 1 with Mary Fanning in Dublin. Mary had been using Natural Solutions for Reiki work and so I had not had very far to go. I had been hearing about Tads work with Huna, and was really paying attention because he claimed Time Line was a technique that had its heritage in the traditions of the Hawaiian people. Huna is truly remarkable. Translated from the Hawaiian in means secret. This is not some Masonic clandestine organization but a means of bringing back many of the secrets that have been hidden over the eons of time. It is interesting that in a later Chapter when we examine the Chinese Medicine and its relationship to Energy Psychology we come across the Sons of Reflected Light. This race of giants, who are said to have arrived in China approximately 12,000 years ago, brought with them an array of skills that they taught the Chinese. Could there be a connection here? Serge King, is a Kahuna . Kahuna translates as keeper of the secret, which could be more realistically described as someone who uses Hawaiian Huna. King tells of a legend that is very, very old. This story recounts the history of the Continent of Mu. It seems that in the dark mists of time a huge continent nestled in the Pacific Ocean. It was a veritable land of milk and honey. A race of people came from the Pleiades in far space. They came with skills far in advance of those possessed by the Inhabitants of Mu. Sadly this huge Continent was destroyed because of a ruckus in the Universe which knocked the Earth off its axis and caused most of the land mass to sink beneath the sea. Only the highest peaks were left and these are what make up the Hawaiian Islands, Tahiti and so on. It seems there had been a great war in the Universe. A war that the Pleiadians could have prevented but did not. As a result the few that remained were forced to leave the islands and go off elsewhere. Could this have been the basis on which Huna and perhaps the Tao were built? Huna is the shamanistic belief system of the Hawaiian Islands. I suppose these ideas have survived because these Pacific islands are very remote. They lie two thousand miles off the coast of the Continental US, and remained relatively untouched by progress, except for a few foreign whalers until the coming of the American missionaries in the 1820s. It is even more surprising that any of this information has survived as Hawaiian was never a written language and the information had to be handed down over the generations in another way. The other way was the Hawaiian chants. Hawaiian is a language of 12 letters and 4 vowels. Because the language is so restricted it is very much context driven. For instance the word Ha can mean breath or the number 4. The meaning will only be evident from how the sentence is constructed. The Christian Missionaries compiled several Hawaiian-English

13

dictionaries. The chants to them were cultural artifacts extolling the virtues of the birds and the bees, the flowers and the trees. If they had known the true meanings they would surely have suppressed them, because the huna secrets were handed from one generation to the next hidden not in texts but in the chants. Another method of expressing Hawaiian culture was via Hula dancing. This is an intricate and precise art form. The missionaries quickly took exception to these dancers, feeling the girls were scantily clad therefore indecent. Perhaps, if they had known the reality behind the illusion they would have taken even greater umbrage. It is ironic that the first writer to explore this hidden culture in depth was an American! Max Freedom Long went to the islands during the First World War as a photographer. In his book What Jesus taught was Secret he was able to formulate a theory, which shows Christs message was indeed on two levels. On one level we have the literal and on the other the metaphorical which his true followers would be able to understand. Unfortunately some who claim to have been his true followers and interpreters have not understood the true message, and chaos, suffering and confusion have followed. As it was, the American Missionaries saw Huna and the Hawaiian culture as a direct threat to the North Eastern Christian ethic that they had come to promote. Sadly Huna and the skills of the Kahuna were forced underground, and it is only in the last twenty years that this information has been allowed to emerge once again. For instance the Hawaiians have known about the Conscious, Unconscious and Higher Self or Super Conscious minds for thousands of years, whilst we in the West only became aware of such things a little over a century ago. They were able to explain what Freud had termed repressions, comparing them to the little black bags which the pearl divers store their pearls, in deep dives to the oyster beds on the sea bottom. The Huna had seen the importance of the human mind and its connection to disease. The Kahunas had constructed healing techniques using that mind and this was the stuff Tad James had on offer in far away Hawaii. I had to know more and Tad is a very good salesman and so October 1997 saw me on my way to Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii for my first Huna Intensive. It was tremendous. The training took place in a luxury hotel nestling beside the bright blue Pacific Ocean, multi-coloured and very exotic birds ushered in the dawn from their homes amongst the alien species of tropical trees that clustered around my bedroom window. There was hardly a spare minute throughout the day. The yoga class was at 7am and the Hula Dancing began at 9am. Then in the afternoon and into the evening were the wonderful Huna Teachings. The trip involved a hike across the volcano in brilliant sunshine and a visit to the city of Refuge. It also comprised Dreamtime. This practice involved several hours of chanting, which of course induced trance just before sleep that was said to be the harbinger of very vivid dreams. I do recall this whole trip featured many remarkable dreams. However, the one that really springs forth after the Dreamtime involved my cousin who lived in New Zealand. He had been part of my family who had very much welcomed me to New Zealand in 1985 and again on the subsequent trip in 1989.

14

In the dream he had come to meet me at the airport and we were driving off to some destination. We were in his car, deep in conversation, when he drew up on the side of the road, and simply disappeared. I got out to look for him, but could not find him. I woke up feeling shocked, just like after a nightmare. It took me several hours to get over the shock of losing him like that. The Seventh Insight of The Celestine Prophecy talks of dreams, telling us that bad dreams have the most important messages. As I write this five years later I am reminded of the very useful Dream Interpretation Matrix which was to be found in the Workbook that accompanied The Celestine Prophecy. Dreams often tell us the same message in different ways over time. Like intuition they are insistent and persistent. In times of stress or any other time you desire more information, make a point of writing your dreams down. When you have done this, use the question matrix below to shed more light on it. Studies have shown meditation the day before dreaming increases dream recall. What are the main points of the dream? What details seem significant? Why? What is a one sentence title for this dream? What happens at the beginning? What actions are taken? Who is in the dream? If the people in the dream were parts of yourself, what would they be telling you? What is the overall tone of the dream? How does the dream compare to your life right now? What is the dream telling you about your life that you might be overlooking? What is the outcome of the dream? If you were to live the dream in real life what would you do differently?

I told a friend from Canada, called Irene, whom I had met on this trip of the dream. I was sufficiently uncomfortable to even consider flying on to New Zealand when the Huna experience ended. However, I was also very certain my credit card could not bear that added burden. As things stood I had the hotel in Hawaii to pay and that I was sure would take my up to the limit. This bill bothered me so much that I phoned a friend in London and asked him to pop a couple of hundred extra pounds into my bank account in order to escape any embarrassment when it came to paying the bill. It was all unforgettable and magnificent. Yes, I decided I would be back. On the return flight to London, I was seated next to a lady who had been with us in Kona. She is quite well known mystic, and her name frequently appears in journals, if you know what sort of publications to look in. She took a close look at me as we took our seats:

15

You know, she said. I can see why youre interested in Huna. You look Hawaiian, you know! I didnt know, but then that might have something to do with past lives. What do you think? In November 1997, just a few weeks after getting back to Dublin from that trip to Hawaii I had a telephone call from my other cousin in New Zealand. She told me that her brother, the cousin of whom I had dreamed whilst in Kona had just died in mysterious circumstances. There was talk of suicide. Would my going to New Zealand have made a difference, who knows? Perhaps, in retrospect I should have asked Patrick to put a few extra pounds into the bank so I could not only have paid the hotel bill but flown on to Auckland as well! However, as I put this old dream through the template I notice it has a lot to do with me, too. A part of me was to disappear as a result of the Huna experience in faraway Hawaii. However, one thing was certain. I was going back. Level Two Huna Intensive included, Higher Self Therapy and I did want to learn about that. So back I went in October 1998. Yes, we did learn about Higher Self Therapy, and that is something to really knock your socks off! We trudged across the volcano, yet again. This time it was in the pouring rain. The hotel was different. It was not nearly as nice as the first one. It resembled a huge shopping complex built around a car park. This time the chairs were uncomfortable and I really felt tired in the afternoons. So tired that I had to go off and have a siesta. The teaching timetable was far less extensive and this made the siesta opportunities more realizable. Baby in Chains (at least thats what Irene christened him) who had stood out like some great Teutonic warrior in 1997, fell by the wayside on our trek across the lunar landscape of the volcano. He suffered from diabetes and had forgotten to take his insulin. This was a huge shock to his girlfriend who had no inkling he suffered from that condition. Something was wrong, but what was it? The magic of the previous year had dissipated in a strange way. However out of it all came a huge ping. Coincidences do after all take us to where we need to go. The next step on the path of life! I first came across EFT or perhaps it was TFT whilst having dinner with a friend from Boston at the end of that Huna Training. Everyone else had gone home and I had elected to stay on for a couple of days to enjoy the sunshine and the beach. Patrick from Boston had chosen likewise. On the last evening we elected to have dinner together. He started talking knowledgeably about the Callahan points in Kinesiology whilst I looked on blankly not really knowing what he was talking about. It wasnt until a lot later and thanks to the World Wide Web and my computer that I got an answer to this question. So when I stumbled across an increasing number of postings concerning something called EFT on an e-groups site of which I was a member, I at once wanted to know more. Then post haste, I was guided to Gary Craig's site and one thing, as it invariably does led to another. But Im jumping again. I need to slow down! As I boarded the DC-10 en route to San Francisco and points east I offered up a prayer to Kane, the loving parent within. He is the chief God in the Huna

16

hierarchy. I asked for guidance of where I had to go next. I knew I had to move on, but to where I knew not. It was November, I was back in Ireland and the winter was fast approaching. I was brimming over with Huna know-how and offered an Introduction to Huna Week-end in the middle of the month. There were half a dozen participants and great things were happening. It was Sunday. It was all over and tired after the strenuous week-end I took to my bed early. It was then I started to hemorrhage. The bleeding was severe, and it was very scary. Here was someone who had never experienced serious illness, bleeding copiously. However, other thoughts began also to form in my head. It appeared I had to make a choice. I could remain where I was and die or I could move on and live. I had to choose and I had to choose there and then. I chose life and the bleeding subsided! Perhaps the dream about my cousin had been doubly prophetic. I decided to close Natural Solutions with its handsome location in Monkstown and return to London. It was a quick decision and very swift move. On the 23 rd December I boarded the ferry in Dun Laoghaire and off I went. I spent Christmas in Kendal, which lies on the edge of the English Lake District with my Mother. Prior to Christmas she had had explorative surgery for what appeared to have been a case of hemorrhoids. A couple of days after Christmas I accompanied her to an appointment with a Hospital Consultant, who had now had the results of that biopsy. He pronounced that she had cancer. Treatment would involve daily doses of radiotherapy for thirty sessions. These began for her that January. Every day she would go by ambulance to Preston Hospital and then return to Kendal later in the day. It was certainly a full time job! I had elected to stay with a friend in East Dulwich, until such time as things began to pick up and then I would find a place of my own. Actually, that was not really true. The original understanding had been that Nigel would move to the USA in March 1999 and I would caretake his flat until he decided exactly what he was going to do. No sooner had I walked in the door than he told me that he had cancelled his American plans but I was free to stay on as a lodger. This had not been the agreement at the outset and I was fairly certain I would have changed my plans if I had known of this alteration. My sporadic episodes of rectal bleeding continued and I was sure that unlike my mother this was just a bad case of piles. Still something needed addressing and so I went along to see the local GP. He took one look and stated categorically that whatever I had certainly was not hemorrhoids, and that he would arrange for me to go and see a surgeon at Kings College Hospital without delay. My appointment with Mr. Leather took place a couple of days later. His team poked around and took a sample of the affected tissue and told me they would let me know the results soon as they were available. So nothing happened, there was a deep, deafening silence that lasted three weeks or more. Well thought I, no news is good news! And I continued to do nothing. It was my Mother who persuaded me to ring the GP and inquire as to the whereabouts of the missing results. That did the trick and very shortly

17

afterwards I was back in the hospital in Denmark Hill waiting to see Mr. Leather for a second time. On this occasion it was a case of: no news being bad news. He told me I had cancer and he would operate to remove the tumour as soon as practicable. He didnt operate on me, but thats another story. Suffice to say I now had a job that was going to keep me busy for most of 1999. Lets say this, when Christmas 1999 came about the treatment was over. Both my mother and myself were fine. We were free of the Big C. But the bizarre thing was we both had a similar form of cancer at the same time! I was treated by 25 sessions of radiotherapy and 10 of cobalt. The treatments took place at St.Lukes Hospital Dublin. They had to stop treatment in September because of the radiation burns, which were very painful and made walking uncomfortable. During the three-week recess I went down to Castletownbere in West Cork to see Ula Kinon who had founded the Beara Circle of Natural Medicine in the old convent in the town. The Beara Circle had gone through troubled times, and it looked as if Ula would have to sell and give up her dream of operating a residential Complementary Health Care facility in what must be one of the most beautiful spots on earth! I knew the Beara Circle well, having first visited in 1997 for a Therapists retreat during the Easter of that year. There had been subsequent visits and I had run a Time Lining Training down there in the early summer of 1998. In September 1999 Ula was confronted by various financial problems involving the Old Convent but she was still determined to keep going, if indeed that was possible. I had been interested in the project since I had first seen it, and was more than content to cast in my lot and join up to make the Beara Circle a viable healing centre. Besides, I needed somewhere to live and a place to recuperate and where better place was there than West Cork? If the Beara Circle survived that was a bonus, if it did not that was all right, too! I found a delightful old cottage to rent. It came with a gimcracked and leaky conservatory built onto the kitchen roof which gave stupendous views across the Kenmare River and out to the Skelligs. I could not resist it, and so I moved into Jocelyns house in Ahabrock. My treatment ended sooner that was expected thanks to the Hospital Nurses strike and so in October I found myself living on the Beara Peninsula. I was living in a damp cottage with magnificent sea views from a leaky conservatory that severely interfered with the ecology of the building, located about 8 miles from Castletown itself. This living experience was a whole new encounter with life. There were no street lights, a definite remoteness and a certain amount of loneliness thrown in for good measure. During the first two weeks I barely saw a soul. This was very difficult, but once that watershed was passed it was easy. My idea of a treat was to get in the car, drive down to the town and have a cup of coffee in The Old Bakery. In those early days I did not even have television, but instead listened almost constantly to the classical music station, Lyric FM. The other invaluable companion, was my computer and access to the internet.

18

The Internet has changed how we think and learn. It is possible to access vast swathes of information simply by clicking on line. This is a priceless asset which can be used to keep us up to speed and beyond in whatever our line of interest maybe. Thanks to the Internet, I stumbled as I have said before on a form of therapy called EFT, which led me into the Meridian Psychotherapies. I knew without a shadow of intuitive doubt, this was going to be another golden nugget! Oh, I have omitted, perhaps the most important buddy who appeared on the scene in Beara. Yes, thats Jasper. Jasper is a four-year-old West Highland Terrier, who declared his was looking for a home on the Message Board of the local supermarket just before Christmas 1999. I phoned the number, there was no reply and went away to spend Christmas in Kendal. I came back in January, and the notice was still pinned to the board. I tried to phone once more, and again the same result, No answer! I mentioned the notice to Maggie who is a very doggy friendly person who seems to know everybody in Castletownbere. Oh! she said, Thats Jasper! and a meeting was arranged. Jaspers person had just moved into a corporation house at the west end of the town. Seemingly the corporation had a rule that permitted two but not three dogs in its rental properties. She had three dogs and one had to go. Jasper was chosen to depart the nest! It was a beautiful sunny afternoon in latish January when I walked up towards the house. The road was closed because they were digging it up. Jaspers person was walking down the road to meet me, with this little white dog on a rope. Coming in the other direction was a big Labrador who bounded up to Jasper. In the following furore there was a lot of yapping and the next thing I knew was Jasper was in his persons arms and she seemed to be bleeding. This was not a very auspicious introduction. The last complication I wanted was a yappy little dog that got into fights with others, particularly big dogs. I came home with Jasper. A little white dog whohad a very big ego. If you have any problems, just give me a ring and Ill take him along to the vets, was her parting comment. How could I possibly let that happen to such a charming little creature? So weve been together ever since.

CHAPTER TWO
The Meridian Psychotherapies: EFT, TFT, ETC.
As I said, I first came across EFT or was it TFT whilst having dinner with my friend from Boston, Patrick, in Kona, Hawaii at the end of my second Huna Experience. Remember how he started talking knowledgeably about the Callahan points in kinesiology and I hadnt got a clue of what he was talking about. However, later the internet came to my rescue. For this world of cyberspace made it relatively easy to stumble across an increasing number of postings concerning something called EFT. I was curious and at once wanted to know more. Then post haste I was guided to Gary Craig's site and one thing as it invariably does led, to another. Sometime afterwards my professional organization, the ICHP( Institute of Clinical Hypnotherapy & Psychotherapy) here in Ireland was advertising a training in EFT by Dr. Tam Llewellyn-Edwards and his wife Mair. This gave me the opportunity to get my official certification. I had studied a lot of Gary Craigs stuff beforehand and sent Tam a really cheeky e-mail before the training, asking if he was going to teach me anything I didnt already know. Tam did not rise to the challenge but sensibly pointed out there was always more to learn. And along I went! However, before that there was the beginning. I wanted to know all about Roger Callahan, the founder of Thought Field Therapy, and therefore the originator of all this stuff. He seemed to hail from a very orthodox background in mainstream psychology. After all he had been an associate professor of psychology at one of the Universities in Ohio, but this assistant professor had studied kinesiology with one of the founding fathers of the genre, George Goodheart and had sat at the feet the founder of behavioral kinesiology, John Diamond. George Goodheart is a chiropractor. He is still alive and still practicing and hes in his 80s. In 1964 he was working as a chiropractor and his puzzle was postural distortion. This occurs in cases where the head is tilted to one side or another, there is a high shoulder and high hip. He found through a series of muscle tests that the condition was the result of weak muscles on one side of the body overcompensating and causing a distortion on the other. Moreover he also gleaned that by using the appropriate therapy he could strengthen the muscles and the postural distortion would change. Kinesiology is a form of diagnosis using muscle testing as a primary feedback mechanism. It is used to examine how a persons body is functioning. One of its mainframes of existence is the triad of health. Health can be compared to an equilateral triangle. To exist there has to be a balance between the chemical, the mental/emotional and the structural. This is exactly what the Chinese have been saying for ages. However, since its inception in 1964 Kinesiology has taken many forms. John Thie gave the world a form of muscle balancing which he called Touch For Health, Alan Beardall came up with Clinical

20

Kinesiology, the Australian, John Diamond was the founder of a psychological variant that he called Behavioural Kinesiology whilst the Dennisons are famous for their variation of Educational Kinesiology known as Brain Gym. This was serious stuff in my book. Chiropractors and alternative therapists study kinesiolgy but left-brain patricians from the hallowed realms of academia do not. Instead they have a tendency of scoffing at things they do not understand and muttering darkly about: Its all unscientific. So, I began to take some notice. Then somebody sent me an audio cassette, and on it was the voice of Roger Callahan telling the story of Mary. The Mary story has been bandied about so often and in so many different forms that it has become almost apocryphal, but its still a good yarn, if not an excellent one to share with clients. Roger tells it himself in: The International Electronic Journal of Innovations in the Study of the Traumatization Process and Methods of Reducing or Eliminating Related Human Suffering. Vol.3:1; Article 5. Mary a forty-two year old woman had been going to see Dr. Callahan for approximately 18 months because of her intense fear of water (hydrophobia). Mary reported that the fear had existed as far back as she could remember and did not think it was associated with a trauma. This fear was so intense that the poor woman was unable to sit and watch a television programme that showed a body of water. Having a bath in the minimum measure of water was an agony for her. Even rain storms caused her to panic, as she was sure the water was out to get her in some way. There are many ways to treat phobias. The more old-fashioned Freudian type analysts look for a causative repression and the other school, the Behaviourists, set about exposing you to your phobia with the intention of breaking the fear response. The latter is the preferred mainstream treatment for phobias. The Behaviourists believe a phobia is a learned response, and anything that can be learned can be unlearned. So therapists employ techniques that involve gradually exposing the phobic to whatever is feared. The exposure may take place in real life or in the imagination of the client/patient, but it needs to be done gradually. Callahan styled himself as a pioneer in cognitive and behaviour therapies. He had more than thirty years experience in psychotherapy and cognitive and behaviour therapies. In his treatment of Mary he used suggestion, placebo, clinical hypnosis, behavioral therapy, rational-emotive techniques, systematic desensitization, distraction, progressive relaxation, client centred therapy and exposure. None of them broke Marys phobia. However, the point of this Eureka is Roger Callahan was growing more and more disillusioned with the efficacy of all these treatments and was now open to a more effective modality. Mary drove out to Roger Callahans house for her sessions. He would begin in the office where he taught her relaxation techniques, regularly induce hypnosis and challenge her deep-seated beliefs about the threats posed by water. The other half of the session took place on the deck beside the swimming pool. This was the successful part of the therapy. After a year and a half she was able, albeit uncomfortably, to sit beside the pool and dangle her feet in the water. She usually left her sessions with a headache and was

21

still plagued by nightmares about water. But she was determined to overcome the problem and seemed resolute to do anything to conquer this intense phobia that was ruling her life. As we have said before, Callahan is not a usual man. He had studied knesiology, and kinesiology owes its origins to the acupressure and acupuncture techniques developed by Chinese Medicine. We learn later that Acupressure is possibly over ten thousand years old. I have always reasoned that if these Oriental techniques did not work they would not have lasted for such a very long period of time. Unlike the baby they would have been thrown out with the bath water! As an interesting aside there is evidence that the Chinese were not the first people to come up with acupuncture. In 1991 a 5,200-year corpse was discovered in the Oetz Valley which lies between Austria and Italy. The well preserved body had been entombed in a glacier. There were 15 markings on the back and legs which matched points used in acupuncture. The marks delineated on the spine were points used to combat back pain according to Dr.Frank Bahr, President of the German Academy of Acupuncture. There was a tattoo on the left ankle and another on the back which would be the points drawn on to treat rheumatism. Karin Taylor writing for the InfoBeat News Service on 19 th October 1998 had this to say: The iceman, nicknamed Oetzi by his finders and who is thought to have died of exhaustion at the age of about 45, suffered from acute arthritis, worms and diahorrea. Ancient Chinese acupuncture is thought to have originated in about 1,000BC and scientists said the icemans therapeutic tattoos were applied in 3,200 BC. Acupuncture may not have been the invention of the Chinese, but the question remains what led both the Chinese and the pre-historic Europeans to this remarkable discovery? The Taoists will say these techniques are not of European origin. They have a story that is quite similar to the Hawaiians, which claims that about 12,000 years ago a strange race of people arrived in China. They were very tall and they wore odd clothing that was quite unlike anything the local people were wearing. Their clothes had a metallic texture and it was from this they took their name, which was Sons of Reflected Light or Fankuang Tzu. No one seemed to know where these people came from, but they certainly came on a mission, because very quickly they assembled as many skilled and intelligent people as they could and began to teach them skills that were quite unknown in the China of that time. Like the Hawaiian story the Chinese people were taught many talents. These included silk weaving, pottery making and an array of healing techniques. It was these giants who introduced the Chinese to acupressure, which incidentally was the forerunner of acupuncture, and not the other way around as some people believe. The Chinese people took these skills all over their vast land and more recently out into the wider world. Curiously and very similarly to the Pleiadian visitors to the lost world of Mu

22

after several centuries as teachers the Sons of Reflected Light simply disappeared. And that takes us back to Dr. Callahans discovery, does it not? Kinesiology uses the meridians, or energy channels just as acupuncturists do. However, they dont use needles to stimulate or sedate the points along those channels. We know he had studied kinesiology and understood when Mary told him that whenever she was faced with water she had an uncomfortable feeling in the pit of the stomach. He knew if you look at the path of the stomach meridian which logically could be linked to an uncomfortable feeling in the pit of the stomach, you will see the stomach meridian begins under the eye. It does a circle up to the forehead and then descends down the face passing between the eye and the nose .It continues down the chin to the neck where it does a little jump out to the edge of the clavicle and then moves down the chest via the nipple. From there it travels inwards towards the lower rib cage and over the stomach and pubic area, running down the legs and finishes up on the outside edge of the second toe (little toe side). What then is a meridian? This protocol takes its name from the meridians, and it would be helpful to know more.
Gary Craig, the founder of EFT, in his tape series has this to say: The ancient Chinese, and many other ancient cultures, believed that we all have an "energy body" and that energy flows through this body along lines called "meridians". They believed that "blockage" in the meridians caused illness. They identified many different points on the physical body, which, when stimulated, seemed to impact on the energy body and thus influence health. Modern acupuncture and acupressure as well as reflexology and other energy therapies have their genesis in TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine). You may be surprised to hear that Western science has finally caught up with this severalthousand-year-old knowledge. Dr Kim Bong Han of the University of Pyongang in North Korea conducted a comprehensive series of experiments that brought him to the conclusion that the meridians were composed of a type of histological tissue which had previously passed un-noticed by other scientists. Dr. Kim discovered the structure and function of the meridian system to be totally different from that of the lymphatic, circulatory and nervous systems. He noted the meridians are channels (diameter 20-50 millimicrons) that are symmetrical and bilateral and which exist beneath the surface of the skin. They have a thin membranous wall and are filled with a transparent, colourless fluid. Each of the main meridians intricately develops subsidiary branches some of which supply adjacent area with energy while others ultimately reach the surface of the skin. Dr. Stephen T.Chang The Great Tao (Tao Publishing 1985) The first record of the system in a western scientific journal appeared in the February 1937 edition of The British Medical Journal. The article by Sir Thomas Lewis claimed he had

23

discovered an unknown nervous system that was unrelated to either the sensory or autonomic nervous systems. It did not comprise a network of nerves but rather a matrix of thin lines. The report went relatively un-noticed but certainly bore out what the Chinese had been saying for aeons. German studies point out how we can e easily measure changes in electrical resistance at acupuncture points, work which led to the development of the electronic point locator. In the mid-eighties French researchers also proved the existence of the meridian system. Vernejoul set about testing for the existence of a previously "unknown" circulatory system by injecting a radioactive tracer dye into acupuncture points. (Vernejoul P, et al (1985). Etude des meridiens d'acupuncture par les traceurs radioctifs. Bulletin of the Academy of National Medicine (Paris), 169, 1071- 1075.) The resulting pattern of dye clearly showed the traditional meridian lines. When the dye was injected into non-acupuncture points, no lines appeared. The lines were claimed not to correspond with any circulatory system previously known to science, but nevertheless were physical channels through tissue and organs.

These meridians, and there are fourteen of them, conduct Chi (China), Prana (India or Tibet), Yesod (Jewish Kabala), Ki (Japan) or Energy (English) along this circulatory pathway. Chi circulates along these meridian (ching). Twelve of the meridians are bilateral, meaning they have a uniform position on either side of the body. Chi flows along the lines in a specific direction. In an attempt to ease Marys discomfort at the pit of her stomach, Callahan tapped on stomach 1, located on the bony bit under the eye. The reaction was certainly not what he had expected, or perhaps it was. I let Roger Callahan complete the story in his own words: A strange look immediately came upon her face and she said, Its gone! Confused, Roger asked, Whats gone? The awful feeling in the pit of my stomachits gone! I dont think Im afraid of water any more, for the first time in my life I feel fine when I think about water! He was skeptical that something as simple as tapping his patient under the eye with the end of a finger should have removed a complex and deep-seated phobia in a matter of seconds, and was anxious to put it to the test. Then Roger Callahan led Mary from his office to the swimming-pool. Instead of her usual reluctance and holding back, she dashed out the door and ran to the pool. He was frightened and confused about what was occurring and ran after her as she hastened towards the pool. She was already near the deep end, a territory which she never ventured before and she stopped when she heard the alarmed cries of her therapist. Mary, Look out! Dr. Callahan, dont worry, I know I dont know how to swim, Im not going to jump in the pool. A year later he received a postcard from Mary. On it was a picture of a ship, she explained that she and a group of friends had gone off on a cruise with no sign of the phobia.

24

The nightmares vanished immediately after the treatment and have not returned. Sixteen years of follow up, support the conclusion that Marys cure has endured over time. (Callahan 1993) Now thats what I call elegant. What an ecstatically easy way of getting rid of a phobia. Simply tapping at the end of an acupuncture meridian was really compelling as far as I was concerned. However, like so many things in life, Rogers experience with Mary was serendipity, and day-to-day reality is a little more complex. So over the next number of months he went on to develop a number of additional procedures, because merely tapping under the eye did not work in all cases. These procedures allowed him and others to obtain a high degree of success with phobias and other anxiety states. He called these tapping measures, algorithms. These recipes could be quite complex but were designed to address most issues involving negative emotions. As a result of these findings he came to the conclusion that all negative emotions were the result of a disruption of the bodys energy system. This was deeply reassuring, persuading me that all things I had studied and no longer practised were after all not a great big waste of time and energy! Everything I had done was a preparation for the next step and anyway how could it not have been? In the early 1990s an engineer and one time Stanford Football star, Gary Craig, came along and took Rogers TFT Training. Although he was not a therapist he was mightily impressed by what he learned in Thought Field Therapy. He was so impressed that he determined to take TFT and simplify it. And make it available to the world at a cost all could afford. He asked Roger if he could do this, and perhaps to Callahans disadvantage the founder of TFT agreed. The result was EFT or Emotional Freedom Techniques. This methodology dispensed with the more complicated algorithms, which by the way also got round the legal quagmire of diagnosis. This is a particular problem in the United States. American Law states that only medically qualified persons are considered competent to diagnose. Who is medically qualified to make these diagnoses is a thorny issue, and in some cases has led to prosecutions of those accused of practicing medicine without a licence. Gary Craig was not recognized by the American Psychological Association, so to avoid what could be a difficult issue, he cut out the diagnosis part of the algorithms and made the entire process simpler. He reasoned, it was a quick enough process to tap the end of the acupuncture meridians, starting with the bladder point located at the inside edge of the eyebrow and work through all fourteen meridians, ending up at the small intestine point situated on the out side edge of the hand. More recently he has simplified the process still further by tapping the eyebrow (EB), side of the eye (SE), under the eye (UE), under the nose (UN), beneath lower lip (LL), the collar bone (CB), under the arm (UA), and finishing up with the top of the head (TH) which corresponds to Governing Vessel 20. He argues that the hand points can be ignored if there has been a significant reduction in the intensity of the negative emotion being tapped upon when the face and upper body points have been stimulated in this way.

25

But more importantly it made the process simpler. I have always been fond of the KISS approach. Translated KISS means Keep it simple sweetheart! A real beauty of EFT and many of the other Meridian Therapies is that you can do them yourself, on yourself. In a context this is extremely empowering. In therapy the client sees the therapist and deals with the major issues. It is generally helpful to have the objectivity of a trained outsider who is able to see beyond the trees to the bigger picture of the forest itself. This poses the question of what is the purpose of therapy? 1) Certainly it is not to derail the client and cause great stabs of pain. The desired outcome is to reduce the Subjective Units of Disturbance level (SUDS) to 0. If we do not achieve a 0 there is the likelihood of the negative emotion states returning. 2) The second purpose of therapy is help with the belief system that keeps recreating the negative emotion or limiting belief that has already been created. 3) The third purpose is very often to teach coping skills. The energy psychotherapies are a boon, because they can be easily taught and then provide a tool which can be used to alleviate fear or anything else for that matter, that occurs in the big, wide, wonderful world in which most people inhabit, as opposed to the comfortable security of a therapists office! 4) The fourth and perhaps most important purpose of therapy is to bring people to cause in their own lives. I explain this phenomenon by using a metaphor about little sailing boats. Imagine there is a little sailing boat out there on the bay. It doesnt have a rudder, so what do you suppose happens to it? Yes, it gets blown to wherever the wind decides to take it. Do you think you could successfully and easily sail across to the other side of the bay in that boat? Now that boat, like some people is at effect. However, there is another boat out there on the bay and it has a rudder. If you were in it, you could steer it wherever you like to go. Now which boat would you prefer to use to sail across the bay? This second boat is said to be at cause, so if you were to choose which would you prefer to be at cause or at effect? The most important thing anyone can achieve in a therapeutic or Life Coaching situation is to bring the client to cause. This ensures the individual takes responsibility for his/her own life. When someone is truly responsible there can be no more blaming, and when there is no blaming there are no victims. To put the world right in order, we must first put the nation in order, to put the nation in order, we must first put the family in order, to put the family in order we must first cultivate our personal life, we must first set our hearts right. Confucius It is important that the practitioner teaches the client the EFT process. This gives him/her the resources to address issues as and when they arise. This is life-changing clout. Remember the Chinese proverb? Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, but teach him how to fish and you feed him for life.

26

This is the goal in EFT and the Meridian Therapies. Therapists are teaching their clients to become their own therapists. Isnt that deliciously radical? The process is above all, simple and its easily teachable. The video-CD, entitled, EFT For Newcomers which Gary Craig made in the autumn of 2001 describes Emotional Freedom Techniques as a form of acupuncture without needles. I have heard it described, also as an oriental form of hypnotherapy. The first step is to tune into the emotional issue that you wish to resolve. The trick is to turn the issue into a statement, which depicts it in its entirety. Then tap on the points until the emotional sting has completely subsided. You dont even have to believe in the process for it to work, because what is happening is a physical process not a mental/emotional one. Gary Craig uses the metaphor of sticking a screwdriver into the wiring at the back of a TV set to explain the phenomenon. If you stick a screwdriver into the back of a television set, you will cause a short circuit. The picture will be distorted and the sound will crackle because of the static created by the short. He compares tuning into a trauma to the zzzt of electrical disorder created by plunging the screwdriver into the wires at the back of the TV. The excess emotion of the trauma is like a short-circuit. Remember; All negative emotions are a result of a disruption in the bodys energy system. When the interference is corrected the zzzt disappears. In EFT the interference is corrected by tapping on the end points of the meridians. The result is that once it has been rectified, You cannot get upset by the problem even if you tried! So what are these points then? There are 14 of them : Ten of them take their names from parts of the body (bladder, gall bladder, kidney etc). The Pericardium is a part of the body, that bit that protects the heart. It is also known as Circulation Sex. The other nonbody part is the Triple Warmer, which relates to the thyroid. These twelve meridians are as we have said before bi-lateral. There are two others that serve as overall governors that are not bi-lateral. They are the Governing Vessel and the Central Vessel, sometimes known as the Conception Vessel. The Governing Vessel (GV) looks after all the masculine Yang Meridians and the Conception Vessel is in charge of the feminine, Yin channels. Each Yin channel is paired with a specific Yang one. Thus there are 6 Yang and 6 Yin Meridians in the body. The Chinese suggest that the function of the Yang organs is somehow connected with tasks and processes lying outside the body, and the Ying connection is one that lies inside the body. The energy flows in a specific direction in each of these cases. Thus there are 6 centrifugal meridians where the energy flows down in the direction of the earth and six centripetal meridians where the energy flows up in the direction of the heavens.

27

Yin is: Matter Dark Cold Wet Water Moon Receptive Interior Front Negative Inside Deep Hypofuctional

Yang is: Energy Light Hot Dry Fire Sun Active Exterior Back Positive Outside Superficial Hyperfunctional.

It might be a surprise to learn then that all Yin meridians are to be found to the front of limbs of the body and the Yang meridians run to the back.

Chi Energy:
The main difference between Western Medicine and Oriental Medicine is the basic theory of the Chinese that theres a life force called Chi Energy and that this life force flows within us in a harmonious, balanced way. This harmony and balance is health. If this life force is not flowing properly, then there is disharmony and imbalance. This is illness. Diane M. Connolly: Traditional Acupuncture: The Law of the 5 Elements The Centre for Traditional Acupuncture, Columbia Maryland 1975 If you catch one cold in your lifetime then you are physically sick, and if you lose your temper once in your lifetime than you are mentally sick. Ancient Taoist saying taken from the Taoist Ways of Healing by Chee Soo. Chi Po said: The utmost in the art of healing can be achieved where there is unity. The Emperor inquired: What is meant by unity? Chi Po answered:

When the minds of people are closed and wisdom is locked out they remain tied to disease. Yet their feelings and desires should be investigated and made known, their wishes and desires should be followed; and when it becomes apparent that those who have attained spirit and energy are flourishing and prosperous, while those perish who lose their energy.

28

A Conversation between Chi Po an acupuncture Master and the Yellow Emperor, from the ancient classic Nei Ching circa 3000 BC So in a very few words the essence of wellness in Chinese Medicine is Balance or Harmony. Lets face it both hot and cold are extremes, and thus are uncomfortable. Warm is comfortable because unlike hot or cold it is not extreme; it is a place of balance. To understand the meridians we also need to be sure we understand the difference between Yin and Yang. These two contrasting poles are the unifying and opposing forces of the Universe. Yin signifies the negative, that which draws in or back. It is cold, dark, thin and feminine. Yang is quite the opposite. It is positive, expansive, light, hot and masculine. Everything that is Yin can become Yang when taken to its extreme, and vice versa of course. If you throw a ball hard into the air at some point it will stop rising and start falling, thanks to gravity. The rising motion of the ball is Yang, but when it falls back towards the ground it becomes Yin. The Governing Meridian has the quality of strength and it oversees the other six Yang Meridians. The Conception or Central Vessel enjoys the quality of nurturance, which we might agree is a feminine characteristic. This meridian looks after the six Yin meridians in the body. Unlike the other twelve meridians which are bi-lateral, these two are unilateral. To understand the important difference between Yin and Yang we need a story.

The Story of the Princess Yin and the Prince Yang:

Once long, long ago there lived in the Imperial City a beautiful princess, the daughter of the King. Her eyes were almond shaped and so gently coloured. Her fair hair swept down her back in cascades. As a lady of the court her demeanour was regal, yet she knew full well to avert her gaze when people other than her immediate family came into her presence. Many looked on her with wonder and whispered about whom the courtiers would choose for her in marriage. It was rumoured than more than one suitor had presented himself but had been soundly rejected by the King. The King, you see, listened to his daughter and not the sea of fawning orderlies who surrounded him from break of day to the last thing at night. Often he would sit in his chambers and secretly observe the fair princess Yin, as she toyed with her food or sat quietly on those rare nights when he could cross the courtyard to her quarters so they could be alone together, she working at her fine cross stitch and elegant embroidery, and he was free to talk. To him she seemed so sad as she carefully worked with her needle. It was as if she had a secret. A deep, dark secret, as indeed she had. Her secret lived far away from the Court on the plains that lay in the centre of their country. He was tall and lithe, a real warrior who rode his horse across the plains as if he were flying with the wind itself as he galloped off into the east towards where the sun rose. The warm vibrancy of the sun, seemed to give him life itself . Yes, she loved Prince Yang very much, but he came from a family of soldiers who had once betrayed the Imperial family, and as a result could not be trusted. There was no way her father would ever consent to a marriage between the two of them. Yin let a small tear trickle down her cheek as she sat at her needlework, remembering their meeting when he had come to the city on a diplomatic mission. She felt a little cold as she remembered his warmth and vibrancy. She recalled with a sigh, their meeting in the Palace orchard on the night of a full moon. How he had come to her, his eyes bright with passion and declared his undying love. She listened enraptured as every word sank in. Yes, she too felt the love. A love that lay deep inside her, and she knew only her Prince could reach that secret

29

place where that love lay. She often lay awake picturing him in her arms. Above all else she wanted to love him and take care of him and be with him. But she knew this was not to be. Not yet, anyway, but each time her father brought her a young man whom he felt would be suitable she was able to persuade him that some fault lay with the suitor and escape from the arranged marriage. She knew she could not tell her father, who loved her very much, about her meeting with the Prince Yang. How light as a feather he had scaled the orchard wall, and easily jumped down on the other side. A meeting such as this would bring dishonour to her, and her father would surely seek to punish her beautiful Prince. His anger would be immense at the insult to his family, and he would without doubt ask for the Princes death in revenge. That Prince of hers, he who had ridden away that night to the outer reaches of the kingdom was forbidden to her. He had gone quickly in order to protect her honour. Positive in his intent that he would certainly see her once again. She had heard some of the ladies of the court gossiping about her brave soldier, who it is said, struck four men dead with a single blow of his sword. It was rumoured too, that many other ladies like the Princess Yin had fallen in love with this young man. They too wanted to possess him, marry him and have his children who would be unquestionably beautiful like he. It was said that he had reciprocated to some of these amorous advances. Some said the Princess Zang had been sent away from her family castle high in the hills because of her infatuation with the Prince. But Yin knew this was idle talk, the words of jealous women. Deep in her she had her secret, and nobody could take it away. All she needed was time, time to work out a scheme that would allow the Prince Yang to be hers forever. So she sent him a message via one of her faithful servants. Many weeks later the weary messenger rode into Yangs camp, which was situated close to the Mongolian border. He received the Princesss letter graciously and read it slowly by the light of the campfire. As he read a smile flitted across his face and then he pondered seriously. His soldiers watched his shadow as he walked up and down across his tent all night through. As the dawn broke he summoned his generals to war council and before the sun had reached the mid-heaven his army had broken camp and was marching across the plains in the direction of the Imperial City. It was a long journey to the capital, and soon the King heard that Yangs army was advancing towards his capital. The King was furious, as this reckless behaviour on the part of the impetuous Yang seemed to confirm his deepest fears. You cannot trust that family. They are all traitors, every one of them! Now this Yang has turned against me! Daily the ruler received intelligence reports of how the rebel army was moving swiftly towards the city. He knew the capital was impregnable and he was certain his troops would soon overcome the nuisance. But he was a cautious man and a seed of doubt began to worry him. In the evenings he would go as usual to his daughters quarters as she sat stitching and confide in her his doubts and anxieties. Strangely the wily princess did not attempt to comfort her father but gently massaged his worries so they grew greater. Soon Yangs army was camped outside the Imperial City itself and the two sides prepared for a great battle. On the eve of the battle old Ming one of the gardeners in the Imperial City was watering the roses close to the Princesss private quarters when he saw an old stooped woman limping towards him. She looked harmless enough and he took little notice of her. It was unusual to see strangers in the royal gardens, but the gardener had thoughts of his own. He had great fears for the safety of his son, who would be in the battle the next day. That night there was a terrible storm. Hideous peals of thunder clapped like cannon fire and great sheets of lightening turned night into eerie day. It was as if a great battle was being fought in the heavens. The rain lashed against the stout walls of the capital whilst lakes of water appeared from nowhere. These pools were whipped into life by a raging wind. Very few of the townspeople slept at all due to terrible clamour of the storm. The King like many of his citizens rose well before dawn. He hurried out onto the battlements so he would be with his advisors as the battle began. However, as the Sun rose they were astonished to see that instead of a great army waiting to begin a fierce battle there was an immense field of wheat situated where the soldiers should have been, and instead of the cacophony of war there was a great silence, an overwhelming peace.

30

As the King turned away astounded by what he saw, three of Princess Yins ladies in waiting came running up to him. The princess is nowhere to be found! They searched the palace and the city, but could not find a trace of her. The story would end here, and remain one of those unsolved mysteries that men would puzzle over as time unfolded. However, shortly afterwards an old man was to be often seen in the city. Some said he was a magician and some proclaimed him to be a great healer whilst others said he was just a simple gardener. He said all he could remember was the night of the great storm before the terrible battle that never was, but might have been. He told those who would listen that on the night in question he was in the Imperial Garden tending the roses, and he went to a forbidden place close to Yins summer house and there he saw a beautiful young couple making love. As their passion grew the wind rose in strength, as the young man groaned in ecstasy the thunder pealed across the night, as the young woman panted in delight the lightning flashed across the sky. He said he must have fainted due to the intensity of the experience for when he awoke the couple had gone and the dawn was struggling into the sky. However, in the summerhouse in place of the fervent lovers sat a monk with features like an angel. He beckoned the old gardener to approach and as he did so he handed him two ivory figurines. One was male and the other female. These figures each had seven lined patterns etched on them, and along the blueprint there were a series of points. The monk offered the figures to Ming saying: Take these and bring them to the world, for if you understand the harmony that comes from balancing these lines of chi, you will understand the secret of love, peace and good health that you must share with your brothers and sisters. Before the old man could thank the monk, he had gone and where the blameless one had been sitting there lay a parchment bound in leather. A paper that explained these lines or meridians, what they did, and how they worked. Strangely underneath the parchment lay another paper, this one appeared to be a letter. It bore the Imperial Crest and it read: My Sweetest Yang, Help me, lest they never know. Your adoring Yin.

Breathlessness. Deep Psychological Reversal (P.R). I consider this to be the most important PR Point. Dr. Peter Mandel the discoverer of Colourpuncture found through KIRLIAN photography that it is impossible to control or regulate any disease before first removing the blockage at the Corpus Callosum. If the blockage is situated to the left it is an indication of emotional trauma and if it is located to the right it shows a physical trauma. He maintains that these blockages are almost always in place before the end of puberty. This is the point to tap for Embarrassment & Shyness. Balancing Governing Vessel (GV) often increases energy, gives clarity of mind and promotes spiritual upliftment. It is a useful point to tap and treat embarrassment. GV 20 Top of Head (TH) in Chinese is called the hundred meetings point because of its significance as a major connecting and energy centre of the meridian network. (Good place to finish a treatment because it is energising and thus ends the intervention on a high note).

Very responsive to hypnosis and self-hypnosis. Martyn Dawes the author of Mind Over Weight believes this is an important trauma point and tapping it releases past trauma.. You can benefit from this by zipping up the Central vessel and repeating an affirmation such as : I fully and completely approve and accept myself, just as I am! Repeat the suggestion three times and then click your fingers to lock it into place in the unconscious mind. Zipping up the CV also helps prevent colds. Be sure to do it with the onset of the first symptoms. The affirmation needs to be changed to: My immune system works well and I resist colds. . 6) C.B. (Collar Bone) = Quality: Gentle Spirit. Gary Craig, outlines a simple five step procedure in his Video-Cd, EFT For Newcomers.

First you make a mental movie of a specific event you want to put right. It is recommended if you are working on yourself that this should be very specific. I felt hurt and humiliated when my father called me a sissy in front of all my friends at my eighth birthday party. Whilst something like: My father always put me down whilst I was a child! will not do because the issue is made up of many, many specific events. It is better to have somebody else work with you on these more complex problems. An outsider has a healthy objectivity which will be lacking in those who were closely involved in the episode. Secondly you need to give your film a title. Write this down as it will serve as the reminder phrase when you start tapping the points. Thirdly you just run the movie on the screen of your own mind. As you do that, notice its intensity, and give it a rating between 0 and 10. A 0 rating indicates the concern is completely flat, meaning you are at peace with it. 10 on the other hand shows maximum intensity, and everything else lies in between these two extremes. This rating is known as the S.U.D.S. this translates to Subjective Units of Disturbance. It is important to emphasise the intensity of feeling relates to how you feel about the event now, and not how you think it was back then in the past! Fourthly you come up with an affirmation of the problem like this example: Even though (title of your movie) I approve and accept myself just as I am. The affirmation is known as the Set-Up Phrase. It could look something like this: Even though (my father called me a sissy at my eighth birthday party) I accept and approve of myself just as I am! You need to repeat the set-up phrase three times, whilst tapping the Karate Chop point at the side of the hand, or rubbing the sore spots located between the notch in the collar bone and the first ribs. You cant miss it. Its a lymphatic point and if you rub in the area with your thumbs you are sure to find the points in question. Why? They are called the sore spot because they are tender. This eliminates PR or Psychological Reversal which I will talk about later. The fifth step is to tap about 6 or 7 times on the points with the tips of the index fingers. Start with the eyebrow, and as you tap, repeat the reminder phrase to yourself or out loud. Move to the side of the eye and then under the eye. Dont forget to repeat the title as you go. From there move to the point under the nose and follow on with the lower lip, and proceed on to and tap the collar bone. This is an important area as the kidney meridian determines whether or not energies are flowing in the correct direction. Next, find spleen 17, located approximately 4 inches below the armpit and give it a good seeing to! This too is a lymphatic point and it might be sore because the lymph tends to congest easily. The subsequent point is the liver, located under the right breast. Finish off by patting GV 20 located at the top of the head. Stop and reassess the SUDS. Have they reduced? Are they flat? Is the issue at peace? If the answer is a definitive Yes, youve finished the job, and well done! If it is no you need to continue onto the finger points. Start by tapping the outside of the thumbnail. As this is the lung meridian, it might be a good idea to take a couple of deep breaths whilst repeating your reminder phrase. Next comes the Index Finger. The point is on the outside, or thumb side. This is the large intestine meridian, which is useful for dissipating

guilt and seeking forgiveness for yourself or granting it to others. To forgive does not mean to condone but to let go. If you can do this it will frequently lead to resolution and a swift reduction of SUDS. Then its the turn of the middle finger, skip the ring finger and progress to the baby finger which corresponds to the heart channel and finish up by tapping the fleshy side of the hand, or the Karate Chop point. Perhaps, another patting of the crown of the head to bring all those points controlled by the Governing Vessel into play, and youre done. Are the SUDS as flat as a pancake now? If not you need to proceed to the 9 Gamut Sequence. But first lets recap.

A treatment involves tapping the points 1-9. Then check for SUDS. If not truly flat continue with 10-14 (Hand points). Again finish with TH. If still not truly flat continue with 9 Gamut Sequence.

The set-up phrase changes as the SUDS reduce. You have tapped from points 1-9. You stop there and reassess the SUDS. Have they reduced? If the answer is Yes, you now want to change the set-up phrase a little. Even though I am still a bit embarrassed when I remember my father called me a sissy when I was eight, I still approve and accept myself just as I am. If the SUDS havent reduced at all, either you have the wrong set-up phrase or else there is evidence of a major Psychological Reversal. You need to see the section on Reversals, in that case! When anything doesnt work, there is often an amazingly simple solution. It is drink a glass of water! Both the client and the therapist drink a glass of water. Its as simple as that! You will be agreeably surprised to discover the number of occasions this simple technique gets you out of a hole. Why is this? Most people are severely dehydrated. As a species we comprise water. Many believe they have an adequate water intake because they drink lots of fluids such as tea, coffee, soft drinks and alcohol. Its true these beverages contain water, but they also contain dehydrating agents, which negate the hydrating benefits of plain, old water. Dr. Fereydoon Batmanghelidj, wrote an interesting book entitled: Your Bodys Many Cries For Water.1 The doctor who originates from Iran reminds us that as a species we originated from water. We moved from being water borne creatures to those that lived on land. The species had to adapt to a new environment. To develop further these living things had to venture beyond the safety of their own environment. For the earlier water dwelling species, adventure beyond their known boundaries, constituted great stress in case they dry up. This stress established a dominant physiology for crisis management of waterSince every function of the body is monitored and pegged to the flow of water, water management is the only way of making sure that adequate amounts of water and its transported nutrients first reach the more vital organs that have to confront and deal with any new stress. This mechanism becomes more and more established for survival against natural enemies and predators. It is the ultimate operative system for survival in fight or flight situations. When we look at Reversal we shall also look at Triple Warmer in Overwhelm. Its interesting to note that the flight or fight mechanism is

governed by the Triple Warmer meridian. By drinking water we can often switch the flow of energy and not be surprised when things begin to work, as they should, and not as they shouldnt. This is not unexpected as water is required as a conductor for the electrical impulses that make so much of the bodys nervous system functional. However, lets go back to the tapping recipe! There is an alternative which is a slower tapping routine: As you tap, bring to mind as many thoughts/insights as you can. Once a spot seems to be exhausted move onto the next one. You need to look and listen carefully. This is called sensory acuity. You will be alerted when to move on by a sharp intake of breath, a facial flush, a relaxation in muscle tension or some other seemingly subtle change. David Fernstein 1 suggests a method whereby you tap ten times on the meridian point and then take a deep breath and tap a further ten times. This is repeated throughout the sequence. The entire treatment looks like a giant

Starting at the Eyebrow and ending up at the K.C. Spot. Of course if the Subjective Units of Disturbance decrease to a 0 before the round is complete..Stop and check. You might well have done the job! If on the other hand the SUDS have not come down to a nice, peaceful 0, try the: 9 Gamut Point Procedure: It is a brain balancing exercise, which takes the message into all quadrants of the brain and very often squashes a troublesome subject. This involves tapping Triple Warmer 2, which lies between the knuckle of the baby finger and the ring finger whilst. 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) 7) 8) 9) Closing the Eyes Opening the Eyes Looking down to the right without moving the head Looking down to the left without moving the head Circling the eyes clockwise in a complete rotation of 360, without moving the head. Circling eyes anticlockwise in a complete rotation of 360, without moving the head. Humming the first two bars of Happy Birthday. Counting quickly from 1-5. Humming the first two bars of Happy Birthday.
WHY?

The thinking behind the 9 Gamut Process comes from both kinesiology and N.L.P. that states where you place the eyes will influence which part of the brain is in use. Therefore when somebody is looking down to the right, the person is accessing the lower left portion of the brain. The humming

sequence could well push credibility to a far frontier as far as the left brained are concerned, but there is a reason and purpose behind it all. Humming engages right brain activity and counting left brain action. Overall, this procedure is a very useful brain balancing exercise. Generally speaking most people have a brain imbalance. Those who spend their time in analytical activities will be left-brain dominant and those with a more creative bent tend to be right brain dominant. We seek balance in all things. If we go around using only half the brain to its full extent, we are limiting full potential. Its a bit like going through life with one hand tied behind the back. Kinesiologists believe brain imbalance is the prime reason for switching, which is another word for Polarity Reversal. Many people now believe the 9 Gamut Procedure is a little bit pass, admittedly it is not always necessary, but it can be very useful in those cases where the SUDs have come down to a one or two and you want to flatten them swiftly. Conversely you can also use this technique on those occasions when things seem to be sticking. I hope the SUDS have now bottomed out at a very manageable 0. If not there is another trick in the book. Its called The Floor to ceiling Eye Roll. This is a relaxation exercise, too. Start by tapping Triple Warmer 2, which is the gamut spot and it lies in the gap between the knuckles of the ring finger and the baby finger. The head needs to be held relatively level. Roll the eyes down to the floor spread the gaze to take in as much detail as possible and begin to rotate the eyes upwards slowly in a vertical line as far up as they will go whilst tapping the gamut spot. Take about 10 seconds to complete the exercise. Now are the SUDS flat? Yes, well thats marvelous! No, I think you need to take a look at the section on Psychological Reversal. Before we move on, lets sum up, shall we? The Cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the bodys energy system. Gary Craig Its a three-step process. 1) Somebody has a distressing memory. 2) Theres a zzzzzzt, which causes a fuse to blow which results in a disruption in the bodys energy system. 3) Result = Negative emotion. That means none of therapy depends on your belief structure to make it work.

The Basic Recipe The Set-up.. Repeat X 3: Even though I have this_____________________(problem) I accept and approve of myself just as I am." Whilst rubbing the sore spot or tapping the karate chop point. Another alternative procedure is to tap under the nose.

An alternative and highly effective anti-PR tapping spot is under the nose. (GV) The Sequence: Tap about 7 times on each point whilst repeating the reminder phrase (problem) The Tapping Points On the Body:

46

Hand Tapping Points: Before we leave this section, Id like to stress that most problems have several aspects to them. An aspect is best described as one of the incidents that go to make up a problem. The more global the problem the more aspects it has. If someone comes up with a set-up phrase like: My father bullied me when I was a child, more than likely the bullying comprised several incidents. There would be a first incident and there would be a worst incident. It is possible that the first and the worst are one and the same. Each succeeding incident provides a gestalt of incidents which go to make up and reinforce the issue. These incidents are the aspects. Its easier to treat something specific rather than global. This illustrated set-up appears to be somewhat global. You will need to question your client carefully to find what precisely in this bullying scenario is the key incident. Tad James in Time Line Therapy maintains the key incident is usually the first one. The subsequent occasions merely reinforce the first one.

The Movie Technique: It has been said that if you were to identify and write down all your beliefs, you would see your life being played out before you. Fred Gallo The first question to ask is: If you could make a movie of the problem how long would it last? This sniffs out globalisation. If the answer is three days the problems is far too global, has too many aspects and needs to be broken down into individual aspects or incidents so that it can be dealt with more easily,. Nextask that they run the movie and stop whenever zzzzt which is a technical word for intensity of emotion comes up. On encountering negative emotional power Tap on it until it is flat. Continue the movie and play it to the end tapping on all emotionally intense aspects until they are all flat. Im willing to bet this gets rid of all the aspects! However, just to make sure: Once you think youve finished, you need to test to ascertain that you have covered all the aspects of the problem.
1) Just think of a moving spider, how does it feel? . If there is no reaction continue. 2) Think of a spider coming towards you in your bedroom? How does it feel, look & sound? 3) Imagine finding a spider in the shower, how does it feel, look & sound? Etc. etc.

47

If you get a fear reaction on any of these questions you will need to go back to the tapping routine and tap until the aspect is flat. conclude with a past pace and a future pace. (This technique comes from NLP and is an excellent way of evaluating your work.) 1) Go back in time to the last time you saw a spider, how is that different, now? 2) Go out to an undetermined time in the future, and imagine you come face to face with a hairy spider, whats different about this, now? Emergency Procedures:

Rub on sore spot & then tap UE, CB. & UA.
Get client to drink water, followed by the simplified CollarBone Breathing (See page 62) and recommence. Water has amazing properties. It never ceases to amaze me how it can calm an agitated person. When individuals get upset they frequently forget to breathe that makes the situation worse.
Roger Callahan talks at some length about the The Apex Effect. The wordApex comes from Arthur Koestlers novel The Ghost in the Machine, which was published in 1967. The book explores belief systems showing how people have a difficulty accepting experiences that are different from their perceived notion of reality. The left brain requires an explanation, but what happens when they cant explain it, what do they do? They come up with a completely different explanation and pass it off as fact. In other words they go into denial, claiming in this instance that although the symptoms have disappeared the vanishing trick had nothing to do with one of the Meridian Energy Therapies. To get round the disavowal it is useful to write down the SUDS before and after treatment and discuss the changes with the person who has been treated. He will probably concede your intervention was responsible for the changes. However if youre tempted to cut out this negotiation you might find: a man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still.

Therapists find the Apex Problem bothersome because they feel the client has not validated the technique and if this has occurred it is unlikely they will speak highly of the therapy or refer their friends and acquaintances. True this will happen from time to time, but far better to concentrate on those that do rather than those that dont. So move on, there are plenty of people out there in the big, wide wonderful world you want your help. Some will, some wont, so what! If it bothers you, you could always record your sessions, with the clients consent of course. Then you will have incontrovertible evidence your intervention did work. Give the client the tape and encourage them to use it if any other aspects of the reporting problem should show up. Still, I think it would be much more useful to teach your person how to tap effectively on themselves, so they have a tool they can use to address any and all of those niggling problems that have a nasty tendency to come into everyones life from time to time.

Chapter Three
Four Important Considerations:`
Dehydration, Neurological Disorganisation, Psychological Reversal & Energy Toxins. You wont get the results youre looking for unless Dehydration, Neurological disorganisation and Psychological Reversal have been fixed. Likewise energy toxins can sometimes be the root of the problem. So it might be a good idea to fix them at the outset and keep checking to insure they do not reoccur. Dehydration. We have touched on this in the previous section. In his book; Your Bodys Many Cries For Water, Dr. Batmanghelidj has this to say1. Pathology that is seen to be associated with social stresses---fear, anxiety, insecurity, persistent emotional and matrimonial problems and the establishment of depression---are the results of water deficiency to the point that the water requirements of the brain tissue is affected. When the body lacks water it is stressed. Once stress is present, there is an automatic response to help correct it. Materials are mobilised from the bodys storage system. In order to facilitate the flight or fight response the body calls up several strong hormones. These are secreted until the danger has passed. This process will create further dehydration. It is a vicious circle, and I suspect in spite of Gary Craigs admonitions to tap on everything, so doing will not address a water shortage in the human system. It is a good idea to test for dehydration before you begin a treatment using the Meridian Energy Therapies. There is a simple energy test developed by kinesiology. Test a muscle and then ask your subject to grasp a lock of hair situated close to the scalp. If the muscle tests weak, there is a good chance your issue is one of dehydration. It is very easily addressed by simply drinking a glass of water. Another test for dehydration is dark coloured urine. The kidneys are responsible for urine production along with the excretion of excess hydrogen, potassium, sodium and waste products. How this is done will depend on the amount of water available for secretion. If there is a shortage, the colour will be dark because of the lack of water relative to the other waste products. Dehydration like this if prolonged can cause kidney damage. Sometimes people complain that once they start drinking large amounts of water( we are looking at intake in the region of two litres per day; they spent all day peeing). If the excessive urination continues after approximately one week, it is a sign that the liver is possibly having difficulty recognising water as a hydrating substance. It needs a marker to overcome the problem, and so it is a good idea to add a dash of lemon juice. Likewise when somebody becomes extremely upset during a tapping routine, during which a situation might develop where the SUDS begin to rise and the individual becomes so agitated that tapping becomes problematic. Stop the

process, break the state and get him/her to drink a glass of water. The eyebrow point links to the Bladder meridian this associates with the pituitary gland as does the stomach point. As your person drinks the water it is a good idea to tap gently on first the eyebrow and then the stomach to calm them sufficiently to continue the treatment. I also stress the prime importance of deep breathing, which works wonders to mend a disturbed state. A severe abreaction is unlikely to happen with the Meridian Energy Therapies, but they do happen from time to time. These outbursts can be intimidating for the therapist, too. I suggest that both parties drink water, if such a thing should occur. Dr. Batmanghelidj writes convincingly about depression. He feels quite often this is another symptom of severe dehydration. This is what to do if you suspect dehydration might be the problem. Simple, drink water, lots of water. Assuming urine production is up to it, drink 2 litres of filtered or still bottled water for a week. Then check on the symptoms. If they have ameliorated youve found the problem. If not, its something else. Look at the lips! If they appear dry and wizened, drink more water. Its a sign of dehydration, and not a signal to apply copious quantities of lipsyl. The Taoist principal regarding water is different. The Chinese believe that like all things, the intake of water needs to be moderate and two or more litres per day is far too much. Personally, you need to go the route which feels correct for you! Neurological Disorganisation: Simply stated means that the central nervous system misinterprets incoming nerve impulses. It is a state often found in those with learning disorders such as dyslexia, when letters or numbers are reversed, there is confusion between left and right and spatial relationships are easily confused. As many of these tests involve muscle testing, more of which later. It would be a good idea to ensure that our muscle tests are reasonably accurate. So the place to start is: Switching or Polarity Reversal:
This problem invalidates the results of muscle testing, or certainly makes them very unreliable. Electrical impulses along with chemical reactions are the principal working parts of the nervous system. This means electrical currents flow throughout the body. Think of it like a battery. Batteries have poles like magnets. They are either positive or negative which correspond to the north and south poles of a magnet. The human body works in the same way, and similar to your radio or tape recorder the system requires an electrical charge in order to function. If you put the batteries into your radio the wrong way round, it simply will not work, because the charge is flowing in the wrong direction. Sometimes the bodys electrical current flows in the wrong direction because of stress or it is influenced by electrical fields that surround it. The EMFs (electro-magnetic fields) come from gadgets we use. Computers, televisions, electric blankets and microwave ovens have very strong fields that can severely disrupt our own energies. Many people spend much of their day in front of a computer terminal, clutch mobile telephones to their ears, eat food cooked in microwave ovens, watch television and then go to sleep in beds with electric blankets. This means a large portion of the population is adversely affected by electricity. It is really important we protect ourselves. There are plenty of gadgets on the market that claim they give protection against the switching effects of EMFs. Some work and some do not. You will have to experiment for yourself. I find that certain types of crystals give excellent protection. Rose quartz is particularly good, but you will have to test it for yourself. Keep a chunk of it in your pocket and

50

carry it around. You will, however, need to cleanse it from time to time. Just plunge it under a running cold tap and allow it to soak there for a minute or two and then allow it to dry by lying on the kitchen window sill, preferably on a sunny day! Another simple solution is to fill a small 30ml bottle with filtered or bottled water and drip four drops of Bach Rescue Remedy into it. Place the bottle in front of the television and another on or beside your computer. These bottles last about a month, when you throw out the contents and just repeat the procedure. Microwaves and electric blankets are another problem. Personally, I believe the best place for a microwave oven is the junkyard, and would not have one in the house. Electric blankets are fine, providing you use them to warm the bed and turn them off before climbing into it. Mobile phones are a worry! Yes, they are hugely useful, but they will be responsible for a spate of tragedies and a bevy of expensive lawsuits out there in the future. If we use them it is imperative to protect ourselves from their dangers. A hands free connection helps reduce the harmful microwaves. I also recommend the user do one of the Switching correction exercises after using the phone.

The Switch Test: Place the palm of one hand over the crown of the head. This has an opposite magnetic polarity to the back of the hand. Consider it to correspond to positive north. Test a muscle. If the muscle tests strong, turn the hand over so the palm faces the ceiling. Test again; as this is the negative pole it will probably test weak. If this is the case switching is not present. If the palm side down tests weak and the palm side up indicates strong you have a sign of Psychological Reversal. If the palm side down and the palm side up both test strong you have a suggestion of switching or polarity reversal.
What to do about it!

1) The easiest correction is: Place two fingers of the non-dominant hand in the navel; With the first two fingers of the dominant hand rub the sore spots on the collarbone for approximately one minute. 2) Place two fingers on the third eye and two fingers of the opposite hand in the tummy button. Breathe in and pull up and breathe out and release. Do this Hook-Up for four in and out breaths. Then re-test. Switching should be clear now. Many children and adults for that matter had difficulty with crawling. Educational Kinesiologists tell us that crawling is a vital step in child development. The brain has two halves. The left and right lobes that are separated by the Corpus Callosum. The left hemisphere looks after the right side of the body and the right looks after the left. In order for this to work there must be a crossover. When we crawl, we move the right arm and the left leg and vice versa. This facilitates the crossover. It is no coincidence that soldiers spend a lot of their time marching. In fact they march off to war! In marching the right arm rises with the left leg. This assists the crossover. When the crossover occurs thinking improves, energy flows better and all in all the soldier is in a better position to be more adept in his duties. Donna Eden makes much of this Crossover in her book Energy Medicine2

51

When your energies are moving straight up and down each side of your body, like parallel lines, the pattern is referred to as homolateral. You are operating at less than 50% efficiency. You cannot get well if your energies are homolateral. It is that simple. It is hard to think clearly. You tend towards depression as all your physical processes slow down. Your senses are less acute----you cant see, hear, smell, touch or taste as well as at other times. You feel less alive. Your triple warmer is hypervigilant, yet your immune system cant heal you from illness.3 Again its relatively easy to test for homolateral crossover. Draw an X on a piece of paper or card and get your person to look at it whilst you muscle test in the clear. If the muscle tests strong there is an indication that homolateral crossover is present and this is not a problem. If however, the muscle tests weak go on to the next step. In the second step draw two parallel lines on a card or piece of paper. Test the muscle. If the muscle tests weak there is no problem, but on the other hand if it is strong you have a positive indication that homolateral crossover is not present. Another simple test is to get your person to walk towards you, and when they draw up to you reach out and do the muscle test. It should test strong, because it would be altogether awkward if walking forwards weakened us. To double check then get them to walk backwards and test once more. The muscle should test weak, but if it doesnt you can be pretty certain that no crossover is happening. An interesting exercise is to watch people walking down the street. Notice those who are not crossing their arms and walk holding them close to their sides. Chances are these people are not crossing over. Take some time, too, to watch someone who is depressed move around. Do they swing their arms? Does the left arm rise along with the right leg, or not. If this is not occurring, you could teach them to walk swinging their arms and lifting the opposite leg. This is a version of the Cross Crawl and you might be very agreeably surprised by the positive affect this simple exercise has on somebody who is in a de-energised state. As already mentioned children who have not crawled frequently have learning disabilities. Watch childrens movements carefully. Is your child slouching along with hands in pockets, arms hunched into sleeves and seemingly glued to the sides? This is no way to be alert and energised. Remember, we are not here to look at problems, but to find solutions. The answer is simple, too. Teach the child to swing his/her arms when walking. It will make a huge difference to many aspects in life. If you find somebody who is not crossing over, you will need to get them to Cross Crawl, that is to say they march swinging the right arm and the left leg and vice versa for approximately thirty seconds. That usually corrects the problem. Be sure to muscle test again to make sure you have corrected it. The predicament is virtually pan-endemic, because so many men and women carry bags, briefcases or backpacks over one shoulder. This inhibits the crossover technique, which requires arms to swing. Another crossover correction is to tap the Collar Bone point (K.27). However, I do find the marching version of the Cross Crawl more effective.

You will recall from the section on the acu-points that Peter Mandel, the founder of Colourpuncture maintains that often there is a disturbance on this bridge between the lobes of the brain. In his opinion the disorder comes as a result of a trauma that occurred between birth and the end of puberty. Moreover he insists its impossible to adjust or regulate any disease before first removing the blockage. Interestingly, through his investigations of this phenomenon using Kirlian photography, he found that if the blockage came on the left side it indicated an emotional trauma and on the right it showed a physical one. Once more, thanks to muscle testing you can discover on which side the obstruction resides. Get your subject to place two fingers on the Governing Vessel point, under the nose. Test the muscle. Now ask your client to remove the right finger. You then test again. If the muscle tests weak with the left finger in place you have a clue that a significant emotional trauma occurred sometime before the end of puberty. Conversely if the weakness occurs on the right side there is a warning that a physical trauma happened in this individuals time sequence. In the case of a physical trauma, it might be appropriate to address it at this juncture. Just ask if a serious accident or illness took place under the age of 16. However, this is not the place or time to start working with serious emotional traumas. However, to work at all we require an un-overwhelmed Triple Warmer to be in place, and so I move to the next test. The Triple Warmer governs the autonomic reaction characterised by what Hans Selye called the Flight or Fight Response. Flight relates to fear and fight to anger. Both emotions take a severe toll on the body. For instance, if your name was Fred Flintstone and you saw a sabre toothed tiger ambling towards you, what would you do? You could fight it, hopefully overcome it and then carry it home for lunch. But like any gamble you could lose and it could have you for dinner. So, perhaps a safer but perhaps less practical bet would be to run like hell! However, when we make either choice the body undergoes a chemical change that inhibits functions that are unnecessary in the flight or fight situation. Blood flows from surface capillaries to deep muscle in order to make you stronger. The pupils of the eye dilate in order for you to see better. And digestion shuts down, as it is unlikely you will need to have a quick snack until this is all over, and so on. What switches the flight or fight response on is the hormone called adrenaline. Today there are no sabre-toothed tigers running around the urban jungle. Instead we are triggered by inappropriate stimuli but they still cause the same reactions to take place. The bank manager is not a physical threat to either you or me, but we frequently perceive him as such. Consequently, we have an adrenaline rush our muscles stiffen and body temperature reduces as blood flows from surface capillary to the deeper muscles in preparation for either running or battling. To my mind this is a serious design defect, which was once useful but has with the passage of time become useless. This means its atavistic. There is another problem, too! Our cave dwelling ancestors, who chose to fight or run away from mammoths, would get back to the cave and relax. The autonomic nervous system would then switch from the sympathetic dominant and hyper vigilant mode of flight and fight to something much more serene. Yes, it would switch into peaceful

53

parasympathetic. This gave the system time to relax and repose and balance was restored. Sadly in our fear dominated age this is not so. The Triple Warmer goes into overwhelm and stays there! During periods of intense fear some individuals experience panic attacks which are characterised by shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat, sweating, numbness and trembling. It is as if the person is in an actual fight/flight situation and is confronting our mythical sabre tooth tiger. And just like the real case scenario, the fear of death often accompanies the physical disturbance. Donna Eden refers to the Triple Warmer as a strange flow. She believes it is immensely important. She tells us in: Energy Medicine that The triple warmer meridian networks information to all the meridians and the organs they serve. It is governed by the hypothalamus gland, the bodys thermostat and the instigator of the flight or fight response At the cellular level the triple warmer controls that part of the immune system that keeps invaders at bay. In other words it controls lymphocytes, antigens and antibodies as well as T Cells. The ratio of T Cells gives a valuable indication of the health of the immune system. AIDS is a disease of the immune system. AIDS can only exist if the T Cell count is low. This immune system that is designed to fight off what it perceives as foes such as harmful bacteria and viruses tends to get confused, too. As the Triple Warmer is so often in overwhelm it sometimes mistakes friendly substances as enemies and prepares to fight them off. Although adrenaline starts the process, many other hormones are also secreted when the body prepares itself for battle or escape. Endorphins enable the body to better withstand pain and discomfort. This is useful, as we can often get hurt whilst fighting. Cortisone breaks fatty acids down and converts them into energy. The body doesnt need food in these times of crisis, because this process enables it to feed off itself. However, it was designed to be a short-term emergency function. In the long term the practice causes a depletion of vital amino acids so necessary for the rebuilding of the system. Insulins job is to go out and collect sugars that it transports to the liver, where the sugars are stored as another energy reserve called glycogen. Too much insulin causes a state called hypoglycemia, which is a condition loosely opposite to diabetes. When the system is so overwhelmed it is not surprising how easy it is for bewilderment to exist. As I say the immune system can often mistake friend for foe. This is what happens in allergies. Antibodies and lymphocytes are scrambled to fight a material which to most people would be harmless, such as wheat. Histamine production goes sky-high in an effort to bring everything under control and so stress piles on stress. This sensitivity is really an autoimmune breakdown. Related to all of this is the preponderance of auto immune diseases such as IBS, rheumatoid arthritis and the many varieties of chronic fatigue syndrome. All of this because an overactive Triple Warmer keeps the autonomic nervous system in a continuous state of readiness for flight or fight. To test whether the Triple Warmer is in overdrive cup the palm, spread the fingers and place the palm over one ear, it doesnt matter which one. Next do a muscle test! If the muscle tests weak there is a good indication that he triple warmer is indeed overwhelmed.

54

What to do about it! Bring the index and middle fingers of both hands to rest on the temples. Hold the position whilst taking four deep breaths. Breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth. To complete the exercise rake the fingers of both hands through the scalp and to the back of the head. Then bring them down the back of the head until they reach the shoulders. Allow the hands to rest on the shoulders for a couple of breaths and then allow them to flop down. Balanced Breathing Exercise.
The procedure is as follows: Based on a two-thousand year old meditation, this method eases anxiety while rebalancing the body's polarity. Balanced Breathing takes about two minutes, can be performed sitting in a chair, lying down or standing. Once you are in position, relax and breathe deeply. Then: 1) Cross your left ankle over your right ankle. Extend both arms out in front of you 2) Cross your right arm over your left arm at the wrist. 3) Rotate the palms of your hands so that they are facing and interlock your fingers. 4) Swivel your hand down towards your stomach. 5) Continue rotating inward so that you bring your hands close to your chest. You have crossed the centre line of your body with your hands, arms, and legs. Note: If it is more comfortable, you can reverse the order of " right ankle over left, left wrist over right. As long as they are opposite, it doesn't make a difference. Inhale through your nose while touching the tip of your tongue to the roof of your mouth. Exhale through your mouth, resting your tongue on the floor of your mouth, breathing comfortably through the entire exercise. Focus your thoughts on the concept of balance: just say the word "balance," or visualise something representative of balance such as a scale or seesaw. If you lose the thought or drift away, come back to it. WHEN YOU feel balanced Continue with the Set-up and the rest of the EFT process. ALTERNATIVELY, the Wayne Cook Posture (which helps when you are feeling overwhelmed and stressed to bring you more into focus, able to concentrate and think more clearly) is as follows: Sit in a comfortable position with your spine straight. 1) Place your right foot over your left knee. Wrap your left hand around your right ankle and your right hand around the ball of your right foot . 2) Inhale slowly through your nose, letting your breath lift your body. At The same time, pull your leg toward you, creating a stretch. Slowly exhale, Breathing out through your mouth, letting your body relax. Repeat this slow breathing and stretching four or five times. 3) Switch to the other foot. Place your left foot over your right knee. Wrap Your right hand around your left ankle and your left hand around the ball of your left foot. Repeat the same breathing exercise. 4) Uncross your legs and place your fingertips together forming a pyramid. Bring your thumbs to rest on your third eye-- just above the bridge of your nose. Breathe slowly in

55

through your nose. Exhale slowly through your moth, allowing your thumbs to separate slowly across your forehead, pulling the skin. 5) Bring your thumbs back to the third eye position. Slowly bring your hands down in front of you, pulling them together into the prayer position while breathing deeply. Surrender into your own breathing. Donna Eden explains this position further by telling you to cross your hands and notice which thumb ends up on top. If the left thumb is on top, then do the procedure with your left leg and foot over your right knee. If the right thumb is on top, then begin with your right leg and ankle over your left knee. If you do the procedure with one leg and still don't feel "balanced, continue with the other leg. STILL ANOTHER PROCEDURE, is the Hook Up". It is simple and strengthens the auric field while connecting and balancing your energies: We looked at it at the beginning of this section whilst discussing Switching. Breathing switches on the parasympathetic portion of the autonomic nervous system. This is the rest mode and not the flight or fight. So it stands to reason breathing calms people down. Ocular Lock: Sometimes when the eyes move up and down from side to side or are rotated there will be a position which causes a jerkiness or the eyes will stick finding it hard to move on. This coordination difficulty can create neurological disorganisation. The Test: Have your testee rotate the eyes in a full circle clockwise. Test the muscle. If strong continue and ask them to make a full circle in an anti-clockwise direction. Test again; if still strong the problem does not exist. If weak, it does. NLP (Neuro-Linguistc Programming) tells us about eye accessing cues. Somebody moves his eyes and this movement indicates which part of the brain is being used at that particular moment. We use these eyes movements to elicit a strategy, but we can use them in ocular lock, too. A quick observation, the directions shown here apply to the subject and not the observer. This means he will move to his left and not to the observers left.

Eyes up to the left indicate Visual remembered. Evidence of a remembered trauma.

Eyes up to the right indicate visual construct. Seeing things in a different light.

Eyes on the midline indicate the auditory segments to the brain are being accessed.

To the left = Remembered. Something that was said is being recalled.

56

To the right = constructed.

Down to the right = self-talk

Down to the left = accessing feelings. Muscle test with your client looking up to the left then up to the right then on the midline to the left and then right and then looking down to the left and right. Wherever the muscles weakens is the problem. If for instance your test reveals a weak muscle when the individual looks up to the right, you have an indication of stuckness or rigidity. Your subject has a difficulty with change and seeing lifes aspects in a new light. You need to note this and explore it further. To correct the problem you will have to do a round or two of EFT. If however, you want to come back and deal with this problem later thats fine. Collar Bone Breathing will often correct it in the short term. Its outlined below so give it a go!! On the other hand if the stuckness reveals itself whilst the individual is looking up to the left, you have probably found a trauma that needs to be cleared in order for the neurology to be cleared.
The Collarbone Breathing Exercise by Roger. J. Callahan 1993. First the subject takes two fingers of the dominant hand and touches the sore spot point on the right with the finger tips, tapping the nine gamut spot with two fingers of the other hand whilst going through the following breathing positions. 1) 1.Breathe normally 2) 2.Take a full deep breath & hold it. 3) 3.Let half the breath out and hold. 4) 4. Let all the breath out and hold. 5) 5. Take a half breath in and hold. The tapping should be swift, and there should be approximately 5 taps per breath. When completed the same fingers are moved to the sore spot point on the left and the sequence is repeated. Next the fingers are then bent so that the knuckles touch the point and the breathing sequence is repeated on this the right hand point. Then the fingers in knuckle position are moved to the left spot. The whole routine is then repeated in its entirety with the 4 left hand. David Feinstein also suggests palming, which involves rubbing the palms of both hands together vigorously and then placing them over the closed eyes for a few moments. Its a lot quicker than collarbone breathing. So compare the two methods and decide which is the most effective for you.

Psychological Reversal: We cannot change anything unless we accept it. Condemnation does not liberate, it oppresses. Carl. G. Jung
What is reversal?

Reversal is a disruption of the bodys energy system to such an extent that the polarity of energy flow is reversed. The result is the healing process cannot take place. It was discovered by the chiropractor and kinesieologist George Goodhart. Sometimes the client is accused of not being motivated enough to make a recovery. This could be nonsense. We have all had days when we stumble over words and fall over our own feet. We feel our energy is out of sorts! We have seen this in action with Neurological Disorganisation." In essence Psychological Reversal denotes a conflict. The client says one thing and does another. The Dynamic is familiar to most people through plans of personal change that they affirm and reaffirm but never quite adhere to.. The conscious mind has one agenda, but the opposing agenda outside of consciousness wins.5 Can you see what this does for treatment? With every good will in the world the client wants to comply but cant! This is sometimes referred to as selfsabotage as it creates addictions and destructive behaviours that take a huge toll on the quality of life for the subject and those around them. For instance the smoker knows smoking is harmful but continues to smoke. It is an example of cognitive dissonance, and illustrates how this disrupts the flow of energy within the meridian system. The mind and body are indeed fully connected which is a relief to know. An energy reversal blocks you from seeing solutions even when you have the knowledge, or it prevents you from implementing the solution even though you have the ability. Fred Gallo

What Causes PR?

Kinesiolgy indicates that negative emotions create PR. Certainly depression, addictions and chronic illness are indicators of Reversal. Which came first the PR or the negative state is a chicken and egg question. Certainly energy toxins, which produce allergic responses are triggers, so are electro-magnetic fields. In switching or polarity reversal the energies seem to lock. In Psychological Reversal they reverse. The key to PR is conflict. Conflict is the opposite of harmony which is the definition of balance and wellness in Chinese Medicine. Lets just say Psychological reversal is not wellness. It indicates a state of imbalance in the system.
The Six Types of Reversal:

1) Massive Reversal (Global) This affects all parts of life. Someone who is massively reversed passes up potentially good opportunities, because he or she does not recognize them and frequently focus on the negative aspect/s of the situation rather than the positive (mismatching metaprogram in NLP). A massively reversed person is a self-saboteur and is thus unable to identify people and situations that are beneficial and in worst cases actively seeks out negative people and situations. The results are: bad relationships (masochism/sadism), chronic depression, and all types of addictions. Such behaviours often result in chronic illness. By all means use specifically directed questions to identify Massive reversal, but kinesiology is extremely useful for identifying individuals with this problem. Statements like: Even though I know smoking is bad for me and I choose to stop smoking because I deeply and profoundly accept myself, will test weak for two reasons. A) The smokers are on a self-destruct path and do not wish to stop. B) They do not deeply and profoundly accept themselves. Solution: Rub sore spot and repeat three times: (This is the conventional treatment point) I deeply and profoundly accept myself with all my problems and limitations. Check for feedback. Then go to set-up phrase, Even though etc. Rub sore spot However, I favour tapping under the nose (GV 27) for treatment of global Reversal. The core issue will be to help them come to love and approve of themselves. To begin with; loving and approving might just be too long a stretch. You need to use your own discretion in these matters. If somebody looks uncomfortable with the set-up phrase, its wrong and you need to change it. Altering it to, I accept and approve of myself might be a lot easier. Of course massively Reversed men and women will usually judge themselves and others. Judgment implies they are wrong in some way, so lets try this one for size: I accept and approve of myself just as I am!

59

Massively Reversed persons will require several treatments. Do not look for 1-minute wonders here. V.Important. Reducing or removing PR gives a brief window of opportunity. It will return so treatment must ensue immediately. 2) Deep Level Reversal: In this case the person wants to change but believes the problem is too powerful or too much part of the pattern of life to alter. Statements like: I will get over this problem. will give a no in the Applied Kinesiology test. Or else I will continue to have this problem, will test yes. Solution: Tap under nose whilst thinking about the problem and repeat three times. I deeply love and accept myself even though I never get over this problem. Then go to set-up phrase, Even though etc. whilst rubbing the sore spot. You will have to work to change the belief that this person cannot change. This requires effort to correct negative beliefs on self-esteem and confidence. 3) Specific Reversal: (The most common) Usually limited to particular situations such as the fear of heights or public speaking. Usually this is the only problem that needs eliminating. The central question is whether or not the individual is ready to let go of the problem now, and whether it is appropriate to eliminate the entire problem. Statement: I am ready to eliminate my fear of public speaking, now: Will test weak as will: I am ready to eliminate all of the problem, now. Solution: Tap on the Karate Chop spot (Small Intestine 3) whilst saying X3. I deeply accept myself even though I have this problem. Then proceed to set up phrase; Even though etc whilst tapping the KC spot. You will have to determine what aspect persons are prepared to let go of in the present time. List them and then work on them one by one. 4) Criteria Related Reversal: Deals with specific issues or beliefs, usually guilt based. Guilt is a very negative emotion. It is invariably shame related and worse still in our culture, guilt demands punishment. Criteria Related Reversal usually hinges around whether someone believes they deserve to get over a problem, and that determines whether or not they allow themselves to clear it. Statement: I deserve to get over this problem. will test weak as will, its safe to get over the problem. Conversely, Ill feel deprived when I get over the problem. This will test strong or yes. Solution: Tap on LL (lower lip) and repeat X3, I deeply and completely approve and accept myself even though I deserve to have this problem. Or I deeply and completely approve and accept myself even though its not

60

safe for me to get over this problem. Or I deeply and completely approve and accept myself even if I feel deprived if I get over this problem. Then go to set-up phrase Even though etc.. whilst tapping on three times on the Karate Chop Point. You will have to make a list of the aspects and work on them one by one until the SUDs are flat. 5) Mini-Reversal: Occurs after there has been successful treatment. Your client makes good progress and then suddenly stops. The most likely explanation is he/she is not yet ready to release the entire problem. This can be specific or criteria related. Determine which one and then treat accordingly. 6) Recurring Reversal: This is evident when you are making good progress and the SUDS are reducing, when suddenly the person becomes agitated and reverts to original or higher SUDS level. This generally indicates another aspect has surfaced. Requires you to start gain at the beginning and re-check the set-up phrase it might need to change. Energy Toxins:
A person can be sensitive to literally anything. It doesnt have to be something that is bad for you. It can be a piece of jewellery, vitamins, any food, clothing, soap, water, the sun, another person, etc.

The effects can be overt, (like getting hives when eating strawberries) or covert . Sometimes you will make a connection, sometimes not. For instance, someone may feel tired after eating wheat. I myself found my fear of heights returned after eating sugar. One very common source of energy sensitivity is the cellular phone. Almost everyone I have tested has been sensitive to them. Alan Handelsman6 Callahan writing in; Cure and Time, said: The most common reason for the return of a successfully treated problem is energy toxins. Energy toxins differ from allergies in that they have a direct effect on the bodys energy system, causing disruptions that can undo a cure. So if this is a problem that undoes the treatment where better place to deal with it, than at the outset. Energy toxins are not the same as allergies, or what I prefer to call sensitivities. Energy toxins will cause Psychological Reversal, and this Reversal will be massive when we look at addictions. The reason being that the immune system, like the rest of human biology believes in: moderation in all things. If we have too much of a substance it creates a problem. The immune system gets confused and views it as a foe. When it perceives an enemy the lymphocytes and antigens controlled by the Triple Warmer are activated. The
6 There are several devices on the market that protect us from these sensitivities, particularly the electrical ones. Alan Handelsman produces what he calls Resonance Tuners. He can be contacted on 001-480-945-6227 or e-mail: AlanHand@aol.com Those of who have been initiated in Reiki or Hawaiian Huna can use symbols to neutralize e-toxins. 61

triple warmer begins to work overtime once more. The overall consequence will be that treatment results are inconclusive. It seems as if the client takes one step forward and two steps backwards. How do we know what these toxic things are? The simplest way is to ask a question. Solution: Are there any substances that you consume every day which if I asked you to stop using would cause you to feel uncomfortable? The substances named as the answer to the question are probably energy toxins. The body knows what is good for it. At an unconscious level these substances have been noted. As a result we avoid them either consciously or unconsciously. They are not the problem! On the other hand a smoker ingests nicotine and the other six hundred poisons contained in a cigarette several times a day. Nicotine along with some of these poisons is likely to be the energy toxin. So find out. Ask the individual to list the items that he/she feels they cannot do without. Then ask them to think about them while you do an energy test. If the muscle goes weak, the chances are you have found an offending substance which can be branded as an energy toxin. In order for the body to come back into balance that substance is best avoided for a period of time. Now there is your problem. The body needs to de-toxify and come back into balance. Another method for those who can do it, would be to take the pulse. The pulse rate will increase for at least twenty minutes after the toxin has been ingested. So what is the solution? 1) Treat for Massive Reversal: Create a setup phrase and tap. Clients will only return to the substance when they are experiencing P.R. Yes, Mr. Human Being knows sugar is bad for him. He will avoid it unless he becomes reversed. The scenario will go something like this: the hypoglycemic avoids sugar because he knows it is bad for him. However, he has bread with his lunch. Bread is an energy toxin which creates a reversal and your man goes off and buys a chocolate bar. Solution: Have him rub the sore spot or tap under the nose every hour. Persuade your someone to buy one of those digital watches that beep, to the consternation of many. They set the watch and tap each time it sounds. This reverses PR as it is triggered, when he is not Psychologically Reversed it is easy for him to avoid the energy toxin so he stands a sporting chance of breaking the addiction. Its not difficult is it? This technique is really important with smokers. Heres another consideration. Those who are addicted will, because of the energy toxins trigger a host of other problems. Stated simply this means that after treating a smoker for anxiety, it is likely when the client has another cigarette he will re-trigger the anxiety. Yes, we are looking at a

62

vicious circle here. It appears that the smoking and the anxiety are related and have to be treated together. Yes, you need to address the energy toxin if you want the treatment to hold. Before you use any of the Meridian Energy Therapies there needs to be a fighting chance they will work:

63

Solution: Check it out: Test For:

Dehydration. Test: Grasp lock of hair located close to scalp. Test muscle. If weak drink water. Note the difference. Solution: Have the client drink 2 litres of water per day for 1 week (urine production should increase. If it doesnt stop!) Urination rate will stabilise when body becomes familiar with increased fluid intake.

Corpus Callosum Block Test: Test: Place right index & middle finger on UN. Remove right finger & test muscle. If weak indication of an emotional trauma before the end of puberty. Remove left finger & test if weak indication of a physical trauma before the end of puberty. Solution: Use AMBT or EFT to remove the trauma.

Polarity Reversal Test: Hold palm over top of head and muscle test. If the muscle weakens the problem is PR (Psychological Reversal). If strong turn hand so palm is facing upwards towards the ceiling. If strong Polarity Reversal. Solution: First place 2 fingers of dominant hand in navel whilst rubbing sore spots.

Triple Warmer in Overwhelm (Fight or Flight) Test: Place palm over ear, spread fingers and test muscle. If weak, indication of overwhelm. Solutions: Wayne Cook Posture Triple Warmer Hug Back Flush Triple Warmer Meridian (see chapter on meridians)

Homolateralism: Test: Look at a figure X. If muscle tests weak the subject is homolateral .Look at II (parallel lines). If strong, homolateral. Solution: Cross Crawl. Swing left arm and right leg whilst slowly marching on the spot. Tap CB (Kidney 27).

Occular Lock: Test: Rotate eyes 360 clockwise whilst testing muscle. If muscle weakens note eye position. Rotate 360 anti-clockwise. Note eye position. Solutions: Use AMBT or EFT to resolve trauma. Palm eyes. Collarbone breathing.

Energy Toxins: Test: Are there any substances which if I asked you to do without would cause you to feel uncomfortable? Get subject to visualise the substances and then muscle test. Solution: Avoid substances or neutralise them with AMBT, EFT or TAT. Then re-test.

64

Psychological Reversal: Test Immediately before treatment

Global/Massive: Test: Even though I know X is bad for me and choose to stop it because I deeply and completely accept and approve of myself. Tests weak. Either a) Subject does not accept & approve of self. b) Does not wish to overcome the problem Solution: Rub sore spot or tap under nose and repeat three times I deeply and completely accept myself just as I am..

Deep Level Reversal: Test: I intend to get over this problem. Tests weak

Solution: Tap under nose and repeat three times. I deeply and completely accept and approve of myself just as I am.

Specific Reversal: (The Most Common) I am willing to eliminate all of my problem now. Tests weak

Solution: Tap on Karate Chop spot and repeat three times. I deeply and completely accept myself even though I have this problem.

Criteria Related Reversal: Its safe to get over this problem. Or I deserve to get over this problem. Tests weak

Solution: Tap upper and lower lip alternatively and repeat three times. I deeply and completely accept myself even though I have this problem.

65

A note on Reversals: Roger Callahan tends to ignore them unless they interfere with the progress of treatment. Gary Craig pre-supposes they are always present. It is sensible to err on the side of caution and assume that Reversal is always around. A Case History generally gives evidence of the problem. However, it doesnt take much time to check them out, does it? A Case History or Two: I would like to share with you the story of a Massively Reversed client. The phenomenon is similar to reversing magnetic polarity. If you were to shift north to south and south to north everything would stand on its head. Reality has become inverted. In such situations it is easier to walk backwards than to walk forwards. The result is beautifully described by Fred Gallo and Harry Vincenzi in Energy Tapping a psychological reversal is a disruption in your bodys energy system that serves to sabotage your efforts at getting what you really want. In other words Reversal prevents you from healing in all senses of the word. Evidence indicates PR is present in all addictions, Chronic Illnesses, and Depression. If PR is present Energy Psychotherapies will not work, and by the same token neither will an aspirin if that is your chosen remedy to take away a headache. My Client, whom we shall call Susan, was abused on an ongoing basis in her teen years. She readily admits she enjoyed the sexual stimulation and would have initiated events if she had the opportunity. Not surprisingly, due to her precocious sexual experiences with an adult she was later raped. She has had several failed intimate relationships and became a drug user. Today she uses alcohol and is in an SM type relationship in which she admits there is no love but an enormous amount of excitement. She met a married man several years ago and felt loved unconditionally for the first time in her life. They lived together as a couple for a few months and then he returned to his wife. Susan lives in another country and returns to Ireland each year "to catch up with her friends". The man who returned to his wife lives here. Rationally, she tells me she has let go of her ex-lover and that it is all well and truly over! In our session we worked on limiting beliefs around choosing the wrong partner, as she wants a loving relationship and admits at one level the present sado-masochistic liaison does not really fulfil her. However, as we talked, something felt amiss, particularly as she kept on saying, "I enjoy it, but know that doesn't make sense as I was abused and raped." That prompted me to start muscle testing. Not surprisingly I found she was reversed. To correct reversal it is important to determine the nature of the reversal. In this case it was global, because getting Susan to say: Even though I know having sex with this man is bad for me I profoundly approve and accept myself just as I am. made her muscle go weak.
People very rarely "accept and approve of themselves" whilst reversed. However, I find that tapping under the nose whilst repeating the affirmation: I profoundly and completely accept and approve of myself just as I am, usually opens a window of opportunity. However, it is important to muscle test to ensure the reversal has disappeared, at least for the moment. You can use whatever intervention you want to use...

66

Gallo and Vincenzi in "Energy Tapping". Have a useful series of questions to determine Massive Reversal. They are: "a) Think about your life in general over the last year. Do you feel you have been: _______miserable _______happy _______not sure b) Are two or more major parts of your life negative, such as your work and relationships? c) Have you been chronically depressed. d) Do you have a long term addiction or addictive personality? e) Are feelings of shame, guilt, apathy, or long term grief major problems for you?" However, I did find some very curious things whilst testing Susan. When she was Reversed she tested strong, indicating an affirmative answer, when she said. "I still love (ex-lover)" and indicated that she had returned to Ireland in the hopes they might get back together in spite of the fact the relationship ended some ten years previously. The answer was a resounding yes. However, when she was Unreversed we got an opposite answer which was a clear no. I found that just talking about the situation meant she could switch from Unreversed to Reversed at a moments notice. This is very interesting, because Time Line Therapy taught us never to associate the client into severe trauma as it is likely to install the behaviour we are attempting to change at a deeper level. However in this less than traumatic situation we have an indication that we can install non-trauma, very easily, too. I found a similar response when we talked about her current sado-masochistic relationship. Just by talking about some of the things she did with her partner triggered her into the Reversed state. Whilst reversed she found the sexual games to be exciting and very stimulating but whilst unreversed, she saw the situation to be something that stood in the way of her achieving the love relationship she claimed she was looking for. She was able to acknowledge the connection between the present situation and the abusive experiences of her past. Harville Hendrix in his book. "Getting the Love You Want. A Guide For Couples" (Harper Perennial 1990. New York), says this. "The part of your brain that directed your search for a mate, however, was not your logical, orderly new brain; it was your time-locked, myopic old brain. And what your old brain was trying to do was recreate the conditions of your upbringing, in order to correct them. Having received enough nurturing to survive but not enough to feel satisfied, it was attempting to return to the scene of your original frustration so that you could resolve your unfinished business." However, Psychological Reversal is a perplexing condition, which comes about with amazing rapidity. When it takes hold the person enters self-destruct mode. Susan can see that hanging onto that old relationship blocks her finding the true love she says she seeks; whilst she can also see that her present relationship blocks her and is abusive and shame based in itself, but to be totally congruent on this she needs to be unreversed. She is being incongruent and in conflict when the reverse is true. It's interesting to note that Reversal is present in addictions, depression and chronic illness. This poses the question about Aids. Nobody dies of Aids, but of an opportunistic infection caused by the break down of the immune system. If that isn't self-destruct, I don't know what is! And then what sort of people get Aids? It seems the majority of Aids cases in the west are confined to intravenous drug users, prostitutes and homosexuals. I think it is true to say that prostitutes and drug users are following a path of self-destruction. The lifestyle of promiscuous homosexuals seems to follow a similar path. Surely, finding a cure for Aids is not the solution. The solution strikes me as being able to work with people in order to reverse Massive Psychological Reversal which entails working on abuse and other early issues. Now, thank God we have an effective way of doing this in the form of Meridian Psychotherapies and Energy Healing. Mandy started sessions with me several weeks ago. Her reporting symptom was a fear of dogs. Now, it comes as no surprise that phobias are never quite what they seem to be. To understand phobias we all need to learn to speak "unconscious". One of the easiest ways of learning to speak unconscious is to analyse dreams. Dreams are all in unconscious and once

67

we begin to get a handle on them we begin to understand how the subconscious tries to communicate in a way that frequently baffles the conscious, rational mind. It is important also never to forget that the "highest prime directive of the unconscious mind is to protect." The fact the client is sitting in front of you attests to that !!! Because if it had failed in this it is unlikely the person would be alive at all. To cut to the heel of the hunt, it appeared Mandy had been sexually abused by her father on an ongoing basis. Her brother had bullied her, which is another form of abuse, and her sister who had joined a convent as a novice nun had renounced whatever vows she had made and had run off with Mandy's fiance. Thus she had huge issues with her family, having been, as she felt, scapegoated into the role of victim. We had tapped away resentment of her father successfully. She did, however, find it difficult to forgive her sister, and we had to do a lot of work tapping the forgiveness finger (Index finger which relates to the Large Intestine Meridian). It is useful to point out that forgiveness has nothing to do with condoning the behaviour of AN Other, but to letting it go. By doing this we cut our ties with painful past events. As we tapped Mandy came to understand her fear about dogs was based on their unpredictability. She didn't like surprises, she had too many of them in her relationship with her own family. So we tapped. I now begin with a pre-set up phrase, to be quite certain that P.R .is not present. This entails tapping under the nose (Governing Vessel) and saying three times. "In spite of all my problems and limitations I'm OK." We then went to the set-up phrase which was..."Even though I'm scared of dogs because they are unpredictable, I'm OK because now I'm an adult I have more and better choices because I love and approve of myself." To begin with the SUDs were a huge 10, which reduced to a 7 after we had tapped from Eyebrow to Underarm and then to top of head. We continued to tap using the finger points and then the 9 Gamut procedure, which I prefer to call Brain Balancing. Why Brain Balancing.?...Well, it's pure NLP isn't it, and relates directly to internal representational systems and eye accessing cues. At the end of all of this we had come down to an imperceptible 0. On her return visit Mandy told me she had met a dog during the week although she had not felt entirely comfortable, she had been able to deal with the situation and was skilled enough to tap on herself which helped enormously. I realised some more work needed to be done, however I also noticed how she kept using the word "awful". I pointed it out, but back came the word. Never, whatever you do, underestimate the power of words! Words work at a deeply unconscious level and can either be neutral, positive or negative. Technically, "awful", meaning very bad, shocking or appalling deriving from the word "awe" which means deep wonder or respect. Although it shouldn't be (there are no shoulds), awful is a negative word, and if somebody uses it frequently and quite unconsciously it provides us with a red light or danger signal. So, I decided to muscle test. Sure enough "awful" weakened Mandy and appeared to cause PR. So we had a bit more work to do! Some of you have heard me speak of Florence Scovel Shinn. Flossie is wonderful. For those who don't know she was metaphysician, writing in the 1920s. On the break up of her marriage, according to Ira Glacken...."She got religion, but in a way all of her own. I believe Flossie's religion was what is known as New Thought or Unity. It was a religion of success. Flossie worked out her own philosophy and then wrote a book with a sure-fire title: The Game of Life and How to Play It. No publisher would touch it. So Flossie sold her Biddle silver....and published it herself in 1925." She published a sequel in 1928. This was.."Your Word is Your Wand." This morning I opened "The Writings of Florence Scovel Shinn" and on page 162 of the edition I have, I read: "The thing you dislike or hate will surely come upon you, for when man hates, he makes a vivid picture in the subconscious mind and it objectifies. The only way to erase these pictures is through non-resistance. For example: A woman was interested in a man who told her repeatedly of his charming women cousins. She was jealous and resentful and he passed out of her life. Later on she met another man to whom she was much attracted. In the course of their conversation, he mentioned some women cousins he was very fond of. She resented it, and then laughed, for here were old friends "the cousins" back again.

68

This time she tried non-resistance. She blessed all the cousins in the Universe and sent them good will, for she knew if she didn't, every man she met would be stocked up with women relations. It was successful because she never heard cousins mentioned again." Florence Scovel Shinn. The Game of Life and How to Play It. How about: "Even though I'm jealous of all these female relatives, I'm O.K. because I love and approve of myself." Does that work as a set-up phrase for this woman's problem? Although Mandy had a problem with the word awful that was weakening her energy system, she had heard of Flossie. In fact she had come upon her many years ago, and now as she had learned how to tap, thanks to EFT, she was tapping Flossie's positive suggestions directly into her energy system and thence directly into her unconscious mind. Mandy is now in her fifties, and she wants to have a warm, caring intimate relationship with a man. She has been too scared to do this because of her background. Now she has set herself a goal. Yes, she wants to meet him within a few months. I also heard from Susan during the week, she has told the ex-lover not to call around any more. It seems he still wanted to do this, and of course his visits triggered all her old stuff. She is learning how to set boundaries. As for her present boyfriend; they contrived to have a row during the week and she hasn't seen him since. However, she assures me she has not finished the relationship. She keeping the doors open but she has made some insights into what is good and what is bad for her. These are huge strides, which came after a few hours of EFT. I know of no other therapy that would have achieved those results so quickly and yet so effectively. Well, I think my own AMBT would have done just as well, but more about that later! I still continue to be astounded, and take the well nigh miraculous to be an every day event. However, I have discovered another phenomenon, and that is people who find all of this to lie outside their belief system and so refuse to tap even though they suspect it might work. I know Richard Bandler says: there are no resistant clients just resistant therapists, what do you think?

Kinesiology/ Muscle Testing: Or Each of Us is a Walking lie Detector. Muscle Testing owes its origins to Kinesiology and the work of Dr. George Goodheart D.C. and other chiropractors working the USA in the 1960s.We are fortunate enough to have one of these chiropractors, James Durlacher on our Life_Coaching_Ireland computer info/chat list.
We place the body in a certain position, which brings the ends of the

muscles we want to test close together, and puts other muscles which ordinarily work with it at a disadvantage. We then press in a direction which requires the muscle were testing to work to hold the body in position. In other words, we isolate the muscle by positioning the body, then test it by pressing against its pull. John Thie DC Touch For Health. A muscle test is a bio-feedback device, which gives information from the biocomputer, which is another way of describing the body itself. When a muscle is subjected to a substance that weakens the organism it will go weak and when it is presented with something that strengthens the organism it will go or remain strong. It would seem something that is not true for us would weaken a muscle, whilst something that is will strengthen it.

69

The Purpose of Muscle Tests: We use muscle tests to clarify what may not be certain in our own and clients conscious minds. The muscle is a connection directly with the unconscious and it cannot lie, providing switching is not present. These methods are particularly valuable in identifying whether or not PR is present, and if it is, in what form. Self- testing methods are an invaluable means of developing intuition. How To Muscle Test: The Arm Test: (Pectoralis Major Clavicular)
Do not press too hard. This is not a test of strength. This tires muscles and often renders them invalid.

1) Have Subject stand erect, head

facing the front, with arm extended straight ahead and thumb pointing

downwards towards the floor. Tester place on hand gently on the testees shoulder and the other open over wrist. ASK the subject to hold and pause for the count of three. Then gently exert downward pressure on the arm 2) Take two fingers of dominant hand and sweep downwards from the lower lip to the solar plexus. Ask testee to hold and apply gentle downwards pressure. The arm should go weak. If not the subject is switched. This means Polarity Reversal is present. Need to remove PR in order to get a reliable test. (Use Wayne Cook Posture or Cross Crawling) 3) Sweep hand upwards from solar plexus to the lower lip to restore normal energy flow. Test muscle again. It should now test strong. 4) Ask subject to complete the sentence: My name is(say real name) Muscle will test strong. 5) Repeat: My name is (False name). Muscle goes weak. 6) Now try these: 2+2+4. 2+2=5. Smile at the subject as you go to test the arm. Frown at the subject as you go to test the arm. Note the differences in muscle strength. This shows you how important it is to stay neutral. By the same token do not presuppose answers as you test.

70

7) Having cleared the way you can now move onto significant questions that need to be tested. A word of warning, dont be too complacent when you have used these techniques on several occasions. Make sure the testee is really holding the muscle strong when you say hold. Other Methods: Finger Test (Opponens Pollicis Longus) Useful when the arm muscle gets tired.
Self Tests:

1) The O Ring Test: The Thumb and middle fingers of each hand are made into two interlocking rings, and the test consists of pulling one ring through the other. 2) Finger Pressure. The Index finger represents the arm. It is pressed down by the middle finger. 3) Finger movement (an ideo-motor response). Lets say the index finger is assigned with the yes response and the middle finger no. The question is asked and the finger responds. The movement is usually very slight if not almost imperceptible. These ideo-motor responses need extreme concentration when working with another. 4) Sticky/smooth. Rough/Smooth. In this case rub the pad of the middle finger over the nail of the index finger. Say My name is (real name). Then notice the sensation. Is it sticky or smooth? Next, repeat the process but give a false name. Notice the difference. It is really quite subtle. Most commonly people get a smooth for yes and a sticky for no, but this can vary to a ridged for no. Variations include rubbing the thumbnail with the index finger and so on. It is important to rub only when asking the question.

In Chapter Two we looked at meridian based tapping points and examined the qualities of the individual meridians. We looked at these energy channels from the point of view of the tapping routine of TFT and EFT but this does in fact give a distorted picture of the organization of the meridians themselves. Chinese Medicine organizes the structure in the form of a wheel, or clock. Each of the twelve meridians has a period of peak intensity called a watch. This watch lasts for two hours. Then a similar to a runner in a relay race the meridian hands on the baton of energy to the next one in the sequence. Six are centripetal with the energy running upwards towards the heavens or the head and the other six are centrifugal with the energy running down towards the feet or the earth. Where one meridians ends its journey in the time sequence will be in close proximity to where the next one begins its. So now lets examine this wheel. Notice that the meridians are organized in pairs. Yin pairs with Yin whilst Yang pairs with Yang. Chi circulates throughout the body by means of the meridians or Ching.. The meridians are organized in pairs of which there are twelve. This means, as we have said before that each channel has a two hour period when it reaches it peak activity, and likewise another two hour period when its operating at its lowest ebb. If we start at the 9 to 11 am watch we are in energised Spleen time. If an individual feels denergised at the time of the meridians zenith you have a significant pointer indicating there is a

73

problem. It works both ways, note too those who feel highly energized at these times. This is an indication that the meridian in question is unbalance because it is over-energised. The key to all of this you will remember is one of harmony or balance. The spleen concerns itself with nurturance and sympathy which are Yin qualities. Its element is Earth that relates it to the stomach that comes before. Now notice that when we examine the elements they are paired according to gender. They come in twos and one is Yin and the other Yang. Energy flows along the meridian until it reaches the extreme limit or end point of its flow when it will turn around and flow along the path of the meridian with which it is paired. To understand this lets take the heart. The Heart gets its energy from the Spleen and Pancreas which comes before it. The Spleen is a centripetal meridian through which the energy rises from the outside edge of the big toe all the way up to just below the armpit. The heart then takes the energy and flows it down the inside of the arm to the little finger (Yin). As this flows down towards the earth it is said to be a centrifugal vessel. On reaching the furthest limit of flow, the energy moves into the Small Intestine channel and flows back up the outside of the arm, to the shoulder and neck and finishes up at opening to the ears. This links it to the next meridian in the 24 hour cycle which is the Gallbladder. Yes, it takes the energy 24 hours to flow through the entire system. Take a moment to notice how one meridian flows into another. The pattern is like a relay race. In Chinese Medicine there are five elements. The Spleen is an earth meridian. That means it relates to ground beneath our feet. It is rooted, grounded and stable. It is earthy and sensuous. Think of this element as Gaia or the Earth Mother. These positive qualities go awry when the meridian becomes unbalanced and so the element earth becomes sick, too. The organs associated with earth are the spleen and stomach. These elements have a season, too. In the case of earth it is late summer or early autumn sometimes known as Indian summer. Those golden and often sunny days of late September or early October. The colour of this element is a yellowy brown. When you make sense of this picture, you have some clues to which meridians are out of kilter. The Spleen and Pancreas Vessel has 21 acupuncture points and receives its energy from the Stomach meridian which precedes it.

Earth

The heart time is from 11am until 1 pm. The heart is a Fire organ. Fire relates to the sun, which is the giver of all life. Fire is warmth in all senses of the word. It denotes warmth of body and emotions. Unbalanced fire creates fevers at one extreme and cold at the other. Someone with a very

74

red or fiery complexion can very often have a heart condition, probably relating to high blood pressure. High blood pressure can be caused either by a kidney malfunction or by circulatory problems, which are under the control of those meridians associated with this element. Yes, these elements have colours to help us identify when things are not going right. Fire of course is red. The Fire season is not unnaturally summer. There are nine Heart acupuncture points. You will notice that unlike the other elements Fire is represented twice, meaning there are four meridians that are governed by fire, which we can think of as the life force itself. The heart is the centre of all emotions. We might principally associate it with joy and happiness. This is easy to grasp in the case of the heart, but less so with its Yang companion the small intestine.

The fire meridians are: Heart (Yin) Small Intestine (Yang) Circulation-Sex (Yin) Triple Warmer (Yang)

The small intestine time is from 1pm until 3 pm. It takes up the ChI from the Heart in a Centripetal direction and passes it on to the Bladder which is the longest meridian in the body with 67 acu-points.. The Small Intestine receives the digested food in a liquid mass from the stomach and then breaks it down and assimilates what is required from what has to be discarded. This sifting of what is metaphorically the wheat from the chaff is the basis of discrimination. Once someone has established the ability to discriminate effectively trust issues pose relatively minor problems. The Bladder comes into its own between 3 and 5 pm. It is the Yang companion for the other water element, the Yin Kidney. Water is fluid and this hints that the water meridians are about the flow of life. If someone ceases to go with the flow, it is possible that one of the water dominated meridians has a blockage. Indeed words are very important for example a wishy-washy person will lack inner direction which is the key quality of the bladder meridian. The season associated with water is winter. It pays to ask your clients about the seasons. Its not the favourite season that is going to be the clue but the least favourite. If your person says he or she dislikes winter there is a good chance there lies a problem with either the bladder or the kidneys. The water colour is traditionally black, but blackishblue is more accurate. Those with a water imbalance will frequently feel blue. They might also have a preference for the colour, so someones choice of wardrobe can often be a helpful indicator of what is going on in their lives.. Look too, for blue-black lines around or under the eyes. Sometimes when people are extremely frightened they loose control of the bladder and wet themselves. So this water meridian is associated with the emotion of fear. Fear is cold just like water.

75

The Water meridians are the Bladder and Kidney.

Next comes the Kidney which is at the height of its prowess between 5 & 7pm This centripetal channel possesses 27 points and begins its journey towards the Collar bone from the ball of the foot.. The quality of Kidney is gentle spirit and it is the key to the flow of the energy system. Professor Worsley says the kidneys store the Vital Essence which is another way of describing the Life Force. The kidneys regulate the amount of water in the body, which comprises approximately 75% of the body mass. This means the kidneys have control of more than three quarters of the constituents of the whole, and when we realise this, the importance of these organs begins to dawn. Water flows like a river and removes with it impurities which are then excreted in the urine. Also something like 15 gallons of blood flows through the kidneys per hour. If anything goes wrong with the system, it is easy to see how bloating, swelling and high blood pressure can result. When the Vital Essence begins to back flush or flow in the wrong direction we can have serious problems. The most significant of these is in the realms of Psychological Reversal. Thats why it is so important to encourage the energy to flow in the correct direction and this can easily be achieved by tapping the Collar Bone point or Kidney 27. Although the kidneys like the bladder are very prone to fears and phobias, this is also a place of will power. Fears will cause the energy flow to reverse but once corrected, will power can be harnessed to take the person steadfastly forward in life. Kidney passes the chi onto Circulation-Sex, a Centrifugal Yin Meridian which reaches its peak between 7 and 9pm. This channel has nine acupuncture points. Circulation-Sex is related to the heart and lies in the second set of Fire dominated meridians. This system does not have an organ structure but is frequently associated with the Pericardium, and this acts as a protector of the heart itself. Sometimes an imbalanced Pericardium can be over protective which gives rise to shyness or discomfort in social situations. Conditional or second-chakra love relationships are boosted from here, along with the lubrication of the whole system. This is either determined by blood flow or secretions which make the sexual experience more pleasurable. Yes, Circulation-Sex epitomizes the heat of passion. Perhaps we could think of it as one of those red hearts that appear on Valentines cards. Circulation Sex ends its journey at the end of the middle finger and transfers it to the Triple Warmer which is at its peak between 9 and 11 pm. Its flow is centripetal, with a total of 23 acu-points.. This Yang meridian controls the flight or fight syndrome. It has the quality of connection and when imbalanced as it frequently is can give rise to disconnection. Some

76

believe this controls the thyroid, which manages the bodys metabolism and controls the thermostat. One thing is certain, however, it is heavily influenced by adrenaline which sparks it into action and results in manifestations of anger or fear. Like its sister, Circulation-Sex the key here is fervour. Both can be hot and very fiery because they are dominated by the fire element or quite the opposite. But then the secret to understanding all of this, is to grasp the significance that everything is bi-polar. In other words it stretches from one extreme to another, and to repeat again the secret of wellness is to have balance. However back to the Triple Warmer, you remember we have already looked at ways of determining whether or not this meridian is in overwhelm. It seems that more often than not it is over-active and frequently benefits from sedation. However, Donna Eden warns that too frequent sedation of Triple Warmer can lead to depression. The time is now in that segment between 11 and 1 am, in which is the time when Triple Warmer hands over to the Gall-Bladder. Triple Warmer ends its journey in the temple and Gallbladder begins its trip nearby at the side of the eye. This is a Centrifugal, Yang meridian. It is long having 44 meridian points. The element here is wood. Wood is of course what a tree comprises. A tree grows from the earth and as it grows it gives birth to new life. Man is just like that tree, when all is in harmony he grows and moves through the various cycles that constitute life easily and freely. However, when there is imbalance like the tree he can be uprooted. And be prone to fall. Like a diseased tree the limbs can be gnarled and bent. Naturally this can apply to either body or mind. The colour of wood is green and the season is spring. The Gall-Bladders quality is harmony which can easily be disturbed by a predilection for judgment. Think of this meridian as being green with envy and prone to unbalanced outbursts of self-righteous anger. People with liver and gallbladder disturbances will favour the colour green or have a complete abhorrence for it. Remember in all of this we seek balance and not the extremes. In those who have illnesses permeating the liver and gallbladder meridians there will be a green hue, which precedes the yellow of jaundice or cirrhosis.

The wood meridians are the Liver and Gallbladder.

From 1 am until 3am we are in the realm of Gallbladders sister, the Liver. This picks up from where the Gallbladder leaves off in the foot and brings the energy up centripetally to just below the breast. This vessel has 14 acupuncture points. Its quality is Loving Kindness and Inner Vision. Indeed an imbalanced Liver or Gallbladder can often lead to visual difficulties. The Liver meridian generates the need to make plans, if this trait is taken to unbalanced extremes it changes and manifests as a need to control. When the plans are thwarted there is likelihood of sudden

77

outbursts of frustration, which result in shouting, or the loss of control. Too much alcohol effects the liver and leads to a loss of control, although curiously alcoholics tend to be great controllers of others and events. Both the wood meridians have a tendency when imbalanced towards anger. An unbalanced liver often creates biliousness, and it is no coincidence people say they turn green before they vomit. The livers chief function is to neutralize toxins, and if it cant cope it tends to resort to other methods of ridding itself of poisons. Between 3 and 5am we enter the world of the lung. This is a yin meridian which is under the domination of the element metal. It takes on the flow of chi from Liver and conducts it centrifugally via eleven points to the thumb. The principal quality of Lung is self-worth. Metal gives us a sense of strength and structure. Metal conducts electricity and provides the wires that network that current from place to place. When there is disharmony the structure begins to break down. For instance look for skin problems as a sign of disharmony, as this outer covering is similar to a case containing the structure of the body. On a mental/emotional level imbalance could manifest on the level of communication, which by the nature of the spoken word relies on the breath. Metals colour is white, and imbalances will show up as pallor. The paler the person the greater the imbalance. In truly sick individuals this colour will be that of chalk. The season of the element metal is autumn, which is a time of harvest. If metal is imbalanced a person will be able to conserve his energies through a time of lack. The Chinese acknowledge that breathing brings outside influences into us. In balance we welcome these changes, but when out of balance we resist them. Of course we breathe emotionally as well as physically and phrases like breathless with excitement are common to denote excitement or he knocked the breath out of me relay a sense of shock. The emotion that principally affects the two metal meridians is grief. It will affect the lungs and the bowels, but excessive grief is thought by the Chinese to be particularly injurious to the lungs.

The metal meridians are the Lungs and the Large Intestine

Next, Lung hands on the chi baton to its brother bowel or Fu Meridian, the Large Intestine which comes into its own between 5 and 7am. Here we have a Yang Meridian, flowing in a centripetal direction, comprising twenty points. It is at peak power at the time, traditionally, most people got up in the morning. The Large Intestine has the quality of letting go or forgiveness and we associate it with elimination and excretion. For many one the first actions on arising is to empty the bowels. If this doesnt happen, regularly, the waste products of the body build up and it becomes bloated, constipated, emotionally blocked, spotty with a mucous build up

78

and catarrhal. These are all symptoms of congestion. The Chinese suggest that congestion is the prime cause of all disease. Others from different cultures have supported the theory, notably Dr. Volger in Switzerland. Further emotions associated with metal which have been mentioned before are sadness and grief. We have almost come full circle, as it is now the 7am-9am-time slice that is the home of the Zhang Spleens, Fu brother, Stomach. Yes, the energy moves from Large Intestine to Yang Stomach and flows centrifugally towards the earth. Stomach is the second longest meridian with 45 points. The quality of this is contentment. and the function is to nurture. It takes in food, which is broken down, for use and distribution by the rest of the body. If we cannot take in nourishment either physically or emotionally we will wither away and possibly die. The emotion associated with the Stomach is sympathy. We all know those folk who are cold and unrelenting who find it difficult to express sympathy. This is an indication of imbalance just as it is in those who go around actively looking for sympathy from everyone they meet. These latter poor-me seekers can be very draining. The Governing Vessel like its counterpart the Central Vessel does not figure in the Meridian clock. Both of these sit somewhere in the middle unaffected by time, exercising a controlling influence over all Yang and Yin Meridians respectively. Having got a bigger feel and understanding for these channels, we now need to energise them. This is a really useful exercise that makes a good start to any day, and can be repeated as those energies begin to flag as the day wears on. Ideally we need to start with the meridian which corresponds to the time of day we do the exercise. For instance if we run the meridians at 8am, we would start at stomach meridian. However, first in case we forget it we shall begin with the Governing Meridian. Governing Meridian. Take one hand down to the coccyx. Raise it straight up the back as far as it will go. Bring the other hand over your back so the fingers meet. Then take that second hand over the head and down the centre of the forehead and finish just below the nose. I suggest you then repeat it for a second time. As you are doing this, think or repeat the word strength to yourself.. Central Vessel: Take your dominant hand and rest the index and middle finger on the pubic bone. Slowly raise the hand in a straight line to just below the lower lip. The Central Meridian is very susceptible to hypnosis, so if there is a suggestion you want to take root in the unconscious this would be a good time to make it. You might like to try: I deeply and completely accept and approve of myself just as I am. Zip yourself up three times whilst repeating the suggestion. On the third occasion pretend there is a little lock on that spot located below the lower

79

lip, and just lock it tight when you have finished. That means the suggestion is now safe and secure in your unconscious mind. Emile Cou one of the founding fathers of hypnosis formulated a law that states: Once a suggestion takes root in the unconscious mind, it must discharge itself in motor action. Back to the twelve meridians. Lets begin with the stomach meridian. The starting point is under the eye. Go down and then up in a loop that takes you to the bridge of the nose. Come down between the nose and the eye and drop down to the collar bone keeping just inside of the nipple, descend to the outer pubic bone, now sweep out to the central thigh, down the front of the knee and off the second toe. This is bilateral so repeat on both side and as you do so say contentment out loud a few times. Notice as you run the meridian what you feel. If you do the exercise reasonably slowly you might well come across areas that are warm and others that are comparatively cold. Notice how some meridians will energise you and others will not. Being observant like this will help develop a sense of acuity, so you can make decisions that serve you best. Next we move to the spleen and pancreas. As this is a centripetal meridian we begin on the outside edge of the big toe. Come up the inside of the leg over the hip and outside of the nipple come up to slightly above the arm pit and then drop down six inches or so. As you trace this meridian say to yourself. Ive got more choices than I think. The heart is the next meridian in the cycle. You start just above the armpit and trace down the inner arm and off the little finger. As you sweep your fingers down this line say I learn to love unconditionally! Be sure to repeat the exercise on the other side We follow on with Small Intestine. The starting position is the outside edge of the baby finger. Move up the back of the arm to the shoulder and then up the neck to the lower ear lobe. Then move out to the cheekbone and back at the edge of the ear hole. The affirmation for this one is the single word trust. On now to the bladder, this is a very long meridian. It starts at the corner of the eyebrow, goes up and then over the head and straight down the back to the buttock. Stop there and move your hand onto the shoulder. Come down the back to the outside of the original position and in line with the maximus gluteus muscle. Continue down the back of the thigh and make a small zig zag as you reach the back of the knee and continue down the calf. Skirt around the ankle bone and come off the outside edge of the small toe. As you trace this meridian on both sides call out I know where I am going. I have inner direction. We follow on with the second water meridian, the kidney. Lift the foot and start at the wellspring point which is located in the centre of the ball. Move up over the inside ankle and continue up the inside of the leg to the abdomen and chest ending at the knobbly point on the collar bone. Tap this a few times to insure your energy is flowing correctly. As you trace each side of the meridian say out loud. I have will power.

80

The next one in the clock cycle is Circulation-Sex. Donna Eden summarises the swift motion of tracing this meridian as nip to tip. Start at the nipple, come down the middle of the inside arm and come off at the middle finger. Do this quickly on both sides whilst calling out: I am comfortable in all of my relationships. As most or many people have the Triple Warmer in overwhelm, I would be inclined not to run this meridian. However, like anything running this meridian depends on circumstances. It starts in the ring finger, runs up the middle of the outside arm to the shoulder. Touch your rear shoulder and then proceed up the neck, behind the ear and finish on the outer edge of the eyebrow. Run Triple Warmer only if you are feeling tired and deenergised. It acts as a metabolic jump switch. If in doubt leave it and move on to the next channel which is: GallbladderFrom the side of eye, loop around the edge of the forehead, behind the ear, back to the forehead, down the back of the head and shoulder. Next go in under the armpit, down the side of the chest. Move back towards the kidneys and out over the hip. Continue down the outside leg and come off the fourth toe. This sweeping action is repeated on both sides as you affirm; I have harmony in my life. We continue with the second wood meridian, the Liver. Begin at the inside of the big toe. Come up the front of the foot and then move inside the leg. Continue upwards over the stomach. Move out over the floating ribs to the edge and then in and up to just below the breast. Affirm: My inner vision moves from strength to strength. Next is the first of the metal meridians, the Lung. Begin in the upper chest and then move down the outside of the front of the arm and come off the outside of the thumb. Affirm loudly and clearly whilst doing this: I deeply and completely accept and approve of myself. The second metal meridian is the Large Intestine. Start at the index finger and then move up the back of the hand and arm, over the shoulder, up the neck and over the face to the edge of the mouth and then out to the flange of the nostril. The affirmation is: Its perfectly all right to let go. Well done, thats the dance completed. I hope it feels really good. Some Useful First Aid Tips. These tips come from acupressure and Chinese Medicine. 1) To reduce a fever. A fever is a sign that the body is fighting infection. To reduce it with aspirin or another analgesic interferes with the natural healing properties of the body. Instead: Gently sweep the fingers down from the crease in the inner elbow to a central point two inches above the wrist. Repeat 16 times on each wrist. The lung meridian flows centrifugally, so be sure to flow the energy down towards the wrist and not up to the elbow!

81

2) The end points of the Large Intestine lie approximately one centimeter from the phlanges of the nostrils. To empty the sinuses of congestion, gently rub these points. This is a recommended way of clearing the head in the morning. 3) The end point of the Heart Meridian (H9) is located on the inner corner of the nail of the small finger. In the event of a seizure or heart attack press this point very sharply with the nail of the thumb. This slows down the heart and prevents damage. 4) In acute emergencies place the index finger inside the upper lip (Governing Vessel) and place the thumb opposite and outside. Press hard until the subject shows signs of revival. This has been known to bring people back from near death experiences

What is Alisters Meridian Based Meridian Technique? (AMBT)

An Overview
AMBT is a rapid technique for resolving negative emotions, limiting beliefs and energy toxins. It is not a content-based technique. In fact it is not necessary to discuss the causative events at all. This avoids the possibility of installing any of the negative material and goes a long way to avoiding uncomfortable and unpleasant abreactions. How can it help me? You can learn how to use this technique simply and swiftly and can apply it to all those little or not so little niggles that occur on a daily basis. How does it work? AMBT relies on the power of the unconscious mind, bio-feedback from muscle testing and the clout of Chinese Medicine, which insists that all unwellness is created by disharmony or lack of balance! It works like this. Remember we have just been talking about the Meridian Wheel or Clock. In this we see how ChI circulates around the meridians in two hourly slots. There are twelve meridians, thus it takes twenty-four hours for the energy to complete its cycle. The time segments shown on the meridian wheel are the periods when Chi is at its highest energetic level in each of the twelve channels. Thus: Spleen and Pancreas energy is at its zenith between 9-11 am. Heart : 11am-1pm Small Intestine: 1pm-3pm Bladder: 3pm-5pm Kidney: 5pm-7pm Circulation-Sex: 7pm-9pm Triple Warmer: 9pm-11pm Gallbladder: 11pm- 1am Liver: 1am-3am Lung: 3am-5am Large Intestine: 5am-7am Stomach: 7am-9am

82

So what do you notice? OK Heart is at peak power between 11am & 1pm. That goes almost without saying. However, twelve hours later it is at its lowest ebb. We are in the world of Yin and Yang where everything has its opposite. Notice that 11pm-1am is the peak performance period for the Gall Bladder. Thus when the Gall Bladder is strongest the Heart is weakest., and vice versa. I consider the Gall Bladder to be the reciprocal of the Heart. In other words its energetic polar opposite. Lets examine this a little more closely. Heart is Yin whilst Gallbladder is Yang. Gallbladder is Wood and Heart is fire. Fire burns wood and wood ignites fire. They are opposite ends of a spectrum. Lets continue. Small Intestine is the Fire Yang to Livers Wood Yin. Bladder is the Water Yang for the Lungs Metal Yin. Water rusts Metal, Metal discolours Water. Kidney is the Water Yin to Large Intestines Metal Yang. Circulation-Sex is the Fire Yin to Stomachs Earth Yang. Remember fire can scorch Earth and Earth can extinguish Fire.. Triple Warmer is the Fire Yang and Spleen is the Earth Yin. As I understand it, the key to the Tao is to use Yin to balance Yang. To understand this better it might help to ask a question: What is cancer? It is a Yin disease. It is dark, and cold, interior and negative, inside and deep and it steals energy which makes it hypofunctional. The healing of cancer needs a Yang process. Something that is energetic, hot, active, positive, hyperfunctional and from the outside. Allopathic medicine uses Radiotherapy. Doesnt that fit the Yang bill like a glove?

All unwellness is caused by a lack of balance.

So to achieve wellness we go to the opposite extreme to achieve the balance. In acupuncture there are two things which can be achieved by inserting needles and the same can be said of its earlier forebear acupressure. A needle is inserted to tonify which means energise a weakness, or sedate which clearly represents the opposite. To treat lets say anger, we first of all ascertain from the body mind that it is OK to do that now! The subject is then asked to think of whatever anger means to him/her, whilst touching the end points of the meridians starting with the bladder and working all the way to the small intestine (Karate Chop point). As the subject touches the meridian end points the therapist tests a muscle. All points are included. In kinesiology this is referred to as TL or therapy localising. As anger is a negative emotion it will weaken the meridians. However, as the meridian system comprises a closed loop there will be a meridian that will be over enegised and because of that causes the other meridians to be weak. When we find the strong meridian we have a lot of information about the problem. So lets cut through the waffle. Lets say the Gallbladder tests strong. This tells us it is overenergised. Just glancing at the Meridian Table gives us a lot of additional information about this. For instance it tells us that this is a channel of rage, self-justified anger and control. So the reaction begins to make sense. A Gallbladder in balance would promote harmony. This is lacking in this example. Lets take a peek at the Meridian Clock. This shows the Yin opposite to Yang Gallbladder is Heart. The Heart promotes unconditional love. To promote harmony we need to balance Heart and Gallbladder.

83

Conversely we can look at the dilemma from the theory of five elements. The Gallbladder is associated with the element wood. It is a Fu or bowel in that category. Wood feeds fire and so to regain a balance it is necessary to establish an equilibrium The Fire Master or Prince organ is the heart. To release the blocked energy we need to bring the end points of these two meridians together, gently agitate them by tapping once against the other to stimulate the energy flow and maintain that posture until stability is achieved. However, I am racing ahead of myself. The end points of the Heart meridian ( tips of little fingers) are placed on the Gallbladder points located on the bony structure outside of the eyes. At this point the unconscious mind is asked: to go to the root cause or first event of the problem at the speed of thought . When something comes to mind, and its usually the first thought, the subject is asked to focus on whatever that is, whilst bringing together the end points of the over-energised meridian and its reciprocal, because this action will isolate the segment of the meridian wheel which is adversely affected by the problem. Simply hold that position, until the intensity or SUDS decrease to 0. Voil its as simple as that! In acupuncture terms we have sedated an overenergised meridian and thus released a blockage in the wheel of energy. Having flattened the negative emotion it is then possible to install a positive one of the subjects choice. So instead of anger she can have lets say joy. The question arises why doesnt she have this anyway. Again the meridians provide the clue. This time there will a specific meridian that is de-energised by the positive characteristic. Again it is a simple matter of balancing it. So once more we test all the meridians. The subject places a finger on the end point and repeats the word joy whilst being muscle tested. In this case all the points test strong except for one which will be weak. It is strengthened in just the same way as in the case of the negative emotion. The weak point is tonified by being brought together with its reciprocal, and the system is then checked once more. Lets say the Large Intestine point located by the outside nail of the Index finger tests weak. This indicates the person needs to let go, be a little more spontaneous and less up-tight, and so a balance is attained by bringing the Index Finger to its reciprocal point which is the Kidney meridian located on the Collar Bones Points (K.27). Whilst holding the fingers on these points the subject is asked to think of times when: he might have had joy in his life but didnt. When your man feels the positive state has been fully installed, test the Large Intestine point once more, and now it should be strong. Go back to the beginning, starting with the Bladder point on the Eyebrow and work all the way to the Small Intestine meridian located on the side of the hand. On Tling each point, once again it is necessary the cultivator asks the subject to access the anger state. If anything is weak, correct accordingly. If all points are strong you have finished with that part. But only after checking by using a phrase such as this one whilst muscle testing. This anger is now permanently and completely resolved. If this tests strong the job is done. However, note that you will probably find the negative state of anger weakens several meridians. When the subject is asked to go to the root cause of the anger in each case, it is likely to differ from meridian to meridian. This is because this technique tends to address different aspects of the problem during treatment. Thus ensuring a complete flattening of the SUDs in each case and more importantly it substantially increases the likelihood of the negative state not returning. To make doubly sure the symptoms have disappeared once and for all we need to check the work again. So its time now to move to the charkas. We have to check the whole thing against the chakras to insure that it will stay in place.

84

The Chakras:
Chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning wheel. Actually the Chakras are more exposed at the back but for the sake of convenience we shall be looking at them from the front of the body. There are seven charkas, but Caroline Myss believes there is an eighth, which is devoted to the contracts which we have come to the earthly plane to complete. I would like to acknowledge that I am much indebted to Caroline Myss in her work on relating the Chakras to the Christian Sacrament and the Jewish Kabbala . This is how the chakras are located:

Base = between legs Second= pubic bone Third = Solar plexus Fourth = Heart Fifth = Throat Sixth = Third eye Seventh = Crown of the head. Eighth = Six inches above the head. Strengthen the weak chakra and then test again. CHAKRA SUPPORT SYSTEMS:

Live in the Present Moment. Eighth Chakra: If this were to test weak, it is possible that the subject is not following his/her lifes purpose. If this were to test weak, it would be an excellent idea for the cultivator to sit down and talk with the subject in order to ascertain where things were going wrong. Like so many things in life this mis-direction is very likely to be spiritual in nature. Many of us remain in jobs or situations or cling to relationships that may well have outlived their purpose. We cling to these manifestations of the past, because we do not expect life to support as we strike out into new and unknown realms. Many of us know it is time to move on, but lack the courage to take the plunge. Sadly the harder we hold on the more likely it is we will experience all manner of uncomfortable events taking place around us. These trials are not there to make us miserable, but instead to wake us up and tell us it is time to make those necessary changes and move on. The knocks get harder in order to catch our attention. Often it is necessary to talk to people and point this out and then using some of the techniques listed here in this book, help them make the transition gently and with compassion, so that they can proceed to the next stage of life where exciting new possibilities await all of us if only we have the courage to embrace them!! Testing: It is necessary to test our work against the chakras. To do this the client slowly passes the hand up the body from the root chakra position located between the legs to the eighth which is situated a few inches above the crown of the head, whilst gently applying pressure to the muscle being tested. If the muscle goes weak, it indicates the chakra does not support the intervention and has to be strengthened if the treatment is to be successful in the long term. Balance the chakra by making slow anti-clockwise motions above it to move the toxic energy. The change to a clockwise motion to balance the energy. The client breathes deeply in through the nose and out through the mouth and makes the appropriate Sanskrit sound for reinforcing the centre in question. After a few breaths test the chakra. If it is strong the treatment is complete. Test the remaining chakras. If they are all strong the treatment is finished. If another chakra is weak, follow this scheme, treat accordingly. 2) Crystals can be placed on chakras or worn around the neck. However, preferred method would be to clean crystal using Choo-ko-Rei & Say Hay Kei (Reiki). The place crystal in tumbler of spring or Prills water (bottled will do). Succuss 100 times over Bible. Remove crystal and pour water into dark 30ml bottle. Add 4 drops of required Bach Flower Remedy. Take 3 times per day between meals. 3) Colours: If chakra is weak meditate upon the appropriate colour. Carry colour on the person in the form of a card or swatch of cloth. Handle and look at it as often as possible. It is a useful meditation to look out for the appropriate colour in every day activities i.e. Driving, walking, in the work place etc. Breathworkbreathe the colour into the weak chakra/ back & front.

88

4) Sounds: The Sanskrit letters can be chanted over and over again. To tune the system, take a deep breath and chant each of the letters or sounds in turn. Keep the sound going for as long as the breath lastsLam, Vam, Ram, Yam, Ham, Om and then silence. All vowel sounds are long. In the case of a weak or out of balance chakra, chant the relevant sound as often as you can remember. The musical notes can be listened to by means of tuning forks, or playing the note over and over again on the piano. 5) Hoponopono. This is the Hawaiian Code of Forgiveness. I am deeply grateful to Dr. Tad James for the light he has spread on this through his invaluable Huna Seminars held at regular intervals in the Kona region of the Big Island of Hawaii. Tad tells us that the late Monah Simeone was so impressed with this procedure that she spent the later years of her life travelling the world and teaching this technique to people. At one stage she was asked to demonstrate the process to the United Nations. She campaigned for doing this with everyone you know. Translated, Hoponopono means making it right with the ancestors and relates quite closely to practices that were prominent in Japan, China as well as some other places in the far east. The Hawaiians suggest that the practice needs to be completed before sunset.

How to do it! Take a few deep breaths, close your eyes and allow yourself to float high up into the sky. Reach a place which is comfortable for you, and when you are there take a moment a construct a stage like in a theatre. Next imagine an infinite source of love and healing situated away above your head. Take a moment to get in touch with this healing energy, ensuring you are aligned to its healing powers. Next bring onto your stage anyone with whom you do not feel aligned, is out of rapport or whom you believe does not entirely support what is for your highest good. Let the healing power that has come to from that source high above your head to flow to them. However, do ascertain that it is all right to heal them in this way and that they will accept the healing. A recommended way of posing the question is to ask: Is it OK to heal (name)? Then rub you nail as outlined in a previous chapter. A yes will be a smooth sensation and a no will be ridged, sticky or heavy. If they do not consent to the proposed healing it will be necessary to have an imaginary discussion with the individual to find out why. When the healing between you two is finished, have that discussion anyway. Be sure to forgive them for any perceived wrongs that you feel exist between you. When you are doing this it is an excellent idea to tap both index fingers ( Large Intestine Meridian) with your thumbs. You will remember that is the letting go or forgiveness channel. Remember, this is not a one way trade so you will need to ask them to do the same for you, too. When the forgiveness is complete release the person, see them floating away up from your stage like a balloon in the wind. Cut any cords that bind you, and choose any cutting implement you like. I generally keep a pair of sharp scissors handy for such eventualities, and once those cords are cut watch the person float away out of sight. I suggest you do this with every person in your life with whom you do not feel entirely comfortable. The test is to give each person a SUDs rating, where 10 is extreme discomfort and 0 is completely flat. It will be necessary to reduce the SUDs to 0 in order for this process to be complete. The people do not have to be alive, either. My suggestion would be for everybody to do a

89

complete Hoponopono including everybody you have ever known from your earliest memories to the present moment. Once you have done that it can be truly said you have made it right with your ancestors. Now all you have to do is to use the technique on those who cause discomfort on a day to day basis. I assure you this will change your relationships and your life. Like everything else our relationships change as we do. It is no good to have your parents responding to you as if you were eleven when you are a grown-up aged 30. Whats more you will probably be responding to them as if you were still a child, which is not appropriate for any of you.

CHAPTER FIVE:
USING AMBT

AMBT TEST PROCEDURE: Sometimes because of the brilliant simplicity and effectiveness of all of these meridian based therapies I have been tempted to go for thirty second wonders, and each time I have done it I have regretted my decision. Why? I believe it is perfectly possible to go for quick interventions which can be successful. However, does the general public? If, for instance somebody has had a debilitating phobia of birds that has persisted for several years and you come along and get rid of it in five minutes their belief system is going to be severely challenged, and because of that it is possible for them to recreate the phobia. So, I now resist this temptation and go about my business in a slower and more deliberate manner. The place to start has always been the Case History. It gives you an opportunity to gather as much information as possible and by probing and asking questions you are in fact preparing the soil for the interventions which will come later. These questions need to act as reframes which are just as much part of AMBT as anything else. So, take a Case History in the Normal Manner. Session One always comprises the Case History. In many ways this the most important session we do. It is important because I use it to: Establish rapport with the client. How can anybody confide their deepest, darkest secrets to a complete stranger without establishing a bond of trust and a strand of rapport? In my experience it is unwise to attempt any formal intervention without first building the rapport bridge. Once this has been established you can do pretty well anything by way of intervention! If the bridge hasnt been constructed, and what you are doing challenges a belief structure, you Mr. Therapist, are likely to encounter disbelief, distrust and resistance. Many left brained clients are going to have a problem with EFT, hypnosis, Time Line Therapy, Fast Phobia Cures etc. It, therefore, pays dividends to go slowly. I am not after all advocating a five-year series of psychoanalytic sessions which pay my mortgage and put my kids through boarding school. The purpose of the Case History is for gathering information. It must cut through the fluff of what constitutes the Surface Structure of the problem and allow us to access the Deep Structure, which is where the root problem will lie. We are not here to apply Band Aids and treat symptoms but to dismantle root causes. I compare root causes to the little red bulb that glows when the oil pressure in certain makes of car drops too low. It is perfectly possible to remove the bulb so that it no longer continues to shine its red warning light. However, that is not very wise because you can be quite certain if you continue to drive the car it will grind to a halt with a seized engine in the not too distant future. I always compare this information gathering of The Case
91

History to doing a crossword puzzle. One is constantly on the look -out for clues. The therapist is removed from the problem unlike his client who frequently cannot see the wood for the trees. Therefore, the practitioner is often able to establish patterns and make connections which elude those who are enmeshed in the nitty gritty of the issue itself. It is important to see the wood from the trees. Throughout the Case History the object is to bring the other person out of effect and into cause. One of the questions is: When did you decide to create this problem? I am always encouraged how well people answer this question, because without your dash of rapport there is a possibility your client could stand up and walk out. To elicit likely secondary gain another worthwhile question is: How does this problem serve you? Many people have difficulty with this, but those who can answer it are half way home already. We set our outcome procedures during the Case History. The Outcome Procedure is, perhaps, the most important function of the Case History. What do you want to achieve by coming here? & How will you know when you have achieved it? The first question sets the stage because it elicits why specifically the customer has looked for help in the first place. This is the benchmark. It is the measuring stick by which you can calibrate your work. The second question elicits how another knows that an outcome has in fact been achieved. At the end of the day you need to come back to this place to measure whether or not you have achieved what you initially set out to achieve. I do stress the importance of using NLP skills, in as much as many of the questions serve as reframes, too. The idea is to dig up the ground to make it easier for sowing the seeds of later work. What, youve never studied NLP!!! Oops, then I think you owe it to yourself to change that ASAP! We continue on with the Medical History which includes information about medication and previous treatment particularly, hospitalisation. You dont want to discover that you are treating somebody with Bipolar Disorder who has decided to go off his/her medication because they have come to see you and have not told anyone. Its for situations like these we religiously insure our malpractice insurance is paid up to date. I then set the Homework tasks. I do encourage clients to keep a journal that is definitely for them and not for me to pry into. This is a process and it is the clients process, and tasking which is another word for homework gets them involved.

92

I ask that they keep a record of their dreams, because dreams are what Freud called The Royal Road to the Unconscious,if we can learn to interpret these messages of the night, we can learn to speak unconscious which is a great help & a truly invaluable tool for achieving insights. The best way to record dreams, because they are speedily forgotten, is to keep a pad and pencil beside the bed and write down a record of the dream immediately on awakening. I will then ask for a record of values, having first explained what values are: Values are emotions, anything you cant put in a wheelbarrow. Except money, now you can put money in a wheelbarrow but is it the notes you value or something else? Seeing as we use bank notes to buy things, we have to ask what is really important about the things we buy?
The idea to grasp is we are driven by our emotions and money is one way of buying/accessing the emotions we desire. As advertisers know, people buy items that they want and not necessarily what they need. If this proves difficult to grasp, I go on to talk about motorcars.

What sort of person would buy a Volvo? Somebody who was very safety conscious, a person who felt the family was important, somebody who strove for solid status. What sort of person would buy a Porsche? Somebody who liked speed and excitement. Usually this gets the point across. Values hierarchies tell us a great deal about people. If I had my way everybody who had any intention of starting an intimate relationship with another should sit down and complete a values elicitation with that would-be significant other. Most if not all relationship difficulties come as a result of values conflicts. If I value security and you value freedom and adventure I can go to the bank on the fact our relationship will enter stormy seas once we have prized ourselves away from the initial sexual high. If we both knew about our differences from the outset, then our expectations might be different. Maybe it would not be such a good idea to expect this relationship to last forever, and if we did have that expectation then perhaps we would need to tap on it! Paul and Layne Cutright the founders of The Centre for Enlightened Partnership, are of the opinion that all relationships be they intimate or business have five stages. The first stage is attraction. On first meeting the perceived new lover, there is a huge sexual charge taking powerful precedence over every other consideration. However, it does not last forever, does it? The attraction phase applies to any relationship. When you get that new job and start working for the new company everything is wonderful. But then we move to The second stage is power struggle. Yes, at some phase in the new love relationship we wake up and realize we have to talk to one another. Sometimes we discover to our respective chagrin that neither party has a hoot in common. We also begin to want to get our own way. You see in traditional

93

relationships there has been a lot of controlling in the past. Thats fine as long as you or I are happy to be controlled but when we come to the conclusion that we are not, we inevitably drift into a power struggle. Sadly, most relationships flounder here and do not progress to the third stage, which is: Co-operation. We grow up, overcome the negativity of past experience and decide we can work pleasantly together. In other words, in dinner party parlance, I make the soup and you make the salad. Now that the ego has been laid to one side and we learn to work and play harmoniously together we are in a position to move to the fourth stage which is: Synergy. We now enjoy harmonious energy and understanding so that we can bond and fully understand one another. Synergy is rarer than cooperation, but it is sometimes seen in couples who seem to understand each other so fully that one can complete the others sentences. Now you might ask whats the fifth stage? The fifth stage is breaking up and moving on in a harmonious and loving fashion. Hear this then, all relationships do end!! Some end in death and others break-up. It is necessary to be able to mourn the passing and move on. Relationship break-ups are all too often full of bitter recrimination, which cry out for vengeance. But you know it doesnt need to be this way! Thats what the fifth stage is all about. Another useful function of values is they give a sure fire indication of trauma and painful experience. Listen to the words, are people moving towards something, or are they moving away? After all it is not uncommon for people to move away from pain and towards pleasure. That is unless of course the individual is a sadomasochist, where you will encounter a huge case of Psychological reversal, which will possibly be based on severe trauma, and so the wheel goes round. However, when we discover somebody moving away from something it is very likely that experience was a trauma. Then it is necessary to discover what if anything they are moving towards.
If you have a phobia of dogs, you are going to avoid them like the plague. However, unless you employ a posse of minders who go before you to insure the world is dog free, you are likely to encounter a dog from time to time. This will cause intense fear. But the question remains if you are moving away from dogs what are you moving towards? Away from Meta Programs tend to lead to inconsistent results. This is very often the case with the fear of poverty. Most people have a poverty threshold. When conditions drop into the discomfort zone our subject will do something to alleviate the problem. However, when everything in the garden is hunky-dory, money-making schemes get left to chance. The result is the prosperity graph nose dives down towards the poverty threshold and the process starts all over again. If, we were to look at it as a graph, I think you would find it resembles an outline of the Himalayas.

As a result of all of this, I believe it is vitally important to have a look at the Clients Value system. Consequently I ask the individual to record values around, work, relationships and anything else that seems appropriate. I recommend a ten-minute brain-storming session, and then request the value system be organized into a hierarchy. This hierarchy gives me an invaluable birds eye view of my clients map of the world. Once I enter your map of the world, I begin to perceive like the other person, and then we can truly go to work!

94

Remember: All Perception is Projection. I used to ask for a Biography which could be as long or as short as the individual deemed fit. I now tend to ignore this approach and instead ask people to write about that part of their life that if they were to do it all again they would prefer to miss out. I have found this to be more direct and illuminating.
When that is concluded there will be some obvious symptoms to treat in the first instance. However, before commencing any treatment they are certain key tests that need to be completed. You will find a more detailed overview of these tests on page 64.

Next we need to establish the OHI. OHI stands for Overall Health Index. A rating of 100 % indicates perfect health whilst 0 % is death. Ask whilst exerting pressure on the muscle being tested: As I have mentioned before I tend to favour the Opponens Pollicis Longus. This is conveniently located in the hand. The OHI is more than 50%?To ascertain the correctness of the response it is necessary to ask the question in statement form. The OHI is more than 50%. As he/she repeats the sentence, test the muscle. If it remains strong the answer is yes,!, indicating the OHI is in excess of 50%. Continue, It is more than 60%! and so on until an exact figure is reached. This figure is noted at the outset of treatment, and re-evaluated at the end of each session as a bench mark of progress made. In the early cases where AMBT was used there was a check sheet of negative emotions.

The test procedure, is in effect a form of emotional clearing, works like this:

Each item on the list is muscle tested. Those that involve weakening of the test muscle are marked as items to be treated. Those things which do not weaken the muscle are presumed to be clear. Subsequently each of the negative states that weakened the person are cleared using the AMBT protocol. It is quite mechanical but it is very effective.
In the case of one of the 12 in the Trial Test group, who worked through the negative emotions sheet; this person came out on the initial run with 20 items requiring treatment. By treating for Sympathetic dominance we were able to reduce the list to 5 in one fell swoop. This does show the critical affect that a triple warmer in overwhelm can have on a person.

We are now ready to Treat:

Ask & then test muscle. Clients name (John) Its perfectly all right to resolve this problem completely and permanently today in spite of any benefits I might derive from it. The purpose of this questioning is to elicit compliance. This is an elegant way of overcoming Psychological Reversal and any other obstacle that stands in the way of achieving a successful outcome. If yes proceed. Please, however, put these affirmations in the form of statements. The Unconscious does not react very well to the interrogative approach. Instead frame the question as an affirmative statement. If no go back and elicit problem to be cleared first, because there is something blocking the likelihood of the intervention clearing the problem which diminishes the likelihood of success. Yes. Clients name.(John).It is perfectly all right to treat this problem now. Yes. I give myself permission to completely and permanently release this issue now. No. Go back and elicit objection. Yes continue Instruct the Unconscious Mind to: Go to the first event that when disconnected will release this pattern from its inception, through all its pattern to the now. The client is then asked to indicate when he/she has reached that place by nodding the head. Yes. How old were you when the first event occurred, which by treating we disconnect and resolve this problem from its outset all the way to the present time? Was this between conception and birth? The objective is to ascertain when the causative event occurred. The unconscious knows this but the conscious mind does not. Yes/NO Yes: Treat No: Was it between birth & 10 years old? Yes: Was it between 1 & 2 and so on. Yes treat. No: Was it between 10 & 20 years old? Yes: Was it between 10 & 11? and so on. When the age has been established ask the client to go back to that time and to that event and it will be the first thing that comes to mind. You dont need to tell me what is going on unless you want to.

97

Next it is necessary to find the meridian this will strengthen and thus resolve the problem when it and its opposite are balanced. To do this ask client to touch the meridian end points and saying the problem out aloud. It is important the person gets a handle on the feelings engendered by the issue at each point. John, anger whilst touching the end points of all the meridians one by one. It is useful for the individual to name themselves in the protocol.

Thus it goes: 1) John, anger touch EB point (Bladder 2) 2) John, anger touch SE point (Gall Bladder 2) 3) John, anger touch UE point (Stomach 1) 4) John anger touch UN point (G.V. 27) 5) John, anger touch LL point (C.V. 24) 6) John, anger touch CB point 7) John, anger touch UA point 8) John, anger touch UB point (Kidney 27) (Spleen 17) (Liver 1)

9) John, anger touch Th point with index finger (Lung 11) 10)John, anger touch IF point with thumb (Large Intestine ) 11)John, anger touch MF point with thumb (Circulation sex ) 12) John, anger touch RF point with thumb (Triple Warmer 1) 13) John, anger touch BF point with thumb (Heart 9) 14) John, anger touch KC point with thumb (Small Intestine 3)

The point that gives a strong Muscle Indication is the place to stop. The strong point is over-energised. It is overworking to counteract the problem. It is drawing its increased energy from the segment of meridians that lie between itself and its reciprocal. Balance the over-energised meridian point with its under-energised reciprocal and the problem will be balanced. As this occurs the intensity rating of the negative emotion will decrease to a SUDs of 0. This is how the problem is resolved. Thus: Strong Bladder, Yang, indicates the meridian is over-energised and is drawing energy from its Yin reciprocal, Lung and/or vice versa. To resolve the problem it is necessary to balance the energies between the two meridians. The easiest way to do this is to this in this case is to cross the wrists and bring the outside edges of the two thumbs (Lung points) to rest on each of the EB points (Bladder 2). Keep the points connected for four deep breaths, and to breathe the problem well and truly away. The subject breathes in through the nose and exhales out via the mouth. On the in breath the tongue is placed behind the top teeth and on the out breath behind the lower teeth. At the outset the testee is requested to ask: The problem is now permanently and completely resolved as he/she holds the TL position. After the four breaths the cultivator asks the subject to rest and relax and inquires if there has been any change. The SUDs , if they have reduced to a satisfying 0 the task has been successfully completed, if not the client is asked to return to the original posture whilst, asking: The remaining problem is now permanently and completely resolved. Then take another four breaths and breathe the remaining issue away.

98

Use sensory acuity to determine when a change has taken place. Finally test the muscle whilst touching whichever point was over-energised. If there are other aspects of the problem revolving around anger the meridian point will now test weak. If on the other hand, and this is deceptively if not dangerously subtle, it might test strong, which would indicate the problem is now resolved in all its aspects. It is very easy to become confused here So, you need to test to make sure you are on the right track. If the muscle tests strong, ask the client whilst testing the muscle. Clients name. This anger issue is now 100% resolved. IF Yes continue to the next stage as you have resolved the issue .If the answer is No and the muscle tests strong whilst Tling the over-energised meridian, you have not resolved the issue. You will need to return to the beginning of this particular sequence by getting the client to get in contact with the root cause and proceed to blow it away whilst holding the end points of the two meridians together.. If on the other hand the muscle tests weak, you have flattened that particular aspect, but have not resolved the issue in its entirety .So you will need to go back to the Eyebrow spot and continue testing until you find another strong muscle. You resume the treatment at this point. Experience shows that this method gets rid of the different aspects of the problem. To recap, because this is important. Muscle tests strong = Clients name. This anger issue is now 100% resolved. Muscle continues to test strong =Yes, issue is determined and you are ready to proceed to the next phase of the treatment. Muscle tests weak =Clients name. This anger issue is now 100% resolved. Muscle continues to test weak = no. The negative emotion is resolved in this particular meridian but other aspects of the problem still exist, return to the Eyebrow point and continue testing to find another over-energised meridian.

BUT
Muscle tests strong =Clients name. This anger issue is now 100% resolved. Muscle tests weak = no. The negative emotion has not been reduced to a SUDs of 0 in this meridian. It is necessary to continue working until the 0 is achieved. Back to aspects: We can show that different aspects of the dilemma are treated at diverse meridian points because when the subject is asked to speak about each of the events that they go to as they are treated using the AMBT methodology they will not be the same. In any case you will find that subsequent causative events will be different because the client will select a different age for the negative emotion or limiting belief when it shifts to a different meridian. We assume then, that as the age is different then the event must be, too! The next step is to past pace: Go back to the last time you experienced this negative emotion (anger) and tell me how is it the same or is it different now? Hopefully, you will be told that the event is different and no longer has a charge. If that is the case, future pace. Go out into the future, to some indeterminate time which would in the past have triggered the negative emotion and tell me how is it different now! Hopefully this scenario will give evidence of resolution. However, sometimes it does not and then I resort to the: Drop Through Technique. (Transcript of a session) Go out into the future, to some indeterminate time which would in the past have been negative and you would have experienced that panic. Tell me how it is different now?

99

Oh, I can still feel a bit of it in the pit of my stomach. Can you? I want you to imagine something if thats all right. Id like you to imagine that you are in an aeroplane and you are going to drop out and fall through space. I want you to tell me the first thing you come to. That will be the first thought you have. Its really important you dont censor anything. Is that OK? OK. There is a protracted silence. Just keep falling. Imagine youre falling through space. Drop, drop, drop! Keep dropping and tell me the first thing you come to, whatever it is! More silence.. Theres nothing here. Nothing is always something, so keep fallingdrop, drop, drop! Ive hit the ground. Its hard and cold. That doesnt sound very nice. Drop through the ground whats under that? Im on a beach. The sea is really blue. Can you feel the sand under your toes? Yes, its really nice! Good, that sounds like a good place so enjoy it for a few moments. OK just drop through the sandy beach. Whats under there? Im in a field and theres really green grass. Oh the suns shining and I can see some cows way off in the distance. Good job, that looks like a good place, too. Do you like it there? Yeah, its brilliant. I was brought up on a farm. Now drop through the green grass and whats under there? Oh, its my sixth birthday and Ive got a big pink cake. Thats must have been a delicious cake. Oh it was. Stop youre done. You need to take the client to three positives, no more. Sometimes you alternate between positive and negative but it is necessary to keep going until you have three positives in a row. Now that youve got your three positives you bring the client back up. This is an NLP technique which involves chunking up and down. You have chunked down and so now you need to chunk up. It pays to take careful notes when you use the Drop Through Technique. OK, now lets come back up shall we? Tell me about the farm, how is it different now? Oh, its just like one long summer holiday when I was a child. Those summers were so marvellous I thought theyd never end! Good, youre doing really well! Lets now go back up to the beach. Does it seem different in any way? Its Majorca. We had our first family holiday abroad there! Its where I met my first boyfriend. His name was Peter. OK, what about the hard and cold ground. That wasnt so good was it? Hows that different now? Its solid and makes me feel safe because it supports me.

100

Excellent ! Its time to go back to that future event. You remember the one which would in the past have made you panic. How is it different now? Oh, its quite different. The panic has gone and I feel quite excited like something really good is about to happen! Well done, youve done really well. Thats Drop Through and it usually works like a treat. Remember, however, never exceed the three positives or else you can create a problem. Now we come to the good part. Ask the testee to determine what the positive opposite of the negative emotion which has just been resolved. In the case of our hypothetical case of anger, it is possible your person might select patience for example. John, it is perfectly all right to install patience permanently and completely today. If the response is yes, proceed. Again, the test procedure is to get the testee to touch the end of the meridians (TL) and test the muscle. On this occasion the positive i.e. patience will elicit a strong response from the meridians. Unlike the negative anger that weakened the system except in one place, patience strengthens it. However, there will be one meridian point that will test weak. This will be the locus of the problem. The energy from this meridian is being drawn off by its reciprocal and creating a blockage in the wheel, which prevents the positive quality of patience being present on an ongoing basis. Bring together the end points and hold until whilst the client takes the four breaths whilst dwelling on what he or she imagines the state of patience to be like. Often they will give an indication that the balance has taken place. This will frequently be something like a swallowing motion or facial flush. You need to exercise your powers of observation to notice when the change has happened. If you dont recognise a change, dont worry because you can test after the four in and exhalations have taken place. Once the positive has been correctly installed the previously weak meridian will test strong. This is as you know indicates yes.It is important though never to be complacent. John, patience is now permanently and completely installed. Is the statement tested against the Opponens Pollicis Longusmuscle. Youll remember thats the one in the hand which involves two fingers. You will get a strong muscle test if the answer is yes. The opposite is the case if the response is no, which means you have to return and test from the eyebrow starting point until a TL meridian point again tests weak. The subsequent step after we have an affirmative indication that the positively desired state has been successfully installed is to run negative anger and positive patience against the chakras to insure we have eradicated the negative and successfully installed the positive. Ask the clients to start by placing the hand between the legs and then repeating slowly: Name (Margaret). Anger Whilst slowly drawing the hand up the body. Moving from the pubic bone to the solar plexus, and then flowing upwards whilst still repeating the affirmation to the throat, the third eye and the crown of the head and ending the test routine by taking the hand to approximately six inches above the crown of the head. If the test muscles weakens as the hand passes over any one of the chakra points it indicates the chakra does not support the alteration and must be strengthened. You will find this outlined in detail where we discussed this technique in the previous chapter (p.93). The exercise is then repeated for the positive attribute, in just the same manner. When that has been completed you have finished.

101

What Happens If It Doesnt Work?

The most likely reason for this technique not working is that you didnt fully check for compliance. Do go back and make sure that your individual is ready to let go the negative emotion, limiting belief or energy toxin at this time. It might be a good idea to precede this by having them tap on the upper lip to diffuse any Psychological Reversal that might exist. Get the subject to say once again, and you did remember to do this in the first place didnt you? Whilst they repeat the sentence you test the muscle. It is perfectly all right to release this permanently and completely, now!

If you get a negative response in the form of a weak muscle, you will have to stop and find out why. Once you have discovered the hitch put it right and then go back to the main problem. Sometimes this resistance can be simple dehydration. Have a drink of water and the problems just flows away. Maybe your clients belief structure cannot cope with the prospect of having a problem that has been with them for many years, just simply disappear in a matter of seconds. It does not seem possible. Be guided by this and work at the persons own speed. Negotiate with the unconscious and work out a manageable timetable which is acceptable to the client. Maybe you can get rid of 50% of the problem this week and the remaining 50% next week. Remember this though: A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still. This is another reason for avoiding one minute miracle cures which confound anothers belief structure. Troubles such as this rarely occur if you have taken the time to establish a sound rapport with the client. Another reason for not reaching your objective is that you have missed a meridian in the testing procedure. Yes, sometimes two or more sets of meridians can be involved in the problem. Take nothing for granted, its almost mechanical and when you get used to the muscle testing you can do the work very quickly. Heres another one! Have you checked and strengthen the chakras? If the chakras do not support the meridians there will usually be a problem with past and future pacing. What happens if the negative emotion or limiting belief does not change in the intervention itself? 1. Check that you have the right meridians? In other words double check the muscle test. Remember muscles can get tired and so it pays to use different ones. If you are testing using the left hand Opponens pollicis longus change to the right hand. 2. Drink water. 3. Check for PR. 4. Use Core Transformations. This is an NLP Technique first developed by Steve and Connierae Andreas. I recommend this technique to get you out of really tight spots

102

Core Transformations: Ask the client to go inside and welcome the part that is responsible for the negative emotion or limiting belief (anger). Therapist: Let it be there. Give it some space. When it is there fully and completely just let me know would you, by nodding your head. Client nods. Therapist: Go inside and ask the part; what does it want for me? Client: It wants me to stand up for myself. Therapist: Thank the part for that, would you! Client: Thank you. Therapist: Now ask the part what if you really have standing up for yourself, fully and completely, just the way you want it and you have it now, what does it want for you through having that which is even more important? Client: After a long pause. To be able to ask for what I want. Therapist: Good, so go inside and ask the part what, if you really have the ability to ask for what you want, fully and completely, just the way you want and you have it now, what does the part want for you that is even more important? Client: Love, yes thats it. I want to be able to ask for love. The object here is to chunk up into higher and higher states of abstraction. I think you will agree that love is almost as high as you can go. So now it is necessary to change tack. Therapist: If you have the experience of being able to ask for love just the way you want it. What does the part want for you through having that which is even more important? Client: It wants connection! Therapist: Thank the part for that. Now ask the part if we have all of this and the ability to move on in life, fully and completely and we have this now. What do you want me to experience through that which is even more? Keep going until you reach the core state. That will be a place where the person just wants to remain. There might not be any words at this juncture. Therapist: If you want to have connection, the easiest way to do that is to just step into it now, right NOW as a way of being and have it right NOW. Hows that? Client: Thats really great! Therapist: How does already having this as a way of being make things different? I think you can be rest assured that this will certainly make things very different.

5. At an unconscious level we pick up myriad and varied signals from people. At some level we know what people are thinking, but this will not be at a conscious level. Its very important then to keep a neutral thinking pattern whilst working with other people. I try to keep this phrase running through my head. It is by no means neutral. I find it is completely invaluable and prevents jams from occurring in the first place. You are a perfect child of a loving God and I salute you. Much of your healing success comes from a place of intention. If we intend well, we get a positive outcome. I would like to conclude with The Healers Prayer for A Course in Miracles. It is the place we need to start all beginnings. After all healing is just a new beginning. Healers Prayer: I am here only to be truly helpful. I am here to represent him who sent me. I do not have to worry about what to say Or what to do, Because he who sent me will direct me. I am content to be wherever he wishes Knowing he goes there with me. I will be healed as I let him teach me to heal. A Course In Miracles
