Exercise 1:

DC shunt excited generator

A DC generator has the following magnetisation characteristic at 1200 rpm: Field aimed If(A) Generated emf(V) 1 192 2 312 4 468 6 566 8 626 10 660

1.1 Draw the magnetisation curves: a) at 1200 rpm b) at 1000 rpm Note: Scale: 20 mm = 100V; 10 mm = 1A

1.2 If the generator is shunt excited and driven at 1000 rpm, determine: a) The voltage at which it will build up on open circuit. b) The value of the critical resistance of the shunt field circuit at 1000 rpm. c) The terminal potential difference and the load current for a load resistance of 30 . Note: Field resistance = 60 and armature resistance = 0.5 .

Exercise 2:

Static machine

On the name plate of a three phase transformer, we have the following indications: Apparent power: 160KVA. Primary: 20KV, triangle coupling. Secondary: 220/380V, at full load, star coupling.

2.1 The current at the secondary is 230A. Calculate the nominal active power for a power factor of 0.8. 2.2 In those conditions the maximum efficiency is 0.96. Calculate the copper and the iron losses knowing that those two losses are equal. 2.3 We now use one of the three windings of the transformer. This winding is like a single phase transformer. A primary winding under 20KV A secondary winding supplying a current of 230A, under a voltage of 220V, in an inductive circuit having a power factor of 0.8. In full load, the voltage drop is 5% of the no load voltage in the secondary. Determine: a) The no load voltage b) The turn ration c) The resistance Rs brought to the secondary knowing that the total copper losses of the three phase transformer are equal to 2523W. d) The reactance Xs brought to the secondary if the voltage drop at the secondary for a winding is 11.6V

Exercise 3:

Three phase induction motor

A 3 phase 6 poles, 400V -50Hz induction motor has a rotor frequency of 3 Hz. It draws a line current of 27.1 A at the power factor of 0.8 lagging. The stator loss amounts to 1.2 kW of which 60% is the copper loss. Determine: 3.1 The percentage slip and the actual speed. 3.2 The motor input. 3.3 The rotor copper loss. 3.4 The mechanical power developed in the armature. 3.5 If the friction and windage loss equals 800W, find the motor horse power and efficiency. Take 1hp = 746 W 3.6 Calculate the resistance of each stator coil if the coils are delta connected. What would have been the value of those resistances if they were star connected? 3.7 Determine: a) The gross torque, b) The shaft torque, c) The loss torque, d) The rotor efficiency,
