composed than before. What had in the past seemed like highcharged one-liners, in the byplay between the heroine and her son, seems much more like natural conversation now, although it is still hysterically fumy. What had once seemed like excessive stylistics-the zooms and fast pans-have become part of the standard language of film, at least so far as Scorsese is concerned. The movie's subject matter--a widow must learn to cope on her own--has been done many times, but rarely has it been so free of sentimentality. The title character, played with maruelous resourcefulness by Ellen BurstyO is never made to look unintelligenf even when events go against her. In the wake ol Gangs of New York, a film which once again is finding Martin Scorsese at the top of his game, it is even more timely to look back on this gem fron his early career The beautiful, brmd new 35mm print is courtesey o{ Warner Brothers Repertory

Since then, I have gone out of my way to acquaint myself with this comedv duo oddity from Italy. Known in their native Italy as ......, Terrence Hill md Bud Spencer were apparently, at their pealg the most famous actors in the world... except for America. Mr. Billion nd Superfuzz, both early Showtime staples, were feeble attempts to lamch their nmes in the United States, both flops, md eventually their stars faded. Bud Spencer and Terrence Hill

They Call lv4e Trinity follows a comon Spaghetti plotline: a pair of drifters who help to defend a family of famers from unscrupulous ranchers. What tum this into a classic, however, is the undeniable chemistry of the lead pair and the between dtem. They CaIl Me Trinity, alio, is very self-aware, iuming many of the then-standard Spaghetti conventions upside dom for conedic relief, What results is one of the all-time-great popcom flicks and one of the most popular spaghetti westerns ever made. I'm smiling now just thinking of the chance to watch it again. We hope you will join us! He had never seen the {ilm and noone else in the theater had either. He had heard some good things about it though. Well this is the perfect "put it on at 4am and keep every living soul awake" film. This film is a classic. Is she a werewolf or not? Who cares! This blonde psycho strips to nothing and withes about ripping neck out of men, stabbing women with scissors, killing men with car crunching machines, sets a rapist on fire, pushes one over a gorge, all while completely naked. Hong Kong's Special Administrative Region generally regards vacations to Southeast Asia as being as safe as teething on a loaded handgun. Non-Hong Kong countries are usually portrayed as backwards, illiterate, violent places full of barely-clothed natives who want nothing more than to steal your money, give you a disease, and slap a blood curse on you, in about that order. (1968, d. Carol Reed, 153 min, G, free admission) Adapted from Dickeru' classic novel, it's one of the most dramaticaliy involving and artistically impressive musicals of the 1960s, directed by Carol Reed with a delightful enihusiasn that would surely have impressed Dickens himself. Mark Lester plays the waifish orphan Oliver Twist, who is befriended by the pickpocketing Artful Dodger (Jack Wild) and recruited into the gang of boy thieves led by Fagin (played to perfection by Ron Moody). The villainous Bill Sikes (Oliver Reed) casts his long shadow over Oliver and his friends, but the yomg orphm is still able to find loving care in the most desperate of circumstances. Full of memorable melodies and splendid lyrics, Pauline -Kael to call it "a superb demonstration of intelligent craftsmarship," md to further observe that "it's as if the movie set out to be a tribute to Dickem md his melodramatic art as well as to tell the story of Oliver Twisi." -Jeff Shamon

student/ senior / AFS) The glory ol Vnlley of the Dolls-the flashy, trashy'67 inside-showbiz epic based on the Jackie Susann novel-is that no one involved seemed in on the joke; they took all the eyelash-batting, pill-popping histrionics seriously. Three years later, Russ Meyer's Beyond the Valley of the Dolls added a layer of perspective to the big-haired theatdcs. Though Meyer reportedly spent much time on the set discussing "motivations" with his cast the raunchmeister was clearly leading them on; he knew he was serving up a giant camp tease, the latest in his titand-wit epics like Monrlo Topless and. Faster, Pussycat! Kill! KilI! The tug between the nudge-nudge of the dialogue and the largeeyed enthusiasm of the delivery makes Beyond a real pil1, one that was rudely dismissed by critics as garbage. But it's fabulous, teddy bear-a psychedelic wow that serves up the free love, plunging necklines, androgynous boys, and lusty lezzies of the era with a narcotized abandon. With a script by future Pulitzer winner Roger Ebert-who knew?-the would-be cautionary tale has a nade-up-as-it-goes-along quality, probably because it was made up as it went along. Not a sequel to Valley, the Meyer flick retains the three-girls-on-the-rise-and-fall motif, adding rock musig humor, and some black people. The result is a timecapsule oddity-Laugh-ln meets Looe, American Style, but darker-that spoofs, celebrates, and derides the swinging culture all at once, blithely traveling from quick-cut party scenes to soap-opera organ-playing and decapitations. -Village Voice

that merely recycled former glories, Airplane! was the key that unlocked ihem from the shackles of big budget boredom. The
relentless stream of gags, many at the expense of glossy Hollywood dramas, were unflinching in exposing contrived plot devices to maximum comedic efiect. The greatest victims of this film were the Airport frlms. Their key (ormula was to extract lavish melodrama from incredible moments of peril. Every character had a sad story, and there was always a tug-of-love that would be played both on the ground and upon a stricken airliner In Airplane, our lovelorn couple is stewardess Julie Hagerty, and cowardly loser Robert Hays. Fate forces their relationship onto a plane that's about to fly into conedy mayhem, once it's departed the anarchic airport it's parked in. The witing and directing team o{ Jim Abrahams, David Zucke4 and Jerry Zucker stock it {ull of every obvious clichd and amoyance, only to rip them all apart with outrageous sight gags and a knowing script thal's furious with silly jokes and clever wordplay. There are moments of the movie that fall flat, but before you can even register them, there's another gag on the way. It's now a {ami}iar formula, bft Airplane still retains an edge because the audience is credited with intelligence. Moments of mayhem and chaos are played out with dumbfounding deadpan delivery, often treading a fine line between high drama and ludicrous humor. " - BBC Movie Reviews

Kung Fu movies were (md are) an honored tradition in Hong

Kong and nobody did them better than the Shaw Brothers studio md particularly director Chang Cheh, He made dozens o{ them and occupies a position analogous to John Ford's in American westerns. His sure touch and feel for the period imbued the films with a kind of mythical storybook grandeur and the kinetic action provided by fight choreographer Lau Kar Leung was second to none. Later these films would be affectionately parodied by the Iikes of the Yuen Brothers, Jackie Chan and Samo Hung but it's interesting and inshuctive (not to mention hugely entertaining) to look back at the original old-school source material, and there is no better start than the classic Fiae Masters of Death. -Lars Chang Cheh passed away in 2002, tonight we raise a glass in his honorl

In this one, elderly Jason Robard's mind takes over the body of Corey Feldman in a bizarre bicycle crash/new age seance mishap, vaguely reminiscent of the similarly dated "your chocolate is in my peanut butter" Reeces ad. Granted, it's a disorganized mess of a plot, and Corey never really convinced ne that he was an old man in a young man's body, but these are trivial concerns. What you Bet on the plus side is Corey/Corey power at the dynamic duo's peal some really decent acting on all fronts (at lhe Goonies event last summer, Corey explained that hands-down Dream A Little Dream was his favorite film and his personal best performance. Also, the film was made in 1988/89, when Corey Feldman was gradually morphing into Michael Jacksory while Michael was simultaneously morphing into an alien. Corey even does a spot-on, and somewhat frightening, lip-sych routine, replete with moonrvalk. You aren't truly in tune rvith the 80's until vou confide a secret love of Dreatn ALittle Drenm. -Ttm

Levinson makes handsome and crisp work of this Steven Spielberg productiory without a trace of the treacle that often found its way into other Spielbergian projects at the time. (1986, d. Nelson Shin, 84 min, PG, $5) During the 1980s, one cartoon series ruled the airwaves... The Transt'armers. This paragon of

consumerism was created with a dual purpose-to entertain and to galvanize children to buy the toys. Somewhere along the 1ine, the show became a cult favorite, so in 1986 they fashioned an epic tale of good versus evil specifically for the big screen. The result looked vaguely like an mimated remake of Star Wnrs The Autobots must save their home planet from an evil entity known as Unicron (voiced by Orson Welles). At the same time, they must defend themselves from an all-out attack from the Decepticons. Along the way, lives are losf battles are fought, and a new Autobot leader is born as another dies. The story and action never stop in a thrilling ride that often makes you forget that you're waiching an '80s cartoon with inferior graphics. The violence will also come as a mild shock to those who haven't seen this film for a while-definiteiy a movie for the 8 and over audience. For those who grew up on this series, this is a movie that must be watched. Unlike many cartoon serials before and after, The Transformers relied on solid stories and interesting characters, a manifesto the film itself upholds with gxsto and grace while also being morally responsible. Don't mderestimate this movie; there is definitely more to it than meets the eye. -Jeremy Storey

(1986, d. Iohr Woq 93 min, & $6.50; $4.50 student/senior/AFS) This visceral Southeast Asim battle drama is the film John Woo completed jusi before fus comercial breakthrough with A BilterToryltrou in 1987.

(1974 d,Raphael Nussbaum): Sexy Candace Rialson (Chatterbax, Hallyuood Bouleuard) as a modern-day (well 1970's era) Justine. The three-part story has her hvolved in a kidnapping, a lesbian love affair,

movies, and a rich trove of archival materials. But surreal and

dreamlike as they often feel, Rosenblatt's movies also have hard-hitting psychological and historical underpimingJ' [Film Forum, NYC].

This ic is the film in which the direcror tried out the operdlic. 'lo-mo approach to action that he perfected in his later pictures, so it's mustseeviewing for Woo-philes. The setup is polished off in a quick prologue, as a squad of Chhese commandos is dispatched to smash a heroin ring in Thailand. The movie is pretty much nonstop action from that pointon. -David Chute
