CHAKRAS IN RELIGION AND MYTHOLOGY

Chakras Stimulation through Vowels

By : Prem Singh Year : 2011

Disclaimer
The book was previously named as The Hidden Powers in Humans . Since this clashed with another book of same name, it has been changed to the current title Chakras in Religion and Mythology . All the contents in the book are for the information and discussion purpose only. The author does not have any responsibility for any medical, physical, metal and emotional complications arising from the practice of the mantras of the book. Some mantras like Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra are used for healing purposes in religious practices as per Bharatiya (Indian) tradition. The mantra given in the book, are there in culture, for thousands of years. They are part and parcel of person who follow Bharatiya religious practices. All the right, commercial, re-production are reserved by the author of the book.

Note
This is the tenth revision of the book. Latest revision July 26, 2011. (10th revision) The various discrepancies and subsequent corrected editions are due to the reason that the author have related Chakra with vowels. The traditional relation of chakra with seed words was not satisfactory for the author. The majority of theory in the book is represented from a new view point. So some part of theory which was not fully satisfactory and deemed unnecessary was removed. In the previous edition, A new vowel ( ) was related with the manipura (solar) chakra, So the previous vowel assigned to manipura(solar) ( ) has now been assigned to Anahata (heart) chakra and () is now assigned to Vishuddha (throat) chakra. Therefore the previous editions somewhat becomes redundant and the addition of ( ) solves a major side-effect of mantras which was migraine. Also in the previous edition the vowel (o) was assigned simultaneously to Vishuddha (throat) as well as Ajna (third eye) chakra. This has been rectified and the vowel () has now been assigned to Vishuddha (throat) chakra ,which was previously assigned to Anahata (heart) chakra.

The Need For The Book

The mantras on which this book and the other books written are thousands of years old and are part of Bharatiya history from its dawn. There are many books available in the market, written by well followed god-men/ god-women and well educated religious scholars. But these books lack in a sound reason for the effects of mantras on human body. Most of them starts from different point of view and the reasons given lack authenticity and conviction. This book relates the chakras with vowels, and the role of chakras in ancient history. Furthermore, the author of this book also believe that the ancient history or religion of majority of the world's civilizations, particularly the Bharatiya sub-continent contained explicit pointers to the medicinal physical, emotional and mental effects of the chakra on the humans. The whole narrative of the ancient Bharata History contains same structure and substance as the history of other civilizations, only the narratives are changed. Example :The story of deluge as in Sanatan Dharama (Hinduism), takes place as the Matsya avatar of God Vishnu. The same story is repeated in Christianity in the form of Noah's ark . Examples can be given of ancient history of different civilizations, where deluge legend occurs. This book is different from traditional point of view from the point that traditional view employs beeja mantra ( Lam, Vam, Ram, Yam, Ham and OM) for the stimulation of chakras but the book details the relationship of vowels with Chakras. Some people had have related the vowels to chakras but unfortunately in the wrong order i.e. the vowel relating to crown chakra is associated (erroneously) with root chakra and vice-versa. The vowel notations are in Devanagari(Hindi), English and International Phonetic alphabet. These are merely a tool to represent them. The real thing is the pronunciation of these vowels, which can be listened from the Wikipedia links page. Also I am not aware of the vowel notation system used in English, so the readers are requested to look at Wikipedia page for the correct pronunciation of the vowels.

Acknowledgment
This book has been influenced by the ideas given in Late Mr. Manly P. Hall 's work The occult anatomy of man. Also, the great website Wikipedia was also a lot of help.

About the Author

I am a student and in process of completing my graduation. I admit that the field of religion is too big for a mind like me, to understand and evaluate completely and properly. I at the best can reason and present the idea from another view point. I was totally dis-satisfied at the reason presented by other well known authors on the subject of Chakras. The root words attached with chakras in other books were not satisfactory for me. So this book is my attempt as I feel that the book can be used as an agent of change for the uplifting of humanity and society.

Some Things about Chakras :

1. It takes deep meditation to activate the chakras. While deep meditation do help in activation of chakras, It is not the sole per-requisite. The chakras can be stimulated in normal consciousness. 2. It takes a long time to activate the chakras. Initial activation of chakras requires time, which can range from few days to few week. But once activated, an individual can stimulate, regulate the chakras in a matter of minutes or hours.

Vowels Introduction and Notation

The characters ", , , , , , " represent vowels in Devanagari (Hindi). Their corresponding characters in English are e,a, , , , o, u and in International Phonetic Alphabet are i, e, , , , o, u

(e)- The close front unrounded vowel, or high front unrounded vowel, is a type of vowel sound, used in many spoken languages. The symbol in the International Phonetic Alphabet that represents this sound is i. In English orthography this letter is more commonly associated with /a / (as in bite) or // (as in bit) and /i/ is represented with e, ea, ee, and even ei.

(a) - The close-mid front unrounded vowel, or high-mid front unrounded vowel, is a type of vowel sound, used in some spoken languages. The symbol in the International Phonetic Alphabet that represents this sound is e. In English, Many speakers have a diphthong of the type [e ] instead.

( )- The open-mid front unrounded vowel, or low-mid front unrounded vowel, is a type of vowel sound, used in some spoken languages. The symbol in the International Phonetic Alphabet that represents this sound is Latin epsilon .

Chapter I Chakras And Mantras

Chakras In Human Body

Ancient Bharatiya religions point to the existence of Energy centers in human body. Chakras (Wheel) as these are commonly referred to as. Their are different set of exercise to stimulate or activate these Chakras. These exercises may include meditation, chanting of mantras, yoga and others. In my opinion, the chakra could represent the collection of nerves. There are total seven (7) Chakras in the body . A description of each Chakra is given below :1. Root chakra (Mooladhara) 2. Sacral Chakra (Swadishthana) 3. Stomach Chakra (Manipura Chakra) 4. Heart Chakra (Anahata Chakra) 5. Throat Chakra ( Vishuddha Chakra) 6. Third Eye (Ajna Chakra) 7. Sahasrara Chakra (Crown Chakra) : : : : : : : Known as the base chakra. Located at the pubic bone. Based at Solar Plexus. Located at the heart area. Located at the throat region. Pineal gland. Located at the top of the Head.

See the image - 1 below for the location of chakras in the human body.

14

Chakras And Colors

The seven chakras are related to seven basic colors (VIBGYOR) as :1. Root chakra ( Mooladhara) 2. Sacral Chakra (Swadishthana) 3. Solar Plexus (Manipura) 4. Heart Chakra (Anahata) 5. Throat chakra (Vishuddhi) 6. Third Eye (Ajna) 7. Crown Chakra (Sahasrara) : : : : : : : Red color Orange color Yellow color Green color Blue color Indigo color Violet color

See the image -1 for the relation of chakras with colors. Three distinctive pattern emerges from the color relation of the chakras :1. Red, Orange and Yellow are strong colors. See Image -2 2. Green color is neutral. See Image -3 3. Blue, Indigo and Violet are soft colors. See Image -4

Relation Of Chakras With Glands/Plexus

Chakras could be interpreted as the collection of major nerves in the body. This is a hypothesis, as I am no Medical Expert. The relation between the chakras and the various glands/plexus is given below :1. Root chakra (Mooladhara): This chakra is at the base of spine. 2. Sacral chakra (Swadishthana) : The Swadishthana chakra is related to the Sacral Plexus. 3. Stomach Chakra ( Manipura ) : This chakra is related with Solar Plexus. 4. Heart chakra (Anahata) : This chakra is related with the heart and surrounding chest region. 5. Throat Chakra (Vishuddha) : This chakra can be related with the thyroid gland. 6. Third Eye chakra (Ajna ) : This chakra is related with the pineal gland. 7. Crown chakra ( Sahasrara) : This chakra is related with brain .

Chakras and Vowels

The seven chakras can be assigned into three categories on the basis of their polarity :1. Bottom 2. Middle 3. Top Strong, Hot , Hard, Male, Yang. Neutral. Weak, Cold, Soft, Female, Yin.

The seven chakras relate to the vowels as explained below: The seven vowels are (e), (a), (), ( ), (), (o), (u). These vowels represent the positions of jaw while speaking the vowels. e.g. : While speaking ( ), the jaw is half open But while speaking () the jaw is fully open. The vowels ' (e), (a), () ' corresponds to bottom category as these vowels have strong and restless sound.

Strong
( e), ( a), ( ) Image 7 : Strong Vowels

The vowel ' ( ) ' corresponds to middle category as it has neutral sound (neither strong nor soft).

Neutral

24

Vowels And Mantras

The mantras consists of the vowel sounds : Physical Emotional mental : : : (e), (a), () ( ) (), (o) and (u)

The vowel ( ) is important as this radiates energy in body. Too much of it leads to numbness. Also the vowels (e), (a) and () are necessary. An ideal mantra will contain (e), (a), () and ( ) . It will also contain () and to a less extent o () and u () .

(), (o) and (u) are necessary for mental up being, but too much emphasis on them will leads numbness in body. When chanting a mantra, if the body becomes cold or numb then this means that the vowels (e), (a), () are insufficient. So their quantity needs increasing.

25 Om mantra ( )- AUM mantra ( ): Om mantra is pronounced as (), (u) and ( ).So this mainly relates to crown, throat and heart chakra. Frequency of Vowels: (e) = 0 (a) () ( ) () (o) (u) = = = = = = 0 0 1 1 0 1

How To Practice Or Recite The Mantras

1. The chakra should never be stimulated individually. Their should be a fine balance between the physical, emotional and mental chakras. 2. The Mantras have to be recited as we are reading the line that means normal reading. The real emphasis is on the frequency of a vowel in mantra and the repetition of the mantra. 3. These Mantras can be recited vocally or sub-vocally, in meditation or in full activeness. 4. Some people advertise miracles after the chanting of Mantras. The only miraculous and remarkable thing we as humans possess is our mind and the intellect to analyze the circumstances. Remember reality is only the perception of situation and the way we interpret the situation, the way we are going to react to it. 5. If your body start feeling tired and cold, then change the mantra as it is lacking in (e), (a), ( ) . 6. Some mantras can have a side-effect of migraine. Probable cure insufficiency of () .

Chapter 2 Trinity in Human Body

33

The Two Halves of Brain

Image 14: The two halves of brain The brain is the center of the nervous system in all vertebrate and most invertebrate animals. A longitudinal fissure separates the human brain into two distinct cerebral hemispheres, connected by the corpus callosum. The sides resemble each other and each hemisphere's structure is generally mirrored by the other side. Yet despite the strong similarities, the functions of each cortical hemisphere are different. The right hemisphere controls the left side of the body while the left hemisphere controls the right side of the body. Broad generalizations are often made in popular psychology about certain functions (eg. logic, creativity) being lateralised, that is, located in the right or left side of the brain. These ideas need to be treated carefully because the popular lateralizations are often distributed across both sides.

Left versus right : Linear reasoning and language functions such as grammar and vocabulary often are lateralized to the left hemisphere of brain. In contrast, prosodic language functions, such as intonation and accentuation, often are lateralized to the right hemisphere of brain. The processing of visual and audiological stimuli, spatial manipulation, facial perception, and artistic ability seems to be the functions of right hemisphere.

34 There is some evidence that the right hemisphere is more involved in processing novel solutions, while the right hemisphere is more involved when routine or well-rehearsed processing is called for./

Left Hemisphere functions Numerical computation (exact calculation, numerical comparision, estimation) left hemisphere only: direct fact retrieval Language : grammar/vocabulary, literal

Right Hemisphere Functions Numerical computation (approximate calculationm numerical comparision, estimation) Language : intonation/accentuation, prosody, pragmatic, contextual

Nadi (Yoga)
Nadis are the channels through which , in which traditional Bharatiya medicine and spiritual science, the energies of subtle bodies are said to flow. Ida, Pingala and Sushumna: These Three nadis are of utmost importance :1. Ida (Lunar): Ida is of the left side of body, of a pale color and negative polarity. It is associated with feminine attributes and Yin element. It corresponds to upper three chakras ( Vishuddha , Ajna and Sahasrara) and colors Violet, indigo and blue.

2. Pingala (Solar): Pingala is of the right side, of Bright color and positive polarity. It is associated with masculine attributes and Yang element. It corresponds to bottom three chakras and color red, orange and yellow.

3. Sushumna nadi Sushumna nadi is in the central , of balanced color(neither too dull nor too bright) and no polarity. It does not have any particular female or male inclinations. It corresponds to the green color.

Yin and Yang

In Chinese philosophy, the concept of yin and yang is used to describe how polar or seemingly contrary forces are interconnected and interdependent in natural world and how they give rise to each other in turn. Opposites thus only exist in relation to each other. Many natural dualities Female and male, cold and light are thought as manifestations of yin and yang.

Yin : Yin corresponds to female , cold aspect of the nature. Yin affects the upper three chakras ( Vishuddha, Ajna and Sahasrara Chakra). The yin colors are Violet, Indigo and Blue (VIB). Yang : Yang corresponds to male, hot aspect of nature. Yang affects the bottom three chakras ( Mooladhara, Swadishthana and Manipura Chakras). The yang colors are Yellow, Orange and Red (YOR). Neutral : Neutral region of the body is region connecting these two extremities. Anahata chakra corresponds to it. The color corresponding to neutral region is Green .

38 Yang Male Right Side of Body Physical Chakras include Mooladhara (Root), Swadishthana (Sacral) and Manipura (Solar) Chakra. Yin Female Left Side of Body Mental Function Chakras include :Vishuddha (Throat), Ajna (Third Eye) and Crown (Sahasrara) chakra.

39

Ancient Bharatiya History

Bharatiya mythology has three key components :1. Devtas (Gods) 2. Manav (humans) 3. Asuras ( evil ) Devtas ( demigods) : Devtas are the immortal beings, who works for the benefit of humanity and nature. They possess super natural powers. Some Devtas represent the forces of nature and some represent moral values. They reside in Svargalok (Heaven). Manav (humans): Humans do not possess any particular special powers. They live on prithvi (earth). This is also known as mrityulok. Asuras Daityas : Asuras and daityas are considered sinful and materialistic. They live in daitya lok. They are in constant struggle with the Devtas for the control of universe.

40

Image 17 :Devtas, Manav and Asuras.

41

Devas, Manav And Asuras Relation With Human Consciousness

Devas (gods), Manav (humans) and Asuras are the representation of consciousness in human beings. Devtas (Gods): Those persons who are benevolent are considered Devtas. They are non-attached and spiritual in nature. The super-powers attributed to them in mythology are an attempt to describe the influence of nature over humans. These being spiritual are free of normal human emotions and only think for the uplifting of world. That is why they are called immortals because they are free from any normal human worries and their thoughts transcend through centuries. Manav (humans) : Humans in mythology are the persons which shows emotion faculty. They live in mrityulok means they die through normal human worries and problems. Asuras ( devil) : Asuras live in daitya lok and they attempt to capture the heavens by defeating the Devtas. This means that the physical desires of body like materialism, lust, which constantly tries to overload the consciousness of an individual.

42

Image 18 : Devlok ( heaven), Mrityulok ( Death World) and Daityalok ( Hell)

43

Asuras And Devas In Terms Of Chakras

In Bharatiya mythology, one come across Asuras(Evil), Devas (Good) and humans. Asuras are depicted as non-follower of dharma (religion) and cruel, oppressor to the common humans. Devas are depicted as follower of dharma (religion) and kind to the humans. They live in heaven which is above the earth. Humans dwell on Earth and can be good or bad.

Asuras : Asuras signify a person's focus/stimulation of consciousness and energy from Mooladhara chakra to Manipura chakra I.e. the lower chakras. A person having dominant or sole consciousness at these chakras will have the mentality of asura(evil). As these chakras only represent physical dimension of body excluding mental and emotional. An individual with these chakras will only cater to his physical needs. The Mooladhara represents the sexual nature of a human.

Human beings : Human beings dwell on earth and can be good or bad according to their wish. Human are the persons whose Anahata chakra is stimulated and conscious. The Anahata chakra is responsible for emotional development in persons. Emotions are regarded as first indicators of human nature.

Devas : Devas signify the human beings whose Vishuddha, Ajna and Sahasrara chakras are stimulated collectively or singularly, means any one of three. These chakras also known as the upper chakras are responsible for the mental development in an individual. An individual having these chakras stimulated will attain non-attachment and selflessness.

44

Image 19 : Devtas, Manav and Asuras in terms of chakras.

45

Trinity In BharatiyaMythology
There are seven chakras in human body as per as mythology. There are 3 regions in human body for which these seven chakras are divided. These three region in mythology are interpreted as Hell, Earth and Heaven. In mythology the three regions are also Asuras-Rakshas (devil), Humans and Devtas (Gods). These three regions also crop up in other regions as Trinity in Christianity as Father, Son and the Holy ghost, in Buddhism and in majority of religions as well. You just have to study their mythology in light of the underlying concept. The three regions manifest as Yin and Yang in Chinese philosophy ( they leave the middle neutral region out) .

The seven chakras can be distributed in three regions as below :1. The Bottom region : Chakras include Mooladhara (Root), Swadishthana(Sacral) and Manipura (Solar Plexus). 2. The Middle region : Anahata Chakra ( Heart ). 3. The Upper region : Vishuddha (Throat), Ajna ( Third Eye) and Sahasrara (Crown) Chakra. The Bottom Region (Physical Region): The chakras in these regions are responsible for a human's necessary survival. This region is also interpreted as Hell too because the chakras in this region only corresponds to a person's physical actions. So the person with these vibrations suffers from Hell viz jealousy, lust and other vices. The person's sole consciousness only caters to his body's physical demands. And again this region is termed as asura-rakshas region, because the person with consciousness on this region suffers from vices and lacks emotional and mental sight and understanding. This region is male, hot and strong in nature and the colors associated with this regions are red for Mooladhara(root), orange for swadishthana(Sacral) and yellow for manipura(Solar Plexus) chakra.

46 This region also emphasizes attachment, lust and other vice.

The Middle Region ( The Emotional Region ) : This region is responsible for a person's emotional understanding and first stage for the ascension of consciousness. This region is neutral in nature. The color associated with it is Green . This chakra is primarily connected to humans, Earth. So the person having the consciousness on this chakra will have the mentality of humans i.e. neither too good nor too bad in character, and capable of distinguishing between good and evil.

The Upper Region ( The Mental Region ) : The upper region consists of chakras including vishuddha (throat), ajna ( third eye ) and Sahasrara (Crown chakra ) . This region is responsible for mental development of a person. This region is associated with Devtas and heaven. A person having these three chakras stimulated will be free from negative thoughts and attachment. He will be detached from materialism. He will be only attached to spirituality. This region is also related to creativity and visualization. The mantras like Omkar are recited to ascend the consciousness to this level. The color associated with this regions are Violet( sahasrara), Indigo ( Ajna) and Blue (Vishuddha). This region is female, Yin, cold and soft in nature.

47

Top Region : Heaven, Mental Functions, Non-Attachment, Devtas, Gods and Angels.

Middle Region : Earth, Emotional Function, Humans. Bottom Region : Hell, Physical Function, Asuras, Daityas, Necessary for Physical Fitness.

48

God Shiva Goddess Shakti Duality

Image 22 : God Shiva-Shakti The above picture shows the Shiva-Shakti duality. In My opinion, the above image is another reference to the male female duality in the body. As already stated above, the right side of body is considered male, physical, strong, dark. Whereas left side of the body is considered female, mental, weak, light.

49

Adam And Eve

In Christianity, Jewish and Islamic religion, one came across the legend of Adam and Eve, the first man and woman created by the god. The story is that Adam and Eve were not told to eat from a tree but serpent coaxes Eve to eat the fruit from it and soon Adam follow and then god threw them out of heaven to earth.

This story can be explained in following terms : The forbidden fruit is that of sexuality or transformation in body and mind due to puberty. Since the girls/Eve achieve the puberty earlier than boys i.e. eat the forbidden fruit and boys/Adam later. The Serpent or Satan is attributed to sexual tendencies in humans both male and female. The heaven corresponds to the upper region or mental region and the human psyche in his childhood remains at that place but due to onset of sexual transformation, psyche is concentrated to lower regions or chakras.

50

Sound Weapons In Mythology

In Ancient Bharatiya mythological wars, the Devtas and Asuras fought through the weapons based on sound. They would chant the mantra sub-vocally before firing the arrows. In My opinion, these are references to the physical and mental effects of mantras. The physical effects are attributed as the Asuras and the mental effects as the Devtas. This means that Asuras are the characteristics of overloading of consciousness by physical desires viz are lust, anger, etc., and Devtas are the characteristics of existence in consciousness of virtues like are spirituality, kindness and non-attachment . The wars also have a moral teachings but the above can also be interpreted. These wars also point out to specific areas in the region of the country in which the myth exists.
