after Khursheed gave the statement asking for critical examination of Sachar, Zafar Mahmood along with few other community leaders drafted a letter asking for his resignation for over-ruled the pivotal recommendations of the JPC on Waqfs without giving any reasons thereof while presenting the Waqf Bill in Parliament. Khursheed on the other hand says that most of the recommendations which havent been incorporated in the Bill were not because they were found not feasible today. He further asks, Why not JPC on Harshad Mehta, is being implemented? Why not JPC on Air India is being implemented? This is ghettoization. What happens across the board doesnt concern us. What concerns us is the JPC on Wakf and what concerns us is that unless you accept the complete JPC on Wakf we will say you are antiMuslims, says Khursheed. Hitting out at the section of the community which criticizes him for being anti-Muslim Khursheed says, So what I am saying is that there is an agenda for ghettoization which gets upset whenever I speak that there should not be ghettoization. What is ghettoization? Its ghettoization of mind, says Khursheed saying that Integration with equality is EOC and separation with nondiscrimination is minorities commission. Why hasnt a single voice raised in my support of the Equal Opportunity Commission (EOC) which I have been raising since it was recommended by the Sachar? Why not these guys who have opened a campaign against me, appreciate even a single thing which is being done by this ministry, asks Khursheed. Hinting at the political agenda behind attacks on his from this group, Khursheed says, we just want to attack our Muslim Minister because once he goes there is a space for us. Khursheed says that he is against nothing but ghettoization and the agenda of ghettoization which a section of the Muslim leaders apparently have. There are people who dont want integration and if we don seek integration, equality will come under question mark, adds Khursheed. Talking about one Mr. Lekhi who approached court against Sachar, Khursheed says that, People question what we are doing for Muslims because of the articulation that Sachar is for Muslims. What we are saying is that Sachar is for citizens of India who are Muslims, concludes the Minister.

Ansar Burney became a human rights activist during the martial law age of General Zia ul Haq . He made it big riding on his various campaigns . His primary focus was on prisoners mostly fishermen who unwittingly crossed the maritime border who languished in jails in India and Pakistan . Internally , he fought the Zia regime and tried to help people who went missing in Pakistan . Burney also took up unpopular issues like investigating the wars against India in an open manner so that the people of Pakistan can learn the real reasons behind them. Burney became a recognizable name in India with his offer to solve the case of Sarabjit Singh , who was sentenced to death for espionage in Pakistan , a few years ago . His efforts to rescue the crew of the MV Suez have once again brought him forefront of the civil society level interactions between India and Pakistan . He told THE WEEK that he wanted to travel to India to highlight the plight of Indian and Pakistani sailors in the high seas . Burney is a face of liberal values in Pakistan . It is estimated that only 28-200 women in the entire country actually wear burqas or niqabs. Brems also questioned the laws constitutionality and maintained that it was badly drafted. It is a very problematic law also from a purely legalistic viewpoint, she said. It does not only apply to Islamic face-covering veils, it applies to appearing in the public in such as way that your face is not recognizable with only very few exceptions. So actually if this law is strictly applied we will end up in ridiculous situations where people organizing games for kids, dressing up like clowns will be punished. A Tiny Minority Is Affected Perhaps the most striking aspect of the law is that it affects such a small minority. Some 600,000 of Belgiums 11 million inhabitants are Muslims, but the vast majority of these are from North Africa, where the culture of women covering their faces is rare. Various estimates show that there only are between 28 and 200 women in the entire country that wear the soon-to-be prohibited garment. Despite this, Mustafa Kastit, an imam at the largest mosque in Brussels, believes the law could have negative consequences for the Muslim community in Belgium as a whole: We regret the adoption of this law which risks stigmatizing the Muslim community even more, he said. It also risks strengthening the climate of fear, the climate of Islamophobia that seems to be taking root in more and more Western countries. A Brussels native, Kastit maintains that tolerance has always been a hallmark of Belgian society and politics, and that the country was also a society of compromise. Belgian politics and the mood in Belgium have always been distinguished by a search for an absolute compromise, he said Everyone tries to [ensure their interests] but without risking the community spirit and the security of the citizens. Brems agrees, despite the fact that one Belgian newspaper likened her opposition to the law to defending the Nazis. My theory behind this is that is not a matter of increased Islamophobia. It is about a tension in society with Islam [and] with multiculturalism in general that tries to find a way to manifest itself, she said. We are no longer accepting, luckily, manifest discrimination against moderate or regular Islam. People feel that they should be allowed to be intolerant vis-a-vis a more radical Islam.
Indian Union Muslim League has drawn up a scheme to build 151 houses to be donated for the less privileged sections as a memorial to the partys late leader Panakkad Sayid Muhammadali Shihab Thangal. Beneficiaries of the scheme would be chosen based on their social and economic conditions, irrespective of caste or religion, IUML district president Panakkad Syid Sadiqali Shihab Thangal said here today. The late Thangals life was one dedicated to uplift the poor and needy. So we have worked out this scheme as the most befitting tribute to his memory, IUML leaders said. The houses would be built in 100 village panchyats and seven municipal towns in the district. Each unit is estimated to cost Rs three lakh. Funds for building them would be mobilised by the village and municipal party committees seeking support from people of different walks of life and NRI organisations. The scheme would be inaugurated simultaneously in 15 centres on August 5. The project is expected to be completed within 10 months, party leaders said.

from the Moors were not enough, the Muslims were the prominent traders of Cochin and Calicut, the position the Portuguese eyed. Mohammed Kunjali was both a Muslim and a prominent trader of Cochin. It was thus only a matter of time before the Portuguese came for him. On seeing the unpleasant face of the enemy, he remembered the proverb There are a thousand lands but only one soul and as such hastened to Calicut. The Zamorin, in the meantime, anticipating trouble from the Portuguese built a fort in Ponnani. He was now head-hunting for a capable head of operations, which apart from being a distinguished boatman also needed to show sufficient zeal and motivation not to be lured by the Portuguese promise of gold, wine and women. It now transpired that Mohammed Kunjali, the trader, was also a distinguished boatman. It was thus only a matter of time before he made common cause with the Zamorin and established himself as master of fort Ponnani. It was still sooner that he rose in esteem to become leader of Zamorins naval force, and organized the first naval defense of the Indian coast against imperial forces. The flattered Zamorin gave Kunjali the title derived from the Malayalam word marakkalam meaning and kar, a termination, showing possession, and henceforth Mohammed Kunjali came to be known as the first Kunjali Marakkar. Very soon, the Portuguese succeeded in taking Goa from the Adil Shah sultan of Bijapur, marking this occassion by a wholesale massacre of the Muslims there. The Zamorin made common cause with the Kothari Raja of Kannur, the Sultan of Gujarat and the Sultan of Egypt all threatened by the growing hegemony of Portuguese in the Arabian Sea. Their combined navy crushed the Portuguese at Chaul in 913 AH (1508 CE). The Portuguese however settled scores the next year at Diu, resulting in the withdrawal of Egyptian navy from Indian waters. Calicut was a maritime state
and depended on the seas for its survival. In 918 AH (1513 CE), unable to withstand Portuguese dominance of the seas, the Zamorin sued for peace. The Portuguese secured trade monopolies and constructed forts at Calicut and Chailyam. Kunjali Markkar suddenly found himself on his own. He was now the only resistance against the Portuguese in India. He nevertheless remained on good terms with the Zamorin, who persuaded the Portuguese from attacking Ponnani in 931 AH (1525 CE). However, in 956 AH (1550 CE) the Portuguese did attack, pillage and plunder Ponnani. A fort was built at nearby Chaliyam, on the site of a masjid demolished by them. Mohammed Kunjali passed away and his successor, also donning the mantle of Kunjali Marakkar came to be known as Kunjali II. The Zamorins alliance with Portuguese was an alliance of desperation, and he was on the lookout to get rid of them at the earliest opportunity. The defeat of Vijayanagar, a staunch ally of the Portuguese in 972 AH (1565 CE) by the five Deccan sultanates gave Zamorin the impetus. Hostilities were resumed. The war-paroe was a small craft devised by the Kunjalis, which, manned by just thirty to forty men each could be rowed through lagoons and narrow waters. Several such crafts were deployed at small creeks and inconspicuous estuaries. They would suddenly come out and attack the Portuguese ships at will, inflicting heavy damage and causalities before returning to the safety of shallow waters. This went on for many years until in 1571 CE Kunjali Marakkar attained a famous victory when he crushed the Portuguese at Chaliyam and demolished the Portuguese fort there. In 1573 CE, Kunjali Marakkar passed away and his son donned the mantle of Kunjali III. Though the Portuguese were driven out of Calicut and Chaliyam, they still controlled the Indian seas. The loss of Vijayanagar did nothing to change the power balance as the Zamorin had hoped, and he
still needed free navigation to the ports of Gujarat, Persia and Arabia if he were to survive long. So he went to the Portuguese again, and this time he gave them permission to build a factory at Ponnani. Kunjali Marakkar was not amused. He shifted his base to Kottakal and started hostilities with both the Zamorin and the Portuguese. The expedition came sooner than expected, but Kunjali was waiting. The Zamroins elephants fell into the booby traps on the forests enroute to Kotakkal. The Portuguese war ships never got chance to wage battle. No sooner had they arrived from Goa than they were mercilessly shot down by Kunjalis efficient canoes and slingshots. For the next two years, Kunjali Marakkar ran a virtually independent kingdom, continuing his policy of harassing the Portuguese on the seas and their friends on land. In 1008 AH (1600 CE), the stage was set for the end-game. The Zamorin attacked from land with an army of six thousand and the Portuguese bombarded from the sea. Left with no choice, the Kunjali surrendered to Zamorin on a solemn promise of pardon. The next thing Kunjali knew was being dragged by chains, his body bleeding porously from the beatings. Screams and wails of women and children could be heard in the background, but Kunjali and his band of trusted followers were oblivious it was not as if they could do something about it. Some were already dead and the others were half dead. In Goa, the Portuguese first nurtured Kunjali to full strength. Then the screams could be heard all over Goa as he was dismembered piece by piece, starting from leg upward. Later the body pieces of Kunjali and his followers were mixed and hung around in different places, a lesson for those who dare defy the imperial order.

To stop the spread of Islam in Europe the Norway Gunman Kills the Christians
Anders Behring Breivik, the man accused of the murder of at least 92 Norwegians in a bomb and gun massacre, boasted online about his discussions with the far-right English Defence League and other antiIslamic European organisations. The Norwegian prime minister, Jens Stoltenberg, said Norwegian officials were working with foreign intelligence agencies to see if there was any international involvement in the slaughter. We have running contact with other countries intelligence services, he said. Breivik was arrested on Utya island where he shot and killed at least 85 people, mostly teenagers, at a youth summer camp for supporters of Norways Labour party after bombing Oslos government district just hours before. Dressed as a police officer, he ordered the teenagers to gather round him before opening fire. Survivors described how dozens of people were mown down. The massacre led to the largest death toll ever recorded by a single gunman on the rampage. Ida Knudsen, 16, said she had been in a group of 100 who had initially run from the killer, but that was reduced to about 60 as the gunman pursued them. Eventually she was one of 12 who climbed into a boat and escaped. Another survivor, 15-year-old Mattori Anson, described how he fled into a cabin with 40 other teenagers. They blocked the door and the killer tried to get inside. Then he began shooting at the door. Eventually he gave up and the occupants all survived. With the entire island a crime scene, officers were still combing the shoreline on Saturday and boats were searching the water for more bodies amid fears the toll could rise further. Police were continuing to investigate whether there had been a second gunman on the island. The disclosure of Breiviks claimed links with far-right organisations came as details continued to emerge about the rightwing Christian fundamentalist and Freemason behind Norways worst postwar act of violence. It was revealed that the 32-year-old former member of the countrys conservative Progress party who had become ever more extreme in his hatred of Muslims, leftwingers and the countrys political establishment had ordered six tonnes of fertiliser in May to be used in the bombing. While police continued to interrogate Breivik, who was charged with the mass killings, evidence of his increasingly far-right world-view emerged from an article he had posted on several Scandinavian websites, including Nordisk, a site frequented by neo-Nazis, far-right radicals and Islamophobes since 2009. The Norwegian daily VG quoted one of Breiviks friends, saying that he had become a rightwing extremist in his late 20s and was now a strong opponent of multiculturalism, expressing strong nationalistic views in online debates. Breivik had talked admiringly online about conversations he had had with unnamed English Defence League members and the organisation Stop the Islamification of Europe (SIOE) over the success of provocative street actions leading to violence. I have on some occasions had discussions with SIOE and EDL and recommended them to use certain strategies, he wrote two years ago. The tactics of the EDL are now to lure an overreaction from the Jihad Youth/Extreme-Marxists, something they have succeeded in doing several times already. Contacted by email, the EDL had not answered. The latest disclosures came as the Norwegian prime minister, Jens Stoltenberg, flew by helicopter to a hotel in the town of Sundvollen close to the island of Utya where many survivors were taken and where relatives converged to reunite with loved ones or identify their dead. A whole world is thinking of them, Stoltenberg said, his voice cracking with emotion. He said the twin attack made Friday the deadliest day in Norways peacetime history. This is beyond comprehension. Its a nightmare. Its a nightmare for those who have been killed, for their mothers and fathers, family and friends. Buildings around the capital lowered their flags to half-mast while people streamed to Oslo cathedral to light candles and lay flowers. Outside, mourners began building a makeshift altar from dug-up cobblestones. On Saturday the Queen wrote to Norways King Harald to offer her condolences and express her shock and sadness. Breiviks Facebook page was blocked, but a cached version describes a conservative Christian from Oslo. The profile veers between references to lofty political philosophers and gory popular films, television shows and video games. The account appears to have been set up on 17 July. The site lists no friends or social connections.
