Documenting African American History in Natchitoches Parish

Dawn of Light Masonic Lodge John Gideon Lewis formed the order of the Freemasons in Natchitoches in the 1870s. The Dawn of Light Lodge has served the African American community financially, socially, and academically for decades. Natchez Junior High School The school was founded in 1960 and replaced the original school for African Americans in Natchez. During its short existence it served as a place for students and the community to gather for local events. Once closed, Ben Johnson purchased the building and donated it back to Natchez. The school has now been converted into the Natchez Town Hall.

Morgan Brown Bomber Hotel Formerly, the Stonewall Hotel, the Brown Bomber provided lodging for African Americans. Asbury United Methodist Church The church was founded by and for African Americans in Natchitoches. Former slaves established the church which is still active today.

The Hill in Natchitoches comprises Fifth Street which was an area of great prominence for African Americans during the Civil Rights Period acting as home to the Dawn of Light Masonic Lodge, the Asbury Methodist Church and the Brown Bomber Hotel.

The Village of Natchez began as a series of properties purchased by James Henry Williams and is home to the Main Street area which was a leading African American district during the Civil Rights Era.
The Alcock Store During its heyday, this general store served the African American community in Natchez. Also inside the store was the Natchez Post Office. The store was owned by W. E. Alcock who also served as the postmaster of Natchez.

The Purpose To document the history and culture of African Americans in Natchitoches Parish. The Process 1. Survey individual properties through pictures and interviews 2. Complete the Louisiana Historic Resource Inventory Forms for each individual property within the district 3. Compile the individual National Register of Historic Places form to nominate the entire district

Morning Star Baptist Church Established in 1882, the church still serves the Village of Natchez with programs such as its food and commodities ministry for the less fortunate.
