NAME: PRACTICAL NO.

CLASS ..

DATE:

An investigation into the burning of metals and non-metals in oxygen. AIMS: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. To investigate the burning of metals in oxygen. To investigate the solubility and the acidity of the metal oxides formed. To investigate the burning of non-metals in oxygen. To investigate the acidity of the non-metal oxides that are formed. To analyse and interpret information gained. To write equations for all the reactions.

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Pay careful attention during the pre-prac talk and take notes so that you know what is going on when your teacher demonstrates the various experiments. 2. Decide on and write up an action plan to investigate the burning of metals and non-metals in oxygen. 3. Watch carefully how your teacher prepares a number of gas jars, filled with oxygen for the demonstration. 4. Take careful note of all reactions, colour of flames, intensity of flames, products formed, acidity or alkalinity of oxides formed etc. 5. Present the data in a table. PROCEDURE: 1. Describe the action plan, including the statement of the problem, the apparatus needed, the method that is followed and the findings. 2. Describe the investigation, setting up the apparatus that is required and saying how the demonstrations were done. 3. Use a table to show the results of the demonstration. ASSESSMENT: Consult the rubrics on the next page that will be used to assess your work. Ensure that you have attempted to satisfy all the requirements. The total number of marks allocated to the practical is indicated on the rubric.

Sample results for the burning of metals and non-metals in oxygen: Experiment A: Burning metals in O2
1.
2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Oxygen is prepared by heating a mixture of KClO3 and MnO2 (the catalyst) in a test-tube. The oxygen is collected in gas jars by means of the downward displacement of water in the jars. Metals are heated strongly in deflagrating spoons by means of a bunsen burner and then lowered into the gas jar. Carefully observe the intensity and the colour of the flame when the metals burn/react in oxygen. The metals that can be used are: Li, Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe & Cu Establish what substances (products) are formed. Which products are soluble and which are partially soluble forming suspensions? How do the soluble products affect litmus or other indicators? What can be deduced from this? Write down the equations for each reaction.

Experiment B: Burning non-metals in O2

1. 2.
3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. O2 is prepared in the same way as above. The following non-metals can be burnt in O2: C, S & P Carefully note the intensity and colour of the flames. Establish what substances (products) are formed. Determine the solubility of the non-metal oxides. How do the soluble products affect an indicator? What can be deduced from this observation? Write down the equations for each reaction.
